The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls - Pablo Picasso So if you’re feeling a little dusty, mac Birmingham has plenty going on to shake away the cobwebs this spring! As the beautiful Cannon Hill Park blossoms back into life the mac celebrates the return of spring in its own way, with a vast and impressive itinerary of stuff to get stuck into. Rest assured, nobody is getting left out, mac has taken extra care to be sure there’s something for everyone. Cinema Bambino caters to new parents who want a chance to go out and see a film, enabling them to bring their babies along with them... that’s right, nobody puts baby in the corner!. Mac also hosts the ever popular ‘Screen Juniors’ - a monthly event for kids - cinema screenings especially for little ones, and also includes relaxed screenings for children on the autistic spectrum or who have learning disabilities. Another great show to look forward to is ‘I believe in Unicorns’ presented by the truly captivating Theatre Alibi, who are touring internationally through spring and summer performing this adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s enchanting book. Described by The Guardian as ‘an evening of thrilling theatre’ and by the Daily Telegraph as ‘A
rare and blessed production that could well inspire a child with a lifelong love of theatre’ this one really is a must see. * Since the big renovation a few years ago mac has become an embodiment of artistic achievement and still maintains its breezy, serene atmosphere we all know and love, so why not get involved? It’s like spring cleaning for the soul. Ruby Watson

Vital Support for Grandma after Illness 60-year-old Surinder looks after a busy home with children and grandchildren. Her children work, then come home late to cooked meals. She looks after the kids during school holidays. A recent serious shoulder operation meant reduced mobility for several months. She missed her sense of independence and value, and her family had to keep taking time off work. They contacted Clarriots Care and Suzie helped Surinder on a daily basis until she recovered. She assisted with difficult tasks to do with household chores and cooking, with Surinder overseeing her. Surinder said; "My right arm was out of use for months. You take it for granted how much you get done. But Suzie was so much help, even down to helping with the children in the holidays. I really trust Clarriots."

Looking after your lawn It’s spring at last! The nights are getting longer and you want your lawn looking its best for all those garden parties and barbecues. So here are a few handy words of advice from local lawn-care specialist Scott Harrison. Unfortunately, as the grass wakes up after its winter snooze, so do the weeds. Dandelions, buttercups and daisies can take over as summer approaches, so start your lawn care regime by tackling them with an appropriate weed killer. Once the weeds have been sent packing, it’s time to fertilise your grass, building its strength and getting it lush and green for the summer. But be careful using the wrong products, or using them incorrectly, could leave your grass weak and patchy.
If you'd like to know more Please call Scott Harrison, Lawnscience North Worcestershire on 07570 833 000.

Dinner to die for at Genting Casino If you're looking for fine dining in a sophisticated and relaxing spot, look no further. You will probably have driven past this elegant Casino on the corner of Hagley Road and Norfolk Road many times, and may have wondered what it might be like inside. My mum and I had heard only great things about the restaurant Fahrenheit at Genting Casino, so we went to find out what all the fuss was about. I'm sure you will be as surprised as we were that you do not need to be a member to eat there, only over 18. From the moment we entered we were treated like royalty. Soaking up the glamorous atmosphere of the casino we were escorted to the cocktail lounge where we indulged in pre-dinner cocktails. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror with cocktail in hand and felt a wave of delicate distinction! After musing over the delightful array of choices in the surprisingly reasonably priced dinner menu, for my starter I chose the black pudding scotch egg with wholegrain mustard aioli, a fantastic opening act. The mustard aioli gave a lovely little kick to an otherwise soft, warm, melt-in-your-mouth dish. Mum had pea and asparagus risotto with crumbled feta which was deliciously rich and creamy. For my main course I chose the Josper grilled chicken breast burger with crispy chorizo, haloumi, tomato salsa and sweet potato fries. It was every bit as indulgently satisfying as you'd imagine. The flavours worked together harmoniously and I was particularly surprised by the the sweet potato fries which were
seasoned with chunky rock salt and added a great twist to a classic. Mum went with grilled Loch Duarte salmon with clams and white wine cream linguine, another divine concoction. We finished the evening with the chocolate, hazelnut and frangellico fondant, deeply luxurious but surprisingly not too heavy going, so after a hearty feast we were still able to polish off every last bit of it! And the real treat was the bill - the meal was impeccable value for such superb quality. If you are looking for something really special and a little bit different the restaurant at Genting is perfect - so why not give it a go? The full menu is on the website so you can do a little window shopping before taking the plunge. www.gentingcasinos.co.uk” Genting Casino 1 Norfolk Rd Edgbaston B15 3PS

One World... One Breath World Tai Chi Day - one day across the globe hour by hour Hundreds of cities spanning 80 nations will unite to create a 'tidal' hour of Tai chi to celebrate World Tai Chi and Qigong Day on Saturday 27th April. Tai Chi Stuff, who run classes throughout Birmingham, are co-ordinating Birmingham’s contribution to the event which will be held at the Botanical Gardens from 10.30 to 11.00am. Tai Chi, a Chinese martial art practised for both defence and health, focuses on spiritual and mental strength. Qigong translates as 'Life Energy Cultivation' and is a practice of aligning body, breath and mind. Used by young and old alike as a means of maintaining health, healing injuries and self-defence, Tai Chi has much to offer the modern world and its hectic lifestyle. Steve Jones, Chief Instructor and a listed instructor with the World Taiji Boxing Association (WTBA) runs Tai Chi Stuff and urges people to try it for the health benefits. Steve said; "It's fundamentally about change, flow. Over the years, I've seen life
changing results in hundreds of members due to the all-encompassing benefits of Tai Chi. "There are no restrictions on age, current health, or previous exercise and fitness experience. Practising Tai Chi, on a regular basis will almost certainly bring health benefits." Tai Chi Stuff's Harborne classes have members ranging from 12 years old to 94 - Betty, from Moseley, has been a tai chi enthusiast for two years. The event starts 10am local time in New Zealand, then ripples across the world as each country hits 10am. Birmingham starts at 10:30 due to the Gardens opening times. Anybody can get involved. Instructors will help people at all levels from complete beginner to people who just want to try it. The event includes free entry to the gardens for Tai Chi Stuff ticket holders. Call Steve on 07845 981677 or just pop along on the day. You can call the same number to enquire about Steve's classes.

Girls may begin their school life in Nursery aged 2 ½, Kindergarten at 3+ or Reception at 4+ and we have a superb purpose built Nursery with specialist play areas, ICT facilities and a dedicated reading room. First impressions Your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you and to smile with confidence is something that many people take for granted. And so they should. If you wear dentures then you just want to forget about them and get on with your life. You want dentures that do not look like dentures. And perhaps most of all, you want to be able to smile without worrying about your teeth. If you live in Harborne or Edgbaston then the good news is that there is a Clinical Dental Technician in Harborne that offers a personalised bespoke service where you are able to have a consultation with the person who will make or repair your dentures for you. Phill Morris runs the Confidents Denture Clinic on Albert Road and with his team he has been putting the smile back on people’s faces for over 30 years. Phill said: “I work directly with patients so they can discuss their needs with me. I am sure most denture wearers wish they could speak to the person making
their dentures and have adequate time to explain just how they want them to look. “The challenge in making dentures is to create a denture that doesn’t look like a denture. Working closely with the patient enables me to do that.” If you are in a hurry repairs can be made within 1 hour, while you wait. Or if it is a completely new set of dentures that you need then you are able to have them crafted by a technician to whom you can talk directly. For some advice or to make an appointment for a free initial consultation please call on :- 0121 426 3500 Confidents Denture Clinic 19 Albert Road, Harborne, B17 0AP

To tutor or not to tutor that is the question In the run up to the SATs in May we enter a critical time for year 6 children as they prepare themselves for secondary school. We spoke to a local private tutor who gives us a little advice on how to best prepare our children for this big step in their lives. Many parents in Birmingham focus closely on year five of their child’s education to help them reach their full potential in the 11+ exam in September. But year six is just as important according to Terry Greaves of Primary Plus. Terry said: “If your child is currently in year 6, by now you will know whether he or she is going to a comprehensive, grammar or public school. This is an important time in their lives, moving to secondary school is a major transition and there is still much that can be done to make sure they enter with confidence and are fully prepared. “At the end of June each comprehensive school holds an exam which helps teachers to stream the children when they start in September. After this there is very little movement between streams for the next five years. “If you want your child to enter school in one of the higher streams then the next few months provide a small window to help them reach their full potential and set them on the right path.
“At Primary Plus we offer a free initial assessment which enables us to give you a clear idea of your child’s potential. The help of a private tutor at this time can make a huge difference to your child’s experience throughout secondary school, ensuring that he or she enters at as high a level as they are capable of.” Primary Plus is located in the Jewellery Quarter with on-street parking. There are two dedicated teaching rooms that can accommodate up to six children. Teaching sessions are 90 minutes long from 5pm-6.30pm and 6.30-8pm weekdays and 11.30-1pm Saturdays. Teaching focuses on general literacy and numeracy support, SATs preparation and 11 plus preparation. For further information go to

Local Amateur Dramatics Company Escapes The Final Curtain Moorpool Players – one of Birmingham’s leading amateur dramatics companies – is set to stage its first production since their survival was secured by the purchase of the Moor Pool Hall in Harborne by the Moor Pool Heritage Trust. The Company will be staging Sue Townsend’s ‘Groping for Words’ from Wednesday 13 to Saturday 16 May 2015. Moorpool Players is a long established amateur dramatics company which has staged high quality entertainment for nearly 40 years. Receiving regular glowing reviews in the local media, the group attracts around 500 audience members to each of its two main annual productions,

Bowled over If you fancy a spot of bowling this summer then why not try out Moorpool Crown Green Bowling Club, a mixed club, over 100 years old that is welcoming new members at the moment. The club is situated in the oasis of the conservation area of Moor Pool Estate in Ravenhurst Road Harborne behind the fishing pool which has a regular visits of a heron, ducks, geese, frogs, toads and the local cats.
If you would like to visit or find out about membership call Frances on 0121 454 9886.
On occasions players have to shoo the geese off the green so they can play. And often the frogs croak away and have to be sidestepped as they make their way to the pond. This is a small club and self supporting. It raises funds holding events throughout the summer. Members have a relaxed approach to the game and the social aspect of the club is taken very seriously.

Connecting your home and garden With summer getting closer we are all itching to step out into the garden and maybe even indulge in a glass of something nice on the patio. With a growing trend in the fabulous bi-fold doors which really bring your home and garden together there is now an arguably even more exciting door to consider as an option. If you have a tendency to get excited about doors that is - which is exactly how they are at Finesse Windows in Kings Norton. The new door in question is called a New Wave door and here the experts at Finesse explain the difference. Russell Bridge, managing director at Finesse said; “Bi-Folds have been a popular choice for homeowners as they provide the open space that literally allows you to open your home out into the garden, think Nigel Slater’s garden kitchen on his TV show! “Aluminium Bi-Fold doors have advantages; they provide a sturdy and secure way to create the look many homeowners are in pursuit of. They concertina back to whichever side suits your room layout and we have installed many for very happy customers.
24
“So why choose a New Wave door? What if you could create this space but with even more added benefits? The independently operated panels mean the master door can go on the left, right or in the middle, creating a door that can be used in different ways on different days. There are no hinges on the central panes and only one handle making it pleasing to the eye. The doors slide and then turn so do not impact on space as they do not need to be stacked and pushed across to one side. “So to answer the question we are not sure whether the New Wave is ‘nobler’ than the Bi-fold but it’s an attractive alternative for a discerning customer who is looking for an innovative way to open up their home. If you are interested in New Wave doors then the best thing to do is have a look at one in action and you can see one at the Finesse showroom. And for a limited time only, Finesse is offering 20% off New Wave doors, so strike now while the iron is hot! Easter: a cross section of culture On the face of it, it’s difficult to see how a solemn Christian feast marking the death of Jesus has come to be celebrated with chocolate eggs and gaudy Easter bonnets, but the answer lies in Europe’s rich cultural heritage.. The word ‘Easter’ comes from the Anglo Saxon pagan goddess Eostre. Legend tells how Eostre found a wounded bird and transformed it into a hare so it could survive the winter. The hare found that it could still lay eggs, so it decorated these each spring and left them as offerings to the goddess. Judaism also has its own spring festival called Passover, which commemorates the escape of the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt. Hard boiled eggs are traditionally served to symbolise the rebirth of the Jewish people into freedom. When Christianity came to Europe, these earlier customs became intertwined with rituals to mark Christ’s resurrection, as well as those to mark the coming of the new season, such as spring flowers, new clothes and hatching eggs. There is even debate about whether hot cross buns originally symbolised the cross on which Jesus was crucified, or the four quarters of the moon. Over the years, and across the world, a rich variety of Easter customs has developed. In Bermuda, kites are flown to symbolise the ascension of Jesus into Heaven, many countries hold egg rolling events that may hark back to the rock being rolled from Jesus’s tomb and in Eastern Europe people throw water on each other, a tradition that has its roots in the baptism of a 10th century Polish prince.
30
However you choose to choose to celebrate Easter, whether it be with prayer, a chocolate bunny or an egg hunt, you can be sure that you are keeping alive traditions which stretch back hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

Could you take your company's tax bill lower? Millions of pounds of research and development (R&D) tax benefits are going unclaimed, either because a company does not know they are doing activities that would qualify or there is concern that advisors will cream off the bulk of any benefit they claim, according to tax specialist Emma Clewes of MHA Bloomer Heaven. If you are running a business that has stood the test of time the chances are you are undertaking R&D in order to remain competitive. Emma’s job is to assist companies in assessing whether there is qualifying R&D activity going on that can be used to either reduce their tax bill or claim a rebate from the Inland Revenue. Going forwards she aims to give companies the tools and knowledge they need to prepare their own claims enabling them to retain as much of the tax benefits as possible in the future. Emma said; “Many companies simply do not realise that what they are doing daily could qualify as R&D for tax purposes and that the cost of doing it can be reduced by thousands of pounds of tax savings. What’s more, it can be backdated by up to two years - so businesses can ease their tax burden this year using information about activity undertaken in 2013.” But Emma also has a word of warning – “If you have received R&D tax relief then be very careful when considering applying for grants. The grant money could well be swallowed up paying the tax rebate back to the Inland Revenue.” MHA Bloomer Heaven works with companies with a turnover of between £100K and upwards
of £20 million and in any one month they can recover tax savings of anywhere between £7,000 and £107,000 or more for their clients. If you are a director shareholder of a business it makes sense that you want to keep as much money in the business as possible so when you retire you reap the benefits of your hard work. If you are a director with a salary based on profit then the better the bottom line the more you will have in your back pocket. The Inland Revenue want to give this money away to help reward and support innovative businesses and if you are doing it anyway why not get the benefit?

Image as Process The new exhibition at Harborne Art Gallery opens on 10 April, showcasing the work of fine artist Peter Berry who works in a range of media and materials including painting, sculpture, drawing and print.
His work, which has always been a kind of research process, an exploration or investigation, remains concerned with testing the boundaries of convention and tradition within any particular discipline. “As a long term enthusiast of Eastern Philosophies and teacher of yoga,” he says, “I constantly return to a position which could be described as ‘minimalist.’ The constant search for ‘essence’ and its reductionist nature has lead in the past few years to a number of minimalist
sculptures and paintings, reconstructed and exhibited at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham 2004. You can view his latest paintings at Harborne Art Gallery from 10 April to 6 June.

Care home fees a prospect faced by many Have you considered putting your home into a lifetime trust to protect its value from being Tyndallwoods footer for use lost to either the payment of Inheritance Tax or care home Judy Dyke, Tyndallwoods Solicitors fees? This is a common concern but before action is taken there are important consequences to be considered.
• Family circumstances can change for example if your child trustee dies and authority is left with in-laws.
Judy Dyke, Head of Will & Trusts at Tyndallwoods Solicitors, Edgbaston highlighted just a few of the issued raised:
• In considering such possibility you must also consider the need to pay a market rent to preserve benefit gained.
• In placing an asset in Trust you give away power of choice for the future. Not only in relation to moving home, but also in connection with the choice and standard of care home that you wish to live in.
Judy explained “In short, it is essential to take professional advice when considering any such decision in relation to your home. Concerns can often be alleviated by the updating of your Will and preparation of detailed Lasting Powers of Attorney with Letters of Wishes in support.”
• Any such giving away, if deemed deliberate deprivation, can be set aside. • There are inevitably costs of creating, implementing and running any such Trust. • There may also be ongoing tax implications. 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site

Help drive away loneliness among older people Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is urgently appealing for volunteers living in Edgbaston to spare just a few hours each month to drive one or two older people to a local tea party - and enjoy a cuppa and a cake themselves! Each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver, and taken to a host’s home, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship. However, the popular group in Edgbaston is currently at risk of closure due to a lack of volunteers who are able to drive and accompany older guests in the group to and from the gatherings each month.

Edgbaston residents interested in volunteering for Contact the Elderly as a driver once a month can contact Pamela Walker, Midlands Development Officer on 0121 603 1331 or email pamela.walker@contact-the-elderly.org.uk
