LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! The children of Edgbaston had better get set for a life in front of or behind the cameras. Young Film Makers is bringing to South Birmingham the chance for children aged 8 to 16 to star in and make movies.
They even allow you to try it first to see if you like it. It sounds like an opportunity not to be missed.
They can get their hands on professional cameras and with guidance from experienced filmmakers create, act in, direct and write their own films. Young Film Makers have been running film schools for over 5 years and believe that children should be given the chance to learn and enjoy one of the most exciting and rewarding careers in the world. 5

Bike recycling project moves up a gear Birmingham Bike Foundry has broken into the high street after a year operating out of a lock up in a music studio. Birmingham Bike Foundry opened up shop at 1539 Pershore Road Stirchley High Street. For just over a year Birmingham Bike Foundry have been working, with notable successes, towards building a stronger and more dynamic cycling community within the city. The Bike Foundry has built upon the normal services offered by a bike shop to offer a unique range of resources to Birmingham cyclists.
The move to Stirchley represents the product of a years’ work from a very unique organization. This project will surely soon play an invaluable role in the local community, and the wider populace of Birmingham cyclists.
One of the principal activities of the business is bike recycling. Members of the public donate old and unwanted bikes to the Bike Foundry, whose mechanics expertly repair them, giving local people access to bikes that are both fairly priced and good quality. Birmingham Bike Foundry also offers training courses which empower people to become independent in their life as a cyclist. Maintenance training ranges from basic repairs and safety checks to highly technical jobs such as wheel building. Sessions covering cycle skills are also available, enabling people to navigate complex roads to find a safe commuter route, and some to simply ride a bike for the first time!

School Dinners past and present A new book celebrating 125 years of Cookery at King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) in Birmingham has been launched. Entitled Recipes for Success, the book also celebrates the remarkable achievements of Florence George, the school’s first Cookery teacher. She wrote the King Edward’s Cookery Book, first published circa 1901, which became a best-seller on both sides of the Atlantic and was a popular text book in many schools in the first half of the twentieth century. Whilst Florence George’s book included recipes such as Calf ’s Head with Egg Sauce and Brain Balls, Recipes for Success includes more traditional childhood favourites such as Bread and Butter Pudding and Toad-in-the Hole. Also included are a selection of dishes from around the world, including Tortsfi (polish dumplings) and Aloo Paratha (from India), 16
which reflect the diversity of the student population and local community today. Recipes for Success is written by Sally Huxley, who has taught Food Studies at KEHS since 2004. Many Old Edwardians supplied recipes and anecdotes for the book, and submitted lovingly preserved exercise books from Cookery lessons. Helping Sally to launch Recipes for Success was Ann Tonks, Managing Director of Opus restaurant in Birmingham, and KEHS school governor. Recipes for Success, which is priced at £12.99, is available to purchase direct from KEHS. All proceeds of the book go to the Bursary Fund, which helps to support places at the school for students from lower income families.

Winter Wonderland at Martineau Gardens Wrap up warm, pull on your outdoor boots and enjoy a walk around a winter wonderland at Martineau Gardens this month. Lots of animals will be coming into the Gardens, as they look for shelter and forage for food to sustain them through the winter months. Food is provided for birds and there are several bird feeding areas. Take your binoculars (or borrow a pair) and enjoy a session in the bird hide. You can also borrow a guide to help identify different species who visit. You can look out for tracks of nocturnal and shy animals in the mud or snow. Birds, foxes, badgers and other small mammals are always about looking for food. Younger visitors can follow the Explorers’ Trail – a new quiz which encourages every budding nature detective to look out for wildlife clues.
How to Get There: Address: 27 Priory Road, Edgbaston, B5 7UG It is opposite the Priory Hospital and five minutes walk from the mac. Limited parking is available on site or buses 1, 61, 63, X62, X64, 47 and 45 will bring you close to the Gardens. Tel: 0121 440 7430 info@martineau-gardens.org.uk www.martineau-gardens.org.uk Open: Monday to Saturday, 10am until 4pm (closed Bank Holidays) Admission: Free entry except for some events and courses.

Keeping it local this Christmas Why not take some of the hassle out of Christmas by shopping local this year? Internet shopping is always hit and miss and you end up paying delivery charges on even the smallest items. The city centre is heaving and parking costs a small fortune. On the other hand, just up the road Moseley and Kings Heath high streets are overflowing with delightful independent shops selling toys and gifts for all the family and parking is inexpensive.
So, here is a whistle-stop tour of your local shops
20
Christmas Cards and wrapping paper For a range of stunning cards and wrapping paper Pottery and Pieces has it all. You can also look in WH Smith and Birthdays in Kings Heath and all of the charity shops which have a good selection too.
Trees, wreaths and mistletoe Contrasts the florist on Poplar Road always has loads of Christmas trees of all shapes and sizes and they also do wreaths and mistletoe. Make sure you don’t leave it too late; they always run out well before Christmas Eve.
Babies and children
Him
Togademus, a traditional toy shop, is a stunning new addition to the shops on Poplar Road, and Pottery and Pieces is a well established gift shop that has been stocking delightful gifts for your little ones for many years. Also Armadillo on Poplar Road has some lovely unusual and crafty gifts.
For a techno gift you’ve got Game Point and there are a couple of phone shops on the high street. Pottery and Pieces also has a good choice of things for him and don’t forget Polar Bear Records on York Road.
If you are looking for more mainstream gifts then there is always Argos and WH Smith. And for those on a budget and for stocking fillers there are lots of budget shops along Kings Heath High Street.
Moseley and Kings Heath both have outstanding farmers markets selling local produce, and the Moseley one includes a craft and arts market in the one before Christmas for unusual handcrafted gifts. See the ‘what’s on’ page for dates.
Teenagers Often the hardest to buy for, if you’re not taking the safe route of cash or a gift token there’s always Game Point, various phone shops, and of course, Argos and WH Smith.
Her People on Poplar Road always has something special for the lady in your life – if she’s 4 or 84! The Jewellery Stop a few doors down is an overflowing Aladdin’s cave of beautiful jewellery and accessories. A little further on is Armadillo for fair trade gifts and nip over to York Road where the Kitchen Garden Shop has some lovely things for the garden. Pottery and pieces in Moseley has a plethora of gifts to choose from.
Food
Another must visit for Christmas is the independent cheese shop on York Road, Capeling & Co. The cheese enthusiast proprietor can tell you all about his cheeses and this is the perfect time of year to indulge in a really special cheese-board. Then there’s Maison Mayci in Poplar Road and on Moseley High Street for mouth-watering French pastries, tarts and bread.
So if you have read this far you must agree you have no excuse but to shop local this Christmas. 21
great expectations! Whole school open days: Saturday 7th January 2012 Tuesday 3rd July 2012

Classical music for the next generation Who says classical music is not for the young? Tyndallwoods partner Judy Dyke has been getting involved in a project which aims to inspire Birmingham school children to sing and engage in contemporary classical music. Judy joined Karen Daw of Town Hall Symphony Hall for the exciting “Sing for All: Creative Foundations Concert” brought together by the THSH Education & Community Department. Over the past six months the project has opened up the challenging world of contemporary classical music for schools and aimed to extend singing opportunities for young people of all ages and abilities.
