Where

dinosaurs Come To Life!

Jurassic Kingdom: Where Dinosaurs Come to Life, is an extraordinary, new animatronic experience, which will see life-sized DINOSAURS taking over parks across the UK, where visitors will be transported back to a time when they ruled the earth.

Kicking off at Birmingham Botanical Gardens on 20th May - 4th June, it makes the perfect treat for the family, with over 30 true-to-life dinosaur models and installations ready to roar, spit and snarl at those brave enough to get up close and personal. Diplodocus heads will poke 16 metres above the ground, amongst the tree canopy as Triceratops escort their young through the bushes beneath. The ear-piercing screeches of the Pterosaurus will alert visitors to the danger in the skies above and guests must be wary of the spitting defence of the Pachycephalousaurus, in case he lurks around the next corner.

Designed by Weli Creative - the team behind the sell-out Magical Lantern Festival - Jurassic Kingdom will kick off on April 1st in London. Other venues will shortly be announced in cities including Bristol, Manchester, Blackpool, Glasgow, Newcastle, and Leeds.

Jurassic Kingdom tickets (in Birmingham) are now on sale at jurassickingdom.uk

But wherever you are in Jurassic Kingdom, remember you’re never far from the ‘King of the Tyrant Lizards’ and the most famous dinosaur of them all - Tyrannosaurus Rex, standing 18 metres from head to tail. 5

“Happy Easter!”

from around the world While the popular Easter celebration has evolved to become a rabbit-and-egg-shaped chocolate bonanza in many Western countries, it still holds a sentimental place in many Christian (particularly Catholic) hearts near and far.

The story of Easter is at the centre of Christianity and Easter Sunday marks Jesus’ resurrection. So the traditional theme of new life is symbolised in the giving of eggs to most, and within Catholic households it is often a festivity bigger than Christmas! In the Philippines : “Maligayang Pasko ng Pagkabuhay!” 80% of people in the Philippenes are Catholic. Every year they have an eight day festival beginning on Palm Sunday and ending on Easter Sunday which involves processions in Roman costume, blessing of palms and much more. In Italy : “Contento Pasqua!” Easter is still an important time in all Italian regions. Many towns and villages in Italy perform their sacred dramas about the episodes of the Easter story. In Poland : “Wesołych Świąt Wielkanocnych!” Families celebrate with lively street processions and feasts of ham, sausages, babka (a Polish cake), or sweet cakes filled with nuts, fruit and honey.

Procession with hand-m ade palms, Poland

In Costa De Almaria, Spain : “Felices Pascuas!” Here the celebrations are spectacular and include Roman Chariots, horse parades, a friendly rivalry between the blue and white “pasos” and a mass of colour and verve, plus of course hugely indulgent feasts.

Edgbaston Priory Club

The Ball is in Your Court Tennis season will soon be in full swing, and if you need a fresh incentive to get involved, what better than the idea of playing lawn tennis where it was first invented? The game was first played in 1865 on a croquet lawn in an Edgbaston garden. Not only are there still tennis courts near to that very site, but also various opportunities around Edgbaston and Harborne to join a club or simply play for fun.

Edgbaston Priory Club:

This newly-refurbished club offers opportunities to play at the highest level and compete; to have lessons as a beginner or professional, adult or child; or simply to enjoy a friendly game every now and then. There are thirty-two courts in total, eight of which are indoor so you can play whatever the weather!

Edgbaston Archery and Lawn Tennis Society

Located next to the scenic Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston, this club offers everything from social tennis mix-ins to coaching; mini tennis to league games. With membership costing £30 a month for an adult (and less for children, teenagers and students!), courts do not have to be booked and are free to play on. As a member, access to the clubhouse and grounds is also free.

Cannon Hill Park:

If you’re looking for a more relaxed approach to tennis, it’s easy to book a court at the vibrant Cannon Hill Park, free of charge. There are also opportunities for group coaching and league tennis so to book a court or join in with a session, visit birminghamparktennis.co.uk/.

Lordswood Tennis Club:

This smaller club in Harborne, with a friendly, comfortable atmosphere in which to play and socialise, offers yearly family memberships including access to the clubhouse for £75. They also run Kids Camps during the school holidays which are perfect for young tennis enthusiasts.

Local author David Armstrong King’s Heath-based writer David Armstrong’s new crime novel, Black Earth, is published this month.

It’s David’s ninth book. His first, Night’s Black Agents, ‘a tale of crime and punishment that Zola wouldn’t disown’ (Literary Review,) was shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association Best First Crime Novel Award.

As well as crime fiction, David is the author of How Not To Write a Novel, a bittersweet account of the joys and miseries of being a writer, and essential reading for anyone thinking of pursuing such a dream.

The Sunday Times said of A Kind of Acquaintance: ‘British crime writing is on a roll at the moment, and this is about as good as it gets.’

Black Earth is set on the Canary island of Lanzarote. ‘It’s a beautiful, sunny place,’ says David, ‘But the story features some very dark deeds indeed.’

David was born in Great Barr and went to school in Bordesley Green. He then spent many years in Shropshire where, as well as writing, he taught English at a Sixth Form college.

Black Earth is available on Amazon. Signed copies from the author are £9.99 including p&p. Email drja1946@gmail.com to order one.

Get your feet ready for

sandal-season

It’s soon time to bare your feet again, but if this fills you with dread, local chiropodist Tracy Cawley has some advice:

Fungal nails Fungal nails can be treated but people are often unaware they have them. Sometimes starting with white patches on the nail or from a bruise or sports injury, they become thick and difficult to cut. The longer you leave them the longer it takes to clear them up so don’t delay, get them treated today!

Verrucas These can become the bane of your life as they’re so hard to get rid of! They’re very contagious so be careful walking around bare foot,

in communal showers areas, swimming pools and saunas. You can even catch one having a pedicure where a footbath is used. If you have a foot problem that makes sandal-season daunting then Cawley Chiropody can help. They currently have special offers for verruca treatments. Call now on 0121 238 0802. 11

A boutique bathroom with spacious shower It’s all about the fine detail and that’s why Mike chose Roman Bathrooms recently, when he was looking for a new look to the family-bathroom at his home in Harborne. “Initially, I had a recommendation from a friend but just to be sure, I also considered a couple of other people,” Mike says. “However Roman Bathrooms stood out from the rest as they understood my brief and interpreted it perfectly.” “The job wasn’t a complicated one but it was important to get everything right. After discussion with Mike, it was agreed that inclusion of a bath would compromise the look of the room, so a larger space was made for a shower, rather than try and cram both options in. The work took a couple of weeks and now Mike is the very proud owner of a stylish bathroom,

with hotel-style tiles on the walls, a walk-in shower, underfloor heating and a whole host of other stylish features. “It’s been an excellent experience,” he says. “Everything from the design through to the workmanship was top-class.”

Taxing Times

- Inheritance tax explained The first question we get asked when clients come to see us is: “Will I have to pay inheritance tax?”. The good news is that not everyone will pay inheritance tax. It will only be paid if the value of your ‘estate’ at the date of death exceeds the Nil Rate Band (NRB). The current NRB is £325,000 per person.

What does my estate include?

Your estate includes all assets held by you at the date of your death. This includes cash, property and investments, along with your share of jointly held assets. It also includes assets held overseas, such as property. If you are a beneficiary of a trust, the trust assets may also form part of your estate. Your estate will also potentially include assets given away by you during your lifetime. Your executors will need to carry out proper investigations to establish whether gifts were made by you during your lifetime, and to make full disclosure of any such gifts. They will need to report what the gifts were, when you made the gifts and who you made the gifts to. The definition of ‘gifts’ includes cash gifts and gifts of personal possessions along with paying for holidays or school fees. 16

“The Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB) is a new inheritance tax relief which will be phased in between April 2017 and April 2020. The initial RNRB will be £100,000 in addition to the current £325,000 Nil Rate Band (NRB).” Generally speaking, assets gifted over seven years before the date of death no longer form part of your estate. However, many people do not realise that there are exceptions to this rule. If your executors or beneficiaries fail to make full disclosure to HM Revenue and Customs (‘HMRC’) of all issues relevant to your inheritance tax position, HMRC can and will impose penalties.

What is the new main residence nil rate band (RNRB)?

The RNRB is a new inheritance tax relief which will be phased in between April 2017 and April 2020. The initial RNRB will be £100,000 in addition to the current £325,000 NRB. The RNRB will increase by £25,000 each year for

the following three years until the 6 April 2020 when each person will have a potential RNRB allowance of £175,000 available to them in addition to the £325,000 NRB. The RNRB is only available for individuals who are gifting their property or the proceeds of sale from their property to direct descendants and will only be available in full for estates with a net value of less than £2 million. Estate and inheritance tax planning are complicated and emotional areas. We recommend taking specialist advice to ensure that your wishes are carried out on your death.

If you would like expert and practical advice on any of the above, or on any of our other private client services, please contact Rachael Armstrong on 0121 227 3726

A Matter of Life and Death

The community group, BrumYODO, returns for another week of activity, but on an even bigger scale than last year. This year BrumYODO will be partnering with mac at Cannon Hill Park and Birmingham Museum and Arts Gallery to develop a new mini arts and cultural festival. The festival is called “A Matter of Life and Death” - a diverse programme of activities including debates, art exhibitions, shows and workshops. Anyone will be able to go along and ask the kinds of questions we don’t normally get to ask such as: how do we have a good death, what is it? And how do we plan for it? Organisers will also be asking “What Can you Do?” to help family, friends or neighbours, and taking a look at approaches to death and dying across different cultures.

The fact is we need to start demanding good end of life care and death provisions, but if we don’t have these conversations then we aren’t going to know what’s needed until the inevitable happens. Activities are still being finalised but will be promoted over the coming weeks on the website: brumyodo.org.uk and also via the mac at macbirmingham.co.uk You can also follow the group’s activity on zTwitter @Brumyodo with the hashtag #lifedeathbrum 19

“I’m not a delivery slot.

I’m a person”.

When you hire someone to provide a service – a cleaner, a plumber or a mechanic, for example – you want to know that they will do what you want and need them to do. So why wouldn’t you want the same assurances when you’re searching for a carer for yourself or a loved one?

Take Lisa, for instance; Lisa was diagnosed at the age of four with an incurable disease. Now 54, she relies on care agencies and personal assistants to enable her to live her life to the full. But when arranging her first care packages, Lisa wasn’t aware of any systems or services to help her: “I was quite fortunate with the first agency I picked. For me, it’s all about performance and standards.” Lisa now has up to seven different care workers, all with different skills and talents. “It’s like a juggling act all of the time. It’s a case of ‘what do I want to do today? Who shall I have with me to do it?’ So one of them came with me because we were picking up a new wheelchair and she would be the one dealing with my chair on a regular basis. There’s another one who’s good at coming shopping with me”.

For Lisa, it’s important that care agencies understand her as an individual: ‘I’m not a delivery slot. I’m a person’. We launched adam LIFE in Birmingham last November for just that reason: We believe that everyone should be able to easily find and choose the right care for them. ‘With adam LIFE up and running, it’ll be the one stop place to look for care services,’ says Lisa. You tell us about the care you want. We ask our marketplace of approved providers to give you a personalised quote for their services. You compare the quotes and ratings we provide you with. You decide on the best care for you. It’s that simple.

3 great

House plants that are for

indoor air quality

The list of volatile chemicals that can be found inside the home make for some unsettling reading. Benzene is found in some plastics, fabrics, pesticides and cigarette smoke. Formaldehyde can be found in some cosmetics, dish detergent, fabric softner and carpet cleaner. It certainly can benefit the healthiness of your home to bring in professional help, and nobody knows more about cleaning the air than these guys...

Peace Lily • Loved for its beauty and its willingness to grow even in low light • Efficient removal of formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia, toluene & xylene • Low maintainence, water once a week • Toxic for cats and dogs Fun fact: The plant’s name derives from the delicate flowers that soar high above the leaves like white flags of surrender.

Golden Pothos AKA Devil’s Ivy • Slightly more of a needy plant, likes moderate to bright sunlight • Filters out xylene, benzene, formaldehyde, toluene & trichloroethylene • Requires low to moderate watering • Toxic when eaten Fun fact: This plant has a secret that it very rarely shares, it has been known to produce beautiful yellow flowers when growing in the wild.

Spider Plant • Prefers bright light but will grow in semi shade • Battles formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, tolulene & xylene • Needs lots of water in Summer, less in Winter • Will grow lots of baby spider plants that make great gifts

Fun fact: Spider plants are an evergreen native to the African tropics. It is understood that 15 spider plants could purify the air of an entire house.

Kind hearted pupils

show support for charity On Valentine’s Day kind-hearted pupils at Edgbaston High School for Girls joined together to show their support for children born with half a heart.

Girls attended the school day dressed entirely in red in aid of Little Hearts Matter, an Edgbaston-based charity that supports children, young adults and families affected by the diagnosis of single ventricle heart condition.

whose son was born in 2016 with half a heart and underwent surgery just 24 hours after being delivered. The school’s ‘red day’ comes as the family prepare themselves and their son for a second round of surgery.

At break time girls gathered together for a group photograph, Senior School students sold an assortment of home-made Valentine’s themed cakes at a bake sale to bolster funds raised and Prep pupils participated in heartthemed craft activities. The school was delighted to have raised upwards of £1,700.

Rachel Lewis, Fundraising Manager at Little Hearts Matter, said: “Little Hearts Matter is a small but national charity offering support to anyone affected by a single ventricle heart condition, or half a working heart. As a small charity, we rely entirely on our fantastic donors and fundraisers so we’re absolutely delighted that Edgbaston High School for Girls has decided to hold this event in support of us.”

Little Hearts Matter has offered much support to a member of the school’s teaching staff

Birmingham Beats Cancer Saturday 4th February was World Cancer Day, where the nation united in the fight against cancer. Millions of people joined in the #ActOfUnity by donating and wearing unity bands.

Tyndallwoods Solicitors celebrated the occasion at the first ever Birmingham Beats Cancer Dinner. The night was organised by The The Birmingham Business Committee to highlight, celebrate and raise funds for the brilliant work CRUK carries out right here in Birmingham; last year over £8 million was spent on research carried out in the city, being described as ‘some of the UK’s best scientific and clinical research’. With guest speakers and raffle prizes- including a wheelbarrow of booze. The evening generated over £13,000, adding to the £102,000 already raised by the Birmingham Beats Cancer Committee. This incredible total has helped support the cost of research, allowing survival rates to double in the past 40 years and CRUK aim for that to increase to 3 in 4 survivors within the next 20 years.

Judy Dyke, Managing Director of Tyndallwoods said:

“I am proud to be Birmingham’s Ambassador for Cancer Research. Let’s help CRUK Beat Cancer Sooner and continue fundraising and donating for such an important cause.”

Heard it on the grapevine Local magazines are the next best thing to word of mouth - the most effective form of advertising. They can be found in every town and city across the country and are read by local people keen to find out more about their neighbourhood. At Swan Publishing we put our heart and soul into making this magazine interesting and useful for our readers and it also offers an excellent platform to reach a wide audience for local businesses.

1. Effective marketing to be proud of Most people in our neighbourhood are proud and protective about where they live. It feels comforting to be part of a community, and local magazines serve as an important information source. Feedback has enabled us to develop the magazine’s usefulness and we now have a solid readership. We focus on the positive aspects of local life, leaving the negative stories for the newspapers and TV news. 2. Trust - valuable in every way As consumers we spend an increasing amount of time on social media, but i’s a statistic that most people will only scan a website for 15 seconds before moving on. People interact differently with printed magazines. They tend to spend a bit more time reading a local magazine, fully interacting with the content, including the advertisements. 3. Your Ad Will Stand Out There is a myth that print is dead. The fact that you’re reading this shows that’s untrue! Many businesses have migrated their marketing online vying for the visitor’s attention in a sea of other digital ads. Often these are just an irritation and by clicking on a link one never knows if it will result in receiving unsolicited email or something that will infect a computer. It’s a risk. An advertisement in print has no threats - no links to another website. It’s easy to read and relevant details are accessible quickly.

4. A Longer Life While newspapers and digital ads come and go quickly, these magazines have staying power. For instance, a magazine left in a doctor’s office will be read by countless patients for many months, and your ad can be seen by a majority of them. These magazines also serve a dual purpose, providing interesting local information alongside a useful directory of local businesses. 5. Brand recognition When you advertise regularly in a reputable local magazine, people become familiar with your company. This recognition is then reinforced when they see your van livery, or premises, or meet you in person. This not only builds brand recognition, but in time, brand loyalty. 6. Credibility Local magazines are highly valued and respected publications that strengthen a sense of community. Many people use them as their primary way of sourcing local tradespeople and services - alongside asking their friends and family for recommendations of course.

If you or someone you know owns a business and would like some advice on how to get the most out of a marketing budget then call Amy Watson on 0121 689 0432.
