Go eco A family home in Moseley has undertaken a eco makeover and Claire Spencer of Susmo went along to take a look. The house, located near Moseley Bog, has been through an extraordinary eco journey. Owners Sophie Garner and Nick Isaac come from a background in home renovation: both of their fathers built their own houses. So when it came to their own home, they weren’t afraid to stretch their vision. Firstly, they wanted to make the property as close as possible to Passivhaus standards. These standards are achieved by superinsulation (defined as using materials to achieve ‘thermal resistance’ of 40+), making the house as airtight as possible, maximising ‘solar gain’ and recycling the warmth from the stale air in the house. Secondly, they wanted to make it as independent as possible from mains power sources. Finally, they wanted to ensure that the property’s carbon output was as low as possible. 10
So they set their architect to work on their vision. To achieve the Passivhaus standard, the insulation not only has to provide the right level of thermal resistance, but also has to form a complete, unbroken blanket around the entire house. This is quite tricky to achieve, explained Sophie, and required “a break cut into the brickwork from eaves to ground level, in which sits a sandwich of insulation” to allow the insulation to change from external to internal. This is topped up by around four times the usual amount of loft insulation and triple glazed, argon-filled windows. Claire commented: “It’s a beautiful home, and while the extent of the changes wouldn’t be practical or achievable for everyone, it was really useful to see what can be done in a real home.”

The Tables are turning A national organisation is experiencing a rapid growth in members – and there’s a branch right on the doorstep waiting for you. Moseley Round Table, which recently celebrated its 60th year in the community, is actively recruiting like-minded people to discover the benefits of being a ‘Round Tabler’ - a feeling enjoyed by thousands across the UK and even more overseas. In the past year has seen numbers grow largely due to the packed social calendar, mixed with a little bit of giving something back to society. Moseley Round Table members, men aged 25-40, come from across most of south Birmingham, with Kings Heath and Moseley being the focus for fortnightly meets, offering a wide mix of experiences and activities to make you the envy of all your mates. Have you ever run with the Bulls in Pamplona? Ever given away £10,000 in one night to good causes? Felt like Jenson Button on giant scalextric track? The ‘Moseley Tablers’ have. 14
But as well as having fun, their focus is very much on raising money for local charities and they provide regular support to the likes of St Mary’s Hospice, the Girl Guides, Autism West Midlands, local schools and groups representing the homeless and disabled. As for activities, coming up this year the ‘Tablers’ are going to be testing their culinary skills, putting their taste buds to the test with whisky and wine tasting nights, and their driving prowess will be examined in a Top Gear challenge – with a difference! They will also be organising the areas biggest fireworks display. There is something for everyone, and being in Round Table can broaden your skills and social network. Crumbling Moseley building given a new lease of life Husband and wife team, Ayaz and Lauren have taken on the massive task of renovating the former home of the Asman-Carnegie Boys Club, just a few houses along from the Post Office in Moseley Village. The grand Mock Tudor property, built in 1898 has been vacant for around 6 years and now the enthusiastic couple are restoring the building back to its former glory.
Richard Cadbury, the wooden porch entranceway, the Mock Tudor timber paneling and the strikingly large bay window, which will serve as a magnificent area for their store window display.
This winter they will be opening a design-led haberdashery, fabric and yarn store in the property with a large open plan creative studio for inspiring creative workshops such as sewing, soft furnishing and knitting as well as events, parties and exhibitions.
In the meantime the couple has launched a website and online store www.guthrie-ghani.co.uk under their company name Guthrie & Ghani which offers a taster for the larger collection of products that will be on offer in the shop. The website also hosts their blog which features regular updates on how the renovation is progressing and inspiring creative ideas and tutorials.
The couple is keen to preserve the original features of the building. This includes a foundation stone laid by Mrs 16

Moseley History Society Moseley residents donned Victorian outfits at the village’s recent festival to drum up interest in a history project that is trying to delve deep into the area’s colourful history. The Heritage Lottery Fund has granted Moseley Society Local History Group £25,900 to finance the project and historian Chris Sutton has been commissioned to uncover many of the area’s hidden tales. “We’re trying to broaden the scope of the study beyond just the more famous residents from deep in the past. While we’re still investigating JRR Tolkien, Joseph Lucas [of Lucas Industries] and the Chamberlains, we’re also trying to persuade residents to dig out details about Ozzy Osbourne and UB40,” he said. The area has hosted refugees from Adolf Hitler and Slobodan Milosevic as well as
a growing Pakistani community, which is often missed out from historical studies. Riverford Organic's recipe of the month Carrots and Feta (serves 4) Ingredients: • • • • • •
About 750g of carrots Olive oil 1 tablespoon of toasted cumin seeds 100g feta 2 tablespoons of chopped mint Good olive oil to drizzle
Method
When cool enough to handle, squash them in to small pieces with your hands (pick them up and squeeze!) Now mix in the cumin seeds which you have toasted in a dry pan until they are just starting to colour. Then ground the seeds in a mortar and pestle. Now spread them loosely on a plate/serving dish and scatter over the feta and mint, drizzle over the olive oil and you’re done!
Scrub carrots and cut into halves or quarters depending on the size of the carrots. Toss in some olive oil and toast in the oven at 180oc for about 45mins (they need to be slightly browned). 20

TLC Lottery Manager Carl Bayliss meets Nursing Staff Samuel Jennings and Lindsey Findon at Birmingham St Mary's Hospice, Raddlebarn Road, Selly Park.
Local lottery supports local charities Last year TLC Lottery donated £126,000 to Birmingham St. Mary’s Hospice - enough to fund around 4,500 hours of care. That covers nursing care, physiotherapy, meals, dressings and medication which are delivered round-the-clock, 365 days a year, to people from across Birmingham and Sandwell. Each year the charity supports around 1,000 patients and at any one time is providing care to 300 people. The Hospice delivers its services through a network of palliative care doctors, clinical nurse specialists and physiotherapists, who support patients at home, at the charity’s inpatient unit and the Day Hospice in Selly Park.

Loudmouth with Eastenders' actor Nitin Ganatra at the UK Sexual Health Awards
How do you talk to your children about sex? This is a topic that many parents find embarrassing and difficult to talk to their kids about, but we all know that it needs to be done. Luckily there is a local theatre company that goes into schools to do just that. Loudmouth Education and Training spent their early years in Moseley and were finalists in this year’s UK Sexual Health Awards. They are now just down the road in Balsall Heath and go into many of our local schools to help our children have a healthy well informed attitude towards sex. Loudmouth is the first theatre company to be nominated for the Pamela Sheridan Award for innovation in sex and relationships education. The company uses theatre to make the teaching of sensitive issues safe, appropriate and memorable. The company was founded by Eleanor Vale (still a proud Moseley resident!) and Chris Cowan in 1994 and has reached over 250,000 young people with their innovative work on issues including puberty and bullying in 30
primary schools and alcohol and teenage pregnancy in secondary schools and colleges. Eleanor Vale says ‘learning about these real life issues is so important for young people and so we work hard to keep the price realistic so schools can continue to afford this work in tough times. We recently worked in Moseley School on growing up and puberty which was a great success. St Dunstan's School Front Entrance
Exciting changes at St Dunstan's School
Playground
A new and exciting £2m building project at St Dunstan’s School has been underway since February this year. The first phase will be completed for the children’s return in September. At the end of the project some of the new facilities at St Dunstan’s will be five new classrooms, new withdrawal areas where staff can work in small groups with gifted and talented children or those who need extra support in small groups, three new Foundation classrooms with a dedicated outdoor play area and a Research Library for children to work in. The whole school will become wireless, there will be new toilets, staffroom, admin offices and a new school entrance. This is a very exciting time for St Dunstan’s! 34
In October and November prospective Nursery and Reception parents can come along and see for yourselves the difference these changes have made to this well respected local primary school. There are going to be three open days so hopefully you’ll be able to make it to one of them. Two of them are in the morning at 9.30 on Wednesday 17 October and Thursday 8 November and the third is in the evening from 7pm on Wednesday 14 November.
