Fresh veg to your doorstep There’s no beating local, organic, seasonal produce. It’s healthier, more affordable, and tastier too! A veg box scheme offers all this, and even better it’s delivered straight to your door. Riverford is one of the UK’s largest veg box schemes, offering a wide range of organic produce, and maintaining a very local offering through a network of regional farms and local growers. Riverford’s founder, Guy Watson, started delivering vegetables locally to 30 friends in Devon. The company now delivers around 40,000 boxes a week to homes around the UK. Riverford customers value the freshness of their seasonal produce and the fantastic flavour of food grown without chemical fertilizers and preservatives.

Riverford’s recipe of the month: Penne with broad beans, bacon, mint and cream [Serves 4] Ingredients: 500g shelled broad beans |

350g penne | 100g pancetta or smoked streaky bacon, cut into fine batons | 1 tbsp butter or olive oil | 1 garlic clove, crushed | 200ml double cream | a small bunch of mint, roughly chopped | 2 tbsp freshly grated Parmesan | sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cook the broad beans in boiling salted water for a few minutes, until tender. Drain and set aside.

The range of food you can get in your box includes fresh veg and fruit, dairy, preserves and free range meat.

Cook the pasta in a large pan of boiling salted water until al dente. Meanwhile, fry the bacon in the butter or oil until just beginning to brown, then add the garlic and stir for a minute without letting it colour. Stir in the cream, mint and broad beans and simmer for a few minutes. Then add the Parmesan and season to taste.

Visit www.riverford.co.uk/sacrewell or call 01780 789700 to find out more.

When the pasta is done, drain well, toss with the sauce and serve immediately.

A little TLC makes everyone a winner Unlike the National Lottery, TLC Lottery is not creating millionaire winners every week. Instead, over the last 10 years it has raised over £1million for each of its Three Local Charities – Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and Focus Birmingham. The charities jointly own TLC and the proceeds are split equally three ways. Regularly spotted at local supermarkets and garden centres, the small team at TLC have seen lottery membership grow steadily despite the current economic gloom. It’s only £1 per weekly entry and you can win £1,000 every week or one of the other 162 cash prizes ranging from £5 to £100. You are also entered into the Rollover Jackpot which, if not won, increases by £250 per week up to a maximum prize of £10,000. Win or lose, the Three Local Charities are always winners, receiving funds from TLC each month so the money can be put to good use without delay. 12

TLC made total charitable distributions of over £456,000 in 2011, so every £1 weekly entry really does count and make a difference to local people. This covered all the catering costs across the three Acorns Children’s Hospices, paid for 4,500 hours of nursing care at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and funded the purchase & running costs of minibuses at Focus Birmingham. Summer is blooming in Martineau Gardens Summer has come to Martineau Gardens, a beautiful community garden in Edgbaston and the growing season is well underway. There’s plenty of watering, planting and weeding for the team of volunteers who look after the organically maintained gardens, under the tutelage of Stewart Holmes, the Gardens’ therapeutic horticulturalist. Some volunteers have learning disabilities, others are stroke survivors and some are simply going through a ‘rough patch’ and find their time in the gardens a real tonic.

bring the family for an outing, do some bird spotting or simply while away a lazy afternoon, there is much to discover.

Volunteering is an important part of how the Gardens are run, but you don’t have to be a volunteer to enjoy a visit. The Gardens exist for all to share in – whether it’s to meet up with friends for a picnic,

The Gardens aim to act as a source of inspiration for the sustainable use of resources and other environmental issues. If you’re interested in leading a

sustainable lifestyle but don’t know where to start, why not try out a one day course as a taster? There’s an unusual range of courses on offer over the summer months including two Bee Keeping courses (Saturday 16 June & Saturday 18 August) a food smoking course (Saturday 7 July) and a course on Permaculture gardening (Saturday 21 July). All the courses take place in the beautiful surroundings of the Gardens, and are led by experts in their field. The one-day courses run from 10am until 5pm and cost £60. Advance booking is essential with the course organisers, LILI (the Low Impact Living Initiative), via www.lowimpact. org or telephone 01296 714 184. Storytelling Festival A highlight of the year is the Storytelling Festival – a first for the Gardens. Joining forces with the Traditional Arts Team, the Storytelling Festival takes place at Martineau Gardens on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 June 2012. The festival will be a family-friendly event with a programme of storytelling, music and crafts that combine ‘knowledge of the earth’ with storytelling wisdom.

Tickets are available in advance from the Martineau Gardens’ Box Office, by post or on the gate (subject to availability). Full details of ticketing arrangements are on the Martineau Gardens’ website at www.martineau-gardens.org.uk or by calling 0121 440 7430.

The line-up includes performances celebrating Grimm and Shakespeare in a story yurt, swashbuckling stories for young and old around the pirate ship, a feast of food and stories around the earth oven, a teddy bear’s picnic for the very young and stories around the fire under the night sky. Tickets cost £7 for a single or £14 for a family (Friday and Saturday evening 6pm – 10pm) or £10 single and £20 family for Saturday day (10am – 6pm). 19

CITYSCAPES - Panoramic Views on European Coins and Medals April 27 2012 – October 6 2013 London, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Barcelona, Venice and Budapest… Explore the historical landscapes of all these cities – and more – in Cityscapes: Panoramic Views on European Coins and Medals at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts in Edgbaston. The third in a series of prestigious shows organised in collaboration with the British Museum, Cityscapes highlights how, between the mid 16th century to the early 19th century, many of the great cities of Europe applied the artistic tradition of the city view to their own coins and medals – the most circulated art medium. In a world dominated by dynasties and kings, these gave physical expression in silver and gold to urban pride and civic power and showcase the exquisite skill of engravers working without modern technology. The absorbing exhibition includes 100 loans from the British Museum, as well as objects from the Barber’s own coin collection – one of the finest 22

collections of Roman, Byzantine and medieval Islamic coins in the world. The wonderfully intricate images in Cityscapes feature churches, citadels, fortifications, harbours, civic buildings, houses and suburbs, emphasising military or commercial power, wealth, strength and above all, divine protection and favour. The exhibition at the University of Birmingham-based Barber Institute is accompanied by a rich and diverse programme of educational activities, lectures, gallery talks, concerts and film screenings. Cityscapes is also complemented by an online exhibition, which can be visited at www.barber.org.uk/coins The Barber Institute of Fine Arts University of Birmingham Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2TS Opening hours: 10am-5pm Monday to Friday 11am-5pm Saturday and Sunday

Bowled over In France you’ll find families, groups of men, couples, and groups of young adults all doing it. Bowling that is – or Boules as they call it. So what do they know that we don’t? Crown Green Bowling is one of very few sports that can be enjoyed by young and old alike and by people of all levels of fitness. It is the perfect sport to bring all members of the family together. And Central Edgbaston Bowling Club on Harborne Road is the perfect place to go for an enjoyable sunny afternoon with a bit of exercise and friendly competition. This delightful club was established in 1888 and was reputed to have been visited by none other than Winston Churchill when he was in office.

As well as a lovely bowling green, there is a club house with a bar that opens on match days, tea and coffee facilities, pool table, dart board and dominoes. Weekly activities: Tuesday 11am - 1.30 – over 60s mixed Wednesday evening – any age (9-90) mixed Thursday evening – any age mixed Friday 11am – 1.30 – over 60s mixed Saturday 3-6pm – any age mixed Sunday 11-2.30 – any age mixed

You can either join in with these activities as a member, or a visiting non member, or you can use the green at other times for games of your own or join the members for a friendly game. If you decide to join and compete in one of the leagues then you will be part of a team that travels around the region playing matches and hopefully adding to the impressive display of trophies and awards.

The club is looking for new members so if you are interested all you need to do is call and arrange a visit. Central Edgbaston Bowling Club 44a Harborne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B15 3HE
