he credentials of this talented Brummie have continued to impress right the way through 2017, most recently starring as a major cast member of the hit US TV show Super Girl as Marshan Manhunter / J’onn J’onzz, and a recurring role on The Flash. It’s also hard to forget his powerful performance in 2006 blockbuster ‘Blood Diamond’ in which he co-starred with the likes of Leonardo Di Caprio - it’s safe to say we have a true Brummie in Hollywood. Despite being a bonefide star in the American TV and movie scene David Harewood continues to show constant interest and input into UK issues and successes via Twitter. Stardom it seems has not changed Harewood from the ambitious young Small Heathan who spent his teen years bartending in town, who was (and is to this day) a Birmingham City FC fan. He has recently opened up on Twitter about a difficult stage in his 20s when he experienced a mental breakdown. He shared intimate details of this and his subsequent sectioning on World Mental Health Day, reminding tweeters of the vulnerablities we all face and the importance of identifying them, as well as being aware that reaching low points in life is nothing to be ashamed of. When celebrated actor Samuel L Jackson recently commented on Black British actors taking over the American scene Harewood was quick to jump to their defence. Jackson’s
point, which has struck a nerve in the British acting community was that American directors have been outsourcing to England as a ‘cheaper option’ but Harewood assures that having worked hard for many years in the industry he is certainly not a ‘cheap option’! He has also put forward his opinion that American directors have been favouring Black British actors (over African American actors) for their skill and also for their detachment from American history, which he explains makes it easier to play a role without the centuries of historical baggage weighing on their presentation of a character. So, what’s next for David Harewood? We can certainly expect to see more of him in future episodes of Super Girl, and here’s hoping his performance is on the radar of Justice League director Zack Snyder to pave the way for Marshan Manhunter on the big screen!

Tartan FOR HIM Tartan: It’s for everyone Tartan is so versatile that it manages to simultaneously compliment men and women without being a gender neutral style. Its bold patterns evoke the spirit of the sturdily built Scottish Highlander as well as lending itself beautifully to a more petite frame. If you’re clueless when it comes to tartan check out these classics for inspiration: - Royal Stewart - Hebridian Heather - Wallace - Macdonald Dress
Tartan FOR HER Bring on the drama... Nothing quite says winter chic like a tartan statement piece. High fashion and highstreet fashion alike seem to be engaged in an ongoing affair with these simple yet stunning Scottish patterns. This season tartan isn’t playing second fiddle to any other winter styles, so now’s a good time to get on the hunt for a dramatic tartan piece to spice up your winter wardrobe.

University of Birmingham changing lives ‘Change 10,000 Lives’ appeal is the first university appeal in the UK to count the number of lives changed rather than the amount of money raised. Launched by the University of Birmingham at the end of 2017, the appeal is about extending opportunities to thousands of young people, to raise aspirations in 11–18 year olds, develop confident and employable students and support young alumni as they start life after university. Judy Dyke of Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston is an enthusiastic supporter of the scheme. She said:

Paying for Your Care Home Fees Have You Considered All Your Options? With average nursing home fees now costing around £1,000 a week and care homes reaching £700, the question of paying for care in old age has become an increasingly hot topic. The government’s proposal to introduce changes to funding for those requiring care in their own homes, dubbed the “dementia tax” by its critics, led to rows and a swift U-turn. So what is the current situation, and what do you need to know if you are approaching old age or are concerned about your future care?
“Giving away assets to your children or other relatives may seem like a good idea but if the local authority decides that the reason you cannot fund your own care is deliberate, you could be charged with ‘deprivation of assets’...”
28
Those with capital of less than £14,250 will not be expected to use this to pay care home fees, but they may be expected to contribute income towards their care. If I give away my assets, will the local authority pay my fees? Giving away assets to your children or other relatives may seem like a good idea but if the local authority decides that the reason you cannot fund your own care is deliberate, you could be charged with ‘deprivation of assets’ and you may still be assessed as if you still owned the assets that you tried to give away. What about a Nil Rate Band Discretionary Trust? Until recently, a common way to reduce the estate on the first death was for both spouses to create Wills containing nil rate band discretionary trusts (NRBDT). This allowed up to £325,000 to be passed free of inheritance tax on the first death. Funds in these types of trust cannot be claimed by the local authority for care home fees, but they can be paid to the surviving spouse if needed.

What does the law say about care home fees? If you have capital in excess of £23,250 (in England), you will usually be expected to meet the full cost of accommodation and personal care in a residential home. The value of your home may be taken into account in assessing this figure. However, if your spouse or another close relative is living in the property, then the value of the home may be disregarded.
LEGAL & FINANCIAL However, the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB), which was introduced in April 2017, now provides for an additional £100,000 free of inheritance tax on death if you are leaving property or the proceeds of property to direct descendants. You should take specialist advice if you are trying to save care home fees, to ensure that this tax break is not missed and that you do not fall foul of the deprivation of assets legislation.

Selly Oak and Edgbaston to become One The Boundary Commission has released its 2018 review, the conclusions of which would see Selly Oak and Edgbaston constituencies merge into one. The parliamentary boundaries define the geographic area represented by each MP, and the review examines each existing constituency and recommends any changes that may need to be made to ensure that all legal requirements intended to keep the number of electors in each constituency body equal are maintained. The 2018 review has begun as Parliament decided that the number of constituencies in the UK must be reduced from 650 to 600. The law requires that each constituency other than four specified island constituencies must have between 72,031 and 78,507 electors. This is decided by a formula known as the ‘Sainte-Lague’ method. The decision of Parliament to implement these changes has not been one that has been met by universal support, with many people including third year history and politics student, Will, saying that it is a ‘massive waste of public money when there are other things to be concerned about’. However, with the electoral system constantly under fire in the attempt to have a fully equal and fair system, a more equal system could silence these claims.

Hallfield Head visits Buckingham Palace The Headmaster at Hallfield School in Edgbaston was recently invited to Buckingham Palace by Prince Andrew, Duke of York, to take part in an Education Forum organised for the Outward Bound Trust. Mr Richard Batchelor was one of 200 people selected to attend the forum where they discussed the role of how outdoor education prepares youngsters to develop vital skills for all walks of life. “I felt very honoured to have been invited to the forum as it shows a level of recognition for my work with the Outward Bound Trust. It has been a key part of my life so to be invited to Buckingham Palace for a forum about its work is amazing. “Plus, It was also a real treat to go to the throne room and meet Prince Andrew himself.” For more information about Hallfield School visit www.Hallfieldschool.co.uk

The Curious Dragons provides a fun set of learning games for children aged 3-5 to nurture and develop their numerical and reasoning abilities. It helps children learn maths but aims to instill a love of maths which will last a lifetime. Developed by a highly experienced advanced maths teacher, The Curious Dragons concept uses the ‘touch, visual and symbol’ approach employed with great success in Singapore, known as Singapore Maths. Says Lisa Minshull, West Bromwich teacher and founder of The Curious Dragons: “I have always loved maths and was eager to share that love with my daughter. I found the maths games and activities available for pre-schoolers focused more on rote learning numbers rather than developing an understanding of numbers and reasoning. I’ve researched how maths is introduced to children around the world and the methods used in Singapore really resonated with me. I began to make maths games and activities for my own daughter and The Curious Dragons were born.” The Curious Dragons is a set of 5 structured games to introduce the concepts of numbers and counting. The Curious Dragons Box one is £29.99 and available at thecuriousdragons.co.uk or amazon.co.uk

A living kitchen at the heart of the home
F
or many families, especially those with young children, a living kitchen really is the heart of the home. Working mum, Claire, loves her contemporary Mereway kitchen that blends in with a living and dining area, a perfect space for the family.
We used the colour blue as a theme to coordinate and define the different areas. The gorgeous acrylic glass panel in the kitchen, which is very aptly named Swimming Pool, is matched with the blue sofa and walls. The Grey Bardolino kitchen, with matching worktops, is coordinated with the flooring in the living area, providing a seamless connection. The lighting is well planned, with under and over cabinet feature lighting to enhance the main lighting in each room.
Efficient extraction is important for a living kitchen, and the stylish Caple extractor with black and glass hood ensures the room is free of fumes and smells. “We all love our new kitchen and living space,” says Claire, “It has plenty of storage so is easy to keep tidy and we can all interact as a family around mealtimes and leisure times with ease.”

Living in a
Winter
Wonderland B
ack in the 1600s all the way through to the 1980s in winter blankets of snow would cover the UK and transform it into another world, often staying put for months on end! It’s where the traditional scenes on all of the Christmas cards came from, the blizzards of snow that made roads impassable and schools close for weeks. This year it’s time to stop pinning all of our hopes on that most magical and rare of things: snow at Christmas. Not because we’ve been driven to pessimism by its absence but because there are so many other ways to make the holidays special, and it starts in your home.
Kitchen
Livingroom Winter wonderland theme is all about the beauty and innocence of the woodland decorated with the glow of fresh powdery snow. Bring this into your livingroom with snow-dusted woodland creatures, pinecones, white tinsel and fairy lights giving that twinkle of winter sun on frosted land.
Bedroom Keeping cosiness in mind - a valuble commodity in the depths of winter the bedroom can take on the guise of a woodland refuge and become your own holiday log cabin, Throw on some tartan covers and a couple of faux fur blankets, and complete the picture with some pinewood scented candles.
With any luck (and some serious elbow grease) the kitchen will spend Christmas decorated with festive snacks, drinks and wonderful smells... but we can do more. Create a stylised scene of falling snow with a homemade snowflake chandelier and bring the woodland inside with some fir tree inspired foliage. So no more glum faces if Jack Frost doesn’t finish the job this winter, we can do it ourselves!

Whilst we don’t have to remind you that diamonds are forever, lot 5 from our March Interiors Auction certainly proved why diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
