MY MOSELEY & KINGS HEATH, AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2018
Festival season is upon us and we are spoilt to have two exciting ones right here on our very doorstep. We met a few of the characters from behind the scenes at the Middle Earth Festival who help make it happen and bring it to life. And of course not forgetting the annual Moseley Folk Festival which this year headlines The Levellers. This issue we also bring you a special back to school feature with a helpful list of all the local secondary school open days next term. And we begin the first in a series of foraged food recipe pages. Check out our home and garden pages too, which bring you some exciting and quirky ideas to try out yourself. And if you are still stuck for something to do, the best in local events are brought together for you in our what’s on guide. Remember, you can sign up for our free weekly ‘Hello Weekend’ guide to local events because there are too many to fit into our pages here. Happy reading

MIDDLE EARTH FESTIVAL
Bringing Tolkien’s World To Life “When you get here, you can see the looks on peoples faces of just sheer enjoyment” - Bob Hawtin,’ The Gaffer’
I
n the midst of a heat wave, sat in the vast yellowing field behind Sarehole Mill, it’s becoming clear just how much work must go into the Middle Earth Festival. Though it reaps all of the benefits of being set in the original inspiration of Tolkien’s Middle Earth, ‘The Gaffer’ Bob Hawtin explains that it also takes a lot of money, support and devotion to bring it to life. Bob has been the curator of the festival for four years now and acts as the leader of a dedicated group of volunteers who give their time for the sheer love of all things Tolkien. He
8
and his team took up the reins of responsibility when it became too much for the Tolkien Society, who continue to lend their support in other ways. Middle Earth Festival attracts thousands of people each year, sometimes from as far as America, and gets everyone in the spirit of fun with its costume pageant, craft tent, axe throwing and plenty of exciting stalls. It’s not just the volunteers who show their dedication to the festival Bob tells us, “last year it tipped it down!” says Bob, “But saying that people still turned up in their
thousands, I couldn’t believe it”. Other than the festival, small pockets of unspoilt wilderness and preserved buildings are all that remain from Tolkien’s day and pay homage to our most impressive ex-resident, whose influence has reached across the globe. “This is one thing that’s always frustrated me.” Says Bob “Because this is where Tolkien played as a child, we’ve got something that nobody else has got, and it’s proved that he played here and taunted the millers and everything. We’ve got the site of his childhood… I don’t think this area makes enough of Tolkien”.
MY MOSELEY & KINGS HEATH, AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2018
Having never heard stories of Tolkien’s youth and his early involvement in the area we were eager to hear more. Bob explained “Along this river there were something like 13 mills in its time, and there were two millers in this one, and a couple in the next one down, and Tolkien and his brother used to go in and taunt them.” he continued “They called this one (at Sarehole Mill) the dark ogre, because they ground all sorts of stuff, and the one further up they nicknamed the white ogre because he would come out with flour and stuff all over him, so that’s where the white and dark ogres comes from”.
Soon we’re joined by a dwarf of Erebor, a Gondorian ranger, an orc and an uruk hai scout (pictured below) who are stopped several times on the short distance to meet us by stunned passers by, they hadn’t expected such an encounter in The Shire, a typically Hobbit inhabited area. “People have been making costumes for the last year” Bob tells us, and it certainly shows! The attention to detail is incredible, they all look as though they have stepped straight out of the cinema screen and into our world. It becomes such an immersive experience when you are stood face
to face with characters you’ve seen in the movies, anyone who has been knows just how thrilling it is. The Galactic Knights are the non profit organisation who are responsible for those incredible characters who give the festival something truly magical. The organisation travels all over the country supporting charities and helping them to raise money, and they have found a worthy cause here. Without passionate volunteers we wouldn’t have such a fantastic event to look forward to all year long. So don’t be shy this year, get on your costumes and get involved!
“We put on a costume show and mini skirmish for the kids, also an orc camp and living fantasy camp - as opposed to a living history camp...” - Rhys Hennessey / Erebor Dwarf

FASHION
WHITE
THE SUMMER CLASSIC everyone can get right
The fedora, black heels and red lipstick add an element of grunge to this otherwise dainty look, it keeps the balance beautifully.
14
Yellow shades, hoops and a bumbag make this flouncy dress decidedly 70s but in an adorable, understated way. British actor, Idris Elba, keeps it classy and sophisticated in a simple cotton shirt and linen trouser combo.
MY MOSELEY & KINGS HEATH, AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2018
FASHION
Life’s too short to be worrying about stains!
To capture the fresh, carefree look of summer it’s time to go back to basics with all white attire. Simple it may be, but plain it most certainly is not. This is an opportunity to emanate light, meanwhile you have the perfect opportunity to get creative with hair, makeup, and accessories. You don’t need to contend with the sun, you can be it.
A delicate polka dot pattern is all that adorns this summer staple, with a simple pleat hem to add texture.
British singer, Rita Ora, radiates light with glistening silver sleeves and a figure hugging dress. The shades and off-white leather clutch are only subtle additions to this stunning dress, whose attention need not be subverted.

RASPBERRY JAM
Foraged food Each issue we are picking recipes that utilise ingriedients that can be foraged locally, and are in keeping with what can be found that season.
INGREDIENTS 750g of raspberries, fresh 1 vanilla pod 500g of granulated sugar 250g of vanilla sugar METHOD
* Forageing Tip There are many local sites for forageing, try pathways alongside rivers, canal towpaths, woods and parks.
INGREDIENTS 55g caster sugar 125g raspberries 60ml vodka handful mint leaves small pinch of dried chilli flakes 125ml prosecco METHOD
RASPBERRY COCKTAIL
Step 1 Preheat the oven to 140°C Step 2 Place the raspberries in a large pan and cut the vanilla pod down the centre. Scrape all of the seeds into the pan with the raspberries. Step 3 Cut the pod into small pieces and add to the pan. Simmer the fruit and vanilla gently for about 10 minutes. While the fruit is simmer ing, warm both sugars together in the oven. Step 4 Remove the pieces of vanilla pod from the raspberries and add the sugar to the fruit in the pan. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, then bring to a rolling boil, boiling hard until setting point has been reached. Start testing for the setting point after 4 minutes, using the cold plate, flake or thermometer test. Step 5 As soon as setting point has been reached, remove the jam from the heat and allow to sit for a few minutes. Remove any scum that has risen to the surface with a metal spoon, pushing it to one side. Step 6 Gently stir the jam and pour or ladle into warm, sterilised jam jars, filling the jam right up to the brim. Seal the jars immediately and label when cool
Step 1 Place sugar and 60ml boiled water in a cup and stir to dissolve. Then cover and chill until needed. Step 2 Whiz half the berries in a food processor until smooth. Strain, discarding any solids. Step 3 Half-fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add vodka, mint leaves, chilli, raspberry puree and 2 tbs sugar syrup. Shake well, then stir in prosecco. Step 4 Fill glasses with ice, strain over cocktail and serve with remaining mint and berries.

School Feature W
ith the summer holidays stretching before us into the distance the new school term seems such a long way off, but it will come round as quick as a flash. And with it will come exciting new opportunities and experiences for children moving up in their schools. For those going into year 6 there is the prospect of moving to ‘big school’ just around the corner - one of the biggest steps in their young lives. With the choice between grammar, state and private schools, finding the right one for your child is likely to be a major focus for you this year. We all want what’s best for our children and what suits one down to the ground may not suit another. It’s not just about results and Ofsted reports, it’s about the feeling you get when walking around the place, the feeling your child gets too. So, to give you a helping hand in making this momentous decision we’ve put together the open day dates of schools in and around the area. See page 29 for school open days. Take a step back
- How to encourage good learning habits.
R
ecent research by US sociologists, Keith Robinson of the University of Texas and Angel L Harris of Duke University, NC, proposes, somewhat surprisingly perhaps, that hoveringly close parental involvement in a child’s education has little impact on school performance and no measurable influence on exam grades. That does not mean to say that parents do not play a vital role: “Parents are critical to how well children perform in school, just not in the conventional ways that our society has been promoting,” say Robinson and Harris. So, how do we lay the foundations for good learning and create this encouraging environment? Here are five achievable ways to help your child do well at school. 1. Teach the magic word ‘yet’: as in “I haven’t learned to ride a bike, yet”. Seeing learning experiences optimistically really can help develop independence and resilience.
2. Bring bedtime forward. Research shows that C/D students get 25 minutes less sleep than A or B grade achievers. Agree a time and stick to it. 3. Lead by example and learn something yourself. Show that learning can be fun, enjoyable and at times, really difficult. But, overcoming difficulties is possible! 4. Do nothing: if your child fails to complete homework, let them be responsible for the consequences. Shielding your child from the results of their actions, or lack thereof, will create a passive, dependent learner. 5. Value effort over results: not everyone can achieve top grades, but everyone is capable of trying their best. Overall, the best thing that you can do for your child is to help teach them ‘grit’, and this comes from experiencing both the highs and lows of learning.

he Blue Coat School’s vision “Limitless learning for tomorrow’s achievers” is indeed, evident under the headship of Noel Neeson, who joined The Blue Coat School just over a year ago. Since moving to Birmingham, Noel has successfully led The Blue Coat School through an excellent ISI Inspection which found pupils’ attitude to learning to be “outstanding” and their attainment to be “well above national age-related expectations.”

Remember Remember the 5th of November! Dog training advice from our local expert Hannah Molloy
Q: How can I get my dog over fireworks phobia?
A: People often call us the week before fireworks night to ask for advice on firework phobia. Sadly it’s often too late for them to do anything about it! Noise sensitivity is very common and there are lots of things you can do to help your dog if you start early enough. Firstly visit the vets making sure there isn’t a physical cause e.g. ear infection or trapped nerve that might be making your dog flinch to sound. Then we start a process called habituation: Introducing the sound of fireworks regularly on a very low level
30
so the sound becomes background noise. We also pair this sound with tasty treats or your dog’s favourite game. When fireworks go off now my dog gets his ball thrown! Whoopie! Try 10 minutes per day for a few months gently increasing the volume and you will find your dog won’t be bothered by the noise as it gets louder and louder. Keep a happy tone of voice when you’re treating your dog and beware of coaxing tones that might give your dog a hint something they might not like is about to happen. Using pheromone collars or plug ins can be a great additional measure to help your dog relax but won’t work on their own!

New Headteacher for Edgbaston School
orfolk House School, a leading independent preparatory school in Edgbaston, has appointed a new Headmistress. Susannah Palmer was selected over a number of high quality applicants to take up the role from September 2018. She is presently the Deputy Head of the exceptional-rated Mayfield Preparatory School in Walsall. Susannah’s new role sees her return to Edgbaston after a six-year absence, having previously taught at West House School for 22 years. Jonathan Challinor, Chair of Directors of Norfolk House School, comments: “We are delighted to announce Susannah’s appointment. It quickly became apparent during the recruitment process that she cares deeply about the children in her charge and inspires excellence in those around her. “Susannah’s enthusiasm is infectious, and her passion for enabling children to achieve their full potential in all areas of their life is inspiring. Outside

the classroom she is a keen musician, singer, tennis player and runner, and has twice completed the London marathon. We look forward to welcoming her into the Norfolk House family.” Susannah adds: “I am thrilled to be joining Norfolk House School and to be returning to Edgbaston. I have already been made to feel very welcome by pupils, parents and staff; the family atmosphere was evident the minute I walked through the front door. I am relishing the prospect of working with the school’s talented staff team to meet the high academic standards for which Norfolk House is well known, and to ensure that all our pupils reach their full potential. I am delighted to be working with Jonathan: it is clear we have the same vision for the development of the school.” Founded over fifty years ago, Norfolk House School offers a first class education to children aged between 3 and 11 years. It is a closely-knit school with a friendly atmosphere in which children can thrive. Small class sizes allow close attention to be paid to the particular needs of each
child. Many of the school’s pupils progress to highly respected local grammar and independent schools.

School offers girls a 21st century education based on traditional values
dgbaston High School for Girls (EHS) was delighted to host ‘Language and Literature Day’, a series of workshops and talks held with the aim of demonstrating the range of academic disciplines and careers available to young women interested in pursuing the subjects. The school was delighted to welcome award-winning actress Meera Syal to open the event. Her refreshing, frank and funny perspective on life was well-received by the girls who took away with them Meera’s inspirational words of wisdom to follow their passions and be true to who they are. The actress also took part in a special Q and A session with A level English and Drama students. Throughout the day, students in Years 9-10 enjoyed a superb range of activities including Arabic and Portuguese workshops, poetry writing with the Birmingham Poet Laureate and further language and linguistics sessions. Girls also took the opportunity to visit the Careers Fair which had attracted a wide range of exhibitors from universities and employers.
34
This event is just one aspect of a broad and balanced educational offering at EHS, where girls aged 2 2½ - 18 years benefit from a 21st century education based on traditional values. Pupils across all departments achieve high academic standards under the guidance of supportive teaching staff, and our all-round approach means that, from the outset, your daughter is actively encouraged in the development of her abilities and interests. Year 13 leavers go on to study a diverse range of competitive degree courses at some of the country’s most sought-after universities. All girls benefit from the onsite facilities including a swimming pool, multi-purpose performance space, flood-lit sports field and a fitness suite. The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) awarded EHS ‘Outstanding’ and ‘Excellent’ accreditations, endorsing its reputation as one of the leading independent schools in the area.

LEGAL & FINANCIAL
We agree we want to divorce. Do I really need a solicitor? On 1 May, the first fully digital divorce application was launched. In an age where we turn to the internet to answer our questions, do you really need a solicitor to get divorced? Is face to face legal advice worth the cost? Here are five reasons why you might want to consider it. Speed and Efficiency The legal process can be confusing if you are not familiar with the documents. This can lead to documents being returned by the court if they are not completed properly, which causes delays. More worryingly, there are key parts of the petition that need to be correctly completed to enable the court to make financial orders. Having a solicitor can make the process easy and ensure you are protected.
You may have a pension which you want to share. You may have assets abroad. There may be tax implications if you share assets.
36
Avoid Acrimony Separating is always an emotional process and communication between couples is often difficult. This can make sorting out practical matters more stressful. Solicitors are not emotionally involved and can therefore focus on resolving matters quickly. This will help maintain a better long term relationship, which is particularly key for any children involved. Future Security It is often thought that if a couple separate amicably and divide their assets, they have no future claims against each other. This is not correct. It is essential that there is a court order documenting the agreement and dismissing all other claims against each other. Without this, you are at risk of further claims (and expensive litigation) in the future if the other party’s circumstances change. Fairness and Negotiation You may have more assets in your name or be earning more. Most people need some

Complex Assets Your financial position is not always as straightforward as you first think. You may run your own business which you want to protect. You may have a pension which you want to share. advice on what is a fair outcome and how this can be achieved. At VWV, we can provide as much or as little support as you need. We offer a fixed fee first meeting, including a note of the advice given, tailored to your circumstances. This will often enable you to negotiate directly. Are you going to pay too much inheritance tax?
hanges in inheritance tax last year mean that there is now up to £250,000 in additional tax relief available on your inheritance, according to probate specialists at Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston. The Residential Nil Rate Band (RNRB) was introduced in 2017 and in April this year increased to £125,000 per person. This is additional relief available when inheriting a house that was lived in by the deceased and can be doubled to include the spouse’s allowance even if they died many years before. This is on top of the £325,000 Nil Rate Band per person that was already in place. Nikki Beggan, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and specialising in probate at Tyndallwoods said: “This means that, for example, if the husband died 20 years ago and the wife still lived in the house and passed away recently leaving the house to the children, they can use both the husband and wife’s RNRB
w www.tyndallwoods.co.uk
and NRB providing tax relief of £900,000 because NRB and RNRB are transferable from spouse to spouse.
2. Been left out of the will entirely 3. Have not been left as much as they need
“But, the relief is only there if you claim for it. That’s why it is important to engage a solicitor to handle probate rather than making a personal application to the revenue. Our fee comes from the estate and does not need to be paid until the process has been completed.”
In a case where reasonable financial provision has not been made, the IPFDA 1975 enables the Court to vary the distribution of the Estate for certain family members and dependants.
However, according to Kate Garrett, dispute resolution specialist at Tyndallwoods: “We are seeing an increase in wills being contested. Sometimes the deceased had a double life and additional children or mistresses expect to be provided for’. In a case where reasonable financial provision has not been made, the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 (‘IPFDA 1975’) is to make further financial provision for those:1.

Freedom from your past S
eptember is a time for new beginnings in the field of education and lifelong learning. Whether you’re just starting out or are contemplating a change of direction and a new career. Leaving an abusive relationship is also a time for new beginnings, a change of direction, and getting to know yourself again. To support women on that journey Birmingham Freedom Project delivers a range of programmes which are definitely a part of lifelong learning. Learning about yourself; the creative methods you may have used to manage the risk, avoid the abuse & cope with the pain; the strengths that have got you thus far and the barriers that held you back. Jacky Mulveen said: “We start with the 11-week Freedom Programme open to women 16+ who want to learn more about the reality of domestic abuse in relationships. Each session explores the abusive tactics, controlling behaviours and belief systems of the dominator and the effects on women’s health and well-being. “This programme is run continuously so you can join at any week as each session stands on its own. Everyone who attends the programme receives a copy of ‘Living with The Dominator’ and The Home Study Workbook.”

WORD ON THE STREET Here we bring you the low down of local happenings, all the stuff you need to know. To contribute to next issue’s WORD ON THE STREET page please email info@swanpublishing.org or call us on 0121 689 0432 Moseley Road Baths seeks volunteers Exciting developments are afoot at Moseley Road Baths, our local Grade II* listed heritage baths in Balsall Heath, threatened with closure by the city council for many years. A determined group of local people came together to form a charity to take over this much loved pool, and in April this became a reality.
Birmingham magistrate inspires student’s cycle challenge A student from Guildford is taking on a 100mile cycle challenge in memory of her greataunt who died from a brain tumour. Imogen Blake, 24, will do the annual Prudential RideLondon in memory of her great-aunt, Angela Mason OBE JP, a former chairman of magistrates at Birmingham Magistrates Court. Shocked by the prevalence of brain tumours and the lack of funding which is allocated to research to find a cure, Imogen is now tackling the arduous sportive in aid of the Brain Tumour Research charity. Angela, from Harborne in Birmingham, was admitted to hospital after a seizure and initially diagnosed with an encephalitic infection. She returned home to recover but when, two months later, her speech became muddled and confused, she was readmitted to hospital where doctors diagnosed her with a grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a highly aggressive brain tumour. Angela was given six to nine months to live but her health deteriorated rapidly and she passed away in July 2016, three days after her 68th birthday, and six months after her first symptom.
New kits for Moseley Cricket Club Moseley Cricket Club will be sporting brand new home and away kits this season, thanks to a generous sponsorship deal with city centre hotel, Park Regis Birmingham. This is the second time that the four-star hotel has teamed up with the club, having previously sponsored them last year too. The club, based at Streetsbrook Road, Shirley, was one of the founders of the Birmingham and District Cricket League - the oldest cricket league in the world. To find out more about the club visit: moseleycc.co.uk
The charity has raised funds, recruited staff and volunteers and negotiated a Licence to Operate with the city council to last three years. The state of its neglected and crumbling building remains a significant challenge, but happily a coalition of agencies including the National Trust, Historic England and the World Monuments Fund alongside the Friends of the Baths and the CIO are working with the City Council to help preserve and restore these gorgeous baths. As a newly community-run pool, the place is being given a real uplift by the enthusiasm of he baths’ volunteers, staff and swimmers. The group is currently seeking volunteer swim teachers (ready for the schools in September), lifeguards and reception volunteers. They will also be taking on an apprentice in the autumn. How to protect against flash floods Within the past couple of months, various areas of Birmingham have been hit by flash floods, which have wreaked mayhem and havoc to areas such as Kings Heath, Quinton, Harborne, Stirchley, and Selly Oak. Heavy rain affected these areas in particular much more significantly than anyone could have anticipated. Fire crews attended an astounding one hundred incidents in just four hours, while the region’s police force encouraged people to avoid driving due to roads being negatively affected by the adverse weather conditions. Storefronts were flooded, several roads closed, and one bus was even evacuated on the Pershore Road, where water levels were reported to be five feet deep. So, when situations like this finally clear up, we get a chance to consider the consequences of the events. Here are a few ways to deal with potential future repetitions of these unexpected downpours. Taking Precautionary Steps If you’re moving to the area (or any other area for that matter) you may want to use a risk management firm like www.argyllenvironmental.co.uk to carry out flood risk management on your property. You should also take the time to read through any insurance policies that you have. There’s nothing worse than thinking you’re insured, only to find out that your policy doesn’t cover damage from natural causes or events once the damage has already occurred. This goes for policies covering both your home and your vehicle. Reporting Issues Early On Sometimes issues develop quickly and local councils lack the necessary resources to keep up with the problem. However, there are occasionally situations where you can report warning signs of flooding and they can be combated before they develop into major issues. So, never feel hesitant to report a potential problem. The sooner that it is addressed, the better! - Shout Out UK www.shoutoutuk.org
How to protect against flash floods Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid (BSWA) have entered into a partnership with Birmingham City Women’s Football Club, allowing the charity to not only advertise and fundraise with the club, but also permit the team to become more engaged with BSWA’s day-to-day work. BSWA are the largest, holistic provider of support services to women and children who have experienced any form of violence across the Birmingham and Solihull region, having supported 7,019 women and 4,135 children in the past year. Staff at BSWA centres work with each woman to create an individual support plan, which can include: ‘Money Management’ and ‘Understanding your Rights’ courses, as well as self-esteem and confidence workshops. They even go as far as help with shopping, cooking and cleaning, ensuring that everyone they work with has the skills to move forward and create a successful life for themselves after they have left refuge. Planning permission has been secured for the demolition of a care home in Moseley which will pave the way for a luxury apartment scheme. MIA Property Group is behind the plans for 37-43 Wake Green Road, which include the demolition of the former Trident Care Home and the construction of a three to four-storey replacement with space for 36 flats. A spokesman for MIA Property Group said: “I was brought up in this area I am privileged to be assisting people of Moseley to produce such a fantastic scheme and delighted for the support by Birmingham City Council” A council document said: “After significant amendment and improvement secured by officers, the scheme would now be acceptable in terms of its design, amenity, highways, landscape and ecology considerations. “It would contribute towards the city’s housing requirements. Therefore the proposal would constitute sustainable development.” A statement submitted to the council on behalf of the applicant said: “The site is located within an established mature residential suburb and comprises of a derelict site and building in contrast to the well maintained surrounding properties within this area of Moseley. “The building is itself in poor condition and considered uneconomic to reinstate having lain empty for a number of years.” Similar planning permission of new development of 32 units in Stratford Road, Shirley was given to MIA Property Group by Solihull MBC of a former redundant police station in April 2018. OUTDOOR LIVING ROOM
f spending more evenings in your garden is on the cards this summer it’s well worth making your outdoor spaces feel more ‘homely’. This may sound counterintuitive but a few basic elements can transform a simple yard into an open-air living space.
Earth Don’t pave over every bit of land you own! While a small paved area is called for in an outdoor living room, the rest of the garden is needed for run-off during the rainy seasons. So bring the greenery right up close and personal, have trees and bushes overhanging, but keep the paving clear for your garden furniture.
Wind To feel the comfort of a living room and the tranquillity of the outdoors there needs to be a loose framework of a structure that gives the impression of a room without trying
to be one. It shouldn’t be blocking out the natural elements you wish to be closer to. Try not to shut in the space with high walls either, the breeze feels like a godsend on sweltering summer days.
Water The sound of running water has calming effects on us, and immerses us a little more in the outdoors without being invasive. A water feature is a wonderful way to enjoy water through the hot season while we scarcely see a drop of rain.
Fire The natural focal point of social gatherings, fire is the most important element to consider to prolong the life of your outdoor living room late into the night. A big stone fireplace will not only provide a beautiful source of light, but will also radiate heat, maintaining a comfortable temperature as the sun’s heat fades.
