WORD ON THE

STREET CAN JEFF ALLAN BREAK ANOTHER GUINESS WORLD RECORD FOR ALZHIEMERS?

GETTING INVOLVED WITH MOSELEY SOCIETY Ray Tier was helping the History Group with their entry to the website when he joined the Moseley Society. He now edits the whole website; he is an active member of the Committee and can be seen leading walks during the Moseley Festival. He has done ghost and pub walks and will be at the festival this year on 6th July. Other members help out with the Dovecote garden or show people round there or the Ice House on Open Days. There is always plenty to do if you want to become more involved, but you don’t have to. Moseley Society values its members enormously. A membership organisation can be a real asset in Moseley – when the Boundary Commission wanted to divide us up it was Moseley Society members who responded and made them change their minds.

If you care about what happens in Moseley, you can join in at: moseley-society.org.uk

Dr. Jeff Allan is already a double Guinness World Record breaker. He will be attempting his third Guinness World Record next year for the ‘longest journey on a motorised bicycle’. Jeff will be setting out from Victoria Square in Birmingham and hopes to be travelling for around 90 days to beat the current record of 8209 kilometres. His journey will take him across Europe - south to Spain and north to Denmark. In Jeff’s book “Can you drive an Electric Car in Britain?” he wrote “If you want to save the planet, don’t buy a car, not even an electric car - walk instead. If you need to travel further, use a bicycle.” This is the main reason for attempting to break the world record - a determination to see how far you can travel on an electric bicycle. Jeff will be using a Riese and Muller New Charger electric bicycle fitted with two 500 watt hour batteries. This should give him a range of at least 120 miles on a single charge in eco mode. Jeff comments: “Every two years, I try to complete an electric vehicle Guinness World Record challenge and at the same time raise money for Alzheimer’s Society. My mother had short term memory problems in the last years of her life and although it was never diagnosed as Alzheimer’s it is an illness that affects so many people and impacts hugely on friends and family.”

BRINGING SCANDINAVIAN STYLE TO MOSELEY KIN is relatively new on the scene, but since the independent home and lifestyle boutique’s launch last year, it has become the ultimate destination for those seeking slick, Scandi style, hard-to-find lifestyle brands and a calm and personal shopping experience. KIN’s founders, Lewis and Neil, have an innate ability to spot trends and translate them into a beautifully curated collection, which will be displayed lovingly at their airy store in the heart of Moseley village. You’ll find brands like Studio Arhoj, whose ceramic ghosts have developed something of a cult status, along with practical and cute stationery, glassware and hand-designed cards. KIN also boasts a large collection of HAY and Ferm Living products, some lines are exclusive to KIN in the city. If handing over your money to huge, faceless corporations isn’t your bag, you won’t regret a visit to KIN in leafy Moseley – it truly is a real antidote to the high-street.

KIN opened at 10 St Mary’s Row, Moseley, B13 8JG in May

Jeff will be setting off in April 2020. You can donate to Alzheimer’s Society for this challenge at: justgiving.- com/Jeff-Allan-ebike

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY <<<< FORGET ME NOT DISPLAYS POP UP AROUND THE CITY IN HOSPICE’S 40TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR Throughout April and May, you may have spotted six ‘pop-up’ displays of wrought iron forget-me-not flowers to locations throughout the city celebrating the 40th anniversary year of Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice. These Forget Me Not display will be blooming across the city this spring, to celebrate the lives of loved ones. Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice’s Forget Me Not appeal is a unique way to remember and celebrate the lives of those who are no longer with us, by dedicating a stunning wrought-iron flower in their memory.

CHILDREN’S CHARITY SEEKING MENTORS Could you spare an hour or two a week? Would you like to help children and young people in the Birmingham area? Children’s charity Mentor Link is recruiting Volunteer Mentors to support children and young people in schools. Owing to a current shortage of mentors in the south of Birmingham, Mentor Link would like to hear from women and men who would like to support children in schools for around an hour each week. Anyone interested should be a good listener, patient and enjoy working with children and young people. The Mentors are trained to support and encourage young people who are facing issues which are impacting on their education and well-being, with a view to improving their self- esteem and engagement in learning. The charity has an excellent track record of success in achieving positive outcomes with children and young people. The charity is hoping volunteer mentor Mark Warmington’s experience will inspire men in to get involved. Mark joined the charity last year as a Mentor and has supported a number of students during that time. He has commented that:

“Volunteering with Mentor Link gives me an opportunity to make a difference in a young person’s life. Each of my mentees know they can speak about anything that is important to them and truly be heard. This helps build their confidence and trust in adults that they won’t be judged, that their point of view is important and that they have an outlet to work through the challenges and pressures they are facing in life.” Mentor Link is a Safer Recruiter and requires two 2 character references and an Enhanced DBS clearance. They will provide Induction training, travelling expenses, on-going training, and a dedicated team of staff to support you in your role. If you can spare an hour or two a week, and you are able to commit to a minimum of 6 months volunteering please contact Elaine Southall on 0805 937347 or email Elaine.Southall@mentorlink.org.uk Mentor Link welcome enquiries from schools, parents and organisations in the area who want to hear more about their services. For further information see their website mentorlink.org.uk

This year, the Hospice’s iconic blooms toured Birmingham, to commemorate the charity’s milestone anniversary, and to follow the routes nurses travel around the city providing care in people’s homes and in their communities. As well as the pink creations, people will also be able to buy limited edition, 40th anniversary copper flowers online, which comes with a piece of parchment so people can write a lasting message to their special someone and store it safely within the flower. Lucy Watkins, head of fundraising at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, said: “For the first time ever, we’re delighted to bring our annual Forget Me Not appeal into the heart of the communities where we provide our care and support every day. “2019 is an extra special year for the Hospice, as it marks 40 years since we opened our doors and cared for our first patient on Monday 5 March 1979. To celebrate four decades of care, we have two striking flowers for people to purchase, which will create a beautiful lasting tribute to their loved ones.” All funds raised from the Forget Me Not appeal will enable to the Hospice to continue to care for local people and their loved ones who are living with life-limiting illness. The Hospice’s Pearce Pink flower costs £25 and the special edition copper flower costs £40. Flowers can be purchased online, at: birminghamstmaryshospice.org.uk

MOSTLY JAZZ, FUNK & SOUL FESTIVAL... FRIDAY 12TH – SUNDAY 14TH JULY 2019 MOSELEY PARK, MOSELEY, BIRMINGHAM

FRIDAY 12TH JULY

ABOUT MOSTLY JAZZ, FUNK & SOUL FESTIVAL Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul Festival is set in the truly beautiful and unique setting of Moseley Park, Birmingham. Every year, the park plays host to a weekend of blistering live music, attracting people from all over the world who gather to see International legends alongside the latest contemporary breakthrough artists from the world of Jazz, Funk & Soul. This is a special year for the organisers as they gear up to celebrate the festival’s Tenth Anniversary in 2019. The team are promising their biggest programme of entertainment yet, having opened the new ‘Off Piste’ area of the park in 2018. The programme for Off Piste and the festival as a whole is set to expand in 2019 to encompass even more music plus Dance Sessions, Artist Q&A’s, Music Workshops and more, ready to celebrate Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul’s Tenth Anniversary.

12

Having celebrated 50 years as one of the most successful groups in music history, The Jacksons headline the Friday night of Mostly Jazz Funk & Soul. Initially finding international success with the Motown label, their recordings, including ‘I Want You Back’, ‘ABC’ and ‘I’ll Be There’, have sold in excess of 200 million. They have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame amongst many other accolades. Expect a funky Friday night filled with classics from their extensive back catalogue of hits. Filling the headline support slot is Ibibio Sound Machine, fronted by Nigerian singer, Eno Williams. Ibibio is a clash of African and electronic elements inspired in equal measure by the golden era of West-African funk and disco and modern post-punk and electro. As of Monday 28th January, they have been playlisted to 6 Music’s A-List with new single “Tell Me”. Jurassic 5’s Soup will also take to the main stage with his new project, The Fullee Love Collective. This gold-selling artist now performs with his own full band. Along with performing Jurassic 5’s favourite hit tracks he’s also bringing his own edgier original soulfunk hip-hop sound. Combining 8 horns with 2 percussionists, scratch DJ and live MC, Renegade Brass Band mix funk, hip-hop and jazz with a raw brass sound and high-energy

live show. Having supported past Mostly Jazz Funk & Soul artists on their tours including Grandmaster Flash, Public Enemy and Craig Charles, they are a perfect addition to the line-up for 2019. Also appearing on the Friday are high-energy 9-piece brass ensemble Young Pilgrims, Boca 45 with a blistering live funky hip-hop DJ Set, jazz/ soul vocalist Alice Auer and one of Birmingham’s most talented young acts Odd Soul.

SATURDAY 13TH JULY The Brand New Heavies describe their music as “a unique mix of Jazz, Funk and Soul”, making these pioneers of Acid Jazz arguably the perfect people to headline the Mostly Jazz Funk & Soul stage. Tracks such as ‘You’ve Got A Friend’, ‘You Are The Universe’ and ‘Never Stop’ have resulted in 16 top 40 singles and over 2 million album sales. Brian Jackson wrote, arranged and produced over 10 albums across an eightyear period as half of a power duo with Gil Scott-Heron. 40 years later, Brian continues to create with artists such as M1 (Dead Prez), Gregory Porter, Scott Tixier (jazz violinist with Stevie Wonder) and many more. He’s a true jazz legend and a welcome addition to the line-up.

MY MOSELEY & KINGS HEATH, JUNE / JULY 2019

Making a return as Saturday’s co-curator and performing his ever popular headline DJ set is Craig Charles. Craig has garnered global recognition as one of the UK’s foremost Funk and Soul DJ’s after 10 years of broadcasting on BBC 6 Music. His 2018 choice for Album Of The Year was ‘Free Me’ by JP Bimeni & The Black Belts who join him on the line-up. Having been likened to artists such as Otis Redding and Leon Bridges, Burundian-born royal family descendent JP Bimeni is sure to be one to watch at the festival. Sharing their Tenth Anniversary with the festival, northern soul and funk outfit Smoove & Turrell will return to the Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul stage. Providing even more Northern Soul and funk with a touch of swing and ska is 6-piece live band, Daytoner. Spreading the word of Guerilla Soul since 2011, James & Black have performed alongside acts such as Sister Sledge (Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul 2018 headliners), Fatoumata Diawara, Jools Holland and more. Joining them on the Saturday line-up are Moseley’s own 9-piece soul band The Atlantic Players, much-loved Birmingham DJ Sam Redmore, expansive soul-fusion band Necktr and soulful singer-songwriter Nick Corbin.

SUNDAY 14TH JULY One of the world’s most acclaimed and award-winning composers/ songwriters, Burt Bacharach, will be bringing the celebrations to a close on Sunday 14th July. He’s received three Academy Awards, eight Grammys and an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. ‘I Say A Little Prayer’, ‘I’ll Never Fall In Love Again’, ‘Walk On By’ and ‘What The World Needs Now Is Love’ are just a few of the 48 Top 10 hits and 9 #1 songs under his belt that have been written for or covered by some of music’s greatest legends; Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Tom Jones, Etta James and Luther Vandross are just a few of the long list of artists he’s worked with. Khruangbin’s journey began when they were invited to support Bonobo on his 2010 American tour. Their debut album, released in 2015, was met with widespread critical acclaim from the likes of Zane Lowe, Cerys Matthews and Don Letts. Don also picked their latest album ‘Con Todo El Mundo’ as his album of the year, which resulted in them claiming the overall #2 slot on BBC 6 Music’s Top 10 Albums of 2018. There is nothing else out there quite like them and audiences are in for a treat when they perform their headline support slot at the festival.

After honing his craft as a vocalist, guitarist and composer with countless acts, Gil Scott-Heron influenced Oscar Jerome is now becoming a major draw as a solo act. Another new act making waves, Ishmael Ensemble have quickly caught the attention of tastemakers such as Giles Peterson and Tom Ravenscroft with their fusion of psych-out Jazz and evocative ambience. Representing the jazz connection between London and Paris is jazz quartet Neue Grafik Ensemble, who perform at the festival alongside Notebenders Big Community Band, the brainchild of late legendary saxophonist Andy Hamilton MBE, and Giles Peterson’s Worldwide FM’s Tina Edwards playing a DJ Set. The line-up also features Birmingham based electronic soul band, Delta Autumn, who will perform their new project “Multiplayer Mode” featuring special guests. Also heading to Moseley Park for performances on the Sunday are energetic samba/reggae/afro-beat 8-piece Ponyland, jazz and soul keyboardist Ashley Allen’s Quintet, high octane Forj with their expansive improvisation and the return of the much-loved Jazzlines Ensemble providing a platform for young up-and-coming jazz musicians from in and around Birmingham.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

10 benefits of a meat-free diet 1. Cuts down green house gases Livestock contributes nearly 15 percent of the world’s human-caused green house gases - that’s a higher percentage than driving cars. 2. Helps preserve land resources Raising animals for food also means growing feed crops for them, which according to Mercy For Animals covers up to 30 percent of the earths land mass.

6. Mood Organically grown produce provides our bodies with everything they need to be functioning properly both psycologically and physically. 7. Lean figure Generally speaking vegetarian meals contain less calories and make our bodies work harder to break them down.

3. Reduce groundwater pollution Large scale animal farms create tons of waste that can leach into the soil and pollute groundwater.

8. Fighting disease / less toxicity When done right, vegetarian diets are naturally low in saturated fats, and cholesterol. Also, livestock is pumped full of antibotics to keep them from getting sick, making medicine less effective for those eating them. Food-borne illnesses are also far more common in meat.

4. Less cruelty to animals Factory farming is still how most of our meat is raised including cows, pigs, chickens and turkeys.

9. Sight & Skin Less mascular degenration means extra collagen for better skin and sight.

5. Less deforestation Forests are disappearing at an alarming rate, making way for livestock and the masses of food they require.

10. Stay fuller longer The extra fibre and nutrient density means you can eat less and stay full for longer.

Perhaps the biggest shock of the year (even bigger than the new Primark that’s opened up in town – and I can assure you, that’s big) is the fact that wow, it’s summer already. I know! Whether or not the weather actually reflects this, it’s still summer. We’re half way into 2019. Which means hi there summer solstice, welcome to the West Midlands. We’ve been eagerly awaiting you. In physics terms, the summer solstice is when the sun is at its highest position in the sky, leaving us with the longest day of the year. It also means that the North pole will have been immersed in solid sunlight for three entire months (since the spring equinox), so Santa better be applying his factor 50 and enjoying his holiday whilst he still can – because Christmas will be here again before he knows it. But more importantly, in Brummie terms, the summer solstice means woo, festival season! It’s not just Father Christmas on vacation this time, because here in the Midlands we have ample opportunity to stick on a pair of sparkly shorts and celebrate the arrival (and hopefully the lasting presence) of summer. And there’s no better way to celebrate than by doing what we do best: combining all of the brilliant cultures we are home to – all of the exceptional talents and traditions and tremendous people – and showcasing to the world that we sure know how to festival. Birmingham is overflowing with festival fun; with the Terry & Gerry’s Garden Party at The Blue Piano on the 22nd of June. This one is for those of you who love a rock and pop kind of summer (and there’s a barbecue! I know. Just when you thought it couldn’t possibly get any better). Hitting the last week of June (29th to 30th), there’s the Rum festival at the Cuban Embassy, where you can enjoy live music, street food and the guest of honour, rum! Could you possibly want for more? Well you should, because there’s plenty of it. There’s literally a festival for everybody. The Latin American festival at the Arcadian (July 7th), the Foodies Festival at Cannon Hills Park (June 21st to 23rd), the Festival of Audacity (July 18th to 20th) and even a Yarn festival (July 13th to 14th), for those of you who are fully aware that no summer is complete without a yarn session or four. But if none of those are quite your thing – or if they’re all your thing and you’re simply scouting for even more – then you won’t be disappointed. There’s a whole heap of things to get involved in around Birmingham over the next few months. The June solstice is our unofficial start to summer – but who needs an official start-date for it, anyway? Summer begins the moment you fish out your old flip flops and fill up the ice-cube tray. Summer begins the moment you say it does, because that’s the moment your heart beams brighter than the sun ever could (which really isn’t difficult here in England. The sun is like a distant rich aunt. Not always around, but when she is, you know the party has officially arrived).

Take the strain out of packing

this summer...

Many of us over pack for our holidays as a result of not knowing what to take, it can be quite a stressful time especially if you are packing for the family, so this month I thought I’d share some great ways to ease the pain of packing ensuring you have exactly what you need on holiday. Think about what you want to take about 2 weeks before. This allows plenty of time to replace repair or dry clean any items. My simple tips should help you on your way to packing like a professional.

20

Edit your clothes Gather everything together that you would like to take. Sometimes this can look a lot but fear not we are about to start the whittling down process! Arm yourself with a small rail – I use one every time and it really helps to build colour pallets and pull outfits together.

Try everything on Once you have started creating your outfits, be sure to try them on – making

sure they still fit and are in good condition (it might have been a while since you last wore some of them!)

Colour pallet Try to theme your outfits by colour, this will help with accessories and jewellery. As you hang your items on the rail you will start to see the colour stories building. >>

MY MOSELEY & KINGS HEATH, JUNE / JULY 2019

FASHION

Plan and count your outfits. Daytime outfits for me consist of a good pair of denim shorts, cotton blouses / vests and a couple of easy wear dresses, a good hat and flat sandals. Evening outfits depending on where you are heading will generally be smarter. Dresses are great for holidays, they take up less space, generally travel well and can be easily dressed up or down. Take enough outfits for each day – plus two spare.

Limit your accessories If you have created a colour pallet accessorising is easy – take 2 pairs of flat sandals, one heel, a trainer and a clutch bag or two. Use a large straw bag as hand luggage, this doubles as a beach bag. Keep jewellery to a minimum include a statement necklace and earring. Pack a couple of scarves that can double as headbands at the pool, and don’t forget your swimwear – 2 maximum.

Stream line your wash bag We always take way more than we need on when it comes to toiletries. Take travel sized bottles (decant from your regular sizes where possible) and buy the rest when you get there. Take one wash bag and one makeup bag keeping them in zip tight bags or plastic bags to avoid spillages.

Get packing Use a lightweight case saving your kilograms before you start. There are many different ways to pack, I personally favour rolling but packing cubes are a great way to get more into your cases whilst staying organised. Get your case packed and closed the day before you go… oh and don’t forget the factor 50! If you need helping with your packing this summer please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Oriental

Honey

Potatoes

INGREDIENTS 4 cloves garlic 3 medium potatoes 2 tbsp spring onion 2 tbsp fresh ginger 1/3 cup honey 1/4 cup of a good soy sauce 3 tbsp light sesame oil 2 tbsp sesame seeds 1 tbsp chilli flakes (optional)

METHOD 1. Peel the potatoes and cut into small squares, wash well and put into baking tray. 2. Pour over the sesame oil and shake well, place into oven. Stir every five minutes to stop them sticking to the tray. 3. Finely chop the ginger, garlic and spring onion and combine them with the honey, soy sauce and chilli flakes. 4. When the potatoes are nice and golden, take them out and pour the glaze over and return them to the oven for a further 5 - 10 minutes. 5 Remove from the oven and pour into a serving dish, sprinkle sesame seeds and serve. If you allow it to cool for a few minutes, it goes excellent in a salad, with the excess glaze providing a tasty salad dressing.

THIS ISSUE’S LOCAL READS Enjoy this issue’s round up of recent releases from local authors... IN PURSUIT OF THE DEAD ARTHUR HALL The ultra-secret government department known as Sector Three receives a top priority message from Klemperer, their agent-in-place in Tunisia. He is sheltering a high-ranking North Korean political official who wishes to defect to the UK, and an escort is required to see him safely to London. It is considered that the defector would be a valuable asset, having much to reveal about his country’s military capabilities. An agent, code-named Robert Lane, is sent to accompany him to Britain. Arriving at the designated hotel to await contact, Lane receives no word, but is put on his guard when he notices his resemblance to a fellow-guest who has suffered a fatal accident. This is the beginning of a series of attempts on Lane’s life. The motive is unknown to him as is the identity of his enemy, since he has never been in Tunisia before. Several times he narrowly escapes, until at last Klemperer makes contact. A rendezvous is arranged but Lane is increasingly wary, seeing his adversary in every shadow. He is up against a deadly enemy who is becoming increasingly desperate.

A STORE AT WAR JOANNA TOYE

When local writer Joanna Toye went to a small exhibition in Wolverhampton she had no idea it would one day inspire her to write a book. Jo was writing for BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Archers’ at the time and would go on to write scripts for ‘East Enders’ before settling down to write her novel, ‘A Store at War’. But what part did the exhibition play? ‘It was all about the Midland store group, Beatties,’ Jo, brought up in Solihull but now living in Harborne, explains. ‘From a small drapers in Wolverhampton in the 1870s, James Beattie and subsequent generations expanded the original shop into a flagship store in the city taking in total 22 properties in all. From that base they opened stores as far south as Aylesbury and as far north as Birkenhead, though the Midlands was always where Beatties was most loved.’ Paperback - £7.99 Also available as an e-book and audio book

Ian Buchanan, Tyndallwoods

CHECK YOUR LEASE LENGTH! If the length of the lease on your flat or house goes below 80 years you are in for a hefty bill to extend it that goes up every year. We spoke to Ian Buchanan at Tyndallwoods Solicitors to help us shed some light on the situation.

“Often owners of leasehold properties do not realise that they may struggle to sell unless they extend the lease,” said Ian Buchanan. Typically the length of a lease starts at 99 years. This means that if the lease has been running for more than 19 years then it will be increasingly more expensive to extend. Each year the cost of extending the lease goes up and the market value of the property goes down. And if the lease dips below 70 years then many lenders will not offer buyers a mortgage on the property. The cost to extend a lease is very little if it’s before the length reaches 80 years. All lease extensions add a further 90 years on to the length of the original lease.

“For example,” said Ian Buchanan, “a client of mine came to sell her flat with only 47 years left on the lease. Its market value was £150,000, but she had to pay £30,000 to extend the lease, otherwise she would not have been able to sell. If she had extended the lease before it went down to 80 years it would have cost in the region of £1,000. “For many people with elderly parents this could become an issue after their death leading to high unforeseen costs associated with sorting out their affairs.” A leasehold can be extended at any point after two years of ownership and if necessary can be done simultaneously with a sale and paid for with the

proceeds of the sale. From a conveyancing perspective leaseholds are much more complicated than freeholds and it is advisable to take advice from a qualified solicitor.

If you would like more information about lease extensions or the sale of leasehold properties please contact Ian Buchanan at Tyndallwoods Solicitors ibuchanan@tyndallwoods.co.uk

MY MOSELEY & KINGS HEATH, JUNE / JULY 2019

How can we help children develop healthy habits for life? Since Susannah Palmer started as Headmistress at Norfolk House School in September 2018, the whole community has worked hard to educate the children in healthy habits. Jacinta, the catering manager, has developed a new series of menus which incorporate plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Children are encouraged to try new food every day and fried food and dishes containing large amounts of sugar are only served occasionally. The children have embraced these changes and now enjoy fruits, such as pineapple, kiwi fruit and strawberries and vegetables, including carrots, broccoli and green beans, on a daily basis. In addition to providing the children with more opportunities to make healthy choices at meal times, the range of physical activities on offer has increased dramatically. From the minute the children arrive at school until they leave after their extra-curricular clubs, the children are encouraged to develop skills and keep active. A Wake and Shake session runs every day from 8.30am after the Walking Bus arrives. Play times are staggered so that the playground is less crowded. New playtime equipment, including Swingball, Badminton and tricycles, has been bought to encourage the children to be active at break time. The children regularly walk or run down the Harborne Walkway, a distance of 5 miles. In April, four members of staff took part in the Hagley Resolution 5K to help inspire the children develop a love of running and to encourage them to make sport a normal part of everyday life. Starting in May, teachers and pupils alike will be taking part in Parkrun at Cannon Hill Park. All the children are very excited at the prospect of competing against their teachers and are not at all daunted by the thought of running 5K first things in the morning. But running is not the only sport the children enjoy. Norfolk House School is delighted to be forging a new link with Edgbaston Priory Club. During the Summer Term, a coach from EPC will be leading weekly tennis lessons with our children from the age of 3 years. Older children will have the opportunity to play on the courts at EPC. Many of the children at the school already have lessons at EPC, but we want all our children to benefit from the specialist coaching the club has to offer.

Exciting times at Moseley Ashfield

M

oseley Ashfield is all set for a great summer of cricket - after investing in new facilities, the club is moving onwards and upwards. They’ve recruited new players and provided more opportunities for their growing youth section to experience senior cricket. For the first time in Moseley Ashfield’s 120-year history, they have a 4th XI team in the senior Warwickshire league, with under-15 and under-19 players regularly making up half this side and youth players also breaking into the first and second teams.

The first few weeks of the season has seen the first team unbeaten and successes elsewhere across the club. Just as important as the results is the development of our younger players. Moseley Ashfield is a a cricket club run by and for the people of Moseley and their ethos is centred around playing cricket in the right spirit and providing opportunities for everyone to achieve their potential. If you’d like to get involved, there are opportunities to play, watch or support by volunteering or sponsoring the club. For beginners, they offer the ECB All

Stars programme for ages five to eight on Thursday evenings, with the main youth training sessions on Fridays and senior training on Thursdays. Spectators are welcome - fixtures are on the website - https://moseleyashfield. play-cricket.com/, or you can follow on Twitter (@MoseleyAshfield) or Instagram (@MoseleyAshfield1900) for the latest updates.

Little Earthquake in partnership with MAC and the University of Birmingham presents

Tue 16 – Wed 24 July 2019 Rocket Fuel Fri 19 July | 8pm | £22.50 | Theatre | Ages 16+ Sat 20 July | 2.30pm | £22.50 adult / £12 child | Theatre Ages 7+ https://macbirmingham.co.uk/event/moon-fest-rocketfuel-dinner

Blast off to Brum for a once-in-a-lifetime festival that will let your imagination reach for the stars (while you keep your feet safely on the ground). 50 years after the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, MAC Associate Company Little Earthquake is joining forces with Midlands Arts Centre and the University of Birmingham to celebrate this special anniversary in spectacular style. MoonFest is a nine-day programme of Moon-inspired events, performances, screenings and activities created with artists, academics and audience members.

In space, no one can hear your tummy rumble. And on a trip lasting 102 hours, you’re bound to get a little bit peckish. Inspired by Neil Armstrong’s actual inflight menu, we’re teaming up with gastronomartist Kaye Winwood to create a delectable dining experience that is truly out of this world. Sample some unique tastes, scents and sensations based on the authentic dishes and drinks which powered Armstrong’s giant leap for mankind, and get a flavour of space travel from the comfort of your very own seat at the Commander’s table. Clayground Collective: Crater Formations Sat 20 - Sun 21 July | Free Out on MAC’s Terrace, two tonnes of grey clay will mysteriously appear overnight — ready and waiting to be shaped, patted and moulded by you! Clayground Collective invites you to roll up your sleeves, feel the soft squish of

the clay and use the limitless power of your imagination to sculpt an epic lunar landscape! Moon Museum Inspired by the miniature artwork smuggled onto the Moon during the Apollo 12 mission, we’re commissioning six brand new pieces which will be created through artist collaborations with community groups across the city. To Infinity And Beyond Dressed in fabulous 1960s fashions and armed with cutting-edge 1960s equipment (notepads and typewriters), a team of writers will be installed at MAC for one rotation of the Moon (namely, one day!) to produce brand new sci-fi short stories inspired by audiences’ visions of the future. These will be beamed far and wide in a special MoonFest podcast. In-Flight Movies We’ve handpicked a whole galaxy of shorts, documentaries and full-length features to keep astronauts of all ages entertained.

This is just a taster of MoonFest – see more at: little-earthquake.com/moonfest

PLANS TO REOPEN MOSELEY & KINGS HEATH RAILWAY STATIONS ARE ON TRACK, SAYS MAYOR West Midlands Mayor Andy Street believes proposals to reopen railway stations in Moseley and Kings Heath for the first time in decades are firmly on track, saying transport chiefs were now looking into the ‘fine detail’ of the ambitious plans. Under the proposals, there will be two trains an hour into the city centre, stopping at new stations on the old Camp Hill Line, at Moseley, Kings Heath and Hazelwell. The journey will take around 15 minutes - a welcome alternative to queuing on the A435 Alcester Road. “We are making really good progress with the new stations,” Mr Street said, “There is real momentum behind the idea now and an appetite to see the process through. “We have reached the point where we are now considering the finer detail of the plans – we’re looking at the timetabling of the new services, securing the slots into New Street station and working with Network Rail on all of the technical aspects.” Potential designs for the new stations were revealed in September last year, with the public being asked for their views. “We have now seen the potential designs for the stations, and there has been a public consultation on them,” Mr Street added. “The next step is to start thinking about formal planning applications, and about how the area around the stations will look, and how they could link up with local roads and bus services. “This is a very exciting development for people living in Moseley and Kings Heath, and a key part of my plans to get the region moving with better transport links, connecting residents and communities with jobs and opportunities.” The local stations were originally closed in 1941, as part of efforts to cut costs during the Second World War. Construction work could start in 2020 with the stations open by the end of 2021 - just in time for the Commonwealth Games. The plans are being jointly developed by the West Midlands Rail Executive, Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), West Midlands Railway and Network Rail. They are working together on the track, signalling and service changes required.

GREAT WAYS TO BRINGS THE OUTDOORS IN We are always hearing about how much more time we need to be spending outside, the current advice is around 4 hours a day. The effects nature has on us physically and mentally are so imperative to us leading happy, healthy lives, that this message cannot be said enough. But since we are going to continue spending many hours in our homes too, perhaps it’s time to invite the great outdoors in?

Written By Ruby Prosser

1. Fresh Air

2. Decaying Art

3. Earthy Accents

That wonderful freeing feeling of filling your lungs with fresh air is incomparable, but the next best thing has to be purifying the air in your home with these incredible potted plants (suggested by NASA): Spider Plant, Chinese Evergreen, Dwarf Date Palm, Flamingo Lily, Bamboo Palm. These are just some of the many options!

Life isn’t the only enchanting power nature has among its virtues, death and decay can be beautiful too. I’m not suggesting that the ‘presents’ your cat brings you deserve to be hung on your walls, that would be incredibly gross! But old driftwood is an example of death becoming something lovely that still possesess echoes of life.

Chooseing earthy tones for your living spaces is sure to bring your mind and body tranquility. The psycological effect of certain colours, such as pinks, reds and purples are to stimulate and excite, whereas what we usually need from our home is the calming, quiet effects of browns (and greens). It’s worth a thought!

GARDENING TIPS From head gardener Wayne Williams at Birmingham Botanical Gardens It’s not just the burst of colourful bedding plants that reminds us summer is almost here – the opening of The Butterfly House – the only one in Birmingham – is also a welcome indication that those lovely, warm days are here. It will be open daily until Sunday, September 1, and you’ll be able to see hundreds of tropical butterflies from as far as the Philippines, Central America and tropical parts of Africa. Each week 100 new pupae are placed in the emerging case- we attach them to bamboo canes with glue – so that there are always new butterflies to enjoy. We gardeners will be busy this month. Not only will we start to landscape our display of cacti and other succulents on the Terrace, we’ll be out in force to ensure all borders and display areas are filled with beautiful summer bedding. If you want to learn more about the Gardens, the horticultural team is leading guided tours. The next one is on Thursday, June 6, and it will focus on how we care for the herbaceous plants in our borders and our herb garden. It’s an hour long and starts at 3pm. Just come to Reception to meet your guide. We’ve no doubt that you’ll be making the most of the longer days to fill your garden with summer colour – from pots full of geraniums to borders bursting with bedding plants. There will be lots to Do this month to keep on top of things. Here are just some tasks you should do:

• Mow the lawn at least once a week • Plant out your summer bedding now that the threat of frost is over • Hoe borders regularly to keep the weeds at bay • Prune deciduous magnolias if they are in full leaf • Start thinking about sowing your winter bedding plants, such as ornamental kale and winter pansies • Add shading to your greenhouse to prevent soaring temperatures and open windows to increase ventilation.
