Moseley Farmers Market is the best in the country Moseley Farmers’ Market has won the award for best Farmers’ Market 2012 at the FARMA Local Food Awards – again! These awards are given to those who exemplify a passion for local food, a commitment to farming and the environment, a talent for retail, and the fruits of lots of hard work. Moseley Farmers’ Market is the only farmers’ market to have won this prestigious award twice from FARMA – the national Farmers’ Retail and Markets Association – previously winning in 2009. The Lord Mayor of Birmingham and the Bishop of Birmingham attended the official announcement of the award held within the bustling market itself. 14
Lord Mayor of Birmingham Councillor Anita Ward said: “I can see why Moseley Farmers market has won this prestigious award, so congratulations for winning the award for the best farmers market in the UK.” David Urquhart, Bishop of Birmingham said: “Today we’ve had the most amazing insight into the skills of the producers, whether it’s the artwork or the food. And we’ve met lots of people who are really having a good morning out so I hope that this market will be a really blessing to this community and to the enterprise that people are
showing in not just earning a living but making life better for everyone.” David Isgrove - the man behind the organisation of the market - said: “Of course, without Moseley people this market would not be such a success. Over the last 12 years it has grown from just 12 stalls to over 50. Moseley has rediscovered its heart, its sense of community and it’s a real meeting point, a social place providing such a valuable part of moseley life. It makes it so good to be part of moseley so well done to everyone who comes because without you this market would fall. So thank you very much.”
Moseley Farmers market is on the 4th Saturday of the month from 9am until 3pm and has over 50 stalls selling a wide range of food, drinks and gifts.

Sarehole Mill taking a step back in time Sarehole Mill is set to turn the clock back to its heyday when it was an operational mill, with the help of funding from Birmingham City Council. Thanks to the princely sum of ÂŁ300,000 the plans are in place to de-silt the mill-pond enabling the mill-wheel to become fully functional again and grind locally sourced wheat. Some of the flour will be sold within the mill shop, some will be baked into bread on the premises and there are also plans to supply local artisan bakers. This famous Tolkien icon is a well-loved local attraction and a central focal point 18
of the annual Tolkien festival. And with this being the 75th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit part of the funding has gone towards exciting development of the Tolkien exhibition within the museum. The granary building is now home to a number of new displays detailing local Tolkien connections. Phase one of this ambitious project is already underway with repairs having been made to the sluice gates. This meant that
volunteer millers are needed to keep up a continuity of milling so if you would like to get involved then you can! The aim is to begin milling during the summer next year, 2013.
earlier in the year the millpond had to be drained, revealing just how much silt there is to remove – up to a meter in some places. The pond will be refilled again this month and work will then begin in earnest in November in order to have as little impact as possible on local wildlife. In November the pond will be drained again and de-silting will take place together with the removal of much of the reeds. Mill machinery will be repaired and there will be repairs made to the roof. Finally a bake-house will be established to enable on-site baking. Over the winter a team of volunteers will be recruited and trained at Charlcote Mill by a professional miller. Up to fifteen
Sarehole Mill Curator Irene De Boo commented: We wanted to bring Sarehole Mill back to life and that is now going to happen thanks to the generous funding from Birmingham City Council. The voluntary organisation, renowned for its environmental work and stunning floral displays in and around the village, is ‘going for gold’ having won silver gilts in previous years. Volunteers manned a stall near St Mary’s Row from 8am – 3pm promoting the initiative and offering a free tickets to the Moseley in Bloom Open Gardens Weekend June 16th and 17th to everyone who signed up as a ‘friend’ of the charity. Moseley Road Baths awarded £3 million for restoration Moseley in Bloom launched its 2012 campaign to win a coveted Royal Horticultural Society ‘Britain in Bloom’ award at the Farmers Market on Saturday 24th March. This beautiful historic Edwardian baths has been awarded £3 million to help restore it to its former glory. Birmingham City Council has agreed to set aside the sum as match funding in a Heritage Lottery Bid which will hopefully lead to a further £5 million being provided by the lottery fund which together will fund phase one of the restoration. The 105 year old building has been closed since December 2010 and was due to re-open in February following a catalogue of delays. At the time of 24
going to press plans were to re-open the baths during April so if you are a fan of swimming the old fashioned way then now’s your chance! Phase one of the restoration includes a new roof and completely rewiring the entire building and is set to take two years. Plans are to close the pool again in 2014 to commence this work at the same time as the reopening of nearby Sparkhill pool. It is estimated that a further £9 million will be needed to undertake phase 2 of the restoration.
