The benefits of frequent advertising The economic slow-down, large scale redundancies and the knock on effect of belt tightening across the board is putting the squeeze on many small – and large – businesses. And this is why now more than ever businesses need to make sure they are in the best position to survive the storm by keeping and growing their customer base. And the best way to do this is to keep telling people about yourself. Keep telling them about your services and products. Because when they are ready to spend their money you want to be the first people they think of. Low cost local advertising is worth its weight in gold. And that is why at Swan Publishing we have frozen our rates for the last two years and introduced the new eighth of a page size to make advertising accessible to everyone. But just putting an advert in the media is not enough. It needs to be as regular as clockwork to really work for you. And here’s why:
1. Very few people have a need for any
specific product or service on any given day. So frequent advertising reaches this ‘thin market’ when they are ready to buy, not just when you are ready to sell.
4. Today’s ad may influence – but
tomorrows will close the deal. Like pushing a ball up a hill, it is better to push slowly than to push quickly and run out of energy half way up.
5. Frequent advertising helps you beat
your competition. If you are not advertising as much as your competition does, who is more likely to reach the consumer who is ready to spend?
6. Advertising is one of your smallest
business expenses. Yet not using it often enough can kill your business. If you give up on an advertising campaign before it has had the chance to work, all that investment is wasted.
2. Frequent advertising reaches your
customers regardless of reading habits. Frequency builds awareness. Awareness builds familiarity and familiarity builds trust. Just like dieting, advertising gets the best results over time. Each ad builds on prior brand recognition.
3. Frequency offers you the best rates. You can get significant discounts for booking your advertising over a longer period of time.
8
7. People forget! What are the statistics
about how fast people forget? It used to be that something like 80 percent forgot a message in 24 hours. But, I forget.
If you are interested in how low cost frequent advertising is in this magazine just have a look at our website which shows all advertising rates and discounts. www.swanpublishing.org or call Amy Watson on 0121 689 0432.

Small Changes Can Make A Big Difference King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) has been celebrating the individual and collective achievements of the past academic year as well as looking forward to the new term.
Heidi Hoffman, year 8 student KEHS and Bren Hellier, Education Officer at Practical Action.
One year 8 student, Heidi Hoffman, has won a national competition to show how a small change can have a big impact on lives as part of development charity Practical Action’s ‘Small Is…Challenge.’ The challenge invited students from across the country to look at technologies from the last 100 years and invent a product that could help us all lead a more sustainable future. Heidi’s design, for a water filtration backpack for third world countries that used various filtering layers and gravity to produce clean water suitable for drinking, was chosen from 250 entries involving some 2,000 students. She explained: “I got my inspiration from my granddad. When he was my age he had no clean water. This made me think of people who didn’t have what we have today and the ongoing issues with water. I looked at adverts as inspiration and then went from 14
there to design a water filtration system. I saw a problem and found a solution” Heidi was presented with her prize of a solar media player by Bren Hellier, Education Officer at Practical Action, who was impressed by the way that the school had entered into the spirit of the challenge as well as Heidi’s winning design. Presenting the prize to Heidi, she commented: “King Edward VI High School for Girls chose to get involved with the challenge to encourage its students with Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects. From what I have seen and heard, they have enjoyed researching the technologies from the past 100 years and enjoyed thinking creatively about technologies that could help us to lead a more sustainable future. This is exactly what we wanted schools and individual students to get from the challenge.”

Recycling Venture at School leads to Bumper Crops Children at St George’s School, in Edgbaston, have made use of over fifteen hundred empty plastic drinks bottles as part of an eco-project, which has helped the school earn a Bronze Award in the Eco-Schools international programme. Eco-Schools is one of five environmental education programmes run globally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The Eco-Schools programme in England is run by ‘Keep Britain Tidy. The programme helps schools embark on a sustainable journey, providing a framework to help them embed environmental principles into the heart of school life. There are 46 countries around the world that run the Eco-Schools programme. St George’s School formed an eco-group three years ago, under the guidance of Dr Jane Thomas, Head of Science at the Upper School. Over the past year groups of pupils and staff have been involved in constructing a greenhouse from 2 litre plastic bottles. One such construction featured in the Chelsea flower show in 2010. The bottles were washed by students at the school, the labels removed and the bottom of each bottle was cut off. They were then threaded on to bamboo canes and the canes were arranged side by side to form walls. The construction and completion of the greenhouse was a tribute to the very many pupils and staff who recycled their empty bottles, bringing them into the school to support the initiative. Now that the greenhouse is completed the students are successfully growing tomatoes and other vegetables, making sure they are watered and the temperature is suitable to encourage healthy growth of their crops. 20
Students from the eco-school with headmaster Sir Robert Dowling Kt and Dr Jane Thomas
This means the students are now also learning additional skills about planting seeds, germination, care and cultivation. They hope to soon be able to eat the produce they have so carefully housed and nurtured. Children are the driving force behind EcoSchools – they lead the eco-committee and help carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of their school. Callum Berry, a year 8 student who was involved with the eco project at St George’s says “We all worked really hard to create the greenhouse and when it was finished it was even more amazing than we had imagined it would be.”

Raising money for the Edwards Trust Judy Dyke from Tyndallwoods solicitors in Harborne is a passionate Brummie. She is also a patron of Edward’s Trust supporting children and families during serious illness and bereavement.
It is three years since Judy had a heart attack and this year is also the 21st anniversary of the charity. Judy decided that it was her year to join in the ‘Bupa Great Birmingham Run’ and has asked Friends of Edward’s Trust and colleagues at Tyndallwoods Solicitors and Barclays to join her in Team 21 to raise awareness of and sponsorship for Edward’s Trust. B’ham Soroptomists raise £3,300 for Charity The Birmingham Soroptomist Group which meets in Edgbaston on a regular basis have raised the princely sum of £3,300 for Cancer Research UK. Ms Celia Charlesworth of Soroptimist International Central Birmingham Club presented the cheque to Professor Paul Moss of Cancer Research UK, based at The School of Cancer Studies, The University of Birmingham. Celia had chosen to support cancer research in Birmingham during her year as President of the Club. The Club’s principal fund raising event was a charity concert held at Edgbaston High School featuring the Canoldir Choir and soloists from the High School. Soroptomist is an international organisation for professional and business women working together to improve the lives of women and girls throughout the world. The Central Birmingham Club meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 6.00pm for 6.30pm at the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. New members are welcome.
