Fancy trying something new this year? If you are interested in taking up a new physical challenge this year – but don’t like training outside and definitely don’t like team sports why not try Aikido for size? Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art that is genuinely suitable for all ages and body types. It is basically a form of self-defence but much more fun than that sounds. In the Aikido Fellowship’s friendly classes you will learn how to avoid an attack and how to deal with an attacker. You will learn to use a wide 12

variety of throws, locks and hold-downs to protect yourself. If that sounds a bit dangerous it reality it isn’t. The instructors are all very experienced and new techniques are carefully broken into simple stages that are practised as slowly as needed. As you gain confidence you will practice in small groups with more advanced students and they will

support and encourage you. Everyone remembers what it was like when they started! There is no need to buy the white kit (called a gi) that is shown in the pictures. Beginners usually wear joggers and a light sweatshirt or similar loose clothes. The lower age limit in adult classes is 12. There is no upper limit and definitely no need to be athletic - just prepared to give it a go. You are more than welcome to watch a session at either of the Aikido Fellowship’s local clubs (Selly Park Technology College for Grls, Tuesdays 7.30 – 9.30 and Calthorpe School Thursdays 7.00 – 9.00). The Aikido Fellowship is a not-for-profit organisation so fees are reasonable and there may be discounts for full-time students and family groups. If you decide to take the plunge the first class will be free so what have you got to lose?

For further information: call Sensei Peta Goodman on her mobile (07891407213) or visit our website www.aikidofellowship.org.uk for more information about aikido and more class details.

A window on your world The Midlands’ only period timber window and door showroom is having an open weekend in March so if you are thinking of changing your windows or doors this year then grab this chance to see, touch, and walk through some of the highest quality products you will find on the market. The Harborne Sash Window Company showroom opened a year ago and since its launch open day the company has experienced its busiest year since it was established in 2006, fitting over 1,000 windows and doors in 2011. To celebrate the first anniversary of the showroom, the open day will feature a prize draw to win a case of Blenheim Palace Merlot, and is also raising money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. All you need to do is take yourself along and The Harborne Sash Window 16

Company will donate £1 for the charity collection box for each person who walks through their doors. You will be treated to a drop of wine, tasty nibbles, delectable cup cakes and proper coffee – plus the opportunity to look at, touch, open and close, walk through and sit in a stunning range of timber windows, doors and a fully furnished orangery. Many people buy windows and doors – often at great expense – just by looking at a corner sample provided by a salesman who comes to their home. Some people even buy windows and

doors via the internet without any contact with the product they are purchasing. Now you can get up close and personal with the windows and doors that could become a feature of your home for many years to come. This is often one of the biggest expenses when refurbishing a home so it is worth taking the time to do a bit of research.

The open weekend is on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 March from 10am – 4pm at: The Harborne Sash Window Company, Studio 5-6 Weekin Works 112-116 Park Hill Road Harborne, B17 9HD. Tel 0121 427 8800 www.harbornesash.com

As well as supplying the highest quality timber windows and doors with a 30 year guarantee and fitted by their own team of experienced craftsmen, The Harborne Sash Window Company has been selected to operate the Midland arm of The English Glasshouse showcasing and delivering superb timber orangeries and conservatories. Last year Mandy and John Gannon transformed their Edgbaston home to include a stunning orangery kitchen / dining room from The English Glasshouse. John said: “Having an orangery has changed the way we spend time in the house. We practically live in here.” “The English Glasshouse were great to work with. They were clean and tidy and made sure the project came in on time and on budget.”

Edgbaston Reservoir Open Day Join the rangers in celebrating Local Nature Reserve status for the reservoir. Find out more about this fantastic site for wildlife and join in with a range of activities suitable for all the family. The open day is on 18th Feb from 11am to 3pm. Situated close to the city centre, the stunning Edgbaston Reservoir is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. It was built in 1827 by Thomas Telford as a top-up for Birmingham canal system and is still used for that purpose today. The 70 acres site is mainly open water and supports a variety of birdlife; it is also a valuable city site for animals such as newts and bats. A belt of woodland and grassland encircles the reservoir providing an oasis of natural beauty in an urban setting. There are currently no public toilets on site. The Ranger Service for Perry Barr and Ladywood is based at Edgbaston 20

Reservoir. It provides a public information service, an annual programme of events and educational sessions which include school visits, Forest School and work experience placements. Working in partnership with the police, environmental services, wildlife trust and other agencies the aim is to protect, promote and enhance the natural environment of the Reservoir for the benefit of its wildlife, heritage, the local community and visitors. Walkers and joggers can enjoy the approximately 2.8 km (1.75 miles) path around the reservoir. The Birmingham Rowing Club and the

Midland Sailing Club are based here, and there is a Sea Cadet Centre. Fishing is also very popular at the site. The main entrance and car park is at the end of Reservoir Road. The car park opens at 8am and is locked at dusk. There are three other pedestrian entrances, Rotton Park Road, Ickneild Port Road and Gillott Road. It should be noted that the Gillott road entrance is a flight of steps.

Address: The Ranger’s Lodge,115 Reservoir Road, Ladywood, Birmingham, B16 9EE. Edgbaston Reservoir has an active friends group. ‘Friends of Edgbaston Reservoir’ was formed more than 10 years ago. The group monitors and promotes the area as a designated Site for Nature Conservation (SINC). Since formation the FER have maintained a constituted

presence in the area to represent the views of local people and other organised users (wildlife and bird watchers, Midland Sailing Club, Birmingham Rowing Club, the anglers and the walkers, cyclists and joggers) to both fight unwanted development and to promote sensitive improvements for the benefit of both the general public and wildlife. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the reservoir and its surroundings. FER organises various events each year in an attempt to encourage a wider appreciation of the interesting features around and on the water.

Calling all budding writers Do you have a burning issue you would like to tell the local community about? Edgbaston is a vibrant, diverse and lively suburb that Edgbaston Directory is proud to be a part of and we are keen to represent it within these pages in the best way possible. A photograph can tell a thousand words, so make sure you have a good selection to support your story, or if necessary we can take supporting photographs. Deadlines are crucial – we need any content before the 10th of the month for the following months issue and often earlier than that in order to plan it in. Edgbaston Directory is developing its editorial pages and looking for the stories out there that would be of interest to the readers if only they knew about them. 1. We can give your community group a voice. 2. We can help you publicise events in the area. 3. We can spread the word about up and coming musicians, artists, writers. 4. We can raise the profile of issues affecting the wider community.

22

Since the launch of Edgbaston Directory in 2006 we have written about countless events, charities, community organisations and tourist attractions – but we want more! So don't be shy. Cycle challenge raises money for the One Handed Musical Instrument Project Stephen Hetherington recently set off on his B2B Cycle Challenge riding from Birmingham to Bordeaux in support of The One-Handed Musical Instrument Project with the support of family and friends and Tyndallwoods Solicitors Martin, Harriet and Judy. There is presently no orchestral musical instrument than can be played with one hand. As a result hundreds of thousands of people with disabilities in the UK, and millions across the world, are excluded from music making. The project aims to invent new instruments to open full and undifferentiated participation in musical life; whether at school, in the home, or in a professional ensemble. The success of the project will have a profound impact not just on individuals but on society’s relationship with disability, opening new 24

realms of achievement and possibility. Stephen Hetherington, the project founder, was setting off on his solo Birmingham to Bordeaux bicycle ordeal, a trip of some 1000 kilometres, taking around ten days and he was sent off with a powerful rendition of The Dam Busters by musicians of the CBSO conducted by Michael Seal shown with Stephen Maddock, CBSO Chief Executive. If you want to find out more about the wonderful work of this charity please visit their website at www.ohmi.org.uk

Step back in time With a membership to Moorpoool Crown Green Bowling Club. The club is situated in Moorpool Estate, on the corner of Park Edge and Ravenhurst Road, behind the Fishing Pool Harborne. The bowling green was created around the same time as the construction of the Moorpool estate which saw 500 homes built on a 54 acre site between 1907 and 1912. The estate was an example of how affordable housing could be provided in the future, many of the original character remains, and all of the original properties remain. The Bowling Green and Fishing Pool, (the pool is an original pool fed by underwater springs), with the presence of large trees adds to the semi-rural feel of the area and the abundance of wildlife, There is no doubt The 26

Bowling Green and Fishing Pool are the jewel people with of the estate. Moorpool Bowling Club has 51 full members and 10 social members. It is a mixed club with member ages ranging from 50 to 91. The bowling season starts around the 1st of April until 1st October. You can play seven days a week if you chose or once a week, it is your choice.
