REMEMBERING THOSE WHO MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE Knowle resident Alan Pollock tells us about his volunteer work at The National Memorial Arboretum
M
y name is Alan and since March 2017 I’ve been acting as a volunteer at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire DE13 7AR. So let me tell you a little about my role there, the Arboretum in general and what to see and do there and why I volunteer. My role is as a Front of House volunteer. A typical day could involve meeting and welcoming visitors as they arrive, or manning the information desk helping to assist visitors find particular memorials or names on the Armed Forces Memorial, perhaps leading a guided walk or giving a golf buggy tour, to presenting talks on Far East Prisoners Of War or the Shot At Dawn talk, but various roles exist, there are over 240 volunteers, with over 50 staff members. Other roles for volunteers include, learning, retail and catering and working weekends for those who enjoy
8
working outside, pruning, planting, ground maintenance. Volunteers range in age from 16 to 86, and full training is provided. There are many more talks and walks I’m in training to deliver, in fact we are always learning new and interesting facts about the Memorials, grounds, trees and wildlife, not only from our knowledgeable fellow volunteers and staff, but from visitors sharing their memories and stories with us. The Millennium Chapel is the only venue in the country where we observe 2 minutes silence every single day of the year. The National Memorial Arboretum is a woodland landscape with over 30,000 trees, over 300 memorials many with a special meaning or symbolism behind its design. There are 150 acres to explore, a dog friendly walking route, there’s a land train with recorded commentary which takes visitors around a major part of our grounds and there are wheelchairs and electric scooters available for hire for those with special access requirements. Opened in 2001, our founder Commander David Childs RN, in conversation with Group Captain Sir Leonard Cheshire RAF, feared that as a nation we were forgetting to remember those who had given their lives for this country since 1945, and from that conversation a germ of an idea was formed to establish here in the middle of the country, a national centre for remembrance combining an arboretum and memorials for both the armed services and civilian organisations. I’m often asked why I volunteer and I imagine that you would get much the same answer from most of us, it’s about respect, pay back, concurring with the thoughts of our founder. For me personally it’s my small way of respecting my uncle’s memory. Killed in WW2, he, like thousands upon thousands before and since in two world wars and armed conflicts, made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country, that fact alone to me means we should never forget them.

SHIRLEY LADIES CIRCLE RAISE OVER £11,600 FOR THE ROYAL STAR & GARTER HOME IN SOLIHULL

A community group has raised more than £11,600 for The Royal Star & Garter Home in Solihull after naming the care home its charity of the year.
CAN JEFF ALLAN BREAK ANOTHER GUINESS WORLD RECORD FOR ALZHIEMERS? CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF KNOWLE AND DORRIDGE TANGENTS On Saturday 18th May 100 local ladies from various tangents within the Midlands gathered to celebrate Knowle & Dorridge Tangents 50th Charter at West Midlands Golf Club, Barston. A drinks reception and lunch was followed by speeches from Jill Harris Past National President of NATC whose theme was “Together is Stronger”. We are part of a four club family comprising of Tangent, Ladies Circle, Round Table and 41 Club who all function locally, nationally and internationally. Anna Turney was the guest speaker who provided an engaging and inspirational talk as a Paralympian who shattered her spine aged 26 during a snowboarding training run in Japan when she was one of the UK’s leading snowboarders. Knowle & Dorridge Ladies Circle and 41 Club provided support throughout the day as well as 32 Past Knowle & Dorridge Tangent Chairmen each lighting a candle representing their year from 1969.
Dr. Jeff Allan is already a double Guinness World Record breaker. He will be at- tempting his third Guinness World Record this year for the ‘longest journey on a motorised bicycle’. Jeff will be setting out from Victoria Square in Birmingham and hopes to be travelling for around 90 days to beat the current record of 8209 kilometres. His journey will take him across Europe - south to Spain and north to Denmark. In Jeff’s book “Can you drive an Electric Car in Britain?” he wrote “If you want to save the planet, don’t buy a car, not even an electric car - walk instead. If you need to travel further, use a bicycle.” This is the main reason for attempting to break the world record - a determination to see how far you can travel on an electric bicycle. Jeff will be using a Riese and Muller New Charger electric bicycle fitted with two 500 watt hour batteries. This should give him a range of at least 120 miles on a single charge in eco mode. Jeff comments: “Every two years, I try to complete an electric vehicle Guinness World Record challenge and at the same time raise money for Alzheimer’s Society. My mother had from short term memory problems in the last years of her life and although it was never diagnosed as Alzheimer’s it is an illness that affects so many people and impacts hugely on friends and family.”
The Shirley Ladies Circle invited the Home Manager, Cheryl Harbourne and Lead Health Care Assistant Lee Mayo to a meeting to hand over a cheque. The Home, which cares for ex-Servicemen and women and their partners living with disability or dementia, was chosen as Shirley Ladies Circles’ charity for 2018-19 by chairperson Laura Rudge. The money was raised through several events, including the Shirley Beer and Cider Festival, which the Shirley Ladies Circle put on with Shirley Round Table, a Pudding and Prosecco evening and helping with the Santa sleigh collections in December. Laura has witnessed first-hand the award-winning care provided at The Royal Star & Garter Home. Three grandparents lived there, while another grandparent is a member of the Star & Garter Club day care service, which runs on weekdays from the Home. Laura said: “The care they give is really inspirational. They treat residents with dignity and respect, and support their families too. As a club we feel really proud to raise so much money.” Cheryl said: “We are so grateful to Shirley Ladies Circle for this money. Charitable donations help us continue providing activities, outings and care to our residents. It was a pleasure to attend their meeting and thank them in person for their wonderful efforts over the past 12 months.” Shirley Ladies Circle is an organisation for women aged between 18 and 45, who meet several times a month for social events, and also put back into the community by volunteering and fundraising for local causes.

When local writer Joanna Toye went to a small exhibition in Wolverhampton she had no idea it would one day inspire her to write a book. Jo was writing for BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Archers’ at the time and would go on to write scripts for ‘East Enders’ before settling down to write her novel, ‘A Store at War’. But what part did the exhibition play? ‘It was all about the Midland store group, Beatties,’ Jo, brought up in Solihull but now living in Harborne, explains. ‘From a small drapers in Wolverhampton in the 1870s, James Beattie and subsequent generations expanded the original shop into a flagship store in the city taking in total 22 properties in all. Buying a House? Your Tax Questions Answered
With the arrival of the spring, there typically comes a quickening of pace in the property market. Despite the ongoing effect of Brexit, we focus this month on a frequently asked question: what are the tax implications of buying property? We examine a typical scenario, where a couple wish to purchase a house together and are prepared to buy, as either sole or joint purchasers, if that will be beneficial from a tax perspective.
For example, if you purchase a property for £300,000, you will pay no SDLT. On the purchase of a property for £500,000, the SDLT would be £10,000 (usually £15,000).
What should you do if you find yourself in that situation?
There is also Multiple Dwellings Relief to consider. If the property contains more than one ‘dwelling’ (for example, an outbuilding that has been converted into separate living accommodation), you may be able to claim this form of relief and reduce the amount of SDLT you pay.
Can You Claim Any Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) Relief? You may be able to claim relief from SDLT and save up to £5,000 if each purchaser is a first time buyer. The relief is for first time buyers who are purchasing residential property in England or Northern Ireland* for £500,000 or less, as long as it is their only, or main, residence.

Does It Matter If We Have Owned or Still Own Other Properties? Generally speaking, First Time Buyers’ Relief will not be available if any of the purchasers own or have
previously owned a property at any point. If any of the purchasers own another property that they are not selling, it is likely that the purchase will be subject to the ‘higher rates’ of SDLT. We are often asked if it makes any difference if only one person is added to the property’s title. For these purposes, married couples and civil partners are deemed to be ‘one’. So if one person owns a property, the other person is deemed to also own that property. If you are not married or in a civil partnership, there are ways that you can structure the purchase to avoid paying the higher rates of SDLT or to benefit from First Time Buyers’ Relief. However, options are often ruled out when mortgage lending is involved.

Generally, if you sell your main or only home you don’t have to pay any Capital Gains Tax (CGT) as Private Residence Relief (PRR) provides 100% relief against any capital gain.
If you sell your home and effectively gift your share of the house to your spouse or civil partner for them to purchase the new home in their sole name, you should be aware that you are taking a risk. Indeed, in the UK, married couples and civil partners do not have any automatic right to each other’s assets. So, if your spouse or civil partner were to die without making a Will, or left a Will that did not benefit you, you could potentially lose all or part of your money.
Therefore if you sell your main residence before the new purchase this will allow you to benefit from 100% PRR. If you retain a property and purchase a new property that becomes your main residence, then PRR may be restricted on a future sale of the retained property, which could give rise to a CGT liability. … And Inheritance Tax? The good news is that inheritance tax is not charged between spouses or civil partners, as long as they are both UK domiciled for tax purposes.

HAVE YOU SIGNED AWAY ALL RIGHTS TO SAFETY? Organisers of potentially dangerous activities often require participants to sign a waiver but if you become injured you may still have a claim according to Catherine Owen, personal injury solicitor at The Wilkes Partnership.
If you’ve ever been to a trampoline park, horse riding, go karting, water sports or climbing, the chances are you were asked to sign a waiver before participating in the activity. And if you had the misfortune to sustain an injury during the activity you may think that you have no right to a claim against the organisers, because you signed the waiver. However, as Catherine Owen says: “According to the Unfair Contract Terms Act you can shield an organisation from liability, but you can’t exclude or restrict liability to injury or death if it can be proved the organisation was negligent. “There are many instances whereby you may be eligible to make a personal injury claim. For example, if you took part in a triathlon and became sick due to bacteria in the open water swimming activity then the waiver may not be valid as the participant could not foresee this would happen and the organisers should have ensured the
facility was safe for the event. Or, if you have not had a proper induction in a gym and you hurt yourself on the equipment then you might have a valid claim. “If you’ve had an injury falling off a horse there are any number of reasons for you to have a legitimate claim despite signing a waiver. You might be an inexperienced rider given a horse that’s not suitable for new riders. Your instructor may not be qualified enough or you may have been asked to do something beyond your ability. There could also be an issue with the equipment provided, such as faulty riding hat or saddle.” There are a number of things you can claim for, including pain and suffering, loss of amenity, loss of ability to live a normal life, loss of earnings, cost of medical treatment or ongoing care and assistance.

They have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame amongst many other accolades. Jurassic 5’s Soup will also take to the main stage with his new project, The Fullee Love Collective. This gold-selling artist now performs with his own full band. Along with performing Jurassic 5’s favourite hit tracks he’s also bringing his own edgier original soulfunk hip-hop sound. Combining 8 horns with 2 percussionists, scratch DJ and live MC, Renegade Brass Band mix funk, hip-hop and jazz with a raw brass sound and high-energy
live show. Having supported past Mostly Jazz Funk & Soul artists on their tours including Grandmaster Flash, Public Enemy and Craig Charles, they are a perfect addition to the line-up for 2019. Also appearing on the Friday are high-energy 9-piece brass ensemble Young Pilgrims, Boca 45 with a blistering live funky hip-hop DJ Set, jazz/ soul vocalist Alice Auer and one of Birmingham’s most talented young acts Odd Soul.
SATURDAY 13TH JULY The Brand New Heavies describe their music as “a unique mix of Jazz, Funk and Soul”, making these pioneers of Acid Jazz arguably the perfect people to headline the Mostly Jazz Funk & Soul stage. Making a return as Saturday’s co-curator and performing his ever popular headline DJ set is Craig Charles. Craig has garnered global recognition as one of the UK’s foremost Funk and Soul DJ’s after 10 years of broadcasting on BBC 6 Music. His 2018 choice for Album Of The Year was ‘Free Me’ by JP Bimeni & The Black Belts who join him on the line-up. Having been likened to artists such as Otis Redding and Leon Bridges, Burundian-born royal family descendent JP Bimeni is sure to be one to watch at the festival. Sharing their Tenth Anniversary with the festival, northern soul and funk outfit Smoove & Turrell will return to the Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul stage. Providing even more Northern Soul and funk with a touch of swing and ska is 6-piece live band, Daytoner. Spreading the word of Guerilla Soul since 2011, James & Black have performed alongside acts such as Sister Sledge (Mostly Jazz Funk & Soul 2018 headliners), Fatoumata Diawara, Jools Holland and more. He’s received three Academy Awards, eight Grammys and an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. ‘I Say A Little Prayer’, ‘I’ll Never Fall In Love Again’, ‘Walk On By’ and ‘What The World Needs Now Is Love’ are just a few of the 48 Top 10 hits and 9 #1 songs under his belt that have been written for or covered by some of music’s greatest legends; Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Tom Jones, Etta James and Luther Vandross are just a few of the long list of artists he’s worked with. Under the changes, on weekdays and Saturdays, services after 7pm between Birmingham and Dorridge are being doubled in frequency to run every half hour.

Mr Street said that capacity on the line would also benefit from ambitious plans to develop Moor Street station. “Services commuters will also benefit from the redevelopment of Moor Street station. The plans to improve the station will increase capacity and provide a direct link to the new HS2 station being built at Curzon Street – but the beautiful, historic nature of Moor Street station will be retained in the redesign. “I have had quite a few comments from commuters and residents concerned about how this important building is going to be approached, and I want to put their minds at rest.”

Take the strain out of packing
this summer...
Many of us over pack for our holidays as a result of not knowing what to take, it can be quite a stressful time especially if you are packing for the family, so this month I thought I’d share some great ways to ease the pain of packing ensuring you have exactly what you need on holiday.
Colour pallet
Think about what you want to take about 2 weeks before. This allows plenty of time to replace repair or dry clean any items. My simple tips should help you on your way to packing like a professional.
Plan and count your outfits.
Edit your clothes Gather everything together that you would like to take. Sometimes this can look a lot but fear not we are about to start the whittling down process! Arm yourself with a small rail – I use one every time and it really helps to build colour pallets and pull outfits together.
Try everything on Once you have started creating your outfits, be sure to try them on – making sure they still fit and are in good condition (it might have been a while since you last wore some of them!)
Try to theme your outfits by colour, this will help with accessories and jewellery. As you hang your items on the rail you will start to see the colour stories building.
Daytime outfits for me consist of a good pair of denim shorts, cotton blouses / vests and a couple of easy wear dresses, a good hat and flat sandals. Evening outfits depending on where you are heading will generally be smarter. Dresses are great for holidays, they take up less space, generally travel well and can be easily dressed up or down. Take enough outfits for each day – plus two spare.
Limit your accessories If you have created a colour pallet accessorising is easy – take 2 pairs of flat sandals, one heel, a trainer and a clutch bag or two. Use a large straw bag as hand luggage, this doubles as a beach bag. Keep jewellery to a minimum include a statement necklace and earring. Pack a couple of scarves that
can double as headbands at the pool, and don’t forget your swimwear – 2 maximum.
Stream line your wash bag We always take way more than we need on when it comes to toiletries. Take travel sized bottles (decant from your regular sizes where possible) and buy the rest when you get there. Take one wash bag and one makeup bag keeping them in zip tight bags or plastic bags to avoid spillages.
Get packing Use a lightweight case saving your kilograms before you start. There are many different ways to pack, I personally favour rolling but packing cubes are a great way to get more into your cases whilst staying organised. Get your case packed and closed the day before you go… oh and don’t forget the factor 50! If you need helping with your packing this summer please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

GARDENING TIPS From head gardener Wayne Williams at Birmingham Botanical Gardens It’s not just the burst of colourful bedding plants that reminds us summer is almost here – the opening of The Butterfly House – the only one in Birmingham – is also a welcome indication that those lovely, warm days are here. It will be open daily until Sunday, September 1, and you’ll be able to see hundreds of tropical butterflies from as far as the Philippines, Central America and tropical parts of Africa. Each week 100 new pupae are placed in the emerging case- we attach them to bamboo canes with glue – so that there are always new butterflies to enjoy. We gardeners will be busy this month. Not only will we start to landscape our display of cacti and other succulents on the Terrace, we’ll be out in force to ensure all borders and display areas are filled with beautiful summer bedding. If you want to learn more about the Gardens, the horticultural team is leading guided tours. The next one is on Thursday, June 6, and it will focus on how we care for the herbaceous plants in our borders and our herb garden. It’s an hour long and starts at 3pm. Just come to Reception to meet your guide. We’ve no doubt that you’ll be making the most of the longer days to fill your garden with summer colour – from pots full of geraniums to borders bursting with bedding plants. There will be lots to Do this month to keep on top of things. Here are just some tasks you should do:
• Mow the lawn at least once a week • Plant out your summer bedding now that the threat of frost is over • Hoe borders regularly to keep the weeds at bay • Prune deciduous magnolias if they are in full leaf • Start thinking about sowing your winter bedding plants, such as ornamental kale and winter pansies • Add shading to your greenhouse to prevent soaring temperatures and open windows to increase ventilation.

But old driftwood is an example of death becoming something lovely that still possesess echoes of life.
Chooseing earthy tones for your living spaces is sure to bring your mind and body tranquility. The psycological effect of certain colours, such as pinks, reds and purples are to stimulate and excite, whereas what we usually need from our home is the calming, quiet effects of browns (and greens). It’s worth a thought!

Potatoes
INGREDIENTS 4 cloves garlic 3 medium potatoes 2 tbsp spring onion 2 tbsp fresh ginger 1/3 cup honey 1/4 cup of a good soy sauce 3 tbsp light sesame oil 2 tbsp sesame seeds 1 tbsp chilli flakes (optional)
METHOD 1. Peel the potatoes and cut into small squares, wash well and put into baking tray. 2. Pour over the sesame oil and shake well, place into oven. Stir every five minutes to stop them sticking to the tray. 3. Finely chop the ginger, garlic and spring onion and combine them with the honey, soy sauce and chilli flakes. 4. When the potatoes are nice and golden, take them out and pour the glaze over and return them to the oven for a further 5 - 10 minutes. 5 Remove from the oven and pour into a serving dish, sprinkle sesame seeds and serve. If you allow it to cool for a few minutes, it goes excellent in a salad, with the excess glaze providing a tasty salad dressing.
