Spring treatment Early summer treatment Late summer treatment Autumn/winter treatment

The first three of these treatments help to improve the lawn by application of a fertiliser and a weed-killer with the final treatment being a liquid moss control and winter feed. From these treatments you can expect to see a thicker, greener lawn with a reduction in the number of weeds and moss present. In addition to these treatments, GreenThumb also offers hollow-tine aeration and lawn scarification. These processes help to reduce compaction and thatch levels, again resulting in a lusher, greener lawn. Finally, GreenThumb can also offer specialist treatments to control diseases such as

Summer in the Garden

Summer has come to Martineau Gardens, a community garden in Edgbaston. The two and a half acre site is managed by a charity and tended by a team of gardening enthusiasts, the majority of which are volunteers. The Gardens are open to the public every day except Sunday and you can enjoy a hot drink beside the Pavilion for which donations are welcomed. Martineau Gardens is a haven for wildlife. Despite its close proximity to the city centre, the area provides a ‘green corridor’ giving wildlife a lifeline to move through the urban sprawl. As custodians of this precious oasis, the charity has created a Nature Trail and Guide to explain to visitors how the Gardens are managed for wildlife. The Guide also illustrates what habitats can be seen and what species to look out for. The Trail leads visitors along a numbered track through the wooded area of the Gardens (designated a Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation

or SLINC) before emerging by the wildflower meadows and Bird Hide. Pictured below is number 9 on the trail, the Summer Meadow, a carpet of Red Campion with splashes of Ox-eye Daisy and a home to brimstone butterflies, damselflies and red-tailed bumble bees. Later in the season taller plants take over like hogweed, teasel, nettle-leaved bellflower and gromwell. We also have a ‘bee hotel’ in this area, a small open box with tubes, which was installed by OPAL (Open Air Laboratory) to provide a nest for wild bees which help our own honey bees with pollination. An inspiring place The Gardens aim to act as a source of inspiration for the sustainable use of resources and other environmental issues. With that in mind special events, environmental courses and activities are held. If you’re interested in leading a sustainable lifestyle but don’t know where to start, why not try out a one day course as a taster? Sat 4 June – Beekeeping Sat 11 June – Forest Gardening Sat 18 June – Keeping Chickens Sat 9 July – Rag Rug Making Sat 30 & 31 July – Herbal Medicine Sat 3 September – Baking in an Earth Oven Sat 1 October – Using & Fitting a Woodfired Stove

All the courses take place in the beautiful surroundings of the Gardens, and are led by trained professionals, experts in their field. The courses are one day (except for Herbal Medicine), they run from 10am until 5pm and cost £60. To book a place or read course descriptions, contact course organizers, the charity LILI (the Low Impact Living Initiative) on 01296 714 184 or via www.lowimpact.org Pictured above, environmental artist and tutor, Lizzie Bean, preparing the Earth Oven at Martineau Gardens. Students Complete Epic Literary Challenge Students at St George’s School, Edgbaston, have recently completed an epic challenge to read every single book in their school library.

Students present the cheque to Eileen Rock at St George’s School, Edgbaston

This amounted to a mammoth 7000 books in total, from short stories and novels to encyclopaedias and dictionaries, with some books containing literally thousands of pages. The challenge was set by Pia Abbott, Head of English Studies, to help encourage students of all ages to read a wide variety of books. It took almost fourteen months to complete the task and most of those who took part were sponsored, to help raise money for the Birmingham branch of the Acorns Children’s Hospice. Following completion of the task the school presented a cheque for £2345.41 to Eileen Rock, Birmingham and Warwickshire’s Community Fundraising Manager for the hospice. “Our students love a challenge and what could be better than something which 18

combined raising money for a good cause with improving their personal knowledge and increasing their passion for books,” says Sir Robert Dowling Kt, Headmaster at St George’s. The children were also given the creative task of designing a visual theme for the challenge and they came up with a rainbow and a pot of gold. This was produced as a large display board, located in the school reception for all to see. It was updated regularly to show how many books had been read and how much money had been raised. When the fundraising cheque was presented to the Acorns Hospice students from the school dressed as the colours of the rainbow. “It’s been a great event for the whole school,” says Pia Abbott. “Everyone is tremendously proud of the achievement.”

Tyndallwoods raises money for National Memorial Arboretum

Local students create sensory garden for care home

The National Memorial Arboretum in Burton-on-Trent is an extraordinary and unique place. It is Britain’s living and growing tribute to the service and sacrifice of so many for our freedom.

A group of students from King Edward VI Camp Hill School For Girls in Kings Heath have taken up gardening as part of a project to create a sensory garden for their local Trident Reach care home. They are looking for a garden archway to complete their green fingered makeover!

In March 2011 Judy Dyke of Tyndallwoods welcomed clients and friends to join her in visiting the Arboretum.

It is a place of remembrance and contemplation but also of celebration of those who gave, and continue to give, so much so that we can enjoy our lives and the beauty that surrounds us. Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Harborne have raised funds for the Edward’s Trust Memorial Garden and also for the extension of the car park of this special place.

The Arboretum is open every day except Christmas Day between 9am and 5pm last admission is 4.30pm (unless otherwise stated).

If you would like to find out more about the National Memorial Arboretum please visit www.thenma.org.uk or call 01283 792333

Having started work on the sensory garden already, after consulting both residents and carers at the home and raising £400 to cover the cost of most of the plants and equipment required, the team (group name ‘Magic Beans’) are just £150 short of the total needed to complete their project. The project is part of the Truth about Youth campaign being run in Birmingham by educational charity, Envision, and funded by The Cooperative Foundation.

from the legal work! From the point of view of the residents, the new garden will be a huge benefit as this is a project we wouldn’t have been able to do ourselves.”

Magic Beans are appealing to local businesses or those who may be able to help them by providing (or providing money towards) a garden archway that would be the perfect all-weather shelter for the bench currently used by the care home’s residents.

Group member Jane Overton, 16, said, “It’s important that young people are being active and have a role in their school or local community, as we are the future of them. The experience has been amazing; I’ve met new people and it’s probably the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. It’s inspired me to get more involved in my own community.”

Speaking about the great work that team have done so far, Kings Heath’s Trident Reach care home manager, Miss V. Brooks said, “They’re doing a brilliant job on the project. I think it’s really good how they’ve organised, sourced and financed it all themselves. It means I don’t have to do anything apart

Magic Beans are looking to complete the project in July when there will be a grand unveiling of the new look plot to the care home’s residents, ready for them to enjoy throughout the summer.

In addition to their hard work the team aims to establish a lasting link between their school and the care home, so that the school’s students may continue to look after the sensory garden in the future.
