Sun sparkling on the water Wide open space, sun sparkling on the water, the sound of birds singing, people messing about in boats, and the Birmingham City skyline in the background. Edgbaston Reservoir is one of this city’s best kept secrets and it is not a secret at all. Yet go there and you will find a peaceful, tranquil, often deserted place that you would not think possible so close to the buzzing hive of activity in the city centre. Malcolm Jacques has been a ranger here since 1997 and still finds new things to marvel at. This year he and his colleagues have been installing protection for a couple of nesting swans. If you enjoy the great outdoors then you can go along any time for an explore, the best way to find the reservoir car park at the end of Reservoir Road. And if you are the more adventurous type and thought that water sports and activities were something to do at the seaside then you are in for a surprise. A number of waterbased clubs meet here on a regular basis to make use of this fantastic resource. Edgbaston Water Sports - canoeing and kayaking, paddleboard, windsurfing, dinghy and powerboats. 0121 454 1997 or www.edgbastonwatersports.co.uk
Midland Sailing Club - sailing club and junior sailing club meeting every Saturday and Wednesday evenings during the summer. 0121 454 0084 or www.midlandsailingclub.org.uk Birmingham Rowing Club - courses on learning how to row in March, June and November. 07966 166 602 or www.birminghamrowingclub.co.uk TS Vernon Sea Cadets - part of Midland Sailing Club offering youngsters aged 1018 opportunities in a range of water sports, first aid, camping, football and Duke of Edinburgh Award. 0121 454 0084 or www.sea-cadets.org/birminghamvernon Fishing - between June and March you can arrange per day or for the whole season. Just turn up and arrange at the lodge via Reservoir Road or see www.birmingham.gov.uk/fishing There is also a visitor centre on site with displays and artifacts showing the history of the reservoir since it was built in 1827 to top up the canal system, a function it is still used for to this day.

Email not working? This is one of the biggest nightmares facing small (and big) business these days. Email down time means losing credibility, losing money, wasting time and extreme frustration.
provide cloud hosting, sort out virus problems and a whole host of other useful IT services.
Many business owners believe that it is just the nature of the beast and a cross they have to bear. Rob Savage of Kixo thinks differently.
Kixo can work as an external IT support company for all your requirements or alongside an internal IT person and offers a fixed fee service so that you pay the same amount each month regardless of how many times you call.
Rob said: “We help businesses fix their email so that there is minimal or no downtime - and more importantly we also help to make sure the IT invested in contributes to the bottom line, rather than taking away from it. “We often get called when people are in the middle of a crisis - and sometimes the email has been down for several days. But there is really no reason why even the most severe problem should not be fixed within a matter of hours.” “The technology behind modern email is extremely complex which means there are countless reasons why email stops working. We try to establish where the problem lies by talking it through step by step. This initial call can be just a couple of minutes, yet gives us the vital clues we need to be able to sort out the problem quickly.”
What really makes the team at Kixo stand apart from the vast choice of IT companies is their personal approach. They try to get to know your business really well so that they can help ensure that IT is an asset rather than a constant headache. Do you like a nice juicy steak? If you do then West 12 Bar and Grill at the Marriott Hotel is the place to be. They have no less than five different steak dishes on their menu to choose from. And you don’t have to be a guest at the hotel to dine there. Having driven past the place countless times often with the thought in mind that Bill Clinton once slept there, I was quite looking forward to enjoying an evening meal there to write this review. Overlooking Five Ways Roundabout, The Marriott is easy to get to from Harborne or Edgbaston and has a free car park which is always a bonus. Food & Beverage Manager Franklyn D’Costa and Executive Chef Danish Bhaiji gave us a genuinely warm welcome and were most helpful in suggesting the best dishes to choose and what wines would go well with our food. For our starters we had the comforting French Onion Soup with melted gruyere and the delicate delectable scallops with celeriac puree, pickled apple and celeriac. The food and beverage manager helped us to select a most wonderful wine – the Robert Mondavi Twin Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon – such a rare treat. And for our main course we had the T-bone steak and roasted chicken marinated in herbs
and beer, both served with really special home made chips. The meat was flawless, falling off the bone and melt in the mouth. And it was served with a choice of delicious sauces which really brought out the full bodied flavours. And despite managing to finish our generous portions we still found space for desert which we were proudly told are all made from scratch by the pastry chef. We shared the rich and mouthwatering Bournville chocolate mousse and caramel gateaux, and the zingy zesty pinapple tart tatin with coconut ice cream. And I am ashamed to say we polished off the lot. If you can get over the fact that you are in a hotel - and once you are in the restaurant you can do just that - then this is a place not to be missed for delicious food in very pleasant surroundings. We will definitely be back. Amy Watson Editor

View from the showroom balcony
Is your house toasty warm, quiet and difficult to break in to? If so then you have no need to read any further. But if your standard of living could be improved by replacing windows and doors in your home then this might be of interest to you. Double glazing salesmen have a pretty raw deal when it comes to reputation. And that can be hard for the good guys to overcome. Which is why Finesse Windows in Kings Norton have opened a new showroom to demonstrate the quality of their workmanship, overlooking the very factory floor where all their products are made from scratch. If you want windows and doors that scream out quality then go along and have a look for yourself. ‘Any colour as long as it’s white’ is yesterday’s news. The new showroom houses top of the range coloured window and doors in Chartwell Green, cream, black, rosewood, anthracite grey, Irish oak, and the obligatory white. You can also see the gorgeous stained glass windows, encapsulated within triple glazing units so they are easy to clean. They have windows with blinds between the panes of glass that open and close with a magnetic mechanism - also easy to clean. If you want to keep the original period features of your windows Finesse has a
range of monkey tail and tear drop handles that give them that extra special finishing touch. And if you ask them, they will show you a cross section of their doors which demonstrates why they are so much more difficult to break into than conventional double glazing doors. Managing Director Russell Bridge said: “We would like people to see for themselves why we are so proud of the quality of our products. So come and have a look, we don’t bite!” Finesse is a family business and it has been running since 1981.

Buying or selling property? Then you need the right legal support behind you. In our latest ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ article we meet Ian Butler, a director in the property team, with over 30 years experience in Tyndallwoods footer for use property law. Ian helps residential and commercial clients who are buying, selling, re-financing, extending leases or buying the freehold on properties, to ensure the process runs as smoothly as possible. Ian said: “You can see trends in the residential property market over the years. Presently a big issue is having a full history of planning permission and building regulation approvals and certificates for any work carried out to a property. Get this sorted, and a lot of stress and grief can be avoided. Many people do not appreciate that a replacement central heating boiler requires a building regulations compliance certificate; and replacement windows require building regulation approval or a FENSA certificate. “Also, be aware of Japanese knotweed. We have had clients lose sales and purchases as a result of the existence of this plant at or adjacent to a property. A home from home Making the move from living in their own home to living in a care home for the elderly is often steeped in emotion and one of the biggest decisions you may need to make for your parents. Fortunately there are some attractive and well run places on our doorstep to choose from. Bryony House stands in beautiful gardens in the pleasant green and leafy suburb of Bournville, one of the most desirable residential areas of Birmingham. Providing supported living for up to 35 elderly people with high standards of accommodation and support, Bryony House sits somewhere around the middle of the price range. Trustee David Loveday commented: “Bryony House was established in 1955, with one very clear objective; to create a home within a home for every resident. The house is an independent not-forprofit charity and therefore is not committed to providing a profit for proprietors or shareholders. We have an extremely stable staff base - one of our carers recently retired after 30 years service and we have several members of staff who have been with us for over ten years. This makes for a warm, welcoming and homely environment. Friendly, helpful and qualified staff are on duty round the clock to assist residents with their personal needs. Privacy and independence are
respected and residents are free to come and go as they please. Residents also have the benefit of a visiting hairdresser and chiropodist, as well as opportunities for regular social events and activities. Day-to-day care is supervised by the care manager and senior staff. Should nursing care be required a district nurse will be asked to visit, and local doctors visit if and when needed. The Friends of Bryony, a group of volunteers from the nearby neighbourhood, provide a variety of leisure activities. These include themed suppers, music concerts and coffee mornings. If you are interested in having a look around please contact Care Manager Debbie Bennett by telephone or email. Local Hospice appoints new patron Judy Dyke Managing Director of Edgbaston-based Tyndallwoods Solicitors has been appointed a Patron of Birmingham St Mary's Hospice. Serving a population of 1.4 million, the Hospice cares for more than 1,000 patients each year, looking after those with illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and respiratory disease. Judy enjoyed a thorough induction process which showed her many and various aspects of the work of the Hospice. It also helped her to appreciate the hard work and commitment of the special volunteer force and fund-raising team. Judy spent day one in the Day Hospice staffed by nurses, a therapy activity co-ordinator and three volunteers. That day activities including flower arranging and water colour painting. Patients received transfusion of blood products while others had their hair done. On day two Judy visited three of the 12 Hospice shops including the furniture store in Cotteridge and the first Hospice shop on Heeley Road which houses the fabulous designer

evening dress room. A special team also identifies more valuable items that have been donated and which are then sold on Ebay. On day three Judy was privileged to work in the In-patient Unit which has 25 beds in a mixture of multi-bedded wards and single rooms. There were 4 doctors working in both general practice and palliative medicine. Judy's role as Patron will have particular emphasis in relation to fund-raising. She was pleased to support the Hospice Corporate Partnerships launch at Barclays with the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress who have named Birmingham St Mary's Hospice as one of their chosen charities for their mayoral year. Call the Midwife - Birmingham's new home-birth team has been launched. Sarah Noble, Consultant Midwife at Birmingham Women’s Hospital is here to tell you that the new home-birth team is up and running and taking bookings. Birmingham South Central NHS commissioners have invested considerable funds into the new home birth team, in a response to a national research study, which showed that mums who have already had a straight forward birth, have a reduced chance of caesarean section and other medical interventions if they choose to have their next baby at home.
all of the team, which means you have a high probability of knowing your midwife in labour.
The advantages of birthing at home include the need for less pain relief, not having to transfer into hospital when labour starts, a lower risk of infection, a more relaxed environment and the use of a birthing pool. You can have as many or few birth partners as you want and the best part of all is during the first few hours of your baby’s life, you can all be together as a family unit, tucked up in your own bed enjoying your first cuddle.
“However unlike the midwives in the 1950's BBC Drama series, we won’t be arriving on bicycles with a basket on the front, but in cars fully equipped with the latest home-birth kit."
Sarah said: “We are a small team of friendly, caring and experienced midwifes, who are committed to making your journey through pregnancy, birth and beyond not only safe but an enjoyable experience. We are family centred and offer continuity of care with one midwife and the opportunity to meet
“We appreciate it can be quite stressful coming to a clinic appointment at hospital, so we can come to you, at home and even do early evening appointments or weekend appointments which may be preferable if you are a working parent.

Stephen King’s art is now rising in value, so don’t miss this utterly beautiful spring exhibition at Harborne’s favourite art gallery.
He works and lives in Twickenham to this day. Exhibition venues include Whitechapel Open, Square Gallery Highgate, Stephen Bartlett Gallery, Godalming Museum Gallery, London Sketch Club, Royal Oil Painters Institute, London, Gallery 286, Earls Court, Congregational Gallery, Rothbury and now Harborne Art Gallery.

Does your garden need a bit of attention? Gardener Jon Haycox has some words of advice for this time of year. At long last, the dark, dismal and unbelievably wet days of winter have been replaced by turquoise skies with promise in its eyes. Spring has definitely sprung and summer is just around the corner.
If you have a greenhouse, now is the time to sow bedding plants as well as vegetable seedlings if you have a veg patch - ready for planting out mid-May to early June.
This is the time of year when we are beginning to enjoy our garden again after months of short, cold days which see many of us neglecting the outside part of our homes.
You can also give your hedge its first trim of the year as most of the nesting birds will have hatched their young by now.
The garden looks lush and inviting, the children can play outside again and you can entertain your friends on warm, long evenings. To get the most out of your garden this season the lawn could do with a little TLC, so consider aerating to alleviate soil compaction and provide much needed oxygen to the roots. A generous feed of fertiliser will provide a boost of welcome nutrients. And you need to make sure that you prune any dead growth from perennials to allow for the new growth to be healthy and vigorous.
But most of all, this is a time of year to simply be in the garden, breathing in the scents and listening to the sounds. Nothing can beat it. Jon Haycox JP Garden Services
Weeds will need to be kept under control as they start to wake up too. You can spray with weedkiller but the best way is to remove them by the roots as this is kinder to birds and other wildlife.

Police warn of 'courier con' with criminals targeting the elderly Locally over the past few months and across the West Midlands, a cruel scam targeting pensioners and tricking them into giving their bank details away, has escalated. The scam involves callers posing as police officers and panicking targets into believing their bank account has been hacked…and that they need to seize the cards and security details, including PIN numbers, to stop further fraudulent transactions. In some cases, the scammers have sent couriers to the customer’s homes to collect bank cards which have then been used to withdraw cash or go on spending sprees. The ‘courier con’ gained popularity amongst scammers last year and in the first six weeks of this year more than 30 people – whose ages range from 59 to 93 – have fallen for the ruse and collectively lost around £10,000. West Midlands Police has launched an awareness campaign asking for help to spread the word about this scam, warning vulnerable residents that they come into contact with and advising how to help protect themselves against this type of fraud. While police continue to carry out investigations to bring these heartless criminals to justice, we appeal to members of the public for help to spread the message as widely as possible. Find out how to help protect yourself against courier fraud, below.
Protect yourself against courier fraud: • Your bank or police will NEVER send a courier to your home to collect bank cards • Your bank or police will NEVER ask for your PIN number • If you receive one of these calls end it immediately. If you’ve been a victim call your bank and cancel your cards immediately – try to call from a different phone if reporting it immediately after being contacted by someone you believe was a scammer – and report it to West Midlands Police on 101. Let's get moving As part of their Let's Get Moving campaign, Birmingham Friends of the Earth joined forces with a school in Harborne to look at air pollution in their area. Poor air quality can have adverse effects on respiratory health and can cause an increase in problems such as asthma. The Let's Get Moving campaign aims to tackle this by calling for more investment in walking and cycling in order to reduce the main cause - traffic. Friends of the Earth ran sessions in the school to teach children about air pollution. After explaining what air pollution is and the effects it has, they set up an experiment with the children to measure levels of Nitrogen dioxide at certain locations in their area over two weeks. This involved putting up small tubes called diffusion tubes designed to measure levels of Nitrogen dioxide in the air. The results of the experiment showed levels of air pollution almost at EU legal limits. The results also showed that air pollution was
38
greater on the busy main roads in the area. However it wasn’t all bad news. During the sessions children came up it ideas to combat the problem, for example by walking and cycling to school, and were very keen to take action. Everyone can help tackle poor air quality by cycling and walking more, and supporting Lets Get Moving, by signing the petition for more investment in walking and cycling. Schools who would like to take part in Citizen Science and do their bit, please contact Julien Pritchard campaigns@birminghamfoe.org.uk You can find out more information about the Let’s Get Moving campaign at www.birminghamfoe.org.uk/air-quality

Fulfillment through achievement Harborne based charity Cerebral Palsy Midlands has launched its exciting new heritage exhibition, Fulfilment through Achievement: The History of Cerebral Palsy Midlands and its Community of People 1947 – 2014. The exhibition was officially launched in February at a special commemorative event which included numerous guests from the local community, charity members, their families, plus representatives from local history societies and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The exhibition is part of a greater heritage project looking into the history of the charity, which was formed in 1947. The project has seen the charity’s staff and volunteers interviewing people about their life stories and growing up in Birmingham in the modern era with a disability. The project itself has been fully funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Adam Siviter, Development Officer of Cerebral Palsy Midlands, said “The launch was a great success in showcasing over nine months’ worth of hard work and research, and was a fitting tribute to peoples’ life stories and the challenges and successes they have had. We hope that the exhibition is visited by many visitors over the coming months, and is
appealing to the people of Birmingham.” The charity also hopes to engage in an educational outreach programme with local schools, history societies and other groups who have a passion for local history. The programme will include guided tours for groups of the exhibition, plus a tailored presentation or workshop. Spring is sprung! Have you had your Spring Clean? I remember the joy of getting my own washing machine for the first time and washing blinking everything in the house and getting it out on the line. Happy days kiddos. Though the three piece suite still isn’t properly dry and the budgie was never the same again. It’s nice that the days are getting longer and we can get out and stretch our legs a bit. A walk round the neighbourhood improves circulation. Getting out and about locally is not just for the heart but also it is vital for the spreading of what some may call ‘tittle tattle’ but what I prefer to call ‘news.’ I always think a good measure of a healthy community is how quickly news can travel down its high streets. My next door neighbour Vera couldn’t find her keys the other day and they rang her up - the NSA and told her they were in her other handbag - which I thought was nice. Enjoy the extra hours of daylight.
