Moseley Festival : a child of the 70s and still going strong …..! Pam Rutter, a driving force behind the organisation of Moseley Festival looks back at its history. Anyone who has lived in Moseley for more than a year or two will know that its annual community Festival celebrates the vibrancy of our lovely, lively suburb and brings together thousands of local people. Did you know, though, that there has been a Moseley Festival almost every year since 1974? In those early years, the organisers called it the Moseley Arts Festival and it was centred at the St Martin’s Catholic Community Centre on the corner of Church Road (now the Hamza Mosque). In 1976 the word ‘Arts’ was dropped from the title and it achieved a wider reach into the community with events that included a Senior Citizens party and an Old Tyme Music Hall. In 1977 the records show it as a mostly churchbased festival, with lots of fund raising. Over the years since then, it has waxed and waned, partly due to the optimism or pessimism about the village centre, but mostly due to the fact that each new committee worked really hard for about three years and then ran out of steam. The present organising group has a different concept about this, but more of that later…. Reading through programmes and articles from the late 70s and 80s Pam has learnt that Beatles and Stones discos became a feature, as did the ‘Moseley Marathon’ (later, Moseley Fun Run), that drunkenness on the streets threatened the future of the Street Fair in 1981, and that competitions of all sorts played a part at various times : 5 a side football, a Town Crier contest, a Best Dressed Window competition for the shops, a parade of floats with prizes for the best 12

painting, chess, cricket, quiz, golf, a dog show…. You name it, Moseley had a competition for it. Let’s fast forward to the 21st century. The present organising group has been together since 2003 and shows no sign of flagging yet! Pam said: “We wanted to make Moseley Festival sustainable and we thought that the way to achieve that was for lots of venues, organisations and groups to ‘own’ most of the events of the Festival week and for the coordinating group to …. well, coordinate. “So we organise the famous Street Fair and one or two other events (notably the Art trail and the Moseley Mastermind quiz) and we concentrate on publicising the whole 10 days of events under the Festival umbrella. “Some years have seen a music festival in the Park, showcasing local bands, but the increasing costs of security and obeying health and safety rules have now ruled that out. This year the Moseley Festival programme is looking great, representing the energy, enthusiasm and talent of so many local people.”
Moseley Festival 2011 runs from Friday 8 July till Sunday 17 and includes such events as : Friday 8: Partners in Crime at O’Neill’s Saturday 9: Street Fair, Open Day with a brass band at Moseley Park, Magenta about Town Sunday 10: Moseley Mastermind Quiz Tuesday 12: Cheeky Monkey Comedy Club Edinburgh Preview at the Cross, Moseley’s Got Talent’ at the Prince of Wales Wednesday 13: Morris Dancing on the Green Friday 15: NotSoYoung (Neil Young Tribute Band) at Moseley All Services Club Saturday 16: St Mary’s Choir and Singers at St Mary’s Church Weekends of 9/10 and 16/17: Art Trail Plus many, many more events besides. Some Like it Hot And some don’t! That’s why Sweet Chillies on Yardley Wood Road is a great place to go with the whole family. Their extensive menu caters perfectly for adventurous, experienced curry eaters as well as those who are completely new to the whole experience. Having been there a few times already I know exactly what to expect so it was the perfect choice for a family evening out with my two little boys and a great way to introduce them to curry, one of my favourite foods. Sweet Chillies is large and airy with plush leather seating including two rows of private booths, stylish, modern décor, ambient music and absolutely exquisite flower arrangements. Situated on the Yardley Wood Road near Haunch Lane it has its own car park and is licensed with a well stocked bar. We went along early one Monday evening and sat there with the sun streaming through the windows and it felt like we were on holiday. Our two boys are quite young, so

are a little unpredictable when eating out! But we were made to feel so welcome and comfortable that we immediately relaxed. While we studied the menu we were offered popadoms with home made relishes. They were devoured within minutes. The mango chutney went down particularly well with the smaller members of the group. The menu includes an array of authentic dishes as well as a range of imaginative fusion dishes, catering for all tastes. To drink we had a pint of Kobra and a glass of house white wine, and two mango and apple juices.

Chicken Korma was the ideal choice for our children accompanied by pilau rice and a baby naan. This was a first for them and they were most pleasantly surprised; the Korma they enjoyed, and the rice and naan they absolutely adored and ate every last grain and crumb. While they were getting stuck in to this new experience we quietly shared two absolutely mouthwatering, stunningly presented starters; Paneer Tikka, cubes of Indian cheese seasoned in medium spices and roasted in a clay oven and Chicken Shashlik, marinated, spiced chicken with onions, capsicum and tomatoes, cooked on a skewer in a tandoori oven. We too ate every last morsel and began to worry that we would be too full to finish our main course. The main course arrived, equally attractive presentation, and very generous portions. The Bengal Begun Massalla, a medium dish cooked with chicken tikka, fresh aubergine with green herbs and spices, and the Lamb Rogan Josh, cooked with cashew nuts, herbs and spices and topped with a layer of onions, capsicums and tomatoes. Both dishes were really well cooked and had just the right level of spice for each of us.
Just as the boys were beginning to get a bit restless, Iqbal the manager appeared with a tray of sweeties and choccies so calm was restored just long enough for us to finish our meal. Iqbal prides himself on the high quality ingredients used and the restaurant’s approach to healthy eating means that no artificial colours, stock or food additives are used and most of the spices are freshly ground in the kitchen. The restaurant is located at 836 Yardley Wood Road, B13 0JE and is open from 5.30 – 11.00 every day. To book a table just call 443 2737 and if you take this article with you they will give you 15% discount off your food bill. (Offer subject to availability. Not valid in conjunction with any other offer or promotion. Discount available Sunday to Thursday. Discount available on eat-in only).

Sarehole Mill opens millpond to public With a £30,000 investment from Birmingham City Council Sarehole Mill has transformed the area around the millpond creating pathways and a viewing platform, making it a delightful place to walk around and see the mill from the pond-side. This has enabled people to make a very visible and real connection between the water and the mill – previously the only view of the pond was from a very small window on the first floor. The renovation has also provided much needed access to the first floor of the mill for wheelchair users and the less able. The mill is characterised by many narrow steep stairways, a delight for many, but impassable for some. Without having to go up any stairs people can now gain access to the first floor – arguably the most interesting floor with the mill-wheel and engine room.
This is the first step towards curator Irene de Boo’s long term vision of running Sarehole Mill as a working mill, grinding and selling organic stone-ground flour. The next phase to achieve this goal is to clean up the mill-pond which is becoming overgrown with reeds and is badly clogged up with silt. This is a huge undertaking which will cost an estimated £250,000, a figure that Irene is determined to raise through a package of funding during the coming years. Sarehole Mill is open Tuesday to Sunday from 12.00 – 4.00pm. Access to all outside areas and the café is free, and to go inside costs just £3 for adults or £2 concessions and under 16s are free.

Acapella band the Magnets perform at mac Friday 8 June at 8.00pm Hear well-loved songs as you’ve never heard them before, from Joy Division to the Scissor Sisters and Bon Jovi to Lady Gaga. Recently featured on the brilliant T Mobile flashmob advertisment –‘ Loads of people singing in an airport’ , viewed by over 5 million people on You Tube. This is your chance to see The Magnets perform their extraordinarily imaginative vocal arrangements in a unique concert in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. Literally a ‘six-man sound machine’, The Magnets make all their music with their mouths alone, including the drums of vocal percussionist/beatboxer Andy Frost and the richly textured bass of Fraser Collins. However, this is no attempt to mimic instruments,
but rather the blending of six distinctive voices to create a unique sound that rivals any band with guitars and keyboards. Tickets cost £18 (£15 concessions) and all proceeds go to Birmingham TCT Units. To buy tickets contact mac box office on 446 3232
Mostly Jazz The first weekend in July will see the second year for Mostly Jazz, which held its debut in 2010 in Moseley Park. This open air festival is exclusively dedicated to contemporary jazz, funk and soul, celebrating the dynamic grooves, innovation and excitement of the modern jazz movement. The organizers have been busy putting together a bigger and even better event than last year. For starters they’ve added an extra day; Friday’s bill has been programmed in association with Leftfoot, who have spent over a decade bringing leftfield and soulful nights to Birmingham. There will be two stages sitting right next to each other to showcase the artists, which means that during changeovers on the main stage you need only turn your head to catch the freshest up and coming talent on the second stage.
a day of highly talented local Jazz musicians. On Sunday The Yardbird, Birmingham’s very own Jazz and Funk parlour, take the reins. Elsewhere at the festival expect to see films, artist talks, workshops, Jazz dance performances, live comedy and spoken word. The Mostly Jazz Festival 2001 will be held in Moseley Park on Friday 1 July – Sunday 3 July. Tickets can be bought online at www.mostlyjazz.co.uk or from the Zen shop in Moseley, Polar Bear Records on York Road, Kings Heath or Swordfish Records, Temple Street. Or you can buy them (cash only but no booking fee) from Mostly Jazz Festival Office, 82 Fazeley Street, Digbeth.
On Saturday the stage has been handed over to Birmingham Jazz, who have programmed

What’s going on at Meteor Ford? The controversial plans for the vacant Meteor Ford site in Moseley village continue to move forwards, despite fierce local opposition. Many residents were puzzled on 11 May to receive letters from the City Council stating that the planning application for the development was approved on 6 May. The Planning Committee had approved it at a meeting on 3 March reversing their previous decision to reject it. Apparently full approval had to wait until the Section 106 (community gain) conditions integral to the application were formerly agreed between the Council and the developer. This happened in May. Simon Marsh of Exmax Moseley explained this at the AGM of Moseley Forum on Tuesday 17 May. He dispelled the rumours that have circulated recently: that the Medical Centre would not be built because of lack of funding and a new application would be submitted with just a larger Tesco and more parking spaces. Esther Boyd read a statement from Wake Green Surgery which confirmed that the funding for the Wake Green Development is in place.
Demolition of the buildings on the site will start in August/September, with careful treatment to avoid contamination in the area from asbestos, followed by decontamination of areas of the site affected by its former use. The ten month building contract is programmed to start in February 2012. The Medical Centre will be completed first. Simon Marsh was asked questions about ways in which he might satisfy the community by contributing to the amenity of the area. He answered that providing the Medical Centre, and the S106 conditions, was his contribution. When the building is complete he intends to sell it on to an investment company. Moseley Forum will continue to support the concerns of Moseley residents by asking local councillors to ensure that the conditions are delivered in Moseley’s best interests and will look for opportunities to influence Tesco and the Medical Centre.

The basis of their service is four treatments throughout the year. These are as follows: • • • •
Spring treatment Early summer treatment Late summer treatment Autumn/winter treatment
The first three of these treatments help to improve the lawn by application of a fertiliser and a weed-killer with the final treatment being a liquid moss control and winter feed. From these treatments you can expect to see a thicker, greener lawn with a reduction in the number of weeds and moss present. In addition to these treatments, GreenThumb also offers hollow-tine aeration and lawn scarification. These processes help to reduce compaction and thatch levels, again resulting in a lusher, greener lawn. Finally, GreenThumb can also offer specialist treatments to control diseases such as
