Winter gardening tips If you love your garden and want to get the most out of it then there are a few things to think about over the winter. have run Lupin Garden Design – planning, designing, landscaping and maintaining over 150 Birmingham gardens. This horticulturally trained pair have overseen the development and maintenance of many outdoor spaces – from the smallest urban courtyard, to large established private grounds.

Photographs by Craig Stephens

“There are several ways to improve the quality of your garden over the long winter months ahead” says Julia Watkins, of Lupin Garden Design. “The most obvious is to have a general tidy-up – clear away all the leaves from beds and borders, give your grass a final cut, and attend to your lawn and path edges, making them crisp and neat. If you can, add evergreen

interest – not just green leaved, but yellow, silver, red, lime and grey. Topiary box – conical, ball and bee-hive shapes provides structure and architectural form as well. Planting bulbs and early flowering perennials, such as primroses and lungwort, shortens this quiet season, and offers a rich source of nectar for emerging insects.” And Julia should know. For ten years, she and her business partner, Susan Brown,

Busier than ever, Susan feels the key to their success is two-fold. “Firstly, we offer a wide range of services – anything from a one-off tidy up or regular maintenance, to large design and planting work. We can come in and tidy or plant the smallest border, or we can redesign a whole garden. The second reason for Lupin’s continued growth appears to be their business model. “We didn’t intend this to happen” says Susan, “but as we expanded, we took on more women. It seems that we filled a gap – not just for our workers, who we train to the highest standard, but for our clients as well. People trust us to let ourselves in, to keep hold of keys, to be responsible, hard-working and professional on site, and to leave the gardens looking immaculate.”

En garde… Is the cry as you draw your sword and stand alongside Captain Jack Sparrow to defend the Black Pearl. But seriously, fencing needn’t remain the stuff of fantasy and make believe. Birmingham Fencing Club has a long standing tradition of drawing swords to compete in national competitions as well as providing an exhilarating way to keep fit and a superb way to channel the energies of children in a constructive way. As well as being a truly enjoyable sport, fencing enhances co-ordination, concentration, balance and agility. Since it was established over a century ago Birmingham Fencing Club has really moved with the times and rather than training people for active service the focus now is much more on fitness and enjoyment. There is a class for any boy, girl, man or woman over the age of eight. Classes are held at the University of Birmingham in the Old Gym and in the sports hall at Hallfield School in Edgbaston.

national standard and all the equipment used meets strict criteria. Youngsters have a structured programme of activity which is both fun and appropriate to their age and ability level. Mike Whitehouse is the director of coaching and a national level tutor. He has trained the coaches and helpers currently active at the senior and junior level classes. All fencers are encouraged to try competitions at a level suited to their ability and they are fully supported at these events. Whilst separated by gender in competitions a number of ‘fun’ mixed team events take place. Birmingham Fencing Club is very active in the region’s competitions and at County level with winners often from this club. They are immensely proud of their success in real terms of medals but most of all for their personal achievement.

Being a Clubmarked community fencing club means they adhere to the strict standards set out by British Fencing, the National Governing Body. It also means that everything they teach is to 8

Dame Kelly Holmes Opens Fitness Suite at Edgbaston High School Double gold Olympic medallist and sports personality, Dame Kelly Holmes DBE, inspired girls to ‘go for gold’ at a special sports conference for school girls at Edgbaston High School.

Before giving her keynote speech Dame Kelly Holmes officially opened the School’s new ‘Holmes Fitness Suite, a new addition to EHS’ facilities, following a multi-million pound development that was completed earlier this year. Dr Ruth Weeks, headmistress at Edgbaston High School for Girls, said: “We were delighted to welcome Dame Kelly Holmes to open our fitness suite and to address delegates at the Girls Go Gold conference. The day served as a celebration of the successes of our young sportswomen and I am thrilled that an inspiring role model such as Dame Kelly Holmes was able to lend her support and encouragement to our next generation of athletes.” 16

The national Girls Go Gold conference is an annual event organised by members of the Girls’ Schools Association (‘GSA’). Baroness Sue Campbell, Chair of UK Sport, opened this year’s Girls Go Gold conference, with Dame Kelly Holmes DBE providing the keynote speech. Additional break-out sessions on sports psychology, sports physiology, a day in the life of an elite performer, the Olympic Games and sports nutrition were led by specialists in their field from the University of Birmingham and Kelloggs. The school’s recent development programme also included improvements to the School’s facade and Reception area as well as creating a new Sixth Form Centre, an extended library and several new classrooms and ICT suites.

Birmingham pupil awarded Bill Bryson science prize at House of Commons A Birmingham pupil received a national science award from Bill Bryson at the House of Commons today. at a ceremony at the House of Commons, in the Speaker’s House State Rooms in September. Bill Bryson said at the event: “It is so inspiring for me as one of the judges to be presented with these entries every year because they are so full of enthusiasm and excitement, and that’s something that can’t be faked – you can really feel the sincerity.

Evelyn Henderson, in Year 9 at King Edward VI High School for Girls, won the Secondary School Winner prize in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Bill Bryson Prize, a science communication competition aimed at primary and secondary schools. Hundreds of entries from around the country were judged by Bill Bryson and the President of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Professor David Phillips. Evelyn won £500 for her school and £100 for herself with her winning entry titled “The Beauty of Chemistry – The Chemistry of Beauty”. (http://prezi.com/oj9ofjcdaxjy/ chemistry-our-life-our-future/) She was presented with a certificate and prize money by Professor Phillips 18

“There are so many exciting, novel ways to convey the wonder of science. The prize gives kids a chance to shine in a way they wouldn’t otherwise, and to really express themselves and experiment with what they can do.” The Bill Bryson prize was founded in 2005, when the Royal Society of Chemistry sent a copy of his book ‘A Short History of Nearly Everything’ to all schools and colleges in the UK. He generously donated the royalties from these sales to establish a schools’ science communication award, and his cash donation was matched by the RSC and his publisher Transworld. For the first time the Royal Society of Chemistry this year actively welcomed entries from international schools to mark the UN International Year of Chemistry 2011.

Classical music for the next generation Who says classical music is not for the young? Tyndallwoods partner Judy Dyke has been getting involved in a project which aims to inspire Birmingham school children to sing and engage in contemporary classical music. when singing, and engage the next generation in contemporary classical music.

Judy joined Karen Daw of Town Hall Symphony Hall for the exciting “Sing for All: Creative Foundations Concert” brought together by the THSH Education & Community Department. The project opened up the challenging world of contemporary classical music for schools and aimed to extend singing opportunities for young people of all ages and abilities. Over the past six months, teachers and music leaders attended workshops in Symphony Hall, discovering how to inspire confidence

School children and professionals shared one stage under the baton of John Gibbons and sang in the presence of Karl Jenkins, the composer of Stabat Mater (from a 13thcentury poem ‘The Sorrowful Mother was standing’). The piece incorporates both traditional Western music (orchestra and choir) with ethnic instruments and vocals. It was an unforgettable concert experience. Mellow Fruitfulness at Martineau Gardens Autumn has arrived. At Martineau Gardens, the community garden in Edgbaston, it’s time to enjoy the harvest.

The Garden, which is looked after by a team of volunteers and Martineau Gardens staff, is two and a half acres of organically managed landscape.

The harvest has been bountiful this year, and all are invited to share in the ‘fruits of their labour’: jams, plants and seasonal produce are all for sale and it’s been a bumper year for honey made by the bees of Martineau Gardens.

There are vegetable plots, woodland, bee hives, a bird hide and a myriad of other features to explore.

Fungi Foray

The squashes have ripened in the vegetable plot, the apples have been turned into jellies and chutneys, and the scythes have been taken to the summer meadow to prepare the land for winter.

The Martineau Gardens Nature Trail provides a pleasant walk along meandering paths through a wooded wildlife area. There are plenty of leaves to scrunch through and piles of deadwood log piles of wood, located here and there, is a great place to look for fungi.

Bike recycling project moves up a gear Birmingham Bike Foundry has broken into the high street after a year operating out of a lock up in a music studio. Birmingham Bike Foundry opened up shop at 1539 Pershore Road - Stirchley High Street. For just over a year Birmingham Bike Foundry have been working, with notable successes, towards building a stronger and more dynamic cycling community within the city. The Bike Foundry have built upon the normal services offered by a bike shop to offer a unique range of resources to Birmingham cyclists. One of the principal activities of the business is bike recycling. Members of the public donate old and unwanted bikes to the Bike Foundry, whose mechanics expertly repair them, giving local people access to bikes that are both fairly priced and good quality. Their mechanical skills are also put to good use by those requiring bespoke builds, ranging from renovations of vintage bikes, to fixies and bike polo rides.

Birmingham schools offering bike polo clubs, giving youngsters a great introduction to this fun new team sport. The move to Stirchley represents the product of a years’ work from a very unique organization. With its co-operative structure Birmingham Bike Foundry enables its workers to have control over the direction of the business, enabling it to expand into the exciting areas of work it has taken on. This project will surely soon play an invaluable role in the local community, and the wider populace of Birmingham cyclists.

Birmingham Bike Foundry also offer training courses which empower people to become independent in their life as a cyclist. Maintenance training ranges from basic repairs and safety check s to highly technical jobs such as wheel building; the trainees’ ability to pick and choose modules means that everyone can develop exactly the skills they want. Sessions covering cycle skills are also available, enabling some of the Bike Foundry’s customers to reach aims such as navigating complex roads to find a safe commuter route, and some to simply ride a bike for the first time! Over the past year the Bike Foundry’s experience and skills has also led to them working with large organizations in addition to individuals.
