FASHION Oxfam have their own website stocking some great designer brands that you can browse and purchase Visit oxfam.org.uk/shop to take a look.

This issue Dawn Marriott shares her expert advice on the kind of shopping habits our planet desperately needs us to embrace... in the UK with a staggering 8 million items only being worn once. In a bid to raise awareness and slow down our consumption Oxfam launched several campaigns last year, backed by the likes of Kate Moss and Ellie Goulding, encouraging us to try to make more sustainable choices when buying clothes. Their campaign encouraged us to try to buy more pre-loved items, reducing the need for constant newness.

For some time now we have seen headlines around the fashion industry and how we need to slow down our consumption. Our planet is suffering, and the fashion industry is the world’s second biggest polluter. Fast fashion is one of the biggest culprits, with throwaway purchases been made by thousands of people daily. In the last 15 years, global clothing production has doubled to meet our ever-growing demand. It’s estimated that during the Christmas period we spent £3.5bn on new clothes

16

Buying second hand isn’t for everyone, but the good news is that it doesn’t have to involve rummaging around in second shops any more – there are plenty of places you can buy online in a bid to do your bit to save the planet, as well as bagging yourself a bargain in the process. So if you fancy joining the revolution and trying to shop pre-loved items more, here are some great places to start: Oxfam have their own website stocking some great designer brands that you can browse and purchase. Visit www. oxfam.org.uk/shop to take a look.

Depop is relatively new but already has over 11 million users. The App based marketplace is simple to use, whether you are buying or selling you will find everything from high street to designer listed at reasonable prices. Download the app to get started. Vinted is another online marketplace similar to Depop with millions of users selling high street brands. Vinted also offers buyers and sellers the opportunity to swap items saving cash and the planet. Download the Vinted App to start shopping. And not forgetting EBay where you can buy anything from a pair of thermals to a Ganni dress all at reasonable prices. But if buying second hand isn’t for you – what about hiring a new dress? Dress agencies can be found in most cities and are a fantastic way of getting your hands on the latest catwalk styles at a fraction of the catwalk prices. If high-end fashion is more you, head over to My Wardrobe HQ the UK’s premier destination for luxury fashion rental. Offering a real solution to the fast fashion crisis, with designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney,

FASHION

Chanel and Sandro. You can rent an item at the touch of button or if you really want to you can buy it outright. All items are pre loved by someone else making this the perfect way to shop sustainably. The government says that we only have 12 years to make the changes needed in order to save our planet. Even making small changes to the way in which we shop can make a difference, slowing down our consumption of Fast Fashion can only have a positive impact, and buying more pre-loved will help to slow down demand too, so surely it’s time that Fast Fashion went out of fashion?

INCLUDE, INVOLVE Birmingham based mental health charity Kinmos, is embarking on an exciting new phase in its history. Kinmos is a much - used local charity that is committed to the social inclusion of adults with a history of mental health issues. In celebration of its recent forty-year anniversary and following a successful bid for a grant from Birmingham City Council, Kinmos is delighted to announce the launch of an exciting new project, the Kinmos Volunteer Programme, which will aim to reduce social exclusion issues in Kings Heath and Moseley. The grant has enabled Kinmos to recruit a Volunteer Coordinator who will recruit and train volunteers from the local community. Nicola Harris, chair of Kinmos explains: “Many of the people who use Kinmos, lack the confidence

INSPIRE

to use many services that are available to them. For a whole variety of reasons, they feel unable to make use of amenities such as swimming pools, parks and museums and to access the many educational opportunities that are open to them in the city.” Nigel, the service manager added: “We hope that the volunteers we recruit will develop trusting relationships with our service users and help them to access community facilities. This in turn will increase the confidence of our service users and they will be able to join in community activities independently and begin to feel a closer connection to the community in which they live”.

KINMOS MENTAL HEALTH CHARITY Please contact Nigel Browne on 0121 444 8333 or email nbrowne@kinmos.com Details of all our activities and ways to get involved with the charity are on the Website. www.kinmos.org

Kinmos would love to hear from anyone who has any time to spare and would like to join the volunteer programme. Volunteers will be trained and given full support by the Service Manager and Volunteer Coordinator.

HOW TO COMBAT 3 MAJOR TRIGGERS OF

STRESS & ANXIETY

Self reflection can be our salvation when we are kind, or our undoing when we are not. This issue we are looking at the some of the naughty little tricks our brains play on us and effective methods of self care that will over time relieve stress and anxiety by cultivating a positive inner narrative.

1. Intrusive thoughts Imagine a big pink fluffy elephant. Now, spend the next ten seconds thinking of anything else, anything but that big pink fluffy elephant. Pretty difficult, right? It seems even more impossible when there’s a huge list of things you’re trying to banish from your mind, almost like it’s consuming all of your energy to keep them at bay. But the idea of intrusive thoughts being seen for what they are and let in willingly then let out again, is a far less exhausting way of dealing with them. Next time you find yourself trying to fight against unwelcome thoughts, things that cannot be changed, relax, let them in, accept them, and let them out again. Just one less little battle to deal with in your day.

20

2. Catastophising

3. Mind reading

Things that sound entirely reasonable inside our heads, are sometimes, occasionally a bit over the top. That’s okay, part of our quirks and charm! But, unfortunately when that voice isn’t questioned it can get louder, and more convincing, and eventually it can prevent us from leading happy and free lives. So, when a voice (prophesying doomsday style repercussions to your trip to the supermarket) begins weaving its dark tale, it’s very important to tell it something reassuring like ‘actually, I think it’ll be nice’. It may sound far too simple to be effective but positive energy is quite magical like that, and in time it will start to pop up without you even trying.

Apparently, 93% of communication is non verbal, so who am I to tell you not to mind read! But having said that, you’d be amazed how often we get it wrong. It’s facsinating that our brains can instantaneously translate a slight raising of eyebrows as a weirdly specific paragraph of insults about our outfit. When in reality, idiosyncrasies in facial expression are rarely as explicit in their meaning as words are. If it’s something you struggle with, try to tip that percentage in favour of verbal communication, accepting that what people say is likely to be what they mean.

STUNNING STATION WILL PUT EDGBASTON ON THE MAP, SAYS WEST MIDLANDS MAYOR ANDY STREET “The University of Birmingham and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital are two landmarks of the West Midlands, but the fact is they have outgrown their 49-yearold station. “With a new life sciences campus on the way and the university and hospital continuing to expand, this area needs an impressive new station for students, staff, visitors and the Edgbaston community. West Midlands’ Mayor Andy Street says stunning plans for a revamped University Station in Edgbaston will put the area on the map by providing a ‘fitting gateway’ for visitors. Plans have now been submitted to Birmingham council chiefs for the new-look station, which has become one of the region’s busiest rail transport hubs. Mr Street, who heads up the West Midlands Combined Authority, said: “These striking plans reveal a station that will provide a fitting gateway to visitors to an area which is seeing huge amounts of growth. “It will also help lower the amount of traffic on roads in the area, which is a big concern locally.

“That is why we are putting this investment in place and are committed to getting it done in time for the Commonwealth Games. “Edgbaston is showing huge growth and deserves a state-of-the-art railway station that reflects that growth. “The tabling of the proposals with council planners is a significant step towards making this a reality for local people.” The current University Station in Edgbaston is used by 3.3 million passengers a year – vastly more than the 400,000 it was designed for in the 1970s. The expansion of the University of Birmingham, together with the on-going development of University Hospital

Birmingham and major regeneration of the surrounding area, have all played a part in driving the huge growth in passenger numbers. The West Midlands Rail Executive (WMRE) and Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) are leading the project to create a station fit for the future capable of handling 7.2 million passengers a year. The new station building, located close to the existing station, will offer a bright and comfortable space and new facilities for passengers. Platforms will be connected by a wide footbridge which will also provide direct access from the station across the canal to the University campus. The new station is expected to be completed and open by the end of 2021, in time for the 2022 Commonwealth Games when the University hosts the hockey and squash competitions. It is one of a number of significant rail improvements being driven by Mr Street, including plans to reopen stations in Kings Heath, Mosley and Hazelwell with revamped stations in Coventry and Wolverhampton.

BUILDING RESILIANCE THROUGH

HEALTH & WELLBEING By Sarah Grocutt

What is Resilience? Resilience is the ability to bounce back, know how to cope with setbacks, learn how to manage yourself and your resources, it is also the ability to function in times of stress, recover, adapt and change. However, do we know what skills we need to pick ourselves back up. Why do we need to develop resilience? Without this skill, it is easy to give up, this could apply to any area of life, study, career or sport. One of the skills for developing resilience is perseverance, it is defined as the continued effort to keep going. Where do we start? You can start by building your mental resilience through enhancing your health and well-being. Some simple steps to start with are: to improve your physical health by eating well and exercising, develop your sleeping

habits, incorporate meditation through mindfulness, celebrate your successes and achievements. This is fine when everything is going well, but what about when something comes along to throw us off course? Compare this to a gymnast balancing on a beam, or consider a ballet dancer performing a complex routine such as a pirouette or split jumps. How many times do they wobble and fall? It is only with determination through getting back on the beam, pushing through with persistence will they achieve their objectives and advance to perform a complex routine. Sarah has over 25 years in the fields of physical education and training, 15 as a school gymnastics coach.

GREAT CRAFT COURSES AND WORKSHOPS TO TRY IN AND AROUND BIRMINGHAM IN 2020

TO FEATURE A LOCAL INTEREST STORY ON THIS PAGE CONTACT

As part of Hallfield School’s five-year development plan, they officially unveiled their new dedicated Music Department in January. Over 50 members of the Hallfield community gathered to celebrate. Special guest Professor Julian Lloyd Webber, Principal of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, cut the ribbon. Julian gave a thought-provoking speech; that music was a birthright and absolutely a sustainable career for children to pursue. Guests enjoyed a concert from three Hallfield pupils along with specially invited guests including Kieran Vas (an Old Hallfieldian), Juliet Barwell, Jiaxin Cheng and Di Xiao. Mr Keith Morrow, Head Master of Hallfield School said: “This building, being one of the first projects to be completed at the start of our five-year strategy, demonstrates the commitment Hallfield School is making to develop and enhance musical opportunities for all of the pupils at Hallfield. Through the appointments of our inspirational Director of Music, Mr Pip Jopling and our Music Teacher, Mrs Rosie Edgar, and our large staff of dedicated instrument teachers, we are at the beginning of a journey at Hallfield to ensure our children develop a love of music and the skills and talents to reach their potential as musicians.” Mr Pip Jopling, Director of Music, said: “I believe that all children should be seen as musicians: Afterall, it is now well accepted that involvement with music-making helps children with their coordination, it helps brain development and develops social skills and team-working skills. We, therefore, ensure that our department is an inclusive space and every child from the age of three receives a 40-minute lesson once a week. Every child has the opportunity to be a part of a musical ensemble from the age of five and every child has the opportunity to learn to play an orchestral instrument from the age of seven.” For more information on Hallfield’s music provision, you are invited to attend the Whole School Open Morning on Saturday 8th February. IS ANYTHING MORE ROMANTICISED THAN

LOVE?

Do you know what the biggest threat to relationships is in 2020? Unmet expectations. Love has been commoditised, packaged and sold as unrealistic picture-perfect movie moments. The modern enemy of love is people throwing away good loving relationships in search of something that isn’t real. Determined to find the cinematic love experience. The instagram filter of romance that air brushes out the struggles and conflict. And it’s no wonder. Because next to that, a happy relationship with balance, mutual respect and its fair share of arguments hardly seems as exotic. But for the sake of our sanity, we must remove the rose-tinted glasses through which we view the idea of love, and fall for the reality of love. There will be pressures that test your resolve… Society expects you to find your soul mate and be married by 30, and for women there are very real pressures connected to that, with our biological clocks ticking. It takes a huge amount of courage to deviate from that expectation, but if you can, you can reclaim your narrative. Harry Potter actress, Emma Watson recently was asked in an interview with Vogue why she is single (at the ripe old age of 29!), and she responded that she’s very happy being single, calling it being ‘self-partnered’, which is an act of reclaiming her narrative. After all, the foundation of a great relationship begins with an understanding of yourself, so whether that is the end goal or not it seems like a healthier stepping stone towards happiness than jumping directly from one relationship to another. I suppose the unifying problem is expectation. Try not to let other peoples expectations weigh too heavily on what your love life should look like, at whatever age you are. And, hard as it may be, fight against the warped perceptions of romance online, and avoid applying unrealistic expectations to love. But obviously, if they’re awful, leave them! Happy Valentines! - Written by Ruby Prosser

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

2 cups basil leaves 1/2 cup parmesan 1/2 cup olive oil 1/3 cup pine nuts 3 garlic cloves minced 1/4 tsp salt 1 pinch black pepper

1. Place the basil leaves and pine nuts into the bowl of a food processor and whiz up several times. 2. Add the garlic and parmesan and blend. Scrape down the sides of the food processor with a rubber spatula.

3. While the food processor is running, slowly add the olive oil in a steady small stream. Adding the olive oil slowly, while the processor is running, will help it emulsify and help keep the olive oil from separating. Occasionally stop to scrape down the sides of the food processor. 4. Stir in salt and freshly ground black pepper, add more to taste. Toss with pasta for a quick sauce, dollop over baked potatoes, or spread onto crackers or toasted slices of bread.

FRESH PESTO Quick, easy and super impressive! Perfect for a mothers day treat.

AFTER 62 YEARS IN BUSINESS AHMED YUSUF HAS DECIDED TO HANG UP HIS TAPE MEASURE Arriving in Birmingham from Cyprus in 1954, he left behind a simple farming background. His dream aged 13 was to have his own tailoring business. Tempted by his cousin, the village tailor, into learning the trade rather than becoming a farmer, he continued his apprenticeship in Nicosia and decided at 17 to follow his brother to Birmingham to make his dream come true! Ahmet achieved his dream in 1958 opening his first workroom in a cellar in Bath Row, then in 1972 moved to Chad Square combining retail and bespoke tailoring. One of his greatest achievements was winning the ‘Tailor of the Year’ in 1976-77, taking the title away from Savile Row for the first time.

CAN YOU SPARE AN HOUR OR TWO A WEEK? Would you like to help children and young people in the Birmingham area? Children’s charity Mentor Link is recruiting Volunteer Mentors to support children and young people in schools. Owing to a current shortage of mentors in some parts of Birmingham, Mentor Link would like to hear from women and men interested in supporting children in schools for around an hour each week. You should be a good listener, patient and enjoy working with children and young people. The areas there is a particular need in are King’s Norton, Moseley, Northfield, Rubery, Longbridge, Blackheath, Harborne and Edgbaston and also in Halesowen. The Mentors are trained to support and encourage young people who are facing issues which are impacting on their education and well-being, with a view to improving their self-esteem and engagement in learning. The charity has an excellent track record of success in achieving positive outcomes with children and young people. The charity is hoping volunteer mentor Mark Warmington’s experience will inspire men to get involved. Mark joined the charity last year as a Mentor and has supported a number of students during that time. He has commented that: “Volunteering with Mentor Link gives me an opportunity to make a difference in a young person’s life. Each of my mentees know they can speak about anything that is important to them and truly be heard. This helps build their confidence and trust in adults that they won’t be judged, that their point of view is important and that they have an outlet to work through the challenges and pressures they are facing in life.” Mentor Link is a Safer Recruiter and requires two character references and an Enhanced DBS clearance. They will provide Induction training, travel expenses, on-going training, and a dedicated team of staff to support you in your role. If you can spare an hour or two a week, and you are able to commit to a minimum of 6 months volunteering please contact Elaine Southall on 07805 937347 or email Elaine.Southall@mentorlink.org.uk We welcome enquiries from schools, parents and organisations in the area who want to hear more about our services. LEGAL & FINANCIAL

Let’s Be Civil - Mixed-Sex Couples Now Have Right to Enter into Civil Partnerships

Under the terms of a civil partnership a couple is entitled to the same legal treatment in terms of tax, pensions, inheritance and next-of-kin arrangements as if they were married. There are an estimated 3.3 million unmarried couples currently living in England and Wales who could take advantage of the new arrangements and the government predicts that uptake could be as high as 84,000 in the first year, with numbers stabilising at around 30,000 a year by 2029. Civil partnerships for mixed-sex couples are now legal, meaning that mixed-sex couples now have the right to choose whether to marry or alternatively, enter into a civil partnership. Until recently, civil partnerships have been reserved for same-sex couples and they represented the only way for many people to formalise their relationship until the introduction of same-sex marriage in 2014.

40

One Couple’s Story Which Led to Legal Change In October 2014, Rebecca Steinfield and Charles Keidan tried to form a civil partnership at their local town hall, only to be told that because they were not of the same sex, this could not be done. They were advised that civil partnerships were only reserved for couples of the same sex. Following this, Rebecca and Charles launched a legal challenge in the form of a judicial review, which allows individuals to challenge the law. Their case was eventually heard in the Supreme Court in May 2018. The couple’s position was that they had “deep rooted and genuine ideological objections to marriage”.

Their barrister said matrimony was “historically heteronormative and patriarchal” and the couple’s objections were “not frivolous”. Following deliberation from the judges in the Supreme Court, they gave the unanimous ruling that the government’s refusal to allow mixed-sex couples to enter into civil partnerships was incompatible with human rights law. How Has the Law Changed? Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, the government pledged to allow mixed-sex couples in England and Wales to enter into civil partnerships, and legislation was passed in 2019 allowing for a change in the law. Secondary legislation was required before those provisions could become law,

MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, FEBRUARY / MARCH 2020

LEGAL & FINANCIAL

WWW.VWV.CO.UK but following recent approval from the House of Lords, the Secretary of State was required to issue the regulations allowing for mixed-sex civil partnerships by 31 December 2019.

Some couples, like Rebecca and Charles, feel that the institution of marriage isn’t compatible with their beliefs and ideologies. As such, being unable to enter into a civil partnership was viewed as discriminatory.

The same reforms will soon be extended to Scotland and Northern Ireland too.

Concerns that mixed-sex civil partnerships would undermine the institution of marriage have diminished and many people now see them as offering a route for cohabitants to secure their rights.

What Is the Basis for This Legal Change? Traditionally, principles of marriage are rooted within religion and would involve a religious ceremony. Civil ceremonies have become more popular. However, there are strict rules as to what constitutes a legally-binding marriage which can be restrictive on those wishing to get married outside of a typically religious building.

How Can We Help? If you are unsure how this legal change may affect you or you are concerned to determine what your legal rights are currently, or you wish to enter into a civil partnership, please contact Nigel Mears on 0121 227 3731.

QUIETUS

THE DEATH OF HER Brummie talent is blossoming in every corner of this beautiful city, and one of the best places to witness it budding is at Midlnds Arts Centre, who play host to exciting large scale productions as well as intimate, compelling art. Quietus: The Death of Her, was written and directed by homegrown talent, Nathalie Bazan, whose theatre company ‘Lying Lips Theatre’ performed the rousing piece in the MAC’s Hexagon Theatre. I want to be moved by art, and inspired by it, and I can honestly say I left the theatre with powerful affirmations ringing in my ears - I am not going to waste a moment of this incredible gift of life. The play held us in a capsule, inside a woman’s dying moment, and had echoes of Waiting For Godot in its existential crisis. It seemed as though we were experiencing the very last seconds of ‘Her’ life, drawn out and picked apart to understand every component of her thoughts, feelings and desires. But instead of taking us to a bleak place, we were lead blindly into humour, nostalgia, regret and a final, serene, clarity. I was bowled over by the level of talent this small production had, the ability to let me escape in its characters. Angus Villiers Stuart was lovable and charming as the breath of her, living in a perpetually tailcoat-clad servitude to ‘her’, and strolling around her final moments doing the kind of busywork that puts you at ease. ‘Her’ played by Shady Murphy with an earthy full-bodied voice gave gravitas to the lead and made us truly care before her last breath let out. I found the handling of such a grave subject very tastefully crafted, giving colourful meaning to both life and death. The audience were tickled by every hilarious twist, and I particularly enjoyed her momentary resurrection to put an arrogant ex-lover in his place! (Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, right?!) For a subject that so often leaves us feeling drained and depleted, Quietus: The Death of Her, filled the theatre with life and its relentless potential to be anything we choose to make it. I’m excited to see what Nathalie and Lying Lips Theatre come up with next! Follow Lying Lips Theatre on Facebook for details of future productions. - Written by Ruby Prosser

SHAGGY’S IN BRUM!

Shaggy is coming to Birmingham and he’s bringing the nostalgia of early 2000’s RnB with him, AKA Eve, Nelly, Salt N Peppa, Mya, Blu Cantrell, and Fat Man Scoop! 1. The Blast Off! Tour kicks off at the end of February next year – are you excited to be heading back on the road? Yeah! I’ve literally just got back off the road with UB40 in North America so this is a perfect time to be hitting the UK and Ireland! It’s a great line up also, and as soon as I looked at the line up I said, ‘yeah, I definitely wanna go!’ It’s a line up of great hits.

2. Nelly, Salt N Pepa, Blu Cantrell – are you excited to have some of the biggest names of the 90s & 00s joining you on the tour?

44

It’s going to be good vibes! I’ve done a couple of shows with Nelly on several occasions back when he was just coming out so we did the circuit together. Recently, I think the last shows we did together were in Canada, a couple of dates there. I just think with the amount of amazing records these guys have got, we’ve got Salt N Pepa, Blu Cantrell. I’m sure there will be a lot of guests coming in and out, it’s just going to be a really, really good night!

3. If you had to pick one other artist from the line up, who do you think will be the most fun to hit the road with? I mean, any one of them! I think Mya

will be cool in the sense that she’s been doing a lot of dancehall and reggae as of lately, even from before she’s done records with Beenie Man and people like that… but they’re all great!

4. You’ve not long completed a tour with Sting! How did that come about? I’ve known Sting for years! We have a mutual friend in common which is Martin Kierszenbaum, he was my A&R at Interscope and also Sting’s A&R at Interscope, and then Martin started managing Sting and then managed me and he just thought that we would work well together. We went into the studio to do one song and then we

MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, FEBRUARY / MARCH 2020

found it a little weird because they forgot how many hits we have between us and it’s the journey and soundtrack of people’s lives – and that’s what it’s all about. The smiles on people’s faces, that’s all that matters really.

6. Rather impressively, you’ve had 4 UK number one singles. How do you find playing the UK compares to elsewhere? Do you feel an affinity with the UK? I used to go over to the UK for years, it’s almost as if people thought I lived there! We’ve had a few number ones and a lot of Pop records over there, which started in 1992 with Oh Carolina, which was the first dancehall record that actually went into the British chart at number one, and then we were on Top of the Pops four times and it was the first time Dancehall really did that as well. Then we debuted at number one with Boombastic, and it was the first time for Reggae and Dancehall again. At that point, I started to circuit and get to know everyone over there so England and the whole of the UK was a big part of that time for me, and I have a lot of friends in the UK that I’ve known over the years because I feel like I’ve lived there.

7. Your music career has spanned close to three decades, what do you find is your biggest motivation to keep making music and keep performing? thought that we had a lot in common on many levels that turned into a friendship, which then developed into an album. We just couldn’t get enough of each other and the way we make music, and the laughs and the fun, we just said, “We’re gonna take this show on the road.”

5. Your joint album 44/876 was a massive success and also won you a Grammy - did you expect to receive such an amazing response to the album? We didn’t know what to do with that thing because Sting & Shaggy on paper looks really weird! That’s kind of what attracted us to it anyway, the fact that no one was really expecting it and everybody would be sitting there thinking, “What the fuck is it?” But one thing was undeniable, which we knew would be, that once you came to a show, you would leave entertained, and if you look at most of the write up and reviews of the shows throughout the whole tour, people were saying that they came even though they didn’t think they would like it and they

I just do music because I’m really not good at anything else! Honestly, you don’t want to see me kick a ball. Trust me, it aint pretty! I’ve a knack for writing great melodies and obviously we did the Sting album, we won a Grammy, three years before that we did ‘Need Your Love’ which was a Top 5 single in America, which made me happy. I’m still writing songs that have relevancy within Dancehall, and I write for other people also. It’s just a hobby for me, music for me is just like air after a while, and it’s just kind of what I do! I don’t have any aspirations to be any mogul or have riches – I just want to play music and be happy, that’s it.

8. Throughout your career, you’ve always given back to your hometown community in Jamaica and charity has always been close to your heart – how important do you think it is to give back? For me, coming from humble beginnings to now being at this level - I played for the Queen’s birthday the other day - when you’re sitting around and dining with kings

and queens, from a little kid that came from Jamaica, it’s humbling. After a while, you realise just how very fortunate you are and I don’t think that was given to me just so I could walk around drinking, partying, and banging chicks, it had to be something greater. I have to use this platform I have to bring people together to do something amazing. Starting up a hospital for children was what I chose to go behind because it was the only one in the English-speaking Caribbean and I realised for a hospital like that, it would mostly be children and they would be serving in a neighbourhood of about 400-500 people a day and those are huge numbers for such a small hospital. I had the ability to get sponsorship and pull people together and create these massive concerts, we made a lot of money for them. We were able to build their cardiac wing, and were very instrumental in the building of the CAT lab, and all the equipment. I was in Jamaica just two days ago where we turned over $100,000,000 to Jamaica. We continue doing stuff like that. I’m also a brand ambassador for Food For The Poor, which is the 5th largest charity in the US. I do a lot of work with Home Base, which is a charity for the military to combat invisible wounds. It’s good to be in that position where you can put your celebrity towards something like that. I also do work with Chain Of Hope who do cardiac operations for little babies in third world countries. After a while, especially where I’m at right now where I’ve done all the partying, it’s time to do something.

9. You have a military background yourself, is that something that has always stuck with you, especially when it comes to charity? I was in the first Gulf War so I know all about that. I don’t think you’re going to go through any war without having some sort of trauma, it just comes with it. I’m in a position where I can do a lot of work with the military, even as far as doing concerts for them and doing shows in Bosnia and Germany.

10. You’ve had number one albums, number one singles, toured the world… What would you say is your career highlight to date? There’s a lot! I think meeting James Brown and him being such a really big Shaggy fan was such an out-of-body experience. Also, the whole Sting project has certainly been a highlight of my life. Michael Jackson, and Michael just being such a fan and playing at the 30th Anniversary at Madison Square Garden.

46

Going diamond is also a massive highlight. It’s been a very amazing ride; it’s been pretty good and pretty colourful.

11. Last but not least, what else is in the works for you? Well, after the tour with UB40 in North America, I went straight off and did Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ LIVE for ABC, and now Sting & I have just shot the holiday special for Thanksgiving and Christmas, where we’ll be doing all Reggae and Dancehall for the opening… we’re doing Christmas Carols and Reggae! Sting & I might get back in the studio, as there’s a project we’re discussing, so we’ll see how that works… It’s going to be something off the wall, it seems so far fetched, people might not understand it but that’s how we like it! When you’ve been doing things so long, you just look for things that excite you. So, a couple of projects here and there and we’ll just see how it goes!

BOUTIQUE HOTEL STYLE EN-SUITE FROM ROMAN BATHROOMS

Simon and Liz were looking for a company to refurbish the family’s en-suite bathroom and were delighted when they found Roman Bathrooms. “My wife Liz and I did our initial research, and Roman Bathrooms stood out for their professional approach,” he says.

“Once we’d met the staff, they brought our vision to life and we knew it was the company to make it all happen.”

Their brief was to knock the existing dressing room and en-suite into one, to create a room with a ‘boutique hotel’ feel. It was to feel spacious but homely and had to contain a large walk-in shower, twin sinks and a large mirror.

PLACES OF

HOME & GARDEN

SACRED & BEAUTIFUL Since ancient times, sacred and beautiful sites have had a mysterious allure. A way of drawing us thousands of miles to bask in their majesty or revel in their enigmatic energy. And at some point, while I was daydreaming about my next vacation, (and how unlikely it is to happen in the interests of lowering my carbon footprint) I realised, home should have this beautiful affect on us. So, I have found a way to create a place of peace and power in my home, inspired by some of the most wonderful places and cultural celebrations in world. Here’s how you do it...

56

MOROCCAN FINE DINING

JAPANESE BLOSSOM FESTIVAL

They know how to create a dining experience in Morocco. There’s theatre in how the food arrives, there’s dark sultry lighting that feels ever so romantic, and there is such exquisite decor. Bring all this into your daily life, belly dance your way over the mosaic tiles and vivid rugs, cuddle up under the olive trees and Areca palms lit by the lanterns hanging low and high. Create the drama of traditional tall archways with large mirrors cut out in the elegant keyhole shape that is emblematic of Moroccan design. It’s an experience you can’t miss out on, but can create yourself!

Transport yourself to Japan filling your garden with blossom trees and enjoy your own little Cherry Blossom festival every year, eating, drinking and barbecuing beneath its fantastical foliage. Blossom trees are symbolic (in Japan) of the fleeting nature of life, in their brief and beautiful window of two weeks in bloom. Japanese gardens have a tranquility in their pristinely pruned and perfect bushes, and have a tremendous amount of character in their intentional lack of symmetry. Create a cobbled meandering pathway through the trees and have it lead to a destination.

ISLAND VIBES Nothing quite says energy and zest for life like Caribbean culture. That carefree feeling is intoxicating when you touch down in the islands‌ How do we harness the power? Vibrant colours! I know how tempting it is to follow the latest interior design rules and have all the contents of your home various shades of grey, and though unintentional, it mirrors the dreary weather outside. But introduce blue, orange, purple, colours whose effect on our brains encourage deep spiritual thought, excitement and energy, and you’ve got yourself a party in the living room. Have a look on Etsy for stunning art to bring your walls to life and see the difference it makes to bring the Caribbean vibe all the way home.

HOME & GARDEN

GARDENING TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS at Birmingham Botanical Gardens

As the daylight hours increase and the temperature starts to rise slowly, you can get on with making sure your garden is ready for spring – and you can also look ahead to what you plan to do later in the year. Doing a little bit, often, is the best way to make sure you keep on top of your horticultural chores, so if you have a spare 30 minutes or so, here are some tasks to do over February and March:

It might be early in the year, but there are hints that spring is well on its way – the snowdrops are already out and narcissi are also peeping from the ground, brightening up our gardens and parks with their delightful yellow tones. We’ve enjoyed being out in the garden, even in the rain, and it’s at this time of year when the legwork you did at the end of last autumn starts to pay off: your tools are already sharpened and cleaned, your scrubbed-up pots are ready to be filled, and the greenhouse is sparkling.

In February:

Prune winter-flowering shrubs when they have finished flowering. Prune wisteria back to about two or three buds. Clip ornamental grasses back to a few centimetres from the ground. Remove the faded flowers from winter pansies. Get a head start on the weeds, by removing them from the borders. If the soil is not frozen or waterlogged, you can reposition deciduous shrubs or trees.

In March:

Replenish the goodness in your soil by adding a general fertiliser, well-rotted manure or compost. Prune roses and give them a good feed. Deadhead hydrangeas. Remove the flowers from faded daffodils, but leave the foliage to die back naturally. Think about using nematodes if you want to keep slugs at bay. You might need to start mowing your lawn now – make sure the blades on your lawnmower are set higher than they are in the summer.
