Do you love adventure and hanging out with friends? That’s the reason Bear Grylls gives for volunteering as Chief Scout. If you want more excitement in your life and would like to give something back to the next generation then read on. Does the idea of fire-lighting, den building, water sports, orienteering and survival skills give you a bit of a buzz? Then this opportunity will be right up your street. Moseley Scout Group needs a handful of volunteers to help lighten the load for the existing team of 12 leaders and parent helpers. Volunteering with the scouts is an immensely rewarding experience and completely flexible. So you can give as much or as little time as you can, when it is convenient for you. You will get free training – which takes up 2-3 days at the most and includes things like an introduction to scouting history and ethos, child protection and health and safety.
When qualified, you will typically help out at Beaver, Cub or Scout sections. And really, the icing on the cake is the chance to help out on camp events, night time wide games, and you can put your name forward for the international scouting jamboree which happens every 4 years and attracts thousands of scouts from all over the world. Moseley 220th Scout Group meets at St Agnes Church Hall on the corner of Billesley Lane and Dyott Road. For more information please call the Group Chairman on 07813 700 923. The simple pleasures in a vegbox I have been receiving a weekly vegbox from Riverford Organics for several months now as an experiment and the experience has been most enjoyable. Every week I check what’s in the box online and then arrange my other shopping around it. And what has surprised me is how creative it has made me in the kitchen. I have discovered new and delicious vegetables and learned new ways to cook. I might be easy to please, but I do get a thrill when I open my front door and there is a lovely box of healthy shiny fruit and vegetables on the doorstep. This week, for example I have cherries, bananas and satsumas for the fruit bowl, and broad beans in their shells, mushrooms, romano peppers, tomatoes, swiss chard and courgettes. Some weeks I get more ordinary vegetables like onions, potatoes and carrots but the contents of the box varies 10
completely from week to week. Also within the box there is usually a recipe card which includes a few suggested recipes for this week’s veg. Riverford has loads of different veg and fruit boxes to choose from, I have gone for the medium fruit and veg box which seems to be working out just fine. You can also add other things into your box – last week I bought some lovely organic ham, sheep’s cheese and home-made homity pies. I like getting a vegbox because I feel immense satisfaction feeding my family healthy, nutritious food. And having it delivered to my door certainly beats dragging my children round the supermarket!

Tooth Whitening If you have ever wondered about tooth whitening then wonder no more, local dental surgeon Dr Ahmed Farooq explains all.
Tooth whitening is a process used to chemically alter the colour of teeth. This is achieved by removing stains and discolouration by adding a whitening agent (hydrogen peroxide) to the tooth surface. This results in the tooth looking whiter and gives an overall more youthful appearance.
due to natural erosion and exposure of the inner surface of the teeth (dentine), which is darker. The gums also recede with age, showing more root surface, which again tends to be a darker colour. The foods and drinks we consume also play a part. Drinks like red wine, tea and coffee can cause staining. Tar and nicotine from cigarette smoke are also major contributors.
Why do teeth become discoloured?
How white will my teeth become with chemical whitening?
The dazzling movie star teeth that you might see on TV are not a natural colour. Just because your teeth aren’t as white as those Hollywood smiles, do not assume that they are discoloured. There is a natural variation in the colour of teeth from person to person.
The answer to this question is dependant on several factors. To start off with, as mentioned earlier, our age, lifestyle and natural tooth colour varies. For this reason, the effects of tooth whitening will vary. Most people, however, will respond very well to whitening treatments depending on what method is used. There are a small group of individuals who may only notice a small difference. The best person to advise you on your likely result
What is tooth whitening?
Age and lifestyle factors are the main reasons for tooth discolouration. As you get older, the teeth become darker 12
will be your dentist. They will note your tooth colour before starting treatment, and they will try to estimate an outcome. Is tooth whitening safe? Tooth whitening is very safe when used under careful instructions from the dentist. The agent used comes in a gel form, which should not come into contact with the gums, as this may cause discoloration or burns. Most people experience no adverse reactions, but some patients may develop some sensitivity around the time of treatment depending on the strength of agent and method used. This can be easily resolved by using some sensitive toothpaste to mask the effect and by avoiding hot or cold food for 48 hours.
What are the benefits of tooth whitening? Whitening is now relatively cheap and easily accessible from your dentist. The main benefit is a healthier looking smile without removing any of the tooth structure. Whitening is a much more conservative approach to changing a smile compared to crowns and veneers, as these methods result in changing the shape of the tooth. The Tables are turning A national organisation is experiencing a rapid growth in members – and there’s a branch right on the doorstep waiting for you. Moseley Round Table, which recently celebrated its 60th year in the community, is actively recruiting like-minded people to discover the benefits of being a ‘Round Tabler’ - a feeling enjoyed by thousands across the UK and even more overseas. In the past year has seen numbers grow largely due to the packed social calendar, mixed with a little bit of giving something back to society. Moseley Round Table members, men aged 25-40, come from across most of south Birmingham, with Kings Heath and Moseley being the focus for fortnightly meets, offering a wide mix of experiences and activities to make you the envy of all your mates. Have you ever run with the Bulls in Pamplona? Ever given away £10,000 in one night to good causes? Felt like Jenson Button on giant scalextric track? The ‘Moseley Tablers’ have. 14
But as well as having fun, their focus is very much on raising money for local charities and they provide regular support to the likes of St Mary’s Hospice, the Girl Guides, Autism West Midlands, local schools and groups representing the homeless and disabled. As for activities, coming up this year the ‘Tablers’ are going to be testing their culinary skills, putting their taste buds to the test with whisky and wine tasting nights, and their driving prowess will be examined in a Top Gear challenge – with a difference! They will also be organising the areas biggest fireworks display. There is something for everyone, and being in Round Table can broaden your skills and social network. Interested in finding our more? then log on to their website www. moseley.roundtable.co.uk, follow them on twitter @moseleyroundtbl or go along to one of their events.

Gardeners'’Weekend comes home The Gardeners’ Weekend show in Birmingham is to return to the park where it was staged for almost 30 years. This popular event was controversially moved to the city centre last year which sparked uproar among fans of the show. Now the council has handed control of the event to the city’s gardening and allotment groups and given them a £20,000 grant to help. It will be staged as the Birmingham Annual Gardening Show in Kings Heath Park on September 1 and 2. Chairman of the new organising committee Jonathon Jaffa said: “We are taking this event back to its roots. It will be more about gardening and less about buying accessories and furniture for your garden. “Central to the show is the flower and vegetable marquee which will house prize winning displays from local allotmentholders and flower societies.” The show will be a smaller more gardening focused event, free to enter, with plant stalls, children’s activities, a craft fair, and 24
demonstrations from the Beekeeping Society and local wood turners. There will be a courtesy bus running between the high street and the park throughout Saturday and Sunday and the event will coincide with the Kings Heath Farmers’ Market on the Saturday and an antiques fair in the village square on the Sunday. Mr Jaffa, who runs York Supplies hardware shop in Kings Heath, said the show will be staged just in the back field, close to the entrance on Avenue Road between the children’s play area and tennis courts. This is to ensure that the larger front field remains in good condition for local people using the park. In previous years it has been rendered unusable for some time after the show. He said the council had been supportive in offering advice, the use of facilities, and the grant, and the parks department has made a commitment to reinstate the field after the event.

New kid on the block There’s a new place to see and be seen in Kings Heath – Fletchers bar on York Road opened in July. Fletchers is a chic and stylish bar with a retro industrial look, complemented by gorgeous vintage fabrics and walls, and an imaginative use of lighting. You would not believe the transformation from the slightly scruffy, homely Cornerstones Café it used to be to the sexy, funky bar it has now become. The bar offers a range of good wines and real ales and serves cocktails if that’s what you fancy. There is comfy sofa seating as well as high bar stools, and an intimate outside walled courtyard area for those balmy summer evenings (we should get one or two). Before it even opened Fletchers was chosen to host the launch of the Kings Heath Walk of Fame at the end 28
of June with live bands performing throughout the afternoon. You can expect to find regular live music, comedy and cabaret as well as quiz nights and wine tasting events at Fletchers. It is a great place for a quick after work drink, romantic night out, or a boozy evening with your friends. This fabulous addition to the already buzzing nightlife on York Road has been launched by local businesswoman Tracy Fletcher who runs the Kitchen Garden Café in partnership with Brett Rehling. Opening times Fletchers is open evenings and weekends, Thursday-Saturday until 1pm, Sunday-Wednesday until 11pm.

Kings Heath Walk of Fame We may think York Road is pretty cool these days but it pales in comparison with the York Road of the 60s when the Ritz Ballroom was in its heyday. An amazing list of top musicians and comedians were either born, lived in or performed in Kings Heath and the Ritz was at the centre of it all. People like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, The Kinks, Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, Jimmy Cliff and Gene Vincent all performed there back in the 60s. And a local music enthusiast is determined this rich musical heritage will not be lost in the mists of time. Ken Whitaker started his campaign with an article in the Birmingham Mail calling on people to send in their memories of the Ritz and he now has a wealth of stories and memories and has launched the Kings Heath Walk of Fame.
On 27 June the Lord Mayor unveiled the first commemorative Birmingham Civic Society Music Plate on York Road at Cash Converters which was formerly the Ritz Ballroom. This will complement the existing Performance Rights Society’s performance birthplace plaque for UB40. On 16 July Toyah Wilcox became the first star to unveil her very own pavement plaque on York Road and will perform live at the Hare and Hounds that evening. The plan is for 30 pavement plaques, all on York Road, to be unveiled over the next two years including the likes of UB40, Frank Skinner and Robert Plant.
First choice for celebrities! Last month Toyah Wilcox ate at Sylhet Spice while she was in Kings Heath promoting the York Road Walk of Fame. And she follows in the footsteps of a whole host of celebrities including Nicholas Bailey who played Dr Truman in Eastenders, ex England cricket star Gladstone Small, Hollywood actress Neve Campbell, England rugby player Matt Dawson, John Ivory who presents A Place in The Sun, Jeremy Irons, Chris Evans and John Ottoway to name but a few. Come and enjoy our delicious food and see for yourselves why they chose to eat at Sylhet Spice. OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK 5.30-12 MIDNIGHT

Moseley History Society Moseley residents donned Victorian outfits at the village’s recent festival to drum up interest in a history project that is trying to delve deep into the area’s colourful history. The Heritage Lottery Fund has granted Moseley Society Local History Group £25,900 to finance the project and historian Chris Sutton has been commissioned to uncover many of the area’s hidden tales. “We’re trying to broaden the scope of the study beyond just the more famous residents from deep in the past. While we’re still investigating JRR Tolkien, Joseph Lucas [of Lucas Industries] and the Chamberlains, we’re also trying to persuade residents to dig out details about Ozzy Osbourne and UB40,” he said. The area has hosted refugees from Adolf Hitler and Slobodan Milosevic as well as 34
a growing Pakistani community, which is often missed out from historical studies. If you have any details about Moseley’s history, please contact Chris on vcgcbham@yahoo.co.uk or view the displays at the Moseley Exchange, behind the Post Office, where Chris works on a Monday and Tuesday. Pictured from left: Geoff Barnbrook, a Moseley resident interested in the project, daughter Gioia Barnbrook and her mother Angela Barnbrook look to draw in recruits to the history group at the Moseley Festival on Saturday.
