From Ambridge to Albert Square seley ia Mo v

Moseley writer Tim Stimpson has had an amazing twelve months. He’s played a major part in the ground-breaking, headline-grabbing Rob and Helen storyline on the Archers, which led to an Outstanding Contribution award for the soap at this year’s BBC Audio Drama Awards. And now, after fourteen years in Ambridge, he’s turning his hand to another muchloved, but very different British soap, EastEnders.

Tim came to Birmingham University in 1998, where then-Editor of the Archers, Vanessa Whitburn taught a module. Her advice was to “pester someone who can help you”, and Tim took her at her word, pestering her into giving him work experience on the show, then invitations to script meetings then opportunities to write trial scripts. His persistence paid off and in 2003 he was asked to be a part of the Archers writing team, where he’s been ever since. In contrast, Tim’s move to EastEnders was a lot less calculated. In 2016 Sean O’Connor, the then-Editor of the Archers, took over the helm at EastEnders. “There was a short period of time when he was working on both shows,” explains Tim. “I went down to London to talk to him about the Archers and he ended up giving me a tour of Albert Square and asking me if I wanted to have a go at writing an episode. I jumped at the chance.” But despite having to travel up and down to London a lot more now, Tim isn’t tempted to relocate. “We moved to Moseley from Cotteridge four years ago and we love it. My wife has a job here, my parents are in Telford, hers are in Cannock. It’s just a much better quality of life. And London’s easy to get to - although the peak rail fares are a killer.” Tim’s advice to anyone wanting to follow in his writing footsteps is, “Multitask. Write in a variety of media, meet people, get involved, make your own radio drama, put on your own play, learn how to complete an Arts Council application. It’s very exposing, to put yourself out there, but keep doing it and eventually something will happen.”

EastEnders story lines are a closely guarded secret, and Tim’s lips are as tightly sealed as Ian Beale’s wallet, but I did manage to prise a small spoiler out of him: “It wouldn’t be EastEnders without a damn good row, would it?” Written by Alexandra Taylor

Tim’s debut EastEnders episode airs on BBC1 at 7.30pm on Tuesday 4th April. 5

“Happy Easter!”

from around the world While the popular Easter celebration has evolved to become a rabbit-and-egg-shaped chocolate bonanza in many Western countries, it still holds a sentimental place in many Christian (particularly Catholic) hearts near and far.

The story of Easter is at the centre of Christianity and Easter Sunday marks Jesus’ resurrection. So the traditional theme of new life is symbolised in the giving of eggs to most, and within Catholic households it is often a festivity bigger than Christmas! In the Philippines : “Maligayang Pasko ng Pagkabuhay!” 80% of people in the Philippenes are Catholic. Every year they have an eight day festival beginning on Palm Sunday and ending on Easter Sunday which involves processions in Roman costume, blessing of palms and much more. In Italy : “Contento Pasqua!” Easter is still an important time in all Italian regions. Many towns and villages in Italy perform their sacred dramas about the episodes of the Easter story. In Poland : “Wesołych Świąt Wielkanocnych!” Families celebrate with lively street processions and feasts of ham, sausages, babka (a Polish cake), or sweet cakes filled with nuts, fruit and honey.

Procession with hand-m ade palms, Poland

In Costa De Almaria, Spain : “Felices Pascuas!” Here the celebrations are spectacular and include Roman Chariots, horse parades, a friendly rivalry between the blue and white “pasos” and a mass of colour and verve, plus of course hugely indulgent feasts.

Kind hearted pupils

show support for charity On Valentine’s Day kind-hearted pupils at Edgbaston High School for Girls joined together to show their support for children born with half a heart.

Girls attended the school day dressed entirely in red in aid of Little Hearts Matter, an Edgbaston-based charity that supports children, young adults and families affected by the diagnosis of single ventricle heart condition.

whose son was born in 2016 with half a heart and underwent surgery just 24 hours after being delivered. The school’s ‘red day’ comes as the family prepare themselves and their son for a second round of surgery.

At break time girls gathered together for a group photograph, Senior School students sold an assortment of home-made Valentine’s themed cakes at a bake sale to bolster funds raised and Prep pupils participated in heartthemed craft activities. The school was delighted to have raised upwards of £1,700.

Rachel Lewis, Fundraising Manager at Little Hearts Matter, said: “Little Hearts Matter is a small but national charity offering support to anyone affected by a single ventricle heart condition, or half a working heart. As a small charity, we rely entirely on our fantastic donors and fundraisers so we’re absolutely delighted that Edgbaston High School for Girls has decided to hold this event in support of us.”

Little Hearts Matter has offered much support to a member of the school’s teaching staff

Punjabi Dhaba

ours...

So many delicious flav

Restaurant & Takeaway

Translation: Street Food featuring Punjabi cuisine. The ever growing popularity of street food has found its way to Poplar Rd, in the form of this little restaurant with big plans. This concept is so trendy it might as well be in Camden, but luckily for us it’s right on our doorstep. Their menu features recipes typically found at authentic street food stalls in India and Pakistan designed for the busy passer-by eager for a tastey bite on the go. I chose the Paneer Tikka to start, juicy spinach ran through the centre and was dusted with vivid red spices. It came on a small bed of salad with a lime wedge to add a little extra zing! Such rich creamy textures, it felt truly indulgent. While preparing for our next course it was time to soak in the atmosphere. You would think it was a Saturday night as all tables but one were occupied and the room was buzzing with activity... suffice it to say with Punjabi Dhaba you need not pick a Friday or Saturday night to get the lively entertaining restaurant experience you’re looking for. The main courses were delightful, each with its own vibrant colour and aroma, each garnished in their own creative ways. I chose the butter chicken, but once all of the pots and plates had been laid out it was immediately agreed upon to share out the feast. And believe me, nobody went away hungry. The friendly, attentive staff looked after us well, coming by every now and again to share a story about a dish we had picked or to get us more drinks. What an absolute treat of an evening.

Special offer 4 course meal only £9.95pp!

offer available mondays (not valid on bank holidays)

Owner and head chef Sukhdave shared his exciting ideas for the future which include opening a 20ft BBQ out the back during summer, building a large glass conservatory, and painting a ‘street scene’ mural on the wall so that the restaurant can stay true to its name, even in winter. There are of course many things Punjabi Dhaba can add to its list of accomplishments already, they are currently the only restaurant in the area who offer soya meat substitutes for vegetarians, thus affording a far broader amount of choice than usual. Also, Sukhdave brings to the table his 28 years of experience cheffing in top restaurants (such as Shimla Pinks and Raj Doot), his passion for quality food is clearly evident in the culinary delights at Punjabi Dhaba.

Taxing Times

- Inheritance tax explained The first question we get asked when clients come to see us is: “Will I have to pay inheritance tax?”. The good news is that not everyone will pay inheritance tax. It will only be paid if the value of your ‘estate’ at the date of death exceeds the Nil Rate Band (NRB). The current NRB is £325,000 per person.

What does my estate include?

Your estate includes all assets held by you at the date of your death. This includes cash, property and investments, along with your share of jointly held assets. It also includes assets held overseas, such as property. If you are a beneficiary of a trust, the trust assets may also form part of your estate. Your estate will also potentially include assets given away by you during your lifetime. Your executors will need to carry out proper investigations to establish whether gifts were made by you during your lifetime, and to make full disclosure of any such gifts. They will need to report what the gifts were, when you made the gifts and who you made the gifts to. The definition of ‘gifts’ includes cash gifts and gifts of personal possessions along with paying for holidays or school fees. 20

“The Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB) is a new inheritance tax relief which will be phased in between April 2017 and April 2020. The initial RNRB will be £100,000 in addition to the current £325,000 Nil Rate Band (NRB).” Generally speaking, assets gifted over seven years before the date of death no longer form part of your estate. However, many people do not realise that there are exceptions to this rule. If your executors or beneficiaries fail to make full disclosure to HM Revenue and Customs (‘HMRC’) of all issues relevant to your inheritance tax position, HMRC can and will impose penalties.

What is the new main residence nil rate band (RNRB)?

The RNRB is a new inheritance tax relief which will be phased in between April 2017 and April 2020. The initial RNRB will be £100,000 in addition to the current £325,000 NRB. The RNRB will increase by £25,000 each year for

the following three years until the 6 April 2020 when each person will have a potential RNRB allowance of £175,000 available to them in addition to the £325,000 NRB. The RNRB is only available for individuals who are gifting their property or the proceeds of sale from their property to direct descendants and will only be available in full for estates with a net value of less than £2 million. Estate and inheritance tax planning are complicated and emotional areas. We recommend taking specialist advice to ensure that your wishes are carried out on your death.

If you would like expert and practical advice on any of the above, or on any of our other private client services, please contact Rachael Armstrong on 0121 227 3726

Heard it on the grapevine Local magazines are the next best thing to word of mouth - the most effective form of advertising. They can be found in every town and city across the country and are read by local people keen to find out more about their neighbourhood. At Swan Publishing we put our heart and soul into making this magazine interesting and useful for our readers and it also offers an excellent platform to reach a wide audience for local businesses.

1. Effective marketing to be proud of Most people in our neighbourhood are proud and protective about where they live. It feels comforting to be part of a community, and local magazines serve as an important information source. Feedback has enabled us to develop the magazine’s usefulness and we now have a solid readership. We focus on the positive aspects of local life, leaving the negative stories for the newspapers and TV news. 2. Trust - valuable in every way As consumers we spend an increasing amount of time on social media, but i’s a statistic that most people will only scan a website for 15 seconds before moving on. People interact differently with printed magazines. They tend to spend a bit more time reading a local magazine, fully interacting with the content, including the advertisements. 3. Your Ad Will Stand Out There is a myth that print is dead. The fact that you’re reading this shows that’s untrue! Many businesses have migrated their marketing online vying for the visitor’s attention in a sea of other digital ads. Often these are just an irritation and by clicking on a link one never knows if it will result in receiving unsolicited email or something that will infect a computer. It’s a risk. An advertisement in print has no threats - no links to another website. It’s easy to read and relevant details are accessible quickly.

Please mention My Moseley & Kings Heath when responding to adverts

22

4. A Longer Life While newspapers and digital ads come and go quickly, these magazines have staying power. For instance, a magazine left in a doctor’s office will be read by countless patients for many months, and your ad can be seen by a majority of them. These magazines also serve a dual purpose, providing interesting local information alongside a useful directory of local businesses. 5. Brand recognition When you advertise regularly in a reputable local magazine, people become familiar with your company. This recognition is then reinforced when they see your van livery, or premises, or meet you in person. This not only builds brand recognition, but in time, brand loyalty. 6. Credibility Local magazines are highly valued and respected publications that strengthen a sense of community. Many people use them as their primary way of sourcing local tradespeople and services - alongside asking their friends and family for recommendations of course.

If you or someone you know owns a business and would like some advice on how to get the most out of a marketing budget then call Amy Watson on 0121 689 0432.

Maximise your home’s value Planning to put your home on the market this spring? Here are some top tips from our local property expert James Llewellyn, Rice Chamberlains Firstly… the infamous ‘de-clutter’ – to give the all important feeling of space.

Kerb appeal – first impressions count – touch up paint, clean the front door and invest in a few small plants.

Lights – make sure the house is lit nicely

(lamps can give a cozy feel) and also make sure all the bulbs work!

Neutral décor is not essential but make sure your personal taste doesn’t over-shadow your home.

3 great

House plants that are for

indoor air quality

The list of volatile chemicals that can be found inside the home make for some unsettling reading. Benzene is found in some plastics, fabrics, pesticides and cigarette smoke. Formaldehyde can be found in some cosmetics, dish detergent, fabric softner and carpet cleaner. It certainly can benefit the healthiness of your home to bring in professional help, and nobody knows more about cleaning the air than these guys...

Peace Lily • Loved for its beauty and its willingness to grow even in low light • Efficient removal of formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia, toluene & xylene • Low maintainence, water once a week • Toxic for cats and dogs Fun fact: The plant’s name derives from the delicate flowers that soar high above the leaves like white flags of surrender.

Golden Pothos AKA Devil’s Ivy • Slightly more of a needy plant, likes moderate to bright sunlight • Filters out xylene, benzene, formaldehyde, toluene & trichloroethylene • Requires low to moderate watering • Toxic when eaten Fun fact: This plant has a secret that it very rarely shares, it has been known to produce beautiful yellow flowers when growing in the wild.

Spider Plant • Prefers bright light but will grow in semi shade • Battles formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, tolulene & xylene • Needs lots of water in Summer, less in Winter • Will grow lots of baby spider plants that make great gifts

Fun fact: Spider plants are an evergreen native to the African tropics. It is understood that 15 spider plants could purify the air of an entire house.

“I’m not a delivery slot.

I’m a person”.

When you hire someone to provide a service – a cleaner, a plumber or a mechanic, for example – you want to know that they will do what you want and need them to do. So why wouldn’t you want the same assurances when you’re searching for a carer for yourself or a loved one?

Take Lisa, for instance; Lisa was diagnosed at the age of four with an incurable disease. Now 54, she relies on care agencies and personal assistants to enable her to live her life to the full. But when arranging her first care packages, Lisa wasn’t aware of any systems or services to help her: “I was quite fortunate with the first agency I picked. For me, it’s all about performance and standards.” Lisa now has up to seven different care workers, all with different skills and talents. “It’s like a juggling act all of the time. It’s a case of ‘what do I want to do today? Who shall I have with me to do it?’ So one of them came with me because we were picking up a new wheelchair and she would be the one dealing with my chair on a regular basis. There’s another one who’s good at coming shopping with me”.

For Lisa, it’s important that care agencies understand her as an individual: ‘I’m not a delivery slot. I’m a person’. We launched adam LIFE in Birmingham last November for just that reason: We believe that everyone should be able to easily find and choose the right care for them. ‘With adam LIFE up and running, it’ll be the one stop place to look for care services,’ says Lisa. You tell us about the care you want. We ask our marketplace of approved providers to give you a personalised quote for their services. You compare the quotes and ratings we provide you with. You decide on the best care for you. It’s that simple.

Local author David Armstrong King’s Heath-based writer David Armstrong’s new crime novel, Black Earth, is published this month.

It’s David’s ninth book. His first, Night’s Black Agents, ‘a tale of crime and punishment that Zola wouldn’t disown’ (Literary Review,) was shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association Best First Crime Novel Award.

As well as crime fiction, David is the author of How Not To Write a Novel, a bittersweet account of the joys and miseries of being a writer, and essential reading for anyone thinking of pursuing such a dream.

The Sunday Times said of A Kind of Acquaintance: ‘British crime writing is on a roll at the moment, and this is about as good as it gets.’

Black Earth is set on the Canary island of Lanzarote. ‘It’s a beautiful, sunny place,’ says David, ‘But the story features some very dark deeds indeed.’

David was born in Great Barr and went to school in Bordesley Green. He then spent many years in Shropshire where, as well as writing, he taught English at a Sixth Form college.

My

Moseley & Kings Heath - Written by Parveen As a Brummie who moved to London for a few years for work, I was adamant that when I came back to Birmingham I wanted to live somewhere with a community spirit, village feel, and open space for my energetic four-year-old twin boys. That, along with a few other good reasons, is why I decided to move to Moseley last year.

We absolutely love living here! Moseley Park is lovely, with its beautiful lake and trees with lots of great workshops and events for kids too. Family is so important, as difficulty conceiving for many years meant I was unsure I’d ever get to this stage in life and have my boys, so living here within such a nice friendly and welcoming community means a lot to me. This summer will be our first year living here as a family – me, my husband and my boys. We’ve definitely taken advantage of what’s on our doorstep. The soft play centre is just a stone’s throw away and the boys really enjoy it, and it’s ideal for me as it gives me a little break every now and again. The amenities in the area are brilliant. There’s so much choice. With independent eateries, such as Lewis’s which does a great brunch, and there’s a good choice of high street supermarkets too. There’s even a boutique salon below a coffee shop! (Cafephilia) Living in Moseley is good for work too, as a nutritionist I practice what I preach, so being able to buy good quality healthy food locally is essential. As is the balance of work and life - this is when local green open spaces really come into their own. Kings Heath Park and Cannon Hill Park are just down the road, so it’s perfect. I’ve also found the Moseley Exchange to be a great place to work and hold presentations. It’s never easy when you’ve been out of the city for a few years, and work alone, but thanks to the Exchange I’m a happy co-worker. The people and staff are so friendly - it makes all the difference.

Parveen

“Before living here, and admiring Moseley from afar, I secretly feared it couldn’t possibly live up to my expectations as a resident - but I can say without a doubt that it has!” To share your story of your own unique perspective of the neighbourhood and what it means to you contact us on: 0121 689 0432 info@swanpublishing.org www.swanpublishing.org

Confidence; the key to happiness Saad Nawaz, former resident of Kings Heath, shares with us some wisdom he has picked up whilst working in the modelling industry.

“In the last few years we have seen a surge in women speaking out about negative body image in an attempt to deconstruct the notion of the ‘perfect body’. And rightly so. But why is it that this very serious issue, which affects everyone regardless of gender, is predominantly being vocalised by women? “Men too are worried about how they look and feel. The suicide rate is rising for males largely due to negative self image. I am a Male model from Birmingham aged 21, I have seen and felt the sorrows of males aged 16 - 30 hating how they look and thinking of giving up on life. No one should be thinking of giving up, no matter what the circumstances are we can fight and come out of situations as we all have our inner strength. I want to help people by encouraging them to take up modelling, the reason is simple; people will feel more confident. “Getting into the modelling industry means to look after yourself physically and mentally, this will make more males healthy and they will have a better outlook on life. I started modelling at the age of 19, I was told no one would want me because you have to be 6ft plus and I just don’t look like a model. I could have gone on a downer while looking into the mirror but I didn’t and it was not easy. I knew I had to fight and prove people wrong so the first thing I decided to do was to look after myself and my health. I went to the gym, ate healthy and believe me trying out different outfits and hairstyles can make you feel like a million dollars. Little things like posing in the mirror can make a huge difference. “I then researched the types of modelling and what certain photographers want in models. You see there is a huge misconception of what modelling is, some people think you have to be really tall and weigh as little as you possibly can, others think you have to look a certain way and look like a model - is that even a thing? We all can look great in our own way and bring pictures to life in a certain way.

“some people think you have to be really tall and weigh as little as you possibly can, others think you have to look a certain way and look like a model - is that even a thing? We all can look great in our own way and bring pictures to life in a certain way.” “Next I had to take some professional pictures to build my portfolio and you can do this by finding new photographers to help them build their portfolio, you don’t have to pay £1000s. I have now modelled for brands such as Asos, Blackberry Models, Asiana, Sherwani King, Bodypower, London Glamour Models, and I also came into the finals of Mr Pakistan World Pageant. “Not all people who will try modelling will be accepted, it’s like everything else in life, not everyone can be a footballer just because they are good at it. But look what it does bring, confidence, so if we go into another industry we wouldn’t shy away from anything we would bring confidence to the table. If anyone wants more information on how to pursue their modelling career please contact me. Stay Confident and Healthy!” Contact me on: Instagram: sid_official_u.k Facebook: shreddedsid Email: sidfitness@outlook.com

A Matter of Life and Death The community group, BrumYODO, returns for another week of activity, but on an even bigger scale than last year. This year BrumYODO will be partnering with mac at Cannon Hill Park and Birmingham Museum and Arts Gallery to develop a new mini arts and cultural festival. The festival is called “A Matter of Life and Death” - a diverse programme of activities including debates, art exhibitions, shows and workshops. Anyone will be able to go along and ask the kinds of questions we don’t normally get to ask such as: how do we have a good death, what is it? And how do we plan for it? Organisers will also be asking “What Can you Do?” to help family, friends or neighbours, and taking a look at approaches to death and dying across different cultures.

The fact is we need to start demanding good end of life care and death provisions, but if we don’t have these conversations then we aren’t going to know what’s needed until the inevitable happens. Activities are still being finalised but will be promoted over the coming weeks on the website: brumyodo.org.uk and also via the mac at macbirmingham.co.uk You can also follow the group’s activity on zTwitter @Brumyodo with the hashtag #lifedeathbrum 43

It is nice to feel that I can help to make a difference to people’s lives” - Sarah Bradshaw, volunteer at Edward’s Trust
