Some Like it Hot And some don’t! That’s why Sweet Chillies on Yardley Wood Road is a great place to go with the whole family. Their extensive menu caters perfectly for adventurous, experienced curry eaters as well as those who are completely new to the whole experience. Having been there a few times already I know exactly what to expect so it was the perfect choice for a family evening out with my two little boys and a great way to introduce them to curry, one of my favourite foods. Sweet Chillies is large and airy with plush leather seating including two rows of private booths, stylish, modern décor, ambient music and absolutely exquisite flower arrangements. Situated on the Yardley Wood Road near Haunch Lane it has its own car park and is licensed with a well stocked bar. We went along early one Monday evening and sat there with the sun streaming through the windows and it felt like we were on holiday. Our two boys are quite young, so

are a little unpredictable when eating out! But we were made to feel so welcome and comfortable that we immediately relaxed. While we studied the menu we were offered popadoms with home made relishes. They were devoured within minutes. The mango chutney went down particularly well with the smaller members of the group. The menu includes an array of authentic dishes as well as a range of imaginative fusion dishes, catering for all tastes. To drink we had a pint of Kobra and a glass of house white wine, and two mango and apple juices.

Chicken Korma was the ideal choice for our children accompanied by pilau rice and a baby naan. This was a first for them and they were most pleasantly surprised; the Korma they enjoyed, and the rice and naan they absolutely adored and ate every last grain and crumb. While they were getting stuck in to this new experience we quietly shared two absolutely mouthwatering, stunningly presented starters; Paneer Tikka, cubes of Indian cheese seasoned in medium spices and roasted in a clay oven and Chicken Shashlik, marinated, spiced chicken with onions, capsicum and tomatoes, cooked on a skewer in a tandoori oven. We too ate every last morsel and began to worry that we would be too full to finish our main course. The main course arrived, equally attractive presentation, and very generous portions. The Bengal Begun Massalla, a medium dish cooked with chicken tikka, fresh aubergine with green herbs and spices, and the Lamb Rogan Josh, cooked with cashew nuts, herbs and spices and topped with a layer of onions, capsicums and tomatoes. Both dishes were really well cooked and had just the right level of spice for each of us.

Just as the boys were beginning to get a bit restless, Iqbal the manager appeared with a tray of sweeties and choccies so calm was restored just long enough for us to finish our meal. Iqbal prides himself on the high quality ingredients used and the restaurantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s approach to healthy eating means that no artificial colours, stock or food additives are used and most of the spices are freshly ground in the kitchen. Woods, Wilderness and the Wild Men Middle-earth Weekend 2011 is on 21 and 22 May at Sarehole Mill Recreation Ground from 11.00am until 5.00pm each day. J.R.R. Tolkien’s love for the countryside and his fond memories of the years spent living near to Sarehole Mill is reflected in the theme for this years weekend which will be highlighting the trees, forests and creatures that inhabit ‘the wild places’ in Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’. This event is suitable for children and their families as well as other fans of Tolkien’s stories. It will be enjoyable, in fact, for anyone who appreciates a festival with an ‘old-fashioned’ feel about it. There will be plenty of hands-on activities, crafts and reenactments, plus music, dance, poetry and drama and of course the ever popular baby dragons together with the Wild Man of the Woods.

We welcome those who would like to attend in costume and there will be a costume competition for adults and children during the weekend. The event includes guided tours of the nearby Moseley Bog which has recently undergone a transformation with new wheelchair and pushchair access pathways. This year the organisers are running a photographic competition open to all ages on the theme of Trees and Leaves of Middleearth. The competition closes at the end of April when twelve prize entries will be chosen to reproduce in a calendar for 2012 and these photographs will be on display at the weekend. The Rules of entry are on the above website.

National Young Storyteller of the Year accolade awarded to Moseley local Moseley-based Polly Tisdall, walked away with title of Young Storyteller of the Year 2011 at the National Young Storyteller of the Year (YSOY) competition, which took place on Saturday 12th March in Birmingham. The contest, which has been running since 2004, gives young storytellers aged 15-25 the chance to tell tales of monsters, myths and mysteries in front of some of the most respected storytellers in the country. Polly, 21, said: “I’m so excited to have won this prize. I came across performance storytelling at the end of last year when I went to the Storytelling Café in Kings Heath. I really enjoyed it and wanted to find out more, so the organiser Graham Langley suggested that I book a place on a training course

and it clearly paid off! I’m looking forward to finding ways of incorporating storytelling into my theatre work and offering more storytelling opportunities to schoolchildren. It’s a great way to build confidence and develop public speaking and language abilities and I think it’s a worthwhile skill for children and adults alike to learn.” Graham Langley, ex drama teacher and champion of storytelling for adults, is the founder and Director of Young Storyteller of the Year, which is organised by Kings Heath-based Traditional Arts Team and was supported this year by Awards for All. HOME FROM HOSPITAL CARE – VOLUNTEERS WANTED Home from Hospital Care is charity offering support at home to people leaving hospital for 4 – 6 weeks after discharge – and volunteers are urgently needed. Can you volunteer to help support these people? If so, please ring 0121-472-4499 between 10 am and 4 pm Monday to Friday. Mileage and bus fares reimbursed. In the picture are Darshan and Thelma. Thelma went into hospital following a fall, this led to her being fearful of using public transport. Darshan took her to her local supermarket accompanied on buses until she built up her confidence and went with her to hospital. Home from Hospital care can assist with shopping, befriending, signposting to other agencies, lunch clubs etc. They can also offer advice on benefits, and provide general support following discharge from Hospital. This Charity, based in Selly Oak, has over 40 volunteers in South, North and East Birmingham.
