Harborne Farmers Market Good food is the best way to bring people together and that is why Harborne Farmers’ Market has become such a success. Right at the heart of the community, opposite Harborne’s iconic clock tower you will find a hustling bustling market every second Saturday of the month come rain or shine. There are over 25 stalls selling fresh local farm grown produce and delicious homemade street food. So not only can you stock your larder and fridge, you can also grab a scrumptious lunch on the go while you’re at it. The choice of fresh produce includes vegetables, fruit, poultry, meat, eggs and cheese - as well as herbs, flowers and plants in pots. You will also find a great selection of English wine, local cider and cordials, sweet and savoury pies, traditionally baked bread, pizza and cakes, ‘snoggable garlic’, jams, chutneys and local honey and bees wax candles. And if you are feeling peckish you are in for a treat - the aromas will greet you before you even arrive.
8
You can choose from home made Caribbean food, Middle Eastern vegetarian food, Indian finger food, and a good old fashioned spit hog roast. Sharon Edwards, of Sharians, who will serve you delicious Caribbean food with a smile said: “There is a real growth in street food happening at the moment. We can put all our care and attention into producing just a couple of dishes from scratch, focusing on the best quality, locally sourced homegrown ingredients, so our customers get the best food at reasonable prices because we don’t have the overheads that a traditional restaurant has.”
The next market days are 10 August and 14 September – make sure you put those dates in your diary right now!

Are you thinking of extending your home? And did you know that for a short window of time the regulations have been relaxed to allow people to have twice the size conservatory? We spoke to Russell Bridge, Managing Director of local window and conservatory firm Finesse Windows about the changes. Russell told us “before these rules changed in May this year you could have a 3 metre conservatory without planning permission, whereas now that limit has been doubled to 6 metres. And have you measured how far 6 metres is? Go on, check it out!” “But these rules have only been changed for a limited time, so if you want to make the most of this golden opportunity for the conservatory of your dreams then the time is now.” “A second change to the rules means that it is now free to inform the council of your plans,” says Russell, “and then the council will write to your neighbours giving them 21 days to raise any objections. If they hear nothing then your plans will be approved and you can go ahead.” If you are interested in these changes to the planning laws you can read more about it
in Finesse Windows’ blog on their website www.finesse-windows.co.uk and you can check these changes on the council website at www.birmingham.gov.uk/pdchanges Finesse Windows is a local family run firm, established for over 30 years, based in Kings Norton. The company prides itself on building conservatories that are designed to keep heat in during the winter and repel heat in the summer. Their conservatories are built to last with steel reinforcement used to transfer roof weight effectively and they come with a ten year guarantee. Russell tells us that 60% of their work is either through repeat business or recommendation so they must be doing something right. If you would like to talk to someone about these changes, and have a free consultation with a Finesse designer then call 0121 222 9546.

Back to school In our special feature on ‘back to school’ we look at the various options for children making the jump from primary to secondary school. Most parents of school children will be thinking about uniform, shoes, PE kit, and generally getting back into the routine of school in September. But for a few there are more pressing issues to consider. Like what secondary school to choose, and whether to go comprehensive, grammar or for those who can afford it, independent. The move to secondary school is major and parents want to get it right for their kids first time. If you are facing this decision then hopefully this will help. Comprehensive School Open Days All of the comprehensive schools in the area run several open days during September so that you
can make sure you get to see all those relevant to you. They too numerous to list here but you can download a pdf document which includes them all from www.birmingham.gov.uk/secondaryschool Grammar School Open Days (full details at www.birminghamgrammarschools.org) Children take the grammar test early in September and the closing date for registration is in July. So for children going into year 5 in September these are some useful dates. For those going into year 6 – good luck!

Back to School If your child is going into year five then you know this is a very important year for them and are starting to think about which secondary school they will go to. We spoke to a local private tutor who gives us a little advice on how to best prepare our children for this next big step in their lives. Terry Greaves of Primary Plus said: “Now is the time to start thinking about secondary school places and visit school open days and decide whether you are going to aim for one of the city’s grammar schools. “These are increasingly difficult to get into with standards getting higher every year and to give your child the best chance of gaining a place at a grammar then private tutoring is a must. Primary schools do not prepare children for the 11 plus as it is not on the National Curriculum and even the brightest children need some tutoring to give them the best chance.
Primary Plus is located in the Jewellery Quarter with on-street parking. There are two dedicated teaching rooms that can accommodate up to six children. The teaching sessions are 90 minutes long and are 5pm-6.30pm and 6.308pm weekdays and 11.30-1pm Saturdays. Teaching focuses on general literacy and numeracy support, SATs preparation and 11 plus preparation.

Homework – to be or not to be? The jury is still out as to whether homework should be abolished. As a headmaster and School Inspector for 20 years (and a parent for longer), Roger Outwin-Flinders, Headmaster at Hallfield School says his advice to parents has always been that meaningful homework, and a reasonable amount, is to be commended. Roger has sat on committees over the years with children, staff and parents who would all like to see it banished. He says, “Too often in schools homework is used a ‘sledgehammer to crack a nut’. “It astonishes me to this day to know that six, seven and eight year olds are spending as much as two hours a night, five days a week (and sometimes more time at the weekend) completing meaningless homework that has no relevance to the work being carried out in class, that is not marked (or even acknowledged by) the teacher who has set it, often causing unnecessary upset at home. “Don’t punish the child and the parent for homework’s sake!” he says. “Excessive homework is often used to compensate for inadequate teaching, in my opinion! So why homework, you hastily ask? The quality of teaching and learning has improved dramatically since the 60s and 70s. Lessons are well planned,
16
and objectives for each lesson are clear and purposeful. Homework, is and should be, an extension of the work taught in the lesson. It naturally bridges the gap between school and home, and, most importantly, it starts to develop independent thinking and learning habits for secondary school, university and beyond. According to Roger, twenty minutes in year three, with some reading and up to forty minutes in year six is ample. He believes that to remove homework in schools altogether would be a retrograde step and once lost would never be retrieved. “Our children are the future. We need to prepare them and give them the skills, confidence and knowledge to be the leaders of tomorrow. My advice with regard to homework would be: Less is more,” he concludes.

Puberty – the big issue Many parents are focused on helping their children get on well at school, choosing the right secondary school and make the transition smoothly, at the same time as coming to terms with the changes to their bodies and minds. This is a topic that many teachers and parents find embarrassing and difficult to talk to children about, or perhaps they touch on the subject but fail to tackle it in depth.
“They tackled all the puberty-related issues you can think of in a refreshingly open and innocent manner – normalising them and bringing taboo topics out into the open.
Luckily there is a local theatre company that goes into schools to do just that. Balsall Heath-based Loudmouth Education and Training provides drama workshops on issues including puberty and bullying in primary schools and alcohol and teenage pregnancy in secondary schools and colleges.
“After the performance the two actors split up and ran sessions with all the children in smaller groups – separating the girls and boys – to discuss the issues that came up in the play. It was amazing to see the children eager to talk about how they felt about the play and what it meant to them.”
Editor Amy Watson went along to see them in action at Moseley School in the spring. The show was called ‘my mate fancies you’ and was performed by two actors to an audience of around 200 year 7 and 8 children.
“I think the lessons learnt during this type of activity are absolutely invaluable for the wellbeing and healthy growth of teenagers as they make their way into the world of adulthood. I just wish something like this was around when I was at school.”
“Audience participation was encouraged to a certain degree and at first there was a good deal of giggling, but these two actors had the full attention of a hall full of difficult to impress teenagers by the end of their performance,” she said.

8's too late With the new school term just around the corner, Specsavers opticians in Harborne is encouraging parents to make the most of the break and get their children’s eyes tested. The store which is situated at 136 High Street, is supporting the Specsavers ‘8’s too late’ campaign, which highlights the importance of ensuring children have their eyesight checked from a young age. In a recent report, commissioned by Specsavers and Mumsnet, it was found that 25% of parents with a child aged 3-12 are yet to have their child’s vision tested. Amit Madlani, store director at Specsavers Harborne, says: ‘Regular eye examinations are vital, as undetected problems with vision affect a child’s learning and if it is not in perfect condition it can often be mistaken for learning difficulties in young children. Around 80% of everything a child learns is through their vision, so even a minor problem with a child’s sight can mean they suffer huge setbacks in their development at school.
22
‘If parents are experiencing behavioral issues in their child at home or at school, the cause could be their eye sight, so it’s definitely worth taking them to your nearest optician.’ The store has designed a friendly and fun eye examination for kids of all ages, as well as boasting the latest pre-testing equipment. It also provides the Kids Go Free offer, which includes a free eye examination and frames in either the £64 and £85 ranges, when a NHS voucher is presented. There’s a wide range of kids glasses to choose from, including the brand new Moshi Monsters™ frames, now available at Specsavers. For more information or to book an eye examination, visit Specsavers at 136 High Street, Harborne or call 0121 426 0810.

Earlier this year Mr & Mrs Pedder had their late Victorian house restored to its former glory by The Harborne Sash Window Company
which involved the remodelling of the front of the house, the appearance of which had been ruined by 1970s ‘improvements’. The work included the re-building of a bay window which had been taken out, the construction of a monopitch roof to disguise a flat roof, the creation of a new entrance porch and the replacement of windows with sash windows. Mr Pedder said: “We were very impressed by the professionalism of Mark Jephcott and his team. While always being sensitive to our preferences and needs as clients, Mark was able to offer excellent advice and solutions to problems. The quality of the windows, door and fittings is very good and the team that did the fitting are very skilled. The company made considerable efforts to ensure that the final result met with our satisfaction. “The work has transformed the appearance of our house and restored its Victorian character. We are delighted with the outcome of the work and would have no hesitation in recommending The Harborne Sash Window Company.”

Many people buy windows and doors – often at great expense – just by looking at a corner sample provided by a salesman who comes to their home. Some people even buy windows and doors via the internet without any contact with the product they are purchasing. The Harborne Sash Window Company is a great source of information. Their knowledge and experience coupled with the showroom really helps you decide on what is right for your home.

Local law firm joins national brand Edgbaston based Davisons Solicitors has just taken the plunge to rebrand and become part of the national umbrella group Quality Solicitors. As of 1 August they are now known as Quality Solicitors Davisons across their offices in Edgbaston, Cotteridge, Weoley Castle and Four Oaks. Having spent the last 28 years building and growing their reputation and position as being the most active conveyancing law firm in the West Midlands (as confirmed by official Land Registry data), Managing Partner Gary Davison sees this move very much as a step towards formalising the quality of service they offer their clients. “Our reputation locally is built on providing a reliable efficient service and becoming part of the Quality Solicitors brand is an extension of this. It is not a franchise, rather we have joined an umbrella organisation that seeks to offer a consistency of service delivery across the country,” he said. Despite a difficult property market over recent years, Davisons has continued to grow its team and increase the amount of conveyancing work it carries out. “We have ridden the storm of a turbulent property market over the last five years, but we are now seeing some promising signs,” said Gary. “Interest rates are low and mortgages are cheaper than ever and bank lending is increasing again. We are also seeing less failed transactions – where mortgages have been approved and then withdrawn. “Generally the property market is on the up – and it’s about time too!”

Harborne Clock Tower – what's going on? For almost three years this stunning historical building, which is such a feature of the high street, has been hidden behind scaffolding and fencing. But the good news is, the end is now in sight. Phase 1 of the ambitious £5 million School Yard Scheme, is due to be completed and launched in December this year. Built in the times of Birmingham Mayor Joseph Chamberlain, the Grade II Listed Clock Tower building which stands central to the scheme, was designed originally as a school, and in more recent years was used by the council as a community centre and offices. The School Yard will feature fantastic restaurants, an artisan cookery school, Kitchen, which will be run in partnership with University College Birmingham (formerly known as Birmingham College of Food), a coffee shop, and a handful of exclusive residential apartments. With historical and architectural significance to Birmingham, the Clock Tower building stands central to the scheme. As well as becoming home to the highly regarded Prezzo and Metro Bar and Grill and Urban Coffee Company,
28
the successful home grown coffee enterprise, the development will offer a mix of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments and two town houses. A third of the residential units have already been reserved and if you are interested then you should email info@edgproperty.co.uk Phase 1 of the development will see the launch of the commercial and educational elements of the scheme, whilst the residential offering will be launched during Phase 2 planned for December 2014. Developer Neil Edginton director of EDG Property said: “This building is a real landmark not only for Harborne but for the city of Birmingham. We have embraced the heritage of the scheme at the same time as adding contemporary style. This will be an exclusive new residential address, a place to be seen!” Neil Edginton has become well known in recent years for delivering iconic projects such as The Mailbox and The Cube.

Officer looking to strike gold with WWI medals A POLICE sergeant who purchased a pair of WWI medals from an auction after recovering them from a suspect is hoping to reunite them with their rightful owner. Sergeant Steve Rice, responsible for policing in Edgbaston, originally recovered the medals from a man taken into custody at Bournville Police station back in 2007. Although an extensive search was launched at the time of their recovery, the medals remained unclaimed and eventually ended up at auction. Sergeant Rice decided to purchase both medals from the auction using his own money and has been determined to reunite them with their rightful owner ever since. Now, on the 95th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, and with the exponential rise in social media and social networking channels, the sergeant is trying one final time to find the medal’s rightful owner. Both medals, which have the same name and service number printed on the rim, are from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. The
36
first medal (silver) is a British war medal and the second (gold) is a victory medal. The medals have the name J G Davis and the service number of 5483 written along the side. Anybody with information relating to these medals is urged to contact Sergeant Rice at Rose Road police station on 101 extension 7863 6330. Sergeant Rice said: “The owner of these medals could have had these medals taken without realising at the time. “Over the years I have tried extensively to find the rightful owners as they may be of great sentimental value to somebody out there. “It would be very sad if they remained unclaimed and I am hoping that, with the introduction of social media, somebody will come forward with information.”

Are you thinking of selling a business? In our ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ series we meet Martin Dyke, Managing Director and Head of Property who gives some tips on how to maximise value and minimise cost when selling a business. Martin has over 35 years experience handling Tyndallwoods commercial property for developers and investors, acting on both sale and purchase of businesses as well as landlord and tenant work. Martin generally becomes involved when a sale or purchase has already been agreed. So here he offers some advice to those at an earlier stage of the process. It is easy to think of the big things – he points out – but sometimes the smaller things can be overlooked. And his advice to those selling – whatever the size of business – is to spend some time getting all your records in apple pie order before negotiating a deal. This includes assembly of a ‘manual’ of how to run the business, including all accounts, contracts with suppliers, staff and customers. Information assembly can be extremely time-consuming if you are disorganised and this will ultimately cost you more in fees if someone else has to do the leg work. Another area which can be overlooked is what to do when there is a leasehold property involved. Talk to the landlord early on, advises Martin, to ensure that they approve of the purchaser. 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site

Martin Dyke, Managing Director and Head of Property
It is important to be aware of the creditworthiness of the purchaser and whether their offer of a bank loan is assured. And further sticking points can include regulatory issues regarding employment, contaminated premises, and disability regulations. Martin always aims to keep costs and due diligence proportionate to the purchase price. Much of his work comes from word of mouth and repeat business which is testament to his good service and sound advice.

Bee Cause – because we need them Have you noticed bees vanishing in your garden recently? Bee numbers have been declining dramatically in recent years, which is a real problem. Bees are vital to our food supply, pollinating 75% of the food we eat and without them it would cost £1.8 billion to pollinate our crops artificially. This is something we’ll particularly notice at this time of year, when there is less food to harvest come the late summer and early autumn. The Friends of the Earth Bee Cause campaign is calling on the government to introduce a National Bee Action Plan to protect all 267 of our bee species. Such a plan would cover all the issues that bees face including habitat loss, disease and pesticides. In Birmingham Friends of the Earth has run lots of stalls and organised several events in order to raise awareness of the plight of the Bee Cause and the plight of the bees. These events included a Family Fun Day at Martineau Gardens and the There’s Something Funny in the Honey comedy gig at the Glee Club. They used the money raised from There’s Something Funny in the Honey to fund three bee-friendly projects in Birmingham.
44
There was also some good news for campaign nationally with the minister responsible for bees, Lord de Mauley, promising a National Pollinator Strategy at a recent Friends of the Earth Bee Summit. However we still need to make sure government delivers on this and helps protect our incredibly important bees. If you want to help, why not plant some beefriendly wildflowers in your back garden, or build a bee hotel for solitary bees? You can find lots of information on how to do this www.foe.co.uk/bees If you want to keep an eye on what’s going on in Birmingham check out: www.birminghamfoe.org.uk/biodiversity Or get in touch at rebecca@birminghamfoe.org.uk if you want to get involved in the Bee Cause or any of other campaigns.
