Having shown Mrs Cullen numerous sample doors, she loved the quality and made her selection along with a new worktop, door knobs, sink and tap. Not to mention that all new doors were fitted with soft close life time guarantee hinges and all drawer boxes were replaced with soft closing runners and have a weight carrying capacity of up to 40kg. Mrs Cullen was amazed at the quality of workmanship, the price offered exceptional value for money and the quality of workmanship is always second to none. Mrs Cullen commented, ‘I can’t believe it, I wish I’d have brightened up my kitchen years ago. It was a fraction ofBefore the cost of a new kitchen. Everybody that comes to our house comments with such passion and my sister said that she had made her purchase from a high street retailer and it was the worst experience she had ever had to endure.’ Every customer gets treated equally whether we are a changing a few doors or providing a completely new kitchen.

BIRMINGHAM’S CENTENENARY SQUARE REVEALED FOLLOWING £16m REVAMP
COURSE MANAGER OF EDGBASTON GOLF COURSE HAS SIGNED 6 YEAR DEAL WITH TORO Just one mile from the centre of Birmingham, the course provides golfers with 144 acres of stunning parkland, including a lake and woodland nature reserve, so keeping the maintenance up to a high level is no easy feat. “I’ll have been at the club for 32 years this August and course manager since 2007, so I know the course pretty well to say the least,” says Eddie. “Before we signed our first agreement, we had a real mix of things in the shed, but we always preferred Toro.” Despite seeing early on the clear benefits of Toro, the club needed to wait for the right circumstances in order to sign an agreement deal. But it was only a matter of time, says Eddie. “Since our first agreement we’ve had a great relationship with Jon Lewis at Reesink Turfcare and our back up service provider, Redtech Machinery. With the first agreement we saw a real improvement to the course, and I predict we’ll experience the same outcome with the updated fleet.” “We are constantly trying to improve the club and the course,” says Eddie. “So maintaining and updating the fleet on a regular basis is really important.” With the club’s 125th anniversary coming up in a couple of years, there are big plans in the works for the future, and it’s likely Toro will be a part of that. see full article at pitchcare.com
Centenary Square is the city’s largest public square and is a pivotal space connecting Victoria Square, Chamberlain Square – which is currently being developed as part of the £700m Paradise Birmingham project – Symphony Hall, the ICC and Brindley Place. The project to refurbish the square was launched with an international competition in October 2014, after the new Library of Birmingham had opened, to help regenerate the square and the Westside area of the city. Since then HSBC has opened its new headquarters overlooking the square, the Midland Metro extension has begun to be installed along Broad Street and The Rep and Symphony Hall have both announced redevelopment plans to their facades, which open out onto the space. The refurbishment had an initial budget of £10m and was scheduled to open last summer but through delays the final cost came in at £16m, with the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership providing of £10.5m. Additional funds were secured through Section 106 planning infrastructure levy, £1.2m and city council funding £3.8m. Designed by Edinburgh-based firm Graeme Massie Architects, the square IS includes a mixJUDY of treesDYKE and plants alongside a new reflection pool and AWARDED MBE IN integrated seating.

LEISURE & RETAIL << CLIMATE EMMERGENCY DECLARED IN BIRMINGHAM Moseley schoolgirl, Olivia Wainwright aged 14, updates us on what next. Birmingham has finally declared a climate emergency, and a pretty impressive one at that. We’ve pledged to be net carbon neutral by 2030, a target more ambitious than those of most climate emergency cities, beating Manchester, for example, by 8 years! So right now, quite a few people are asking me the same question: is it time to end the strike? And the answer is a firm, unambiguous no. Declaring a climate emergency is crucial, but it is just the first step. We can’t reduce the pressure until
Birmingham Council reveals how it will turn words into definitive action. We’ve had grand statements before, what we’ve never had is action. And it would be incredibly easy for those in power to stop prioritising the climate crisis, especially with a new Prime Minister on the horizon. The candidate debates have proven that the climate emergency is still at the bottom of their lists, they are much more interested in Brexit and who took which drugs 25 years ago. But here in Birmingham, we now have the chance to make real, positive change. The climate emergency declaration isn’t a burden, as some people make it out to be, it is an incredible opportunity that can lead to a healthier, happier city! So this is what the climate emergency means for the future of our city (and hopefully the West Midlands (having met with Mayor Andy Street, I know he’s listening))… It means cleaner air, more green spaces, less pollution.
BIRMINGHAM OPEN STUDIOS
It means cheaper, better, electrified public transport, that doesn’t get stuck behind miles of idling cars. It means new cycle routes, less plastic, less waste in general. It means more and better vegan and vegetarian food served in all schools and workplaces. Better recycling (that actually gets recycled rather than being burnt or sent to Malaysia), it means less litter on our streets and less valuable waste being set to landfill.
Birmingham Open Studios is now in its 3rd year, and growing annually. From its roots in Moseley and Kings Heath, the boundaries for the event have expanded outwards in all directions - now stretching as far as Bournville, Kings Norton and Hall Green. Dozens of artists of all standards open their homes/studios over the 5/6th and 12/13th October (all 11am-5pm) to allow the public to see their craft. The concept promotes the interaction between the artists and the art-lovers, allowing fans to see the environment the art is created in; A short window into the artist’s lives, ethos and methods. The event is free and family-friendly, and the artists pay no commission on sales - a relationship that benefits both parties. It’s a great chance to see some hidden exciting spaces and grab an early Christmas gift, whilst giving local artists a reason to keep creating.
10
It could even mean educating schoolchildren on the importance of caring for the climate, of working with other countries to reduce global heating.
Guide books are freely available in the area. More information and PDF versions of the guide book, please visit at:
birminghamopenstudios.com
The more I think about it, the more I can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t want to declare a climate emergency; and the councillors of Birmingham obviously agree! The climate emergency motion was put forward by the Conservatives, backed by Labour, Lib Dems and the Greens and unanimously passed by 83 councillors voting together. The Zero-Carbon, ecological revolution has begun, and you, like me, should be incredibly excited to see where it takes us.

A TASTE OF WHAT TO EXPECT AT
MOSELEY FOLK & ARTS FESTIVAL Moseley Folk & Arts Festival is set to return to the beautiful Moseley Park in 2019 from 30th August to 1st September. Every year people from across Birmingham and beyond flock to the park to witness a healthy mix of traditional, contemporary and downright experimental Folk, World and Roots music. This year will be the fourteenth edition of the festival, which showcases unsigned acts amongst well-established international artists, making for a truly exciting bill. In recognition of all the other non-musical entertainment featured across the weekend, organisers have changed the name of the festival to Moseley Folk & Arts. So for 2019 you can not only expect the usual high calibre of music, showcasing the best in Folk, World, Roots and Americana but also a rich programme of Arts & Crafts, Comedy & Cabaret, Poetry & Literature and Talks & Debate. FRIDAY On a quest to inform, educate and entertain audiences, Public Service Broadcasting will bring their uniquely spell-binding live AV transmissions to
Moseley Folk & Arts Festival. They co-headline with legendary Liverpool band, The Zutons, who have reformed in celebration of the 15th anniversary of their seminal album ‘Who Killed The Zutons’. Ivor Novello and Ivor Inspriation Award winner, Edwyn Collins is a musician, producer, record label owner, illustrator and more. He last performed at Moseley Folk Festival in 2013; 6 years on, he returns for a Main Stage slot on Friday 30th August. Exploring the boundaries between acoustic and electronic music, Tunng have become synonymous with the folktronica genre. Only a few shows in, Saint Alto have gathered attention for ‘hauntingly beautiful’ songs paired with the drive of indie folk found in artists such as Ben Howard and Bon Iver. Similarly beautiful, Adam Day aka County Line Runner uses his unique lyrics and storytelling to convey universal feelings from another angle. SATURDAY BRIT, NME, Ivor Novello and Mercury Prize Award-nominated, Jake Bugg, headlines the Saturday night in Moseley Park. His most recent album, ‘Hearts The Strain’, was recorded in Nashville with The Black Key’s Dan Auerbach and Gene Chrisman and Bobby Woods who have previously worked with the likes of Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick.
In the pre-headline slot is Lucy Rose. After starting her career singing for Bombay Bicycle Club, Lucy has gone on to release 4 solo albums, the most recent of which incorporates 70s flourishes, no drums, a rich fretless bass and light percussion to create a sense of intimacy in the songs. SUNDAY Don McLean was announced as the Sunday headliner back in November – this resulted in the highest Earlybird Ticket sales in the festival’s history. Those attending the festival can expect to hear hits such as “Vincent (Starry Starry Night)”, “Castles In The Air”, “And I Love You So” and “Crying”, as well as the anthemic “American Pie”.

Have you felt fear? Have you felt fear When you hear the key in the lock? Will he be in a good mood? Will he not? Will he smile and say ‘I love you’? Or will it be a day like most others? Will the meal you’ve cooked be wrong? Too hot, too cold, too spicy, too bland? Heaven knows what he’s going to demand. Will he be happy and smiley and fun Or will one look make you want to turn and run? Will the children be too noisy, too clingy, too messy? Or will they be his darling angels who can do no wrong? Will it be ok to laugh and sing? Or will that look, that sigh, that stare Mean it’s a day for silence?
That fear is real. The fear of being hit, punched, kicked and hurt. But those scars heal. The fear of being scared, The fear of not knowing what will happen next, The fear for your children, The fear of death. For me that fear has gone. I found freedom. I moved on.
Poem by Emma Canning
Will the children be sent to bed too early without a story? Will you? Will the phone ring and he’ll disappear And you wonder in the pit of your stomach Where he’s gone? When he’ll come back?

The Midland Hand Clinic has been gaining popularity as a locally based, easily accessible service dealing with hand, wrist and elbow problems. We pride ourselves on our friendly and professional service and provide comprehensive treatment and surgery to patients across Solihull, Central Birmingham and Warwickshire. Your fashion guide for autumn This issue Dawn Marriott shares her expert advice on how to transition your wardrobe into Autumn, without breaking the bank!
With the official start of autumn just a few weeks away and the high street stores already gearing up to start the season, I thought I’d share with you some ideas on how to make your summer clothes last as long as possible whilst making the transition into autumn. August is a tricky month with plenty of warm sunny days and our summer wardrobes still in full swing. But as the month end draws near a certain chill appears in the air that starts us thinking about our autumn wardrobes. The best way to get through the months of September and October for me is to take your summer staples and layer up. By adding a long sleeve layer underneath a summer dress can offer an instant autumnal feel. Pop on a scarf in muted colours over a denim jacket as we turn away from summer dressing.
The addition on an ankle boot either heeled or flat and chunky gives a summer dress an instant winter edge. Tights become our best friends as we keep the chill out on colder days. turn to your own wardrobe and dig out your blazers, the addition to any outfit will ensure style and warmth, try rolling back or pushing up the sleeves for a more relaxed feel. Lastly replace those summer sandals with a sporty trainer –the perfect every day shoe.
5. Long sleeved denim dress – denim is around to stay for winter but not as we know it – denim moves into dresses, skirts and skirts for a none jeans look. Add tights and boots as the winter draws in.
Here are my top finds to help to transit your wardrobe to Autumn 2019
7. Lastly as the colder weather draws in, if you haven’t already given them a go invest in a pair of trainers, they are the go to for footwear and are being worn both formally and casually – these are a great starting point if you are new to the trainers trend.
1. Winter floral midi skirt – still on trend for Autumn Winter this staple skirt will keep you cool in the final few summer days and work well to layer with a chunky knit or denim jacket, go with darker colours to ensure winter wearing. 2. Ankle boot – add to summer dresses or maxi skirt with a denim jacket for an instant autumn feel.
6. Sheer tights - the return of the tights will have most of us leaping with joy – for early autumn try sheer denier like 20 instead of full opaque, for a little coverage whilst not looking heavy.
Here’s to making your summer clothes last a while longer as we start the Autumn 2019 journey.
x Dawn
3. Chunky knit – either a cardigan or jumper in a large knit worn back to a summer dress adds warmth and style. 4. Tartan blazer – a blazer is perfect for when it’s not cold enough for a coat, buying into Tartan - one of autumn’s biggest trends will update your look and take you through to winter.

MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2019
SORTEDfood - Born in Birmingham Exclusive interview with Ben Ebbrell, founder of SORTEDfood Arts Management there because, as he put it, that was the best course in the country. During his studies he started suggesting to friends how to make easy, cheap, nutritious recipes (that would impress the girls) and scribbling them on the back of beermats in the pub. And from there came his first book ‘A Recipe for Student Survival’ which was published in 2008.
It’s a warm sunny summer’s day in my kitchen with the doors thrown open to the garden and it seems surreal to be talking to a YouTuber with over 2.2 million subscribers. (My teenage son was uber-impressed when I told him this morning.) What comes across immediately when talking to Ben, is his complete obsession with food and all things foodie. He’s a food expert first and a YouTube sensation second - and that’s why it has worked so well for him and his team. It all started at University College Birmingham. Ben chose to study Culinary
Ben started to create videos of his recipes to promote the book and what he found was the unique ability of video to show the friendship and fun around food. They started with ‘how-to’ videos but quickly evolved into entertainment around food. You’d think Ben would run out of recipes to demonstrate and talk about, but you’d be wrong. With such a loyal following Ben, and the SORTEDfood team, take inspiration from their audience who comment on videos giving them tips on how to improve recipes with twists and nuances they’d never have dreamt of.
They love to bring stories together behind the food. For example, did you know that pigs are now 30% longer than they were 50 years ago? And 90% of the bananas in the world are cloned from the same banana! Ben is always looking for ways to make food interesting and entertaining and the latest book they are working on is aimed at achieving just that. Called ‘The Bucket List’ it will include the 40 dishes you should eat before you die. Ben started food college with a dream to open a cool gastro pub and feed 60 people a day - and now he is ‘feeding’, inspiring around 300,000 people a day… with over 10 million video views a month. Tasty! You can take a look at Ben and the SORTEDfood team here:
YouTube.com/SORTEDfood - written by Amy Watson
They also explore the food industry itself with interesting insights and quirky ideas. Food should be a talking point bringing a conversation to the table.

Thinking about the future With the summer holidays stretching before us into the distance the new school term seems such a long way off, but it will come round as quick as a flash. And with it will come exciting new opportunities and experiences for children moving up in their schools. For those going into year 6 there is the prospect of moving to ‘big school’ just around the corner - one of the biggest steps in their young lives. With the choice between grammar, state and private schools, finding the right one for your child is likely to be a major focus for you this year.
We all want what’s best for our children and what suits one down to the ground may not be right for another. It’s not just about results and Ofsted reports, it’s about the feeling you get when walking around the place, the feeling your child gets too. So, to give you a helping hand in making this momentous decision we’ve put together the open day dates of secondary schools in and around the area. See page 31.

he Class of 2019 is celebrating a superb set of examination results. Sharing amongst them over 160 offers to selective independent senior and grammar schools, their talent has been recognised not just academically but in the musical and sporting spheres too. Forty-five scholarships and awards have been deservedly gained and the School joins them in celebrating this allround achievement.

Yes, this is a priority, but so too is the recognition that children must leave with the skills and resilience to face their next challenges. How do you recognise good pastoral care? Most schools’ websites boast that they provide good pastoral care. Edgbaston High School (EHS) is no exception and since its foundation in 1876 has cemented an unrivalled reputation for delivering an exceptionally strong and distinctive pastoral programme. It is obvious when pastoral care is lacking, of course, but an excellent provision is much more than just being nice: it is putting a child’s needs at the centre of a school’s operation. What does effective pastoral care mean? How do schools achieve it, and what should parents be looking for? Day to day Pastoral care involves teaching and providing opportunities for pupils to grow in their self-esteem, confidence, and independence of thought. An effective programme works hand-in-hand with academic success; it is no accident that great results and improved attainment are often a happy side effect of contributing to a young person’s personal, social and academic development. Truly excellent care should be evident every day and the fact we put our girls’
learning and wellbeing before every other consideration sets EHS apart. Teaching staff are trained to look out for subtle changes in a pupil’s behaviour - has a child been quieter than usual? Unusually worried or withdrawn? Day to day, teachers monitor pupils closely to ensure their welfare, and in the classroom work with them in order to build on their strengths and interests. Staff receive regular training in issues faced by young people today, from cyberbullying to depression, and great emphasis is placed on the school’s sense of community with a mentoring programme and vertical House system encouraging friendships between girls. Communication Schools should maintain excellent communications with parents to ensure continuity of care. At EHS, the systems for communicating pastoral concerns instantly through sophisticated software are robust. Anti-bullying measures ensure that everyone knows what is acceptable and what is not, and who they can turn to if needed. Regular Pastoral Clinics provide an opportunity for parents to discuss any aspect of their daughter’s life in school. Mental Wellbeing EHS Pastoral Teams are prepared for any non-academic issues that may arise. Self-esteem and body-confidence have long been a feature at the school, and we take the mental wellbeing of our
girls very seriously, working tirelessly to ensure that students with varying needs are supported and able to cope, thus maximising their learning opportunities. A School Counsellor is available and works in consultation with parents and girls where necessary. Embedded in the curriculum Excellent pastoral care is long term, chimes with the wider educational agenda and includes a variety of initiatives undertaken across curricular and extracurricular pursuits. For example, EHS offers each pupil their optimum level of learning, serving up academic challenge alongside the right amount of care and support, whilst an enthusiastic involvement in sport, music, House and other community activities is actively encouraged. Ultimately, real pastoral care involves the provision of activities and opportunities that develop resilience, a sound moral code and the values that will sustain an individual’s wellbeing throughout their life. If the university destinations and career success of former pupils are anything to go by, then Edgbaston High School is delivering on its promises.

School’s out for summer! At last, after a very wet June, the sun has come out in time for the Summer Holiday. The children are sharing news of where they might be going to during the long break. They will return in September eager to share their tales of beaches, cinema trips and more. However, the Year 6 children will not be returning in September but will be starting a new chapter in their education at Secondary School. The children have done fabulously well with most gaining their first choice of school, whether it be King Edward’s School, Edgbaston or one of the excellent Grammar Schools the city boasts. The children at Norfolk House School are well prepared for this transition. From September, the Year 6 children have been given positions of responsibility within the school community. Some put out benches for assembly, while others help the kitchen staff clear the dining room after lunch. The School Council proudly look after the break time toys they bought earlier in the year and make sure the younger children put them away tidily.
Away from school, the children have improved their teamwork skills during a week away with Bushcraft. They visited Safeside, where they learned what they needed to do if they caught the bus to school on their own. The children have been out and about with staff reinforcing the Highway Code and ensuring they all know how to cross roads safely. The daily Walking Bus gives the older children the opportunity to look after the youngest children. Regular visits to the Botanical Gardens involve negotiating busy roads, some with and some without pedestrian crossings. Back at school, the Year 6 children held a very successful Business Enterprise Fair where they sold items they had made, including masks, cartoons and popcorn. The children in Year 6 still feel a mixture of excitement and apprehension at the thought of leaving their small family orientated school. However, they are well equipped for the next stage in their academic careers and we have put everything in place to make sure that they are as safe as possible.

A Battle of Wills Loving Husband or Coercive Wife?
Everyone has the right to leave their estate to whomever they choose in their Will. But what happens if evidence comes to light after a person’s death suggesting that they did not have capacity to make a Will in the first place, or were coerced into making it? At VWV, we have recently helped a client challenging the validity of her friend and former partner’s last Will, on the basis of his lack of capacity. The Love Story Mr W was a wealthy businessman with assets in several different countries around the world. He and Mrs Y lived together as partners for 16 years, until 1996. Shortly after their relationship came to an end, Mr W met and fell for a Brazilian lady, 30 years his junior, and they married in January 1997. The marriage did not last and they subsequently separated. Mr W and Mrs Y remained close friends. In December 2006, Mr W and his wife were in the process of negoti

ating how to divide their substantial assets when Mr W was hospitalised for severe mental health problems. Suddenly, Mr W’s wife appeared back on the scene, taking over control of his care and finances, and ensuring that contact with his friends and Mrs Y was severed. The Wills Mr W died in 2012, leaving behind two Wills: • the first was made in October 2006, before his hospitalisation and left 90% of his residuary estate to Mrs Y • the second was made 8 months later, following the hospitalisation, and left the entire estate to his wife
As you can imagine, given Mr W’s poor health, his earlier estrangement from his wife and the dramatic change to his Will in a short space of time, Mrs Y’s suspicions were aroused and she contacted us for legal advice. How Did VWV Help? We undertook a full investigation, including obtaining Mr W’s medical records and expert medical reports. We then issued court proceedings, challenging the validity of Mr W’s last Will, on the basis that he lacked capacity to make it and that he did not know and approve of its contents. Just weeks before trial, we obtained evidence that Mr W’s wife was threatening to abandon him if he

WWW.VWV.CO.UK did not make a new Will. In light of this, we amended our original court application to include undue influence. Armed with this evidence, we entered into negotiations with Mr W’s wife and negotiated a multi-million pound settlement on behalf of Mrs Y, avoiding the cost of a full trial.
If you have concerns about the circumstances in which a loved one’s Will was made, please contact Rachael Armstrong for specialist advice on 0121 227 3726 or at rarmstrong@vwv.co.uk
What Should You Do in This Situation? Challenging a person’s Will is not straightforward and speed is often of the essence. You should therefore seek expert advice to ensure your position is protected whilst investigations are carried out.

THIS ISSUE’S LOCAL READS Enjoy this issue’s round up of recent releases from local authors...
“THAT’S NOT RIGHT!” ALEX MANNERS
Alex explains ‘the book documents my time at school, giving an insight into what it’s like for a child with Asperger’s to go to school, as well as suggestions on how schools can make changes to improve school life for us. It documents my journey from when I was first diagnosed with Asperger’s up to the present day where I am “Pursuing my Passions”. I also talk about my positive outlook towards my Asperger’s and how I believe it will be the catalyst that enables me to achieve my dreams and ambitions.’ My aim for the book is for every teacher to read it in order to gain a better understanding of Asperger’s and as a consequence have more empathy for the children that they are teaching. I also want to inspire parents and family members of people with Autism and those on the spectrum themselves. People all over the world will be going through similar challenges to those I have had and I want to show them that they are not alone and that they should not let their Autism hold them back.’

DARK TRUTHS A.J CROSS
A.J. Cross is a forensic psychologist with over twenty years’ experience in the field. She lives in Birmingham with her jazz-musician husband and is the author of five Kate Hanson Cold Case mysteries. When a headless body is discovered on a popular jogging trail, Detective Inspector Bernard Watts and his team are plunged headlong into a baffling murder investigation. Why would someone stab to death a young woman on her daily run – and take her head? When a close examination of the crime scene results in a shocking discovery linking the present murder to a past crime, criminologist Will Traynor is brought in to assist the police. Aware of Traynor’s troubled past and already having to deal with inexperienced rookie PC Chloe Judd on his team, Watts is sceptical that Traynor will bring anything useful to the investigation. He’s about to be proved very wrong … Price: £20.99

A luxurious and functional new bathroom for Jane and Phillip Jane and Phillip were so impressed with the new bathrooms that Roman Bathrooms had completed for friends and family that they had no hesitation in choosing us to refurbish the main bathroom in their bungalow. “We knew we would be in safe hands and are delighted with the results,” says Jane.
Jane and Phillip were looking for a modern update of their bathroom, something luxurious but also practical and functional. Our design included a spacious shower enclosure that includes an integrated seat, low access and a digitally controlled shower.
We selected fitted furniture to make best use of the space and provide storage with integral basin and WC. The walls and floors are fully tiled with underfloor heating for an extra touch of luxury.
Jane says, “The new bathroom is just fabulous we love everything about it, especially the clever design touches that you don’t even notice but will make the room future proof for us. These include a seat in the shower and the large easy to use flush for the WC.

I like to think that superheroes would always consider how to save the world even in their every day lives. Buying a meal? Save the planet by going vegetarian! Buying a holiday? Save the planet by exploring the UK. Buying furniture? Save the planet by buying second hand from a charity shop and giving an old cabinet new life with a fresh coat of paint! >> article continues on pg 45

HOME & GARDEN
1. Where?
2. What?
There are so many wonderful charity shops dedicated to handling donated furniture and re-selling. It’s always a better idea to think of these places when buying and getting rid of furniture, proceeds go to a great cause and the planet breathes a little sigh of relief for its resources not having been plundered for the sake of a bit more storage space for your home.
You’ll find that second hand furniture tends to be far sturdier than brand new flat pack, just in need of a little TLC. Prepping your furniture is essential and it can be quite satisfying, grab your sandpaper and go to town on that dresser. And then, choosing your colour/s and handles is probably the most fun part of all. This is when you start to see your vision come together.

3. How? I like to do all the messy work in the garden, but if you’re feeling brave then a few pages of newspaper on the floor should suffice. Make sure you take the drawers fully out to paint them and allow them to dry before returning them. Once your masterpiece is entirely dry it’s finally time to put the cherry on top, screw in your glorious handles!

HOME & GARDEN
GARDENING TIPS From head gardener Wayne Williams at Birmingham Botanical Gardens It’s the time of year when you are most likely to be enjoying the fruits of your labours in the garden – the summer blooms are looking their best and your borders and containers are at the peak of Instagrammable perfection. Over the next couple of months, there will be plenty to get on with. Here are just a few of the jobs you’ll benefit from doing: • Keep deadheading your flowering plants and do it regularly. • Once hebes and lavenders have flowered, give them a light prune.
• Climbing shrubs, such as pyracantha and wisteria, and climbing/rambling roses can be pruned once they have stopped flowering. • Keep your containers and hanging baskets well watered and feed them fortrnightly, too. • Damp down greenhouses if the temperatures soar. This helps to maintain humidity. • In September, divide your perennials when they have finished flowering. • If you have a pond, September is a good time to get rid of the debris in the water before the leaves drop off the trees. • Remove any shading from your greenhouse to ensure any remaining plants receive maximum light. It’s also a good idea to close vents and doors in the late afternoon to trap the residual heat. • Improve your soil in September, whether that’s adding organic matter or green manure.
