Will the turkey be alright? Barbara Nice, Kings Heath’s beloved home-grown comedy housewife, is crossing her fingers and toes this year for the turkey to be alright.
“I try a different technique every year”, she says “last year I cooked it upside down by accident and it turned out fine so I’ll be doing that again. “It is nice to be at home on Christmas day isn’t it? Although there is quite a lot of washing up. The Wetherspoons in Kings Heath has a big appeal - but they are already booked up on Christmas Day so I’ll be at home again this year. Instead of the spoons doing my washing up I’ll be washing up my own spoons. “I always say it is good to shop local at Christmas. That way you don’t have far to go when you want to return anything. You don’t even have to get on the number 50 bus let alone try and work out how to post something back to Amazon.” You can see Barbara Nice in her famous Christmas Cracker show at: mac Birmingham 17 December (with special guest Lorraine Bowen, the ‘crumble lady’ from Britain’s Got Talent) & 18 December (with special guests Moseleley)
Bromsgrove Artrix 12 December Manchester Dancehouse 16 December (supported by Lorraine Bowen) Clitheroe Grand 2 December Janice Connoly, Barbara Nice’s creator is performing in the REP Dirty Grotto Season on 15 December (adults only). Janice is also the founder of local group Women and Theatre and together they have two exciting projects in the pipeline; a heritage project around local legend Len Vale Onslow who famously rode his motorcycle for the last time at the age of 102, and Dementia Friendly Kings Heath.
If you have any memory of Len’s motorcycle shop on the Stratford Road or if you have any high street related dementia stories, good, bad or ugly, please get in touch. info@womenandtheatre.co.uk

Ho, ho, ho!
Christmas is around the corner and the neighbourhood certainly won’t let it go unnoticed. For the quietly super-organized who can conjure up meaningful gifts at the drop of a hat, you can stop reading right now, kick back and grab a cup of tea… For everyone else, the ones who let their loved ones excitedly open gift card after gift card, or accidently all buy mum bottles of tequila, this is your window. (I believe) buying locally guarantees sentiment over quantity which is much more in keeping with the spirit of Chrismtas, you’ll find yourself really considering what will put a smile on someone’s face and make them feel truly special... Jam Jar Lights (Bristol Rd) is the absolute definition of a hidden gem, and offers cool alternative lighting ideas mostly involving upcycled jars and repurposed pipes. If you have a hipster in the family, they are sure to adore anything from this place, and the best part is you can make your lights entirely bespoke.
street) have been quietly reaching new levels of fame from their heavenly desserts, and we’re lucky enough to have them on our doorstep. It could be fun to wow the family by presenting a magnificent cake from these guys at the end of Christmas dinner instead of the same old Christmas pudding...!
If filling their minds with adventure, history and drama is what gets them all fired up you can find a fab little collection down at Oxfam Bookshop in Harborne. This place is just the right size, big enough to have something for every taste, and small enough not to get overwhelmed with choices.
You could miss the hustle and bustle of the city this Christmas, you could buy wonderful, meaningful gifts for your loved ones, and you could be giving a gift to your local economy too, helping it to continue providing its cool quirky charms that we know and love.

A home and a way of life The ladies that live at The Gracewell Foster Trust for Independent living on Wake Green Road not only live in a beautiful environment - they also have an abundance of social activities to choose from. The Wardens work tirelessly organising coffee mornings, lunches, afternoon teas, group crossword sessions, bring and buy sales, and Christmas and Easter fairs. A group of the Gracewell ladies spend much of their time knitting items to sell at the fairs to raise money for these wonderful social activities and for local charities. Alma, who is the Warden and lives there too, said: “It is lovely living here. I have made so many friends and I’m busier than I have ever been before!”

Video marketing now an essential business tool
Max Carlish in action directing, and fil ming Amy Watson and Ti m Tolkien for october’s cover story.
Having no interest in getting left behind by the swiftly evolving digital age, My Harborne & Edgabaston magazine is embracing it, in the form of local award-winning filmmaker Max Carlish.
Did you know more people search YouTube rather than Google to find out vital information about businesses before they use them? We discovered this fact and have recently dipped our toes in the world of online video marketing. We have an exciting new corporate video which features the filming, directing and editing talents of Max. It illustrates exactly how our business works and who it works for, with interviews from key local figures and residents who have found our magazines a helpful local resource. Now Max is coming into Swan to expand upon the marketing services we can offer, and help the local business community tap into this amazing opportunity. If you need to modernise your company’s image - better showcasing what you do - and increase the performance of your online engagement and exposure, then this service is perfect for you.
Together with Max we have worked hard to come up with a package that’s affordable, effective and exciting. Watching your company’s personality come to life on the screen has a strong impact. It is invaluble when introducing yourself to new customers, or even reestablishing yourself with old ones. It will pay for itself in the business it will generate.

Bishop commissions 37th Headmaster of The Blue Coat School The Right Reverend David Urquhart, Lord Bishop of Birmingham and President of The Blue Coat School Birmingham, commissioned Mr Noel Neeson as their new Headmaster on Tuesday 20th September 2016. Mr Neeson is the 37th Headmaster of the IAPS Co-educational Preparatory Day School and Nursery which was founded by The Church of England in 1722. Mr Neeson joins Blue Coat with his wife Jules and children Bea, 8 and Jasper, 3. Newly elected School Officers, Hasan (Head boy), Maya (Head Girl), Henry (Deputy Head Boy) and Monique (Deputy Head Girl) along with children from Pre-Prep, presented Mr and Mrs Neeson with four Blue Coat symbols, to serve as a reminder of the School’s foundations: a Bible, to live and speak the truth of God’s ways, an iPad, to inspire a love of learning and to help

us to explore and understand the greatness of God’s world, four House badges to nurture and celebrate our God given gifts and talents and a Chapel collection bag to remind us to serve others and share generously with those in need. A lit candle was presented to Mrs Neeson as a clear reminder of the love, care and support she will undoubtedly give to the Blue Coat family.
Good luck to Roger and Maureen Higgs! After 58 years in practice, 50 of those spent in Harborne, Roger Higgs, Chiropodist and Podiatrist has decided that it’s finally time to retire at the end of November – just a couple of months before his 80th Birthday! Roger opened his practice on Lordswood Road in 1967, when the building was renovated in 1990 the surgery was moved to The Courtyard at the rear of the building with the entrance off Lonsdale Road. Over the many years, Roger has become a familiar face amongst the Edgbaston and Harborne population, treating the feet of several generations of the same families. Although sad to leave a career he’s been passionate about for so long, he’s now looking forward to retirement, and not having to get up at 5.30 am in order to avoid the rush hour commute from his home in Bromsgrove!
Roger Higgs
Roger’s wife, Maureen, has only recently retired herself from teaching tap dancing at the Clock Tower and Newman House on Harrisons Road, Edgbaston. They are looking forward to spending more time together and with their daughter Rebecca and twin grandsons, Howard & Sebastian. After 50 years devoted to treating Harborne and Edgbaston’s feet, we wish Roger a long, happy retirement! 13

Ruby Turner with My Solihull editor Julia Parsons Photo by Seven Star Photography
Meet a legend of Soul-ihull Nationally renowned for her soul singing and partnership with Jools Holland, Solihull’s Ruby Turner is a joy of a person.
Soul isn’t just a style of singing - it’s the core of being and Ruby’s is eloquently expressed throughout her life philosophy and thoughts. Jools said of her “she has this wonderful vibration that when you see her, you know everything’s going to be all right”. Meet Ruby and you’ll get just what he means. Ruby says that it’s a condition of songwriting observing detail and behaviour. She’d love to seriously study what creates the human condition. But this girl is busy… she works. Nearly all the time. Singing and acting, being on stage - it’s what she does in a full time way.
Typical Ruby, she’s a little perplexed about her MBE for services to music, which she went to Buckingham Palace to receive in November. To her - she’s just doing her job. Ruby Turner is no stranger to Buckingham Palace, having performed at The Queen’s Jubilee concert starring alongside some of the biggest world legends in music. It’s fascinating listening to her animatedly recalling that special time when the night ended with a walk across the Palace Gardens with Tom Hanks, Paul McCartney, Peter Kay and Tom Hanks’ daughter, the Royals having gone to bed many hours earlier.
Before injuring her knee, Ruby enjoyed playing badminton in the little spare time she treasured, and still belongs to a local Solihull club, participating socially with quizzes and curry evenings. She can sometimes be seen with her 76 year-old mum, enjoying Touchwood’s shops.
If you meet Ruby out and about in Shirley and Solihull shopping - or see her perform - she’ll touch your life in the best way possible - with tons of soul.
Ruby is currently touring with The Jools Holland Orchestra. And it’s her continuous travelling that cements Ruby’s decision to live in Shirley. She is here in the middle of England which makes connecting to the rest of the UK easier.
Ruby will appear with Jools Holland and his 20-piece rhythm and blues orchestra on Thursday, 15th December at The Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

Edgbaston Stadium
The times they are a changin’ for our Warwickshire cricket team Andy Peebles broadcaster and journalist takes a look back at this year’s cricket season and a look forward to next year’s.
There will be a change at the helm for Warwickshire next season as Dougie Brown departs. What did he do wrong? Maybe that glorious season of 1994 hung like a spectre over him with memories of being a matter of minutes away from winning the grand slam! The hot gossip is around the return of Ashley Giles, a man who may be tiring of life in a Manchester flat and of managing a painfully inconsistent Lancashire team, who only just survived relegation. With a home in the Midlands, contract negotiations will be key for Ashley Giles, but no one is closer to Edgbaston in spirit. I should have sought the views of Jonathan Trott when we met at Euston Station in September. It was a remarkable encounter involving the tie I was wearing. As I walked towards him, having never met previously, he looked up and said; “Did you go to Bishop’s Stortford College?” It transpired that as a South African
20
schoolboy he had played against my old school and never forgotten the school colours which he said he always liked. On a recent visit to Birmingham’s MAC and without a taxi in sight, I hopped on the number 45 bus back to the station and was able to get a good view of the redesigned Edgbaston ground. What a remarkable piece of architecture! A recent Nobel Prize winner once wrote; “The Times They Are A Changin,” and Bob Dylan’s link with Warwickshire is forever, thanks to Robert George Dylan Willis, one of his greatest fans… Andy Peebles is a well-known broadcaster, journalist, author, interviewer and former BBC Cricket commentator and has been inducted into the Radio Academy’s Hall of Fame

Set Sail With The REP This Festive Season This Christmas, Birmingham Repertory Theatre is getting ready to set young hearts racing with the thrill of an old-fashioned adventure, as they set sail for the magical Treasure Island from 25 November to 7 January. Last year saw record numbers of theatre-goers flocking to The REP for The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, so expectations are high for another festive spectacular at the much-loved city centre theatre. When pirates ransack Grandma Hawkins’ inn, her fearless granddaughter, Jim unearths a treasure map and knows she must follow it to uncover its fortune. Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale of adventure and friendship has been given a breathtaking new adaptation by Bryony Lavery, whose version of A Christmas Carol played to packed houses in 2013.

A party with ‘WOW’ factor If you’re going to take the time, effort and money to throw a party you want it to be something truly special, run smoothly and impress your guests by giving them a fantastic memorable experience.
Sundown events is an innovative young DJ and lighting hire company that has already achieved a repuatition for quality. The company’s main focus is on providing talented and dedicated DJs with a strong background in the entertainment industry coupled with state-ofthe-art equipment. This includes impressive lighting displays, seven foot tall gorgeous LED trees and the powerfully athmospheric dry ice machine, and much more, so you can rest assured that your guests will be wowed. Swan Publishing’s Managing Director Amy Watson said ‘We chose this outstanding local company to provide lights, music and funk to our corporate party last month, their upfront affordable prices and willingness to be flexible on logistical decisions gave us peace of mind from the very start’. Sundown events handled all requests prior to the event and kept in communication to assure the Swan team’s frantic party-planning minds were at ease.

An initially barren room was transformed in a matter of minutes by beautiful pink LED trees, a customized projection saying ‘Happy 10th Anniversary Swan Publishing!’, stunning lit up speakers, and some added twinkle from the modern equivalent of a disco ball. At request, they even brought along some fairy lights to jazz up some of the other decor in the room. Jerome Prosser (Sundown’s director) DJ’d the event and made sure that there were tested microphones for the speeches, he calmly juggled playing the music requests, powerpoint and corporate video throughout the night. Amy was thrilled with the look, feel and professionalism that Sundown Events provided, ‘Everything going right stopped me from being nervous, it all fell into place quite effortlessly in the end and I have Sundown to thank for that.’

Seasons Greetings from Tyndallwoods Solicitors Judy and Martin Dyke and the whole team at Tyndallwoods Solicitors would like to wish you Seasons Greetings and a happy, healthy 2017.
Judy Dyke said: “During the holiday period and with New Year on the horizon this is the perfect time to consider rethinking your affairs and making sure they are all in order. “We would suggest that you take a moment to have a look at your will and check that it is up to date. A lot can happen in a year and many issues will have a bearing on your will. These include, births, deaths, marriages or separations of persons mentioned or those related to persons mentioned in your will.
29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site
“This is also a good time to consider whether you or anyone for whom you care should make a ‘property and financial affairs lasting power of attorney’ in relation to financial matters. “If it is left too late this can cause unnecessary stress and expense. Imagine not being able to access finance because your relative becomes unable to make their own decisions. Rectifying this after the event can take a long time and cost a lot more. “Finally, during the holiday period is the opportune moment to consider whether you or anyone for whom you care should make a ‘health and personal welfare lasting power of attorney’ in relation to medical issues, care needs and support. This can also cause a great deal of stress if left too late.” If you would like any advice with regards to wills or lasting powers of attorney please contact Judy Dyke at Tyndallwoods Solicitors jdyke@tyndallwoods.co.uk / 0121 693 2222.

Before
Two Day Kitchen After DoAyou dream of a new kitchen? Makeover
The kitchen is the heart of every home, from the chaos of getting the children off to school, the grabbed coffee before work, preparing the Sunday roast with family and friends gathered round or maybe a quiet moment to yourself with a cup of tea. Is it any wonder that so many of us spend time dreaming of our perfect kitchen?
A new kitchen is also said to add between 2-5% to the value of your home but with new kitchens costing above £10,000+ for a bespoke solution, you may need to re-mortgage just to afford one. Not to mention living off take-aways for weeks and the dust, noise and disruption of the builders. Fortunately a new and growing trend is to avoid the mess, disruption and huge costs by having a kitchen makeover and it is not hard to understand why. Most kitchens have already maximised the space available and all that is needed is a facelift. Replacement kitchen doors and perhaps a new sink and worktops can transform a kitchen in 1-2 days. Imagine staying away for a day and arriving back to a completely transformed kitchen. The beauty of using a professional company such as Dream Doors is that everything will be properly fitted for you and tidied up afterwards
ow open in your area! ew showroom coming soon.
without a huge upheaval and overnight EST. you have increased the value of your home and saved yourself £1000’s off the cost of a new kitchen, can’t be bad!

If you are looking at a makeover purely to increase the value of your home for sale then pick a neutral colour and use less expensive accessories to bring the look together. The current fashion is for high gloss finish and if you look around any show home at the moment there are reflective surfaces everywhere so steal their ideas and go light, bright and shiny to increase your chances of a quick sale. For ideas and inspiration why not speak to Rob at Dream Doors Birmingham.

Tyndallwoods Tree of Light At Christmas the team at Tyndallwoods invites clients and friends to celebrate the life of a loved one by dedicating a Light on their Tree of Light. The Tree stands in the office garden at 29 Woodbourne Road during the Christmas season. This year all funds raised will go to Edward’s Trust. The Trust supports children and families facing loss and surviving bereavement. Judy Dyke said: “Christmas is a special time for friends and family. It is a time when we often recall memories of those who have died in recent years. “The names of everyone for whom a light is dedicated is recorded in a “Book of Lights” to be kept at the office during the month of December.
“I hope this will be a positive way of giving comfort while helping to generate much needed funds for Edward’s Trust. A minimum of £5.00 will cover the cost of each light and any additional donation will be much appreciated.” If you would like to dedicate a light to a loved one, please contact Judy on 0121 693 2222.

The Birmingham Cook Book A new cook book has been published which celebrates the culinary delights of Birmingham. Here’s a recipe from the book, showcasing the talents of the hugly sucessful Miss Macaroon.
Lightly fold almond meal into shell mixture while gradually adding whipped egg whites, being careful not to over mix and beat out too much air. Place mix in a piping bag fitted with a plain 7mm piping nozzle and pipe perfect circles onto lined baking tray.
olate & white choc Blueberry oons. ar ac m ch Fren
Leave for 20 minutes to form a skin, the duration will depend on what time of year it is due to room temperature and humidity. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 150°C.
Ingredients ls: For the shel 30ml water r ulated suga 110g gran almonds d n ou gr 110g sugar 110g icing ztes hi w g eg 80g ache: For the gan le cream 80ml doub chocolate 115g white d rry compoun be ue bl p ts 1 : te po m For the co ated sugar 25g granul blueberries h es fr 0g 25
Bake macaroons for 11 minutes. Make the ganache by boiling the cream in a small pan, while gently stirring to avoid it catching on the pan. Place white chocolate in a heatproof bowl and pour hot cream onto white chocolate and mix quickly to melt the chocolate. Add compound and mix until incorporated. Cool in fridge until it is of piping consistency. To make compote, put the sugar in a pan and enough water to dissolve it. Heat on high heat until it comes to a rolling boil, then add blueberries. Cook until fully broken down, should take about ten minutes. Cool in fridge.
Method You will need a sugar thermometer to make the macaroon shells. Recipe makes 35. Line heavy baking tray with baking parchment. To make the shells, mix the water and granulated sugar in a pan and set over full heat.
To assemble the macaroons, match two half shells for shape and size, and pipe a 5p-sized amount of white chocolate ganache onto the flat side of one of them. In the middle, pipe some of the blueberry compote. Top with other half shell and leave to set in fridge. Repeat with remaining shells and filling.
Add sugar thermometer to pan once it comes to the boil – will only work with exact measurement of the temperature. While sugar is boiling, mix ground almonds and icing sugar. You can sieve larger pieces out for a less refined finish.
Co
Once sugar gets to 109°C, whip 40g of egg whites on full speed. Once sugar boils to 113°C and egg whites are at stiff peaks, pour sugar onto the egg whites while continuing to mix. Turn speed down while Italian meringue cools to about 40°C.
