MBE for Moseley Activitist A Moseley community activist who was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list chose to break with tradition and receive the reward in the community centre she helped set up, rather than at Buckingham Palace. While most recipients head to London to receive their awards, Fiona Adams, 65, of Grove Avenue, Moseley, chose to receive her MBE from the Lord Lieutenant of West Midlands at the Moseley Exchange, which she helped establish in 2001.

has done such wonderful work for so many years. I think she must have started when she was a baby. The fact that she has chosen to have the event here tells you everything about her deep love and affection for the area and its people.”

Lord Lieutenant Paul Sabapathy handed the award to Fiona at the Exchange, behind the Post Office on Alcester Road, on December 2.

Fiona, who has been secretary of the Moseley Society since 1981, was instrumental in getting the village’s Special Licensing policy enacted. But Fiona admits it was probably picking up litter in the village’s car park once a month since 1979 that won her the award.

Mr Sabapathy addressed around 50 people at the event: “Most people want to go to the Palace, with all its splendour. The problem with going there is that you can only take three people but Fiona wanted to be in your midst where she

Open Your Eyes To Blepharitis Many people suffer in silence with blepharitis and dry eye, unaware that there is something out there that can help. Pabari Opticians in Moseley has some helpful advice. What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is an eye condition characterized by chronic inflammation of the eyelids. It is a common disorder that can easily be treated and managed but not cured.

Signs and Symptoms

• Red, sore eyelids, which may also be swollen • Gritty, burning or itching feeling in the eyes • Eyelids sticking together and crusting on the eyelashes • Dry eye

Treatment and Management

The single most important treatment principle is a daily routine of eyelid hygiene. This is best achieved by daily cleaning of the eyelid; Blepharitis tends to recur if you do not keep up with treatment.

Regular eyelid hygiene

Clean the eyelids with a preservative free eye lotion e.g. Blephasol or a Blephaclean lid wipe. Apply some Blephasol to a cotton wool pad. Gently wipe this along the upper and lower eyelids and lash area. Repeat for the other eye using a different pad or wipe. 12

You should do the above routine at least twice a day until symptoms settle. Then once a day to prevent further flare-ups. Your optometrist may advise ocular lubricants (artificial tears) if you also have dry eyes which is often the case when you have Blepharitis.

Dry Eye

Your eyes may not be making enough tears or the tears being produced are of poor quality and evaporate faster than they should. Symptoms include: • Dryness • Burning, stinging or itching • Gritty feeling • Tired or red eyes Ideally you should use a preservative free treatment such as Hyabak to reduce the risk of irritation.
