New art gallery for Harborne Havill & Travis is a brand new gallery based in Harborne, opened by local promoters Dave Travis and Gerv Havill. The gallery opened in October 2014 and has already proved a great success with locals and the wider Birmingham art-loving community. The exciting current show - by London-based Schneider - opened on 5 February 5. Schneider paints geometric art inspired by the cubic spaces in which our lives exist, and influenced by the vibrant colours and repetition of 60’s Pop Art. He paints with acrylics on wood panels to a level of painstaking perfection. Schneider is self-taught and his short career to date already includes a sell-out debut solo show at London's 2 & 4 Gallery in 2012. This gallery is not only fascinating because of the work you can view there - if you scratch below the surface of the two proprietors there is so much more than meets the eye. Dave Travis is an accomplished freelance music photographer and club promoter. His work has been published in NME, Sounds, Melody Maker, The Face, Smash Hits, Record Mirror etc. He started promoting in 1980 working with Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers, Primal Scream, Ocean Colour Scene among others.
Dave also promoted several club nights including The Click Club at Burberries in the 1980s, more recently Cheeky Monkey and Blast Off at Wolverhampton Civic Hall. Gerv Havill runs Digbeth fine art printers Mission Print. Since 1995 they have served the UK’s art and music scene with silk screen and offset litho printing. Gerv also produces the Moseley Folk Festival, Mostly Jazz Funk & Soul Festival and the Lunar Festival. Drawing on their connections and friendships in the art and music world the gallery has an exciting and diverse programme planned for the coming year. “There’s no real theme or continuity to our choices just as long as we both like the work,” says Gerv.
Opening Times: Thursday – Saturday, 12pm – 5pm. To arrange a viewing outside of these times email info@havillandtravis.com Havill & Travis Gallery, 14 Lonsdale Road, Harborne B17 9RA

A Slightly Kinked World View The new exhibition opening this week at Harborne Art Gallery is a feast for the senses. Heather Duncan, a Derbyshire based artist, is well known for her abstract and emotive landscape paintings. Her exhibition runs from 6 February to 4 April 2015 with a preview on 5 February from 5-8pm. Heather’s vibrant, richly textured landscapes exude a feeling of freedom and emanate exhilarating expression that goes deeper than a pictorial representation of the land. For Heather, the landscape is just the beginning of a fascinating process. Based on memories of a landscape and ‘worked out’ through her emotions and thought processes, her paintings not only celebrate the beauty of the landscape but also our emotional response to it. Heather said: “I take my inspirations from my everyday life, from landscape, music and poetry, and from memories. Each painting is drawn from a stream of consciousness, often starting in landscape but moving away from representation and becoming more abstract and expressive. I have a consistent starting point, in the free covering of the
white canvas with washes of colour, and it is from this beginning that I begin to read or project images intuitively – these then govern the direction of the painting; experiences and observations become filtered and developed upon the picture plane over time. “I have a deep and strong connection with the expansive open moorlands of the north of England where I spent my childhood. This openness into which I escaped both physically and emotionally is reflected in my work. I like the varied climatic qualities of a temperate landscape, the mood and the music that it creates within us and of itself.” A Slightly Kinked World View 6 February - 4 April 2015 Haborne Art Gallery at Frametec 8 Greenfield Road, Harborne, B17 OEE Opening Times: Tue - Sat from 9am to 5pm Dominique Bleuel (gallery curator) dominique_bleuel@yahoo.com

Lawn Care Tips for Spring Summer may feel like a long way off, but if you want your lawn to be at its best for all those garden parties and barbecues, then now is the time to start giving it some TLC. So here are a few handy words of advice from local lawn-care specialist Scott Harrison. The dark, damp days of winter mean that your garden may have become overrun with moss, particularly in shady areas under trees or fences. Helping your lawn fight back is a step by step process. It starts by killing the moss toprevent it from spreading. Then a heavy scarification to remove the dead material and moss from the lawn. The final two steps are over-seeding the lawn to introduce fresh grass and top it off with a good seasonal fertiliser to help the lawn recover from the major surgery! An annual fertilisation programme will then manage the lawn going forward.
Whilst this approach is perfect for small areas, the job on the whole of your lawn could prove time consuming and hard work! Calling in a lawn-care professional with specialist machinery, products and expertise can save you time and money in the long run.
If you'd like to know more please call Scott Harrison, Lawnscience North Worcestershire, on 07570 833000

Alone on Valentine's Day? Good! It’s Valentine’s Day and you’re on your own. But this is no reason to feel down. This is an opportunity to spoil and indulge the most important person in your life - YOU! While others are running around desperately trying to guess which romantic cliché will persuade their partner to put up with them for another year, you can spend time and effort pleasing yourself, indulging and spoiling the one person guaranteed never to leave you. One option is to take yourself on a classy date. Get dressed up in your smartest outfit and admire yourself in the mirror. Perhaps even pay yourself a compliment or two. Set the table with the good crockery and prepare that exotic dish you’ve been wanting to try. Who better to experiment on? You won’t hold it against yourself if it doesn’t come out quite right. Buy yourself some flowers and chocolates, and even write yourself a card listing all the wonderful things about you. After all, you know yourself better than anybody. Forget modesty and self criticism - Valentine’s Day is a time to give yourself a little love and remind yourself how special you are.
Another option is to indulge in an evening of pampering and grooming. Soak in a hot bath, pluck your eyebrows, file your nails, shave what needs shaving, moisturise everywhere - then sit back and admire the results. Afterwards you can relax with your favourite book, watch your favourite movie, play your favourite game or listen to your favourite album. Whatever makes you happiest. There’s only one person you are stuck with for life. They may not always treat you as you deserve, or keep their promises, or even like you all the time, but you can’t get by without them. So take the time to get to know yourself, learn to love yourself and make yourself happy. Alone for Valentine’s Day? Good. Now make the most of it! Alexandra Taylor

Birmingham International Piano Festival launched in Edgbaston In its inaugural year Birmingham International Piano Festival will bring some of the world's finest pianists to the city of Birmingham over three days and showcase the piano, not only as a solo instrument, but also for its role in chamber music and jazz. The festival will take place at the University of Birmingham campus in two world class concert halls from 6-8 March 2015. The festival will feature The European Union Chamber Orchestra and the Back to Basie Orchestra performing at the Elgar Concert Hall, with internationally reputed pianist Nikolai Demidenko giving the final concert on Sunday afternoon. The Barber Institute of Fine Arts will host recitals by Francesco Piemontesi, and one of the UK's most engaging chamber ensembles, the Cropper Roscoe Welsh Piano Trio, as well as a captivating free lunchtime concert with Piano4Hands, which kicks off the festival. Birmingham International Piano Festival is a new collaborative project between
20
the University of Birmingham and concert promoter, Mike Lloyd, in association with Yamaha. This three day festival has been devised by Mike Lloyd and Jo Sweet (Head of University Music and Concerts) to bring some of the world’s finest pianists to Birmingham. It offers a unique opportunity as an event that uses both the University’s Elgar Concert Hall, which opened in 2012, and the intimate Art Deco concert hall of The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, whose own international concert series has been running since 1945. Community heroes Trustees of charities are a rare breed, selfless people who give up their precious time for the benefit of others. These people are to be congratulated and thanked - but above all else they are to be equipped with the right tools for the job, according to Helen Blundell, Associate Director Charities and Not for Profit at chartered accountants MHA Bloomer Heaven. Helen said: “At this time of year many charities will have appointed new trustees to their board and those trustees may still be getting to grips with this new role. “However, many people are trustees of charities without even realising it. If you are the chair, treasurer, or secretary of a PTA for example or a scout or guide leader, a school governor of an academy, or a Parish Church Council member, then you are a trustee of a charity and this role comes with specific responsibilities for which you can be held to account. “If you are a trustee of a charity and not fully aware of your responsibilities you are not alone. We run regular seminar events to share our expertise. The Charity Commission produces plenty of online advice and guidance but as their helpline has reduced its opening hours it can sometimes be a little daunting to find where to start. Support for charities and their trustees from specialist advisers like us is increasingly relevant. “The main thing a trustee must consider is their duty of care to their charity or non profit
organisation. There are a number of key questions that they should ask themselves in regard to any aspect of activity they undertake on behalf of that organisation.” • How does this fulfil our objectives? • Is this for the public benefit? • What are the financial / repetitional risks? • What are the costs? Both money and time • Do we need professional advice? • Should we consider anything else? Save the date MHA Bloomer Heaven is holding its next trustee training events for new or existing trustees on 24 February and 19 March. Places are limited to a maximum of 10 delegates per workshop so book your place early to be guaranteed a place. The cost is £40+vat per delegate reduced to £20+vat for charities with an income of less than £100,000. For details contact Helen Blundell on helen.blundell@bloomerheaven.co.uk

Shared parental leave New changes in employment law mean that both parents can share parental leave during the first year of their baby’s life.
Tyndallwoods This is great news for young families but could be a major headache for employers according to Kate Garrett of Edgbaston law firm Tyndallwoods Solicitors. “Anyone who meets the minimum eligibility requirements - man or woman - having a baby on or after April 2015 can put in a claim for shared parental leave” said Kate. “Mothers will be able to end their maternity leave early and share the remainder of their leave with their partner. Shared parental leave does not have to be taken in a single continuous period - leave periods can be as short as a week and both parents can take it at the same time. “Companies need to have a policy in place and communicate it to their staff. Employers may also wish to draft model notification forms for employees to help them comply with the legal requirements, as well as model forms for the employer to respond to employee notices.

If the saccharine romance of Valentine’s Day has you running for the hills, then ‘Ava’s Wedding - An English Tragedy’ could be just the antidote you need. Not only is Ava Blackwell marrying a man she doesn’t love, all her friends and family are struggling with feuds, illness, money troubles, work stress and a whole raft of secrets that threaten to undermine her big day. It’s enough to put anyone off saying ‘I do.’ This brand new English opera, created by Kings Heath writing team Alexandra Taylor and Michael Wolters, has its world premiere at the Crescent Theatre at the end of February - just two weeks after the world’s most popular day for wedding proposals. Newly engaged couples should perhaps steer clear. Or maybe it’s a reassuring reminder that there’s no way their wedding day will be as traumatic as Ava’s. For soprano Eleanor Hodkinson, one of two singers playing the title role, it’s come at an especially strange time. By day she’s rehearsing as a fictional bride; by night she’s planning her own real life ceremony, due to take place in July. “I like to think of myself as being very sensible and quite blunt,” she says.
“I don’t think I’d get myself into the situation that Ava does. But although it seems ridiculous, I know these things really do happen.” “It’s crazy, and very unexpected,” says Rachel Crisp, the other performer stepping into Ava’s 1980’s meringue-style wedding dress. “But I think it’s brilliant and very well written and I’m really looking forward to bringing it to the stage.” The opera is being performed by students from the prestigious Birmingham Conservatoire, and has been double cast to give as many performers as possible a chance to showcase their considerable talents. To find out if Ava makes it to the church on time, book your tickets at www. crescent-theatre.co.uk or call the Box Office on 0121 643 5858.

What are burglars looking for in a good target? And more to the point - does your house fit the bill? According to Jason Holgate of Knight Security Systems, burglars are opportunists, they are after an easy target. And here are a few clues they look for: • no burglar alarm or a dilapidated alarm • no security lights • big bushes in front of the house • rickety old back door • easy access to the back - the majority of break-ins are at the rear • flat roof with a window Jason goes on to say that he is seeing more burglaries take place whilst the homeowner is at home. And he also sees many cases where there is an alarm but it hasn’t been
used for some time because the owners have got out of the habit or there is a minor fault they haven’t got round to sorting out. Alarm and CCTV systems have really moved with the times. You can now have an app on your phone and control lights going on and off, de-activate the alarm remotely, check CCTV cameras. You can even check when your children get home from school and link a smoke detector to the alarm. If you want to give burglars less reason to target your home then call Knight Security for a free home security check on 0121 706 5799.

Young Violinist Hits The High Notes A huge congratulations to 11 year old Bronagh Lee, a pupil of the Blue Coat School in Edgbaston, who has passed her latest music exam with a flourish. Bronagh achieved a Distinction for her Grade 8 violin exam, an extraordinary achievement for such a young musician. She started learning the violin at the age of 3 and has made fantastic progress to achieve this standard so early in her musical career. As well as leading the School orchestra, Bronagh is a member of the National Children’s Orchestra and attends the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire on Saturday mornings. Well done Bronagh!
What's so great about Pilates? Now increasingly growing in popularity, this form of exercise has been around since the 1880s. It has long been a popular method of physical exercise for dancers. Today, more people are using Pilates as part of their regular exercise programme. Sarah Grocutt has been teaching pilates for 20 years and teaches group classes, individual sessions and delivers the Diploma in Teaching Pilates.
Sarah said: “Pilates exercises focus on strengthening the ‘core postural’ muscles, by concentrating on these muscles, trunk and spinal stability can be achieved. Awareness of the natural curves of the spine before an exercise is executed is essential and when stability in the abdominals together with increased length in the spine, harmony and balance is restored to the body.” Classes are held at King Edwards Girls School on Tuesday evenings, 6.15pm, group outdoor Nordic walking and Pilates on Thursday mornings. Please contact Sarah on 0121 427 5553 or 07967 482510.

Ready Steady Bake! During March – Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice’s birthday month – people across Birmingham and Sandwell will be getting into the baking mood to help raise funds for their local hospice. Whether you bake or buy, get out your best china or buy vintage paper plates, all the money raised will help over 1,000 local families living with terminal illness. You could hold a cake sale at home, a coffee morning in your local church or a bakeoff at work. The Final Year Committee at the University of Birmingham did just that and organised a bake-off to raise money for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice. The event attracted 70 visitors and was a huge success for all involved. The cake entries were divided into the Best Show Stopper, Cupcakes, Tray bakes, Savoury, Treats and Cake categories. The group even arranged for Brendan Lynch, Great British Bake-off finalist from series three, to come along and judge the competition. Creative talents were very evident when the cakes went on display with some extremely
high quality offerings, and the bake-off raised a fantastic £150. Sarah BarberJones, Fundraising Projects Officer says: “The Final Year Committee organised a fantastic event which was greatly enjoyed by all who attended. It was great to have Brendan on board; there were so many delicious cakes for Brendan to judge, but he was very gracious and took his time to taste them all, so he could come to a fair decision. Ready Steady Bake is a fun and simple way for people to support their local hospice. All money raised from this campaign will help support local people who are dealing with terminal illness in Birmingham and Sandwell.” To get your free Ready Steady Bake pack, visit: www.birminghamhospice.org. uk/bake or speak to a member of the fundraising team on 0121 472 1191.

Hallfield School raises over £3,000 for local charity In the past year, Hallfield School in Edgbaston has raised £3,368 for Edgbaston-based bereavement charity Edward’s Trust. The school, on Church Road, raised an impressive £3,150 by holding a school fundraising day in February. Miss Woodward organised a ‘Lucky Square’ competition and a sponsored Kite Fly for Pre-Prep, and Upper school held a fair with games, competitions and balloon making. The school also held a non-uniform day, and many generous parents gave additional donations. A further £218 was raised by providing a stall for Edward’s Trust at the school Christmas fair in 2013 and 2014. Members of transition staff ran games including Name the Teddy, and sold Christmas cards, merchandise and donated items. This incredible amount could be enough to provide support for three children whose parent or sibling has died, or could provide a therapeutic retreat
for six parents whose children have died, making it an amount that will change many lives. Edward’s Trust would like to say a big thank you for the incredible support of Hallfield School. If you would like to know more about how you can support this very worthy local charity take a look at their website www.edwardstrust.org.uk You can easily make a donation yourself - just text KITE25 £5 to 70070 and you too can help make a difference.
Birmingham Hotel uses Master Chef Recipe for Top New Appointment A top Birmingham hotel has put its own twist on Master Chef The Professionals by using the popular television formula to chose its own new executive chef. Andrew Robertson and another contender were each given a black box of ingredients and two hours to prepare a starter and main course. Then Gordon Tyler, General Manager of the four star Birmingham Marriott, and Sean Kelly, the world wide hotel group's Senior Executive Chef Europe, conducted the tasting and declared Andrew, aged 43, a worthy winner.
"I prepared a selection of dishes including mussels in a cream sauce, pan fried sea bass with a spicy tomato salsa and venison pie," said Andrew who has worked in a number of top hotels as well as lecturing at a South African hotel and catering school." Gordon Tyler said he was confident that with a highly experienced and enthusiastic chef like Andrew at the catering helm, guests would have some culinary treats in store at their restaurant; West 12 which has its own entrance separate to the hotel’s main entrance and is a food destination in its own right. If you would like to dine ‘Master Chef’ style you can book a table at West 12 by calling 0121 452 1144.

Making Friends in Later Life Through bereavement, ill health, family moving away or retirement, many of us find ourselves becoming more isolated as we get older. But there are a number of ways to stay social in later life. U3A (the University of the Third Age) is a national organisation which aims to bring retired and semi-retired people together to learn new things. There’s a Harborne and Edgbaston branch which costs £24 a year to join and runs a huge variety of groups on topics as diverse as Current Affairs, Creative Writing and Family History. Visit http:// u3asites.org.uk/harborne to find out more. If you’re looking to stretch your legs, rather than your braincells, The West Midlands 40+ Walkers Group is affiliated to the Ramblers Association and aimed at people aged over 40 who want to enjoy walking at the weekend. As well as regular walks, they also organise social events and weekends away. The membership fee is £31 a year and more details can be found on their website: www.wm40plus.org.uk If you like gardening, children, animals or even all three, the Botanical Gardens offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities, such as helping with school visits, caring for the small collection of birds, reptiles and insects, serving in the shop or on reception, and of course helping maintain the beautiful gardens themselves. Further details and application

forms can be found on their website: www. birminghambotanicalgardens.org.uk/volunteers. And finally, Age UK (www.ageuk.org.uk) is the country’s largest charity dedicated to helping everyone make the most of later life. They run a huge number of support schemes to help combat lonelinesss, such as community wardens, befriending services and lunch clubs. You can call their friendly advice line on 0800 169 6565. Get your project funded by the community! The kindness of strangers is changing business... Have you ever dreamt of the day when a common need could be recognised and the resources and platform to fill that need were readily available to you? Well CrowdPatch offers exactly that. Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or simply have some exciting ideas that would benefit your community, this is the place for those innovative thoughts to become a reality. We at My Solihull have recently set up a South Birmingham and Solihull ‘patch’ on CrowdPatch to help you start a crowd funding campaign. Here are some handy pointers to bear in mind before your ideas take flight...
make little effort to learn about your campaign - people have incredibly short attention spans!
1. Fully develop your proposal, half baked campaigns won’t capture the imagination / faith of your audience.
8. Keep everybody in the loop! Communication is key to maintaining interest and holding onto your supporting community, they’ll appreciate the news whether it’s good or bad.
2. Your supporters want to be as involved as possible, introduce yourself / your team properly and keep things personal. 3. Get the wheels in motion before you start a campaign, if you don’t already have a community to tap into, try and get the attention of a handful of influential figures who might be interested in your project. 4. Social media; start hash tag trends and tap into your existing social network to gain initial support for your campaign. 5. Make a video! Visually marketing your proposal on social media allows people to
6. Make a web page. Your campaign may be a local niche or an international interest, making a web page will allow anyone who’s interested in helping promote your cause have instant access to a press release they can post as well as all your vital information. 7. Don’t ask for money immediately, people will naturally want to support your ideas once you’ve captured their interest, what you need to think about most is what you can offer them in exchange for their support. If nothing else you can always remember to thank your donors.
Ruby Watson Call or email us - we’d be happy to spend time discussing your project ideas, we’re here to help. 0121 689 0432 rubywatson@swanpublishing.org You can also visit our patch online at www. crowdpatch.co.uk/southbirmingham
