Inside the Blue Box When people think of Edgbaston Stadium the first thing that usually comes to mind is that it is the home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club. However, following the £32m redevelopment in 2011, Edgbaston Stadium has been transformed into one of the UK’s leading sporting venues, right here on our doorstep. You also may not realise the stadium now offers bright, modern and versatile facilities for conference, banqueting, Christmas parties and match day hospitality. There are seven function suites and a 1050sqm exhibition hall. All suites offer impressive views of the famous cricket pitch. The club has a vibrant social responsibility charter covering a wide variety of aspects including community and recreational cricket, environmental and recycling targets and sourcing local food produce. The permanent team of chefs at Edgbaston is headed up by the award winning Head Chef Dave Hill. Food is a real passion of Dave’s and the quality of the ingredients he and his team use is extremely important to him. Dave and his team support British sustainability, working

with farmers and growers to buy-in products that are made and grown locally and regionally. On the field, the arrival of the 3rd Test of the Ashes series to Edgbaston in 2015 will bring an influx of around 100,000 visitors to the city and the surrounding areas, which is great for local trade and helps to continue to put Birmingham on the map as a tourist destination within the UK. During June 2013, the final of the ICC Champions Trophy between England & India attracted a global TV audience of £1.2 billion, the most watched sporting event in UK history. All in all there is far more behind the blue box of Edgbaston then just cricket. For cricket information: www.edgbaston.com/tickets For conference and events: www.edgbastonstadium.com

Carry on learning Three inexpensive ways to get your child to enjoy learning during the holidays. To improve English skills take them to the local library once a week. Making a trip to the new Birmingham Central Library will make your day out special and costs next to nothing. To help them keep fit and active take them swimming. Swimming is a life skill and, because of budget cuts and other factors, we cannot afford to leave our children’s acquisition of this essential skill to the school curriculum alone. To improve mental maths and analytical skills spend time playing board games like Snakes and Ladders, Scrabble, Monopoly, and Chess. Mary Sule, private tutor T: 0784 6618 694 E: mary.maths@yahoo.com

BACK TO SCHOOL FEATURE

Back to school In our special feature on ‘back to school’ we look at the various options for children making the jump from primary to secondary school. Most parents of school children will be thinking about uniform, shoes, PE kit and generally getting back into the routine of school in September. But for a few there are more pressing issues to consider. Like what secondary school to choose and whether to go comprehensive, grammar or for those who can afford it, independent. Each of these choices are right for different types of children. The key is working out what is right for your child. The move to secondary school is major and you want to get it right for your children first time. If you are facing this decision at the moment then hopefully this will help you. Comprehensive All of the comprehensive schools in the area run several open days during September and October, so that you can make sure you get to see all those relevant to you. Some are listed on page 15 but if the one you have in mind is not there you can find them all listed online at www.birmingham.gov.uk/secondaryschool where there is also lots more helpful information.

Grammar The grammar schools prove to be a highly attractive option for many. Children take the grammar test early in September and the closing date for registration is in July. So for children going into year 5 in September these are some useful dates. For those going into year 6, good luck! For more information about grammar schools go to www.birminghamgrammarschools.org and to see the open days go to page 15. Independent And finally we are fortunate to have an excellent choice of local independent schools with outstanding results and reputation. If this is the route you are planning to take you may already have decided upon a school, but if in doubt the open days are a great way to see these schools at their best. For dates see page 15.

All Round Education All-round education and the development of the whole child are the subject of debate, and parents and school leavers alike are waking up to the fact that good grades alone are not enough if you want to stand out and compete in the professional world. Indeed, increasing numbers of parents are placing emphasis on investigating opportunities for what is commonly termed ‘personal development’ alongside more traditional indicators of academic excellence such as a school’s league table position and leavers’ university destinations. Development of character in young people is not at the cost of academic performance: instead, evidence shows it boosts exam results. The best schools embrace characterbuilding and an all-round education not as an alternative to academic attainment but as an essential adjunct of it. Dr Weeks, Headmistress at Edgbaston High School for Girls, says: “At EHS we focus on enriching the overall educational experience: not only do pupils make excellent academic progress and achieve high standards in their work, but they also benefit from a full range of stimulating physical, artistic, cultural and recreational activities.

“Much emphasis is placed on the value of participation and a strong sense of social and moral responsibility. Pupils are encouraged to work as part of a team, face new challenges and acquire new skills and this can provide characterbuilding opportunities for all which instils confidence and a sense of achievement in pupils. ”This approach, combined with excellent teaching, means that we are able to offer our pupils a truly well-rounded education.” Parents are invited to visit Edgbaston High School with their daughters at one of their forthcoming open days: Senior School Open Day Thursday 25 September 2014, 4.30 - 7.00pm Preparatory School Open Day Saturday 27 September 2014 , 9.30am - 12.00 noon

Back to School Children of all ages and abilities can benefit greatly from extra tuition. If your child is going into year five then you know this is a very important year for them and are starting to think about which secondary school they will go to. We spoke to a local private tutor who gives us a little advice on how to best prepare our children for this next big step in their lives. Terry Greaves of Primary Plus has a few words of advice:

• Start thinking about secondary school

places now, visit school open days and decide whether you are going to aim for one of the city’s grammar schools

• Be aware that standards for grammar schools are getting higher every year • You may not realise but primary schools do not prepare children for the 11 plus as it is not in the National Curriculum

• Even the brightest children need some tutoring to give them the best chance of getting into a grammar school

• If you are not thinking about grammar then starting secondary school with the best possible SATs results will set your children off to the best start

• Children are streamed in year 7 and rarely move between streams later on so being in the highest stream possible is vital.

Terry said: “At Primary Plus we offer a free initial assessment which enables us to give you a clear idea of your child’s potential. Currently we are supporting children from Y2 to Y10, each with individual goals.” “If, after the assessment, you decide to bring your child to us, we will tailor their tuition to help them improve their ability, performance and confidence.” Primary Plus is located in the Jewellery Quarter with on-street parking. There are two dedicated teaching rooms that can accommodate up to six children. Teaching sessions are 90 minutes long from 5pm-6.30pm and 6.308pm weekdays and 11.30-1pm Saturdays. Teaching focuses on literacy and numeracy support, SATs preparation and 11 plus preparation.

Two halves make more than one whole Outside London, Birmingham is believed to have the most demanding and selective 11+ system in the country. For many parents over the years, entry to selective grammar schools has become a central obsession: 10,000 children are prepared and tutored every year for a meagre 1,500 places; a figure which is soon to increase. However, despite the increase in places available, the raw statistics do not make for happy reading – 5 in 6 children will fail the 11+ examination! However, there is more to education than passing examinations. It is essential to educate the ‘whole child,’ the mind and body, through a creative, artistic and physical education within an enriched curriculum. This allows children to be challenged and to flourish, to develop the confidence to achieve - and to learn how to fail. Yvette Baker, Old Hallfieldian (1998 – 2003) London 2012 Olympian (synchronised swimming) and guest of honour at our annual Speech Day and Prize Giving, informed the guests of how her earlier failures spurred her on to achieve her greatest success. At Hallfield, we have achieved the highest academic standards in the West Midlands:-

• 91% pass rate to selective grammar schools in 2014

• 62 scholarships to independent schools in 2 years

• 6 children achieving gold medals at the National UK Maths Challenge Finals

…but, we did not achieve all of this by teaching just maths, english and study skills in preparation for the 11+ examinations. To the contrary, in addition to the usual timetable, Year 5 went on a residential trip to Cranedale, our U11 Chess Team became National IAPS Champions, the U11 Soccer Team reached the last 16 of the ISA National Finals and Year 6 performed Macbeth – all 52 of them and to the highest acclaim – with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Children leave our school, happy, well rounded and prepared for the secondary school experience, with the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed. Roger Outwin-Flinders Headmaster, Hallfield School, Edgbaston.

International Baccalaureate a great start in life The International Baccalaureate is an all round preparation for life and statistically IB students drop out of university in fewer numbers than A level students. They also get a higher percentage of first class degrees and start on higher salaries. Impressive results this year secure Bromsgrove School’s position as one of the UK’s top IB schools. The average IB student at Bromsgrove gained 560 UCAS points, which is comparable to four A* at A Level. The School’s Director of IB, Doctor Michael Thompson, said: “We are delighted with these results which reflect superbly well, not just on the students themselves, but also on all those involved in delivering IB courses, monitoring and supporting pupil progress. “Keeping up maths and languages is a sine qua non for many ambitious pupils and parents who want to be able to operate in the global market.” In 2014, local Bromsgrove student Jagraj Bhandal was one of those who scored 44 out of a possible 45, having previously also achieved A* in both maths and further maths A Levels and an A in AS physics. But Bromsgrove is much more than a place to get good grades, it prides itself on being a happy school where children of all ages can thrive both academically and outside of the classroom.

A recent parental survey supported this with over 97% saying their child was happy or very happy at school. The opportunity to develop and excel in non academic areas is of huge importance and a wide range of sports and activities are on offer every day and at the weekend. Catering for 1600 pupils aged 3 -18 on three sites (although the prep and senior schools are adjacent to each other) gives the school a unique position within the town of Bromsgrove. With over 400 boarders, including international pupils coming from 40 different nationalities, together with a strong contingent of British boarders, the school is a small global community – a place to live, work and make friends for life. Visit our Pen Museum - Birmingham's Unique Learning Centre I always love visiting the Jewellery Quarter but am particularly proud to take all visitors to The Pen Museum in Frederick Street to experience this unique institution and learning centre devoted to the history of the pen making industry. There all visitors can find out why Birmingham became the centre of the pen trade and young and old can make their own nib using the original hand presses. Visitors can use early typewriters, learn about calligraphy and see many fascinating displays relating to the pen trade. Josiah Mason played his part in the industry with a steam mill to roll the steel in 1838. With the increasing sophistication of machine production and manufacturing processes Birmingham existed as a world centre for steel pen and steel nib manufacture. More than half the steel-nib pens manufactured in the world were made in Birmingham.

It makes a great day out. Admission is free. Opening times Monday Saturday 11am to 4pm Sunday 1pm - 4pm (please check before you go). For more information or if you would like to support this wonderful charity please visit www.penroom.co.uk Judy Dyke

Have you secured your pupilage? In the first of our ‘meet the team at Bloomer Heaven’ series we say hello to Chris Barlow, Managing Director who heads up the barrister team within the firm. If you are an aspiring barrister, securing your pupilage must seem like the end of a challenging journey. But it is also the beginning of an even bigger one, your career. Chris said: “Many graduates are embarking on their chosen career at this time of year, but the main difference with a barrister is that they are self-employed from the word go, which can be daunting for some. “One of the first things that people setting up in business do is to appoint an accountant, and that is even more important for a barrister because there are a number of different rules that apply to this profession and we can advise you on these. “At Bloomer Heaven we have a specialist barrister team and currently act for many barristers in the area. Our advice to those starting out in a newly secured pupilage, or, indeed any self-employment, is to start as you mean to go on. You are likely to become very busy very quickly, and so it can be challenging, but if you get into a discipline early on to keep things in good order, this will make life much easier for you.”

Discounted rates for barristers during their pupilage Bloomer Heaven has built a strong reputation working in this area and provides services for barristers throughout their career life cycle right through to planning for retirement and inheritance tax. Barrister clients have a fixed fee basis at Bloomer Heaven and are able to benefit from discounted rates during their pupilage. Barristers’ Networking Event Bloomer Heaven is holding a barristers’ evening networking event on 10 October at Utopia, in Church St, Birmingham. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet others at all levels within the profession. Please contact Bloomer Heaven if you would like to be put on the guest list. For more information or to make an appointment you can call Chris on 0121 236 0465 Bloomer Heaven, Rutland House, 148 Edmund Street, Birmingham, B3 2FD www.bloomerheaven.co.uk 0121 236 0465

Artsmile Harborne High Street will burst into colour on 6 and 7 September with a unique arts event – Artsmile. Twenty cafes, wine bars, restaurants, shops, and pubs will become mini-art clubs where skilled and experienced artists guide visitors in making their own art.

design their own animated download, re-cycle materials to make jewellery, and much more.

Artsmile is a cultural update of the longstanding tradition of the Harborne Mile – a laddish night out at pubs in the village.

As they do these, people can buy a coffee, a pint, a glass of wine or something to eat…as Tom Jones, chair of Edgbaston Arts Contact Group (co-ordinators for Artsmile) said: “You can have your cake and draw it at Artsmile.’

Young and old, men and women, anyone, whatever their background, are invited to walk along the High Street, dip into what looks interesting and come away with their own creation or new experience… and it’s free.

Local people from Quinton, Karis Neighbourhood Centre, Focus Birmingham and The Haven Centre will exhibit their videos, pottery, paintings and embroidery alongside artworks made by Czech and Spanish visitors who will be joining in Artsmile.

People will have the chance to create a little person, transform their own image, learn how to draw something they like, join in with others to make a painting, try out a musical instrument, have a go at writing poetry, get involved in story telling,

Chef Richard Turner at his Harborne Michelin Star restaurant, Turners

Summer Mackerel Summer is here at last and it was my intention to write about English soft fruit but after much tasting we are thinking that our berries need some more sun and are not quite as they should be just yet. But as the saying goes there are plenty more fish in the sea, so we turn our attention to English mackerel. This wonderful fish has seen a Renaissance over the last few years and is a staple on most restaurant menus at the moment. Please buy English line-caught fish if possible. As well as the fishing ethics they tend to be a better quality of fish if just a little more expensive. I think one fear that people have with this type of fish is the bones, but if you ask your fishmonger to v pin them then this removes these worries. There are numerous ways of cooking this wonderful fish, pan frying, grilling or even on the BBQ. How about trying a chefy tip that will amaze all of your friends and that’s blow torching them. Sounds a little strange but at the moment this is definitely the new thing and gives a very good result as you have more control and this is the key to cooking fish well.

room temperature. Then when ready to go, brush them with oil, season and evenly blow torch them on both sides. Leave them to rest for a couple of minutes and let the residual heat finish the cooking process. Try serving them with a soy glaze and an oriental salad with toasted peanuts, or maybe some pickled beetroots and freshly grated horseradish. Let your imagination run wild and enjoy this great British fish. Local Charities Need YOU As a community magazine we will support a different charity in each of our issues from now on. The idea is to help spread the word about the good work they are doing and to put our money where our mouth is and donate 10% of our profits. For our first charity we have chosen Edward’s Trust in Edgbaston. If you would like to suggest a local charity for a future issue please get in touch with us, our contact details are on page 4. About Edward's Trust Edward's Trust was founded by a family from Birmingham in 1989. When their 7 year old son, Edward, died of a Wilm's Tumour, they found very little professional support for their loss either for themselves or for Chris, their 5 year old son. Since then, Edward's Trust has helped thousands of family members at a time of illness and loss. The Trust is unique in providing holistic care; it seeks to support the whole person, the whole family rather than just addressing the symptoms apparent following the loss. Its unique service consists of one-to-one and group counselling for adults and children, complementary therapies for adults, respite bereavement care weekends and dedicated remembrance times. 2014 is an important year as the Trust is celebrating its 25th Anniversary. A number of events have already taken place to celebrate and there are more planned. Over 60 runners are taking part in the Birmingham Half Marathon on behalf of the trust.

New Exhibition at Harborne Art Gallery Presenting the art of Mary Worrall and Susan Davies, this new stunning show opens with a preview event on 7 August from 5-8pm. The new show will run throughout August up until 20 September and features the work of two artists whose work perfectly complements the other. Mary Worrall works with watercolour, pencil and collage. She has various themes to which she returns – the sea, towers, prehistoric sites, ceramic objects and natural forms. Working part time at Harborne Library, Mary reads a great deal and is often as stimulated to produce pictures through her reading as she is by what she sees. Mary said: “Not all my pictures have a story attached but most of them have some underlying meaning reflected in the title which is often the quote from a song.” Many of her pictures have the sea or water featuring in them. Lyme Regis is her primary place of inspiration. Susan Davies is an emerging contemporary artist, working in oils and specialising in vitreous enamel painting fired on steel.

Enameling since 2013, she formerly worked as a premier artist for Halcon Days Enamels, where she developed her skill and passion for painting high quality miniatures for over 25 years. A sea and landscape painter, she uses vibrant colour to capture the feel and mood of skies, seas, rivers and occasionally the wildlife they contain. Susan said: “I am inspired by views that evoke warm memories, such as childhood holidays by the sea and walks in the woods, inviting the viewer to step into my images and enjoy the emotions I express.” Contact Details: Harborne Art Gallery Frametec, 8 Greenfield Road, Harborne, B17 OEE dominique_bleuel@yahoo.com

WW1 Choral Symphony The centenary of the First World War is being marked by a new choral symphony commissioned by Birmingham Bach Choir. The choir, who rehearse in Newman House, on the Harborne / Edgbaston border, commissioned the work from poet Euan Tait and composer Paul Spicer.

"Paul's brilliant professionalism, experience and insight was crucial in shaping the work as it now is,” says Euan. “And as you'll discover, what music he has written! It is amazing, so moving!"

Entitled Unfinished Remembering, the work reflects on the sacrifices of WW1 and is dedicated to all those who suffered as a result of the war, and subsequent conflicts.

Unfinished Remembering receives its world premiere at Symphony Hall in September, where Birmingham Bach Choir will be joined by soprano Johane Ansell, baritone William Dazeley and Orchestra Of The Swan. The programme also includes Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem and the Midlands Military Community Choir performing a new National Song composed especially for The British Legion.

Says Euan: "I felt very strongly that our generation should take this opportunity to say what this great anniversary meant to us, what the sacrifice that those sometimes very young soldiers made meant to us, how proud we were of that generation - and also what sort of society we were trying to build in their memory - just, true, courageous? I wanted to ask those questions." Moved by the sight of grieving military families, the poet discusses the "unfinished lives" of those who never returned home, the "value of being human,” and our ongoing "struggle to build a better peace." One of the UK's leading choral directors, Paul Spicer has conducted the Birmingham Bach Choir since 1992, and has dozens of recordings to his name.

"I really hope that this work has achieved its dual aim of honouring the Centenary of the First World War and also asking some tough but creative questions about our time,” says Euan. * Unfinished Remembering, 13 September 2014, Symphony Hall, Birmingham, 7.30pm. Tickets £25-£18 (£22-£10 conc), U16 £5. Box office 0121 345 0600 or see www.birmingham.bachchoir.com

A secure home and garden Keeping your home and garden secure is particularly important during the summer because thieves gain access through an open window or door in almost a third of all burglaries. Police officers have some advice about the simple and cost effective steps you can take to reduce your chances of being burgled.

“Garden security is important too... your own tools may assist a burglar who is looking for something to use to break into your home.”

How to have a safer home:

Other top tips for a safer garden, shed and garage include:

Make sure doors and windows are locked, even when at home. When you are out, leave a light on and use timer switches when you are away overnight. Use your burglar alarm if you have one. Never leave a spare key in a hiding place outside. Cancel newspapers and milk if the property is left unoccupied for a few days. Force crime reduction supervisor, Sergeant Andy Gregory, said: “Following our advice can make the difference between becoming a victim of break-in or not. Most advice is common sense. Look at your home as if you are a potential burglar, note any trouble spots and take action. “Do not leave valuables on show through windows and certainly not within reaching distance of an open window. And remember not to leave items in open porches that could be used by thieves to access your home.

44

Put away all tools and equipment. Ensure all outside sheds and store cupboards are securely locked when not in use. Bring tools inside if you do not have a shed or garage. Use suitable plants to enhance perimeter protection – such as thorny shrubs. Install external security lighting, which comes on automatically at dusk. If you have a burglar alarm, why not extend it to cover outbuildings and sheds? Secure your shed with a closed shackle padlock. Report suspicious behaviour in your neighbourhood to police by calling 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency – if a life is in danger or a crime is in progress.

Honey honey honey The delightful Birmingham Honey Show is returning to Martineau Gardens, a community garden in Edgbaston, on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September, from 10am until 4pm. Organised by Birmingham and District Beekeepers Association, this family-friendly, free event will be a chance for people to find out more about the intriguing craft of beekeeping and to immerse themselves in the world of honey. There will be opportunity to meet a queen(!), learn about the different types of bees, buy locallyproduced honey direct from the beekeepers, make candles from bees wax, see an observation hive, talk to the beekeepers, visit the resident bees of Martineau Gardens and view competition entries. A netted live demonstration area will be set up in the woodland and you’ll be able to watch bee keepers working with bees and explaining how the bee hive works and what goes on inside. A highlight of the show will be the prize-giving ceremony at 3.30pm on Sunday 14 September. Trophies and prizes are awarded for categories set to test the beekeepers’ skills in a range of entries including honey production, comb extraction, mead making, honey cake baking and candle making.

John Gale, Assistant Show Secretary said: “Come and find out why honey bees need beekeepers to survive and why bees are important to the environment. Enjoy the crafts and produce associated with this traditional craft, all in the setting of a beautiful garden.” The Gardens, though only two miles from Birmingham city centre are a green oasis that is teeming with wildlife. Have you written your will yet? In our latest ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ series we say hello to Judy Dyke Private Client Solicitor and Director leading the Tyndallwoods footer for use Private Client Team who sheds a little light on will writing. It is something that many of us know we need to do but it is so easy to put off - until it is too late in many cases. According to statistics, seven out of ten adults have not made a will. Judy, who has been with Tyndallwoods since she joined her father there in 1974, is seeing more and more wills being contested. She said: “Frequently used grounds for attack are that undue influence was applied to the testator in relation to the gifts in the will or that the testator lacked testamentary capacity at the time of making the will. “If you are going to the trouble of making a will you want to be sure that it will make life easier for your loved ones after your death. This means that it is important to have a good will drafted by a solicitor who is regulated, qualified and insured. We will also witness your signature of the document.

Judy Dyke, Director

Our file papers and attendance notes then help to make the will robust against challenge. “Your will should be reviewed every three years because different styles of will are right for people at different stages in their lives. And supporting letters of wishes are also incredibly important.’’ Judy’s final piece of advice is to have your original will held at your solicitor’s office so that it can easily be located when it is needed.

For more information or to make an appointment you can call Judy on 0121 693 2222.
