I love autumn. Walks in the countryside, crunching through leaves, crisp sunny days, and the perfect excuse for new clothes and boots.
And if like me you are on a budget then do the smart thing and use the cash in your wardrobe to refresh your wardrobe (and this goes for you blokes out there too). Firstly, pull out those good quality designer and high street items you are really never going to wear again. Make sure they are clean and in perfect condition and take them along to Encore in Moseley village. Encore will review the items, price them and sell them in the shop. Then you get 50% of the sale price. For you, it’s an opportunity to clear out the wardrobe and make some cash - at the same time as picking up something gorgeous for yourself.

Dolce & Gabbana, Karen Millen, Prada, Ghost, Ralph Lauren, Armani, Boss, Juicy Couture and Missoni are just some of the designer labels available, but you’ll also find high street labels. Prices start from as little as £10.00 for a Ralph Lauren jumper. Half the thrill of shopping at Encore is finding beautiful clothes, but I really get my kicks out of finding a good bargain and can be found browsing the rails there at least twice a month to see what’s new. Encore is on Alcester Rd close to the main crossroads in Moseley, next door to the Junction pub. There is ample parking in the car park just a little further along. Order early and get 10% off the price of your toys and gifts.
Is the cry as you draw your sword and stand alongside Captain Jack Sparrow to defend the Black Pearl. But seriously, fencing needn’t remain the stuff of fantasy and make believe. Birmingham Fencing Club has a long standing tradition of drawing swords to compete in national competitions as well as providing an exhilarating way to keep fit and a superb way to channel the energies of children in a constructive way. As well as being a truly enjoyable sport, fencing enhances co-ordination, concentration, balance and agility. Since it was established over a century ago Birmingham Fencing Club has really moved with the times and rather than training people for active service the focus now is much more on fitness and enjoyment. There is a class for any boy, girl, man or woman over the age of eight. Classes are held at the University of Birmingham in the Old Gym and in the sports hall at Hallfield School in Edgbaston.
Togademus is the name of a Bear and a shop, and although the Bear came first, the shop is probably better known. It’s a mix of fine traditional wooden toys tree houses, trains, blocks and puzzles for children and beautiful gifts of toys and clothing for babies and toddlers.
national standard and all the equipment used meets strict criteria. Youngsters have a structured programme of activity which is both fun and appropriate to their age and ability level. Mike Whitehouse is the director of coaching and a national level tutor. He has trained the coaches and helpers currently active at the senior and junior level classes. All fencers are encouraged to try competitions at a level suited to their ability and they are fully supported at these events.
Togademus - it’s a name worth getting to know.
No deposits, no instalments, just order the items you’d like before the end of October and collect them between December 1st and the 15th. Simple, convenient and money saving. Whilst separated by gender in competitions a number of ‘fun’ mixed team events take place. Birmingham Fencing Club is very active in the region’s competitions and at County level with winners often from this club. They are immensely proud of their success in real terms of medals but most of all for their personal achievement. Being a Clubmarked community fencing club means they adhere to the strict standards set out by British Fencing, the National Governing Body. It also means that everything they teach is to 8

Your garden needs you.. Just because the leaves are falling and the flowers are fading does not mean you should abandon all attention to your garden – or spring will arrive before you know it and you will kick yourself.
Family Law Update If family relationship problems arise the timing for addressing them can be important. You may want to know your options before thinking about them and then deciding what you want to do. You can talk to one of our sympathetic and experienced specialist advisers without pressure. We listen carefully. If conflict can be avoided by reasonableness and agreement most of our clients are interested to explore that option. There is such a thing as a civilised divorce taking care of future relationships, particularly where children are involved.

quite a life changing adventure. “I was so bored with my garden, but I just didn’t know where to start. Jonathan has an amazing eye and his design has literally changed my life.”
If you need any help with design, planning or project management and you want to talk to someone local, reliable and good then Sandilands is your man (and woman).
“I am out everyday tending to my raised beds, feeding my Chickens, and enjoying the endless run of colour in the borders. The stunning lighting he has had fitted brings the garden to life at night too, which is great for entertaining, especially now with so many options for where to go.. like the new terraces, woodland path and my favourite bit which has to be the quiet arbour Jonathan built, where I can read a book and overlook my lovely new garden! We are so glad we had it all done”

It is three years since Judy had a heart attack and this year is also the 21st anniversary of the charity. Heidi Hoffman, year 8 student KEHS and Bren Hellier, Education Officer at Practical Action.
One year 8 student, Heidi Hoffman, has won a national competition to show how a small change can have a big impact on lives as part of development charity Practical Action’s ‘Small Is…Challenge.’ The challenge invited students from across the country to look at technologies from the last 100 years and invent a product that could help us all lead a more sustainable future. Heidi’s design, for a water filtration backpack for third world countries that used various filtering layers and gravity to produce clean water suitable for drinking, was chosen from 250 entries involving some 2,000 students. She explained: “I got my inspiration from my granddad. When he was my age he had no clean water. This made me think of people who didn’t have what we have today and the ongoing issues with water. I looked at adverts as inspiration and then went from
there to design a water filtration system. I saw a problem and found a solution” Heidi was presented with her prize of a solar media player by Bren Hellier, Education Officer at Practical Action, who was impressed by the way that the school had entered into the spirit of the challenge as well as Heidi’s winning design. Presenting the prize to Heidi, she commented: “King Edward VI High School for Girls chose to get involved with the challenge to encourage its students with Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects. From what I have seen and heard, they have enjoyed researching the technologies from the past 100 years and enjoyed thinking creatively about technologies that could help us to lead a more sustainable future. This is exactly what we wanted schools and individual students to get from the challenge.”

Caroline Hutton, Director of Martineau Gardens, praised the dedication of the volunteers when she said, “The award is a tribute to our volunteers who work hard to keep the gardens a beautiful place for people to come and relax in.” The award is now on display and if you haven’t visited the Gardens recently, September is a wonderful time to go. It’s harvest time: the fruits are ripening in the orchard (a tranquil place filled with pears, apples, mulberries, figs and even vines); the vegetable beds are well stocked with pumpkins, squashes
and salad leaves and jars of homemade jam (from handpicked fruit) and honey (from the Martineau Gardens bees) will be appearing on the shelves of the sales area. The Gardens are open free to the public normally, but for some events there is an admissions charge of £3 per person (£6 families, £1 concessions) with any profits made, contributing to the running costs of the Martineau Gardens charity.
How to Get There: Martineau Gardens is located at: 27 Priory Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B5 7UG opposite the Priory Hospital and five minutes walks from the mac. Limited parking is available on site or buses 1, 61, 63, X62, X64, 47 and 45 will bring you close to the Gardens.
