The simple pleasures in a vegbox I have been receiving a weekly vegbox from Riverford Organics for several months now as an experiment and the experience has been most enjoyable. Every week I check what’s in the box online and then arrange my other shopping around it. And what has surprised me is how creative it has made me in the kitchen. I have discovered new and delicious vegetables and learned new ways to cook. I might be easy to please, but I do get a thrill when I open my front door and there is a lovely box of healthy shiny fruit and vegetables on the doorstep. This week, for example I have cherries, bananas and satsumas for the fruit bowl, and broad beans in their shells, mushrooms, romano peppers, tomatoes, swiss chard and courgettes. Some weeks I get more ordinary vegetables like onions, potatoes and carrots but the contents of the box varies 8
completely from week to week. Also within the box there is usually a recipe card which includes a few suggested recipes for this week’s veg. Riverford has loads of different veg and fruit boxes to choose from, I have gone for the medium fruit and veg box which seems to be working out just fine. You can also add other things into your box – last week I bought some lovely organic ham, sheep’s cheese and home-made homity pies. I like getting a vegbox because I feel immense satisfaction feeding my family healthy, nutritious food. And having it delivered to my door certainly beats dragging my children round the supermarket!

Tooth Whitening If you have ever wondered about tooth whitening then wonder no more, local dental surgeon Dr Ahmed Farooq explains all.
Tooth whitening is a process used to chemically alter the colour of teeth. This is achieved by removing stains and discolouration by adding a whitening agent (hydrogen peroxide) to the tooth surface. This results in the tooth looking whiter and gives an overall more youthful appearance.
due to natural erosion and exposure of the inner surface of the teeth (dentine), which is darker. The gums also recede with age, showing more root surface, which again tends to be a darker colour. The foods and drinks we consume also play a part. Drinks like red wine, tea and coffee can cause staining. Tar and nicotine from cigarette smoke are also major contributors.
Why do teeth become discoloured?
How white will my teeth become with chemical whitening?
The dazzling movie star teeth that you might see on TV are not a natural colour. Just because your teeth aren’t as white as those Hollywood smiles, do not assume that they are discoloured. There is a natural variation in the colour of teeth from person to person.
The answer to this question is dependant on several factors. To start off with, as mentioned earlier, our age, lifestyle and natural tooth colour varies. For this reason, the effects of tooth whitening will vary. Most people, however, will respond very well to whitening treatments depending on what method is used. There are a small group of individuals who may only notice a small difference. The best person to advise you on your likely result
What is tooth whitening?
Age and lifestyle factors are the main reasons for tooth discolouration. As you get older, the teeth become darker 16

will be your dentist. They will note your tooth colour before starting treatment, and they will try to estimate an outcome. Is tooth whitening safe? Tooth whitening is very safe when used under careful instructions from the dentist. The agent used comes in a gel form, which should not come into contact with the gums, as this may cause discoloration or burns. Most people experience no adverse reactions, but some patients may develop some sensitivity around the time of treatment depending on the strength of agent and method used. This can be easily resolved by using some sensitive toothpaste to mask the effect and by avoiding hot or cold food for 48 hours.
What are the benefits of tooth whitening? Whitening is now relatively cheap and easily accessible from your dentist. The main benefit is a healthier looking smile without removing any of the tooth structure. Whitening is a much more conservative approach to changing a smile compared to crowns and veneers, as these methods result in changing the shape of the tooth. The World's Biggest Coffee Morning is back! It’s that time of year again when people, businesses, or groups sit up and think – right it’s time to register for Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Moring. Last year, people making time to have a coffee morning raised £10 million. That’s enough to fund 200 Macmillan nurses for a year. That’s how much this coffee morning thing matters. And this year it’s going to be easier than ever to do, as there’s a rather nice new Coffee Morning Kit to help us. We all get one for free when we register. Thanks to the thousands of people who baked, bought and supped for the 2011 World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, the charity smashed its fundraising target and raised a record-breaking £10million to help people affected by cancer. Residents from Edgbaston kept in line with the trend, with 34 coffee mornings raising over £57,600 – a phenomenal achievement. But it would be great to go one step further this year and to raise even more. 18
Macmillan’s Area Fundraising Manager, Nic Skipwith, said: “822 people are told every day “You have cancer” and we want to make sure that everyone single one of those people, and their friends and family are supported in whatever way they need. So please sign up now!” This year the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning falls on Friday 28 September and hosts can join the party early, by registering at macmillan.org.uk/coffee or calling 0845 602 1246. Find out more at macmillan.org.uk/ coffee, follow the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on twitter @macmillancoffee or find it at facebook.com/macmillancoffee.

New kid on the block There’s a new place to see and be seen in Kings Heath – Fletchers bar on York Road opens on 5 July. Fletchers is a chic and stylish bar with a retro industrial look, complemented by gorgeous vintage fabrics and walls, and an imaginative use of lighting. You would not believe the transformation from the slightly scruffy, homely Cornerstones Café it used to be to the sexy, funky bar it has now become. The bar offers a range of good wines and real ales and serves cocktails if that’s what you fancy. You can also get something to eat from their mouth-watering menu. There is comfy sofa seating as well as high bar stools, and an intimate outside walled courtyard area for those balmy summer evenings (we should get one or two). Before it even opened Fletchers was chosen to host the launch of the Kings Heath Walk of Fame at the end 20
of June with live bands performing throughout the afternoon. You can expect to find regular live music, comedy and cabaret as well as quiz nights and wine tasting events at Fletchers. It is a great place for a quick after work drink, romantic night out, or a boozy evening with your friends. This fabulous addition to the already buzzing nightlife on York Road has been launched by local businesswoman Tracy Fletcher who runs the Kitchen Garden Café in partnership with Brett Rehling. Opening times Fletchers is open evenings and weekends, Thursday-Saturday until 1pm, Sunday-Wednesday until 11pm.

A little TLC makes everyone a winner Unlike the National Lottery, TLC Lottery is not creating millionaire winners every week. Instead, over the last 10 years it has raised over £1million for each of its Three Local Charities – Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and Focus Birmingham. The charities jointly own TLC and the proceeds are split equally three ways. Regularly spotted at local supermarkets and garden centres, the small team at TLC have seen lottery membership grow steadily despite the current economic gloom. It’s only £1 per weekly entry and you can win £1,000 every week or one of the other 162 cash prizes ranging from £5 to £100. You are also entered into the Rollover Jackpot which, if not won, increases by £250 per week up to a maximum prize of £10,000. Win or lose, the Three Local Charities are always winners, receiving funds from TLC each month so the money can be put to good use without delay. 22
TLC made total charitable distributions of over £456,000 in 2011, so every £1 weekly entry really does count and make a difference to local people. This covered all the catering costs across the three Acorns Children’s Hospices, paid for 4,500 hours of nursing care at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and funded the purchase & running costs of minibuses at Focus Birmingham. Are you working on that bikini figure right now? Well if you think you’re attempting the impossible then take heart, here is someone who lost 6 stone using the Lighter Life programme. Amanda Dodd is now busy juggling her new business venture with stage performances, being a trendy mum and may even take up modelling.
“One of the reasons LighterLife is successful is that it pulls together groups of women who don’t want to talk to their friends and families about their weight.”
And it’s all thanks to losing more than six stone in weight because she was too embarrassed to tread the boards again when a pal offered her a part in a play.
Following her weight loss Amanda was promoted and admitted: “A huge element of that promotion was the fact I felt more confident after I’d lost weight.
Amanda joined LighterLife and went on the Total Programme, where conventional food is replaced by four foodpacks a day before moving to the Management Phase where food is gradually reintroduced in a controlled manner alongside counselling to change attitudes and bad habits.
“I was a size 22 and now I’m a 10 I still get a thrill from that fact and that keeps me motivated.”
“Within three months I’d lost almost four stone and was in a musical production of The Full Monty” Amanda said. 26
For more information about LighterLife please contact Debbie Blackburn on 07758 193173 or Lisa Maidment on 07813 989684 to attend a free, no obligation, Initial Consultation.

Anyone for tennis? Swept up by Wimbledon fever? Then why not go down to Edgbaston Archery and Lawn Tennis Society’s open day on Sunday 8 July and have a taste of Wimbledon here in Edgbaston. Visitors to the Archery’s open day will be able to enjoy strawberries and cream washed down by Pimms in beautiful surroundings. For the more active there will be opportunities to play tennis and have coaching from one of the club’s coaches. The “Archery” as it is affectionately known, is a real gem of a tennis club. It caters for and welcomes all standards of player. There is a very active junior section, a wide variety of teams for the 28
competitively minded of all ages, and great coaching and mix-in sessions for beginners and improvers. The club boasts 6 grass courts, 4 shale courts, and 2 floodlit artificial grass courts. The regular weekly programme includes mini tennis, cardio tennis (think aerobics with a tennis racket), coaching for adult beginners, junior coaching, men’s nights, ladies nights, Friday family evenings, and Sunday mix-ins offering tea and tennis. For those that are interested the Society enters teams in several local leagues.
This is the oldest Lawn Tennis Club in the world situated in a stunning location, and the bar terrace is a sun trap where the after game drink tastes especially good.
Why not go down to 14A Westbourne Road between 10 and 4 on Sunday 8 July to try it yourself. If you can’t make it, or need more information, email them at ealtsmembership@gmail.com.
