Tim Tolkien at Sarehole Mill with his two towers
The Ent is not dead Says Tolkien’s Two Towers’ sculptor Tim Tolkien. Great nephew of JRR Tolkien himself and a renowned public art metal sculptor, Tim is the talent behind the recreation of Tolkien’s two towers that now reside at Sarehole Mill in Moseley. The original two towers that are said to have inspired those in The Lord of The Rings are still as large as life in Edgbaston; Perrots Folley and Edgbaston Waterworks on Waterworks Road. As well as recreating the Two Towers, known in the books as Orthanc and Barad-dur, Tim Tolkien crafted the stunning spitfire sculpture on Spitfire Island near the Jaguar factory (formerly the spitfire factory where 22,000 spitfires were produced during WW2), the impressive centrepiece at The Elizabeth of York pub in Moseley and artwork in over 20 schools across the region. Furthermore, Tim is the sculptor who will design and build Tolkien’s Ent, that has been in the planning for over ten years. Tim said: “Projects like this often take years to come to life, it’s a complicated process of consultation, design, planning permission and in the case of the Ent, securing the funding and deciding on location.
5
“Originally it was planned to be in the village green - a lone tree trying to return to his friends in the forest, but now it is likely to take up residence in Moseley Park much closer to its kin.” The full amount of funding needed has yet to be secured and you can help with a donation or by helping to set up a crowdfunding campaign. Tim Tolkien’s connection to his great-uncle’s work runs deep in his life. He now resides in Cradely Heath in the heart of the Black Country. “I technically live in Mordor - but it’s not what it used to be!” Ironically, Tim feels great affection for the metal-bashing heartland of the industrial revolution which now stands as a shadow of its former self, whilst JRR portrayed it as a great evil that would change the world forever. To find out more about commissioning public art metal sculpture contact Tim Tolkien on 07973 938290 or via timtolkien@icloud.com Moseley Statue Group can be contacted via David Isgrove at davidisgrove@gmail.com

Tim Reid, successful screenwriter and Silhillian But … what does he have in common with Peter Kay?
Tim Reid grew up in Knowle and from 1980 - 1985 went to Solihull School. Like many youngsters, he hadn’t a clue what he wanted to do when he grew up. Tim went on to Manchester University to study marketing and on his second day there, met the girl he was to marry. Once graduated they decided to remain living in Manchester. Tim found employment with an advertising agency, working his way through pretty much every department, learning the ropes. He was naturally creative - an ideas man and eventually found comedy was his style. Tim says even when he attended Dorridge Junior School, he enjoyed making people laugh. He began to write with Mancunian Paul Coleman who shared his love of comedy and writing. Paul had been at school with Peter Kay. In 2010 having set themselves the challenge of writing a sitcom, they agreed their key points were that it needed to be cheap to produce and small scale. Eventually they came up with the concept - car sharing. And John and 7
Kayleigh were created. Kayleigh, affectionately based on a work colleague of the two writers was dead smart, bubbly and vivacious. As a conflicting character - John really just wanted to listen to music. “It’s been said that women speak 30,000 words a day and men, in comparison, just 10,000. By evening, men can become monosyllabic. Perfect comedy material,” Tim says. “Comedy is best when it’s reflecting real life - people will laugh at things they know to be true and when it is reflected back in a new way”. Car Share went on to win many TV Awards for all involved. It was wonderfully successful. Tim has recently won another prestigious award from the British Screenwriters Guild for Best Comedy Writer for Car Share. Tim’s dad owned Polly’s Cards & Gift shop in Solihull High Street. “They sold Snoopy dog toys”, Tim recalls. The Golden Lion was his main hang-out when he should have been attending Sixth Form (now The Beech House Restaurant). “But I got my act together studying, just in time”, he says.

Guess who’s coming to dinner... Halloween takes its etymological roots from All Hallows Evening, which in the past preceded the great feast of All Hallows Day. The name of this traditional Christian festival has been chopped and changed over the years, the Scottish accent putting the final touches on the current Hallow-een, ‘een’ being Scottish for evening. It is believed that the tradition arose from the Celtic harvest festival ‘Samhain’ which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the ‘darker half’ of the year. At Samhain it was thought that the souls of the dead would revisit homes seeking hospitality, and families would set an extra place at the dinner table to accommodate them in the hopes that their generosity to the spirits would appease them and help the families and livestock to survive the winter. People would also disguise themselves as these haunting apparitions and go door-to-door singing in return for food, which has remained virtually untouched as the central way to participate in this spooky festival.

Rediscover the pleasure of entertaining... The table was laid, the bi-fold patio doors were wide open and the sun was just setting as wonderful smells started to waft throughout the open plan kitchen diner. Our chef for the evening (it felt as extravagant as it sounds!) was the superbly talented Myles Matthews who temporarily transformed the atmosphere in our home into utter elegance and sophistication. The guests - my family - were soaking it all in while I was jotting it down, ‘It all feels very French, everyone at home like this with fantastic food’ I hear my grandmother say ‘Yes, it feels great to get all the family here around the table, without the mammoth task of preparing a feast’ my mother chimes back. The first course of homemade artisan bread with maldon sea salt was laid down and we took generous hunks, deliciously soft with crispy exterior, while sipping our wine and chattering contentedly over candlelight. Chef Myles served each course at the table, took away our empty plates and answered all of our questions about the exquisitely balanced flavours and surprising ingredients. He even left the kitchen spick and span, not a dirty plate in sight… we felt like absolute royalty. 15
A slow cooked lamb rump dish (for main course) may sound simple enough but with the buttered spinach, burnt cauliflower puree, buttered fondant puree, and a raisin and lamb sauce it was worlds away from expectations. Our palettes - satisfied by the foregoing parade of savoury wonders - were well prepared for the dark chocolate tart with textures of caramel, which certainly continued to sweeten the deal. ‘It’s like food for the gods my grandmother whispered excitedly between bites. We finished the night with homemade petit fours of flavours such as pistachio, lemon and chocolate, and gave Chef Myles a well deserved round of applause for the five course feast he had impressively whipped up for our party of eight. This night was put together by La Belle Assiette, who offer experiences like this one, with top class chefs and a range of menus to choose from. Visit them at labelleassiette.co.uk to find out more, and book a truly memorable evening of your own. Prices start from just £39/person and include the ingredients, cooking, service and cleaning up. Hosting meals really has never been so simple.

Computer problem? No Problem Our local computer fix it guy it has a few words to say about his world... I love visiting people and fixing their computer problems. I love getting to know how a particular small business works, and implementing a better IT system to let that business really move forward. I see a lot of computers which are a source of frustration for people, rather than being efficient tools to let them do the things they need to do. I’ve trained and worked for large, corporate IT departments, but in 2010 I went back to basics and set up My IT Guy with a very clear, simple focus: to provide a personal, honest, expert service to home users and small businesses. 17
I visit people who work from home, and businesses who can’t have their own IT staff. For regular clients, my remote support solution is a brilliant time-saver, allowing me to get to work immediately. If you have a home computer that is slow, inefficient or simply not working, let me know. If you run a small business and are grappling with inefficient email, file sharing , networks or any other IT issue, get in touch and you’ll be amazed at what can be achieved. Innovative solutions for every bathroom Creating your ideal bathroom could prove to be a challenge, depending on its shape and size and what you hope to achieve but it is something that Roman Bathrooms excels in, as was the case with a recent bathroom refurb. When Margaret contacted other companies wanting her corner shower enlarged as part of a general bathroom refurb, they said it wouldn’t be possible. After discussing the project with Roman Bathrooms, they suggested a re-positioning and a wet area rather than the restrictions of a conventional shower, giving Margaret a solution she was happy to go ahead with. “It worked really well,” says Margaret. “I had a clear idea of what I wanted and Roman Bathrooms tweaked it to allow me to fit everything in. The result is a lovely modern room that I’m extremely pleased with.
“I was also very impressed with the workmanship, and their attitude,” says Margaret. “There was a tight schedule to adhere to and if something needed to be completed at the end of the day, the workmen stayed over until it was done. There was no clock watching and that really impressed me. In fact, I can’t fault the designer, the workmen or the end product.”

Charity Fun Run for Parkinson’s UK A popular charity 5K fun run at the University of Birmingham is celebrating its third year with a fresh course, bigger field, and new fundraising goals. “Bud’s Run” has already raised over £40,000 for Parkinson’s UK, and hopes to smash the £50,000 barrier when it’s held again on Sunday the 9th October 2016.
“Bud’s Run” was the brainchild of much-loved athletics coach Bud Baldaro, the former UK Athletics Marathon Coach who’s been based at the University for over a decade. Bud has encouraged and helped hundreds of distance and middle-distance runners of all standards and ages, in a career spanning over forty years. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2009, Bud is determined to use his love of running to help fund research into this long-term condition. Bud said: “It’s exciting to launch the third Bud’s Run on behalf of Parkinson’s UK, and we hope to have 1000 participants involved this year. Please do your best to support us. 2. Painter’s tape transformation
1.
A great tired old furniture face lift comes in the form of painter’s tape. You lay down the tape carefully and the hard work is done, pick out some great colours and go for a bold geometric pattern like this, or perhaps something much simpler with block colours, whatever you choose it’s sure to be gorgeous.
If you have nice but tatty frames laying around, you can repurpose them as stunning chalk boards with sticky-back chalkboard sheet, or using blackboard paint on the piece of wood that slots into the frame (remove any glass). Painting the frames will help strengthen them and completes your creative signature.
4.
3. Hogwarts’ style Halloween
Coffee table
Repurposing a metal basket as a modern little coffee table couldn’t be easier. First paint the basket, chic black or electric orange, whatever you feel will make the right kind of statement in your home. Ideally the table top needs to be round so see a carpenter to get your wood into shape, and then either rest it on top or fix it in place using wood glue. Voila!
Halloween is an opportunity to enchant as well as to scare. This creative project reflects the much loved world of Harry Potter and brings it to life in your home. Using the papier mache technique cover toilet rolls and place a mini LED light in the top, paint them white and you have the candles. Now for the magic. Secure fishing wire to the candles and hang them from the ceiling, and they appear to float in the air!

Dramatic nights &
theatrical frights
Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s autumn season is crackling with a variety of new plays and iconic classics. One play that encompasses both qualities is the live stage version of the cult masterpiece The Exorcist, which makes its UK debut just in time for Halloween.
This stage adaptation from the original novel by William Peter Blatty, that led to the legendary film which shocked a whole generation, is written by John Pielmeier and unleashed for the very first time in a uniquely theatrical experience from 21 October - 5 November 2016, at The REP. The REP certainly seems to be daring its audiences to try something scary over Halloween, as running simultaneously with The Exorcist is the unnerving immersive experience, Séance. From 18-29 October, a small number of brave souls enter a pitch black shipping container outside

Finding the light within Diwali is the Hindu festival of light, the fireworks, candles, fairy lights and sparklers paraded to enjoy this celebration are meant to symbolize the inner light that this tradition seeks to nurture. Here are some of the rituals practiced during the Diwali festival; b For five days children and adults come together wearing their finest clothing and joyously celebrate.
b Gifts are given, and large feasts of vegetarian dishes and sweets are shared. b Oil lamps called ‘Diyas’ are lit every night during the festival symbolizing inner light and to fight off darkness and ignorance. b Fireworks are lit to symbolize warding off evil. b Families decorate their porches with colourful designs and patterns called rangolis. b Families forgive and forget the misdeeds of their peers in the last year.
b Families light Divos and ask Bhagwan (God / spiritual leader) for inner enlightenment.

Pallet planter
Upcycle ideas: Garden
This upcycle project can look far more classy than its pricey counterpart - ceramic pots. You will need a pallet (free from local building projects or skips), a saw (a circular saw would be best), a hammer, a drill, measuring tape, a pencil, wood screws, sandpaper, and 4 heavy duty casters. It will look a bit ‘rustic’ if you haven’t got much experience in carpentry but it’s not much different from negotiating flat pack furniture assembly, especially since you don’t have to follow any confusing instructions , you make the rules!
2.
This project is so simple, as long as you pick your cushions out first, everything else can be harmonised with them. All it takes is 12 breeze blocks painted a bright happy colour to keep the spirits up when the weather turns dreary, 4 planks of wood sanded and primed to avoid splinters, and a bold print on large cushions to cover the seats, et voila.
Breeze-block bench
4.
3.
Painted glasses
Sprucing up your glasses takes patience and concentration but does not necessarily require you to be Michelangelo. Modern bold geometric patterns look stunning on glassware, and using gold or silver paint will give it a tropical / ethnic feel. Failing the freehand painting, stencils will help you achieve an effortlessly crisp line, and don’t worry we won’t tell a soul. 39
Wrap up warm on a chilly winter afternoon and go on a hunt around the park for a dozen or so pinecones and bring them home for a messy afternoon getting covered in glue and glitter. The end result is impressively classy looking as homemade decorations go, and as a family activity takes minimal intervention to make sure it ends up ‘display worthy’.
