KEHS Head of Sports Sarah Blanks with members of the Under 14 and Under 15 hockey teams.

KEHS Head of Sports, Sarah on the psychology of winning

Blanks

As London 2012 fast approaches, and with the spotlight firmly on sporting achievement this year, King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) Head of Sports Sarah Blanks knows only too well how mental toughness is equally as important as physical ability. The former England Hockey team captain, who has over 150 caps to her name, and who also teaches Psychology at KEHS says: “Sports and psychology go hand in hand. Attitude is absolutely fundamental to success. It’s something we believe in very firmly at KEHS. “Whether you’re an Olympic athlete, or an eleven year old child who wants to learn how to do a forward roll, you are only going to succeed with a positive mental attitude. “The skills gained through sports are in many ways no different to those gained in the classroom – leadership, perseverance, motivation, setting and 14

achieving goals and self-discipline are all qualities needed for the girls to lead successful lives in the future. London 2012 will provide a focus for activities at KEHS over the coming months. “We’re currently working on a dance production involving over 100 dancers which will have an Olympics theme, says Sarah. “We’re also working on a project with the art department where the girls are creating pieces based on iconic sporting images. Sarah concludes: “My aim is that by the time our students have left us at 16 or 18, we have initiated a life-long love of sports and fitness that they can take with them into whatever career they pursue.”

Apprentice Star Helps EHS Pupils Stay Ahead of the Game Pupils at Edgbaston High School for Girls have enlisted the help of former BBC Apprentice finalist Claire Young to help them stay ahead of the business competition. Fourteen year old (Year 10) pupils at the school were joined by over 150 pupils from girls’ school across the UK for the first round of ‘Ahead of the Game’, a competition which aims to encourage girls to ‘think like an entrepreneur’.

to gain much valued enterprise skills. The UK desperately needs to increase its percentage of women in business and initiatives like ‘Ahead of the Game’ will help to create the next generation of female entrepreneurs.”

After developing their business ideas, 28 teams were required to pitch for funding and one of only 10 places in the second round.

The event, hosted at Edgbaston High School, is one of four regional Enterprise Days across the UK. The winning teams from the first round will be selected shortly, all of whom will be invited to put their proposal into action during the second round of the competition later this year. The competition culminates with the final round in London in early December when the overall winners will be announced.

Businesswoman and social enterprise champion Claire Young got things off to an inspiring start with a presentation full of tips and ideas. The former finalist on the BBC’s Apprentice show says: “In an increasingly competitive job market it’s essential for students 18

Edgbaston fundraisers get on their bikes for sport relief A group of employees from an edgbaston based storage company have taken part in a run and bike ride to raise money for Sport Relief. Access Self Storage employees Carl Larkin and Julian Hamilton completed a nine mile canalside run from the Erdington to Selly Oak Store. The route took in refreshments at the mailbox and Carl’s dubstep sounds provided the soundtrack for the second half of the journey past Five Ways and Birmingham University in Edgbaston. They were joined at the Selly Oak store by Malcolm McGlone (Coventry), and Selly Oak Customer Richard Barnaby on bikes. The four hardy souls then rode canalside to Coventry, firstly via the Grand Union Canal where one of the participants who shall remain unamed, auditioned for Jackass and nearly ended up in the water. The second leg of the 22

bike ride was by road and culminated in a 28 mile trip by the time the group reached Coventry which was a great achievement. A great time was had by all and special thanks go to Malcolm for arranging a pizza at the finish, and sales manager Jason Jones for providing Jelly Babies and Lucozade Sport at various checkpoints throughout the route. So far the event has raised over ÂŁ100 with more donations coming in. You can make a donation by visiting and a video of the day is also available for viewing at http://my.sportrelief.com/ sponsor/accessrunandride

Bowled over In France you’ll find families, groups of men, couples, and groups of young adults all doing it. Bowling that is – or Boules as they call it. So what do they know that we don’t? Crown Green Bowling is one of very few sports that can be enjoyed by young and old alike and by people of all levels of fitness. It is the perfect sport to bring all members of the family together. And Central Edgbaston Bowling Club on Harborne Road is the perfect place to go for an enjoyable sunny afternoon with a bit of exercise and friendly competition. This delightful club was established in 1888 and was reputed to have been visited by none other than Winston Churchill when he was in office.

28

As well as a lovely bowling green, there is a club house with a bar that opens on match days, tea and coffee facilities, pool table, dart board and dominoes. Weekly activities: Tuesday 11am - 1.30 – over 60s mixed Wednesday evening – any age (9-90) mixed Thursday evening – any age mixed Friday 11am – 1.30 – over 60s mixed Saturday 3-6pm – any age mixed Sunday 11-2.30 – any age mixed

You can either join in with these activities as a member, or a visiting non member, or you can use the green at other times for games of your own or join the members for a friendly game. If you decide to join and compete in one of the leagues then you will be part of a team that travels around the region playing matches and hopefully adding to the impressive display of trophies and awards.

The club is looking for new members so if you are interested all you need to do is call and arrange a visit. Central Edgbaston Bowling Club 44a Harborne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B15 3HE
