Dear Neighbours, We’re beginning with a bang this issue. The Iconic Edgbaston stadium hosting a bonfire night treat has captured our imaginations, if you're looking for grandeur we’re sure they can deliver! If it’s a quiet night out you're after, surprisingly there is a fireworks event for you, Birmingham Botanical Gardens are hosting a silent firework night. In our pages you’ll find a ghostly story about Martineau Gardens, a mystery in Edgbaston, and celebrations of light over darkness. Although Jack Frost is creeping out already that’s no excuse to be stuck indoors, but if you’d prefer to stay close to your cosy homes then you could try our three course ‘bonfire cuisine recipes in your own back garden! We hope you enjoy the magazine, if you have any suggestions or would like to get involved we would love to hear from you. Email, tweet or facebook us!

Remember, remember… If you’ve ever had to explain Bonfire Night to someone from another country, then you’ll be familiar with the bewildered expression that can accompany the description of how children are encouraged to make and burn effigies of a Catholic man who failed to blow up parliament over 400 years ago. Mention other related rituals, such as asking for ‘a penny for the guy’, eating toffee apples and setting off fireworks, and it gets even more bemusing. Like many traditions, our modern day customs are the result of decades of evolution and bear little connection to the events of 1605 that sparked them. The vast majority of people waving sparklers and tucking into baked potatoes are more concerned about whether it’s going to rain than about the religious tensions of 17th century Britain that prompted Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators to plan an attack on James I’s government. So, to celebrate this uniquely British festival and indulge in everything a modern Bonfire Night has to offer, take the family to Edgbaston Stadium on Thursday 5th November. Doors open around 5pm for an evening of live entertainment, face painting, glitter tattoos and a fairground, before the firework display later in the evening. It’s a very popular event so the organisers recommend buying tickets in advance. If you have little ones who do not like the loud bangs that come with traditional fireworks then there is a new event on the local calendar that is perfect for you. The ‘silent firework’
display at Birmingham Botanical Gardens will be a stunning laser show with dry ice and all the spectacle without the noise. Taking place on Thursday 5th November there will also be delicious food stalls on the terrace overlooking the beautiful gardens throughout the day. Or, if you’d rather wait until the weekend, head to Moseley CofE School on Saturday 7th November or Kings Heath Cricket Club on Sunday 8th November. Celebrations kick off at the school at 5.30pm and there will be a bonfire, fireworks, games and food and drink. Gates open at the cricket club at 5pm where there’ll be a fun fair, face painting, glow sticks and a range of food and drink to keep kids and adults entertained until the fireworks start. Unlike the original Gunpowder Plot, the 2015 celebrations are sure to go with a bang! by Alexandra Taylor Edgbaston Stadium: www.edgbastonstadium.com Kings Heath Cricket Club: www.pitchero. com/clubs/kingsheathcricketclub www.birminghambotanical gardens.org.uk

First impressions Your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you and to smile with confidence is something that many people take for granted. And so they should. If you wear dentures then you just want to forget about them and get on with your life. You want dentures that do not look like dentures. And perhaps most of all, you want to be able to smile without worrying about your teeth. If you live in Harborne or Edgbaston then the good news is that there is a Clinical Dental Technician in Harborne that offers a personalised bespoke service where you are able to have a consultation with the person who will make or repair your dentures for you. Phill Morris runs the Confidents Denture Clinic on Albert Road and with his team he has been putting the smile back on people’s faces for over 30 years. Phill said: “I work directly with patients so they can discuss their needs with me. I am sure most denture wearers wish they could speak to the person making
their dentures and have adequate time to explain just how they want them to look. “The challenge in making dentures is to create a denture that doesn’t look like a denture. Working closely with the patient enables me to do that.” If you are in a hurry repairs can be made within 1 hour, while you wait. Or if it is a completely new set of dentures that you need then you are able to have them crafted by a technician to whom you can talk directly.
For some advice or to make an appointment for a free initial consultation please call on :0121 426 3500 Confidents Denture Clinic 19 Albert Road, Harborne, B17 0AP

Mystery in Edgbaston As part of a new development at a historic site in Edgbaston, a number of artefacts have been discovered, including a plaque titled ‘The Chains’. Audley Retirement, who are building a luxury retirement village on the grounds of the Royal School for the Deaf, Church Road, have had little luck in uncovering much detail about the history of the original building, and so this plaque remains a mystery. Does this plaque mean anything to you? If so, the people at Audley would love to hear from you - please email them on info@audleyretirement.co.uk if you can shed any light on this mystery. When completed the retirement village will be called St George’s Place and provide 95 luxury
retirement properties, with beautiful and secure living private facilities, a restaurant, lounge, bar & bistro as well as a library, swimming pool, gym and fitness suite.

Spirited Away October 31st. Halloween. You’re walking home. It’s dark. You hear a noise behind you and spin round, heart thumping. There’s nothing but the empty street, a crisp packet blowing along the gutter. You pick it up and stuff it in a nearby bin, laughing at your own jumpiness. Halloween is just an excuse for a party, a cultural tradition born out of Pagan superstition and modified by Christian mythology. It’s not real. It’s just another night. But then you catch a movement out of the corner of your eye. Something dark and shadowy which disappears down a side road before you get a proper look. Your first instinct is to run, to seek the warmth and security of home. But, no! You refuse to give in to irrational fear. Humming your favourite tune under your breath for comfort you decide to follow. You find yourself at the entrance to Martineau Gardens, a large sign announcing their Halloween Story Night. Did the creature head in here? Paying the £5 adult entry fee you slip inside, looking around for the ghostly figure. Ignoring the hot soup and other refreshments you join one of the groups of
visitors heading off on a ghost walk round the gardens, listening to tales of spirits and fairy-folk in the flickering firelight. There’s no sign of the mysterious apparition. But then you see it again, leaving the gardens. You pursue it relentlessly, turning corner after corner until you arrive at the Botanical Gardens. They too are having a Spooky Stories event, with visitors invited to dress up in their spookiest costume and carry a latern to light the way. With all these spine-chilling aparitions you have no chance of finding the shadowy creature you are following so you join in the spooky fun.

Get gourmet in the Garden! This is a dinner party worthy of cavemen and royalty alike. A delicious three course meal over the campfire; warm treats perfect for cold winter nights. So huddle up around the fire and get ready to get some serious use out of kebab sticks. Dough Twists with oil and vinegar Ingredients: • • • •
500g self raising flour 3 tablespoons of sugar 300-500ml of water oil & vinegar for dipping
Start by mixing both dry ingredients in a large bowl. Then add 200-300ml of water and mix well. Keep adding small amounts of water until it binds into one big lump, kneed it with your hands until it’s a dough and then divide it up and wrap it around kebab sticks and you’re ready to get cooking! Also very tasty with some poppy seeds thrown on. Serve with oil and vinegar for dipping.
Lamb Kebabs with mint pesto and baked potatoes Ingredients: • • • • • • •
Kebabs 1/2 lb fresh ground lamb 1/2 cup chopped parsley 2 eggs Juice of 1 lemon 1/2 onion (minced) 1 tsp ground black pepper
• 1 tsp ground coriander • 1 tsp paprika • 12 skewers Mint Pesto • • • • • • • •
1/2 cup mint leaves 1/2 cup parsley 1/2 medium onion 2/3 cup pine nuts 3 garlic cloves 1/4 - 1/2 cup olive oil 2 tsp lemon zest 1 tsp sea salt
Potatoes In a food processor, combine all of the mint pesto ingredients. Add more oil if need be. Blend until smooth. Refrigerate. In a separate bowl, combine all ingredients for the kebabs. Divide the mixture into 12 sections and form each section around the kebab skewers. Stab potatoes a few times with a fork, smear with butter and wrap in tin foil, bury in the hot coals for 60mins. Grill the skewers until cooked. Serve and top with pesto. Marshmallows and warm Nutella Ingredients: • 1 bag marshmallows • 1 jar Nutella Thread the marshmallows onto kebab skewers and cook them over the fire. Warm up some Nutella in a pan over the fire and use as a dipping sauce. Enjoy!

Under the stairs Harry Potter has given the under stairs area a pretty bad name, and honestly with a little bit of creativity he could have had the best ‘room’ in the house. There’s a whole world of under stairs cupboards out there, from the modest to the super extravagant, and we’ve chosen three that suit the three main residents of the house - you won’t be complaining like that ‘ungrateful Potter’ when you see them!
Top dog In the damp and chilly British weather an outdoor kennel seems a bit cruel, so how about investing in a few hooks for the coats and give the pooch a cosy little cubby hole. Putting a gate on the doorframe could be really handy too for when you’re trying to get some vacuuming done without a boisterous furry companion.
The big kids Quite extravagant and probably unnecessary the hidden-room-behind-the-bookcase can be an outlet for so many personas you’ve been itching to let out. Firstly there’s the double agent/spy, a deadly smooth talker with a contingency plan in every situation, he’d call it the ‘panic-room’ but you’d never see him doing any such thing! Then there’s the evil genius who disappears into the wall to cast spells and escape from the gremlins (aka the family) for a while, she’d call it the ‘secret lair’. Whatever takes your fancy. by Ruby Watson
Kid’s play-house At this time of year the chance of the wendyhouse in the garden being used is slim to none, so bring the fun indoors. You know the little ones will get more excitement out of a cupboard than your hats and scarves will, judging by this photo the sky is really the limit with cupboard renovation. Throw in a few fairy lights and you have the setting of many magical adventures. Please mention My Harborne & Edgbaston when responding to adverts

The Finesse £10,000 window giveaway Three community buildings in south Birmingham are in with a chance to have a £10,000 window makeover for free thanks to a local window company with a big heart.
The three buildings are Rowheath Pavillion, Birmingham Samaritans and Woodcock Hill Primary School and the winner will be the one who received the most votes via Finesse Windows’ Facebook page during August and September. You can see more information about each cause a www.finesse-windows.co.uk/theletterbox/ finesse-worthy-cause-finalists Finesse Managing Director Russell Bridge said: “As a family business we feel strongly that all companies should aim to give back to their local communities wherever possible - after all, as a long established ‘local company’ we wouldn’t exist without our local community. “We recently decided that it would be a great idea to offer our help to a local ‘worthy cause’. There are so many fantastic groups in our area that need and deserve our support. In May 2015 we started this latest project by enlisting the help of our fantastic customers to nominate and select three
excellent causes that felt they could benefit the most from having new windows installed. “In October we will count the votes and announce the winner - with the work to commence during the Winter. We would like to thank the hundreds of voters for their votes and kind words of support. “Since we began trading in 1981 we have always tried to help out wherever we can. This philosophy is evident in simple things we do every day but also in a couple of the bigger projects we have undertaken in recent years. These include raising over £2,500 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association and installing over £12,000 of windows for a local family whose son is suffering with Leukaemia. You can read about these at: www.finesse-windows.co.uk/theletterbox/ window-donation-to-warm-the-heart/.”
Finesse Windows plan to replicate their ‘Worthy Cause’ project on an annual basis. If you know a community organisation who deserve a nomination for their ‘Worthy Cause 2016’ project then please let them know via their Facebook page.

What A Hoot! For two months this summer Birmingham was invaded by dozens of owls, spreading their wings as far afield as Sutton Coldfield, Winson Green and Bournville. ‘The Big Hoot’ involved 89 fibreglass sculptures, each one decorated by a different artist, and placed all over the city for everyone to discover and enjoy. Three of the owls flew all the way to Kings Heath. One landed in Kings Heath Park, one in the Village Square and one outside the library. The latter was painted by local artist Karoline Rerrie, who lives just down the road in Selly Park. She was delighted that her owl ended up so close to home.
a degree in Graphic Design at what was then the University of Central England (now Birmingham City University). She applied to The Big Hoot in January, enticed by the large scale of the project and its ambition to engage the community. She’s been delighted by the positive response. “It’s been really good to be able to contribute to such an ambitious, Birmingham-based project, and one that involves such a range of artists and styles.” The owls will be auctioned in October to raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. When I ask Karoline if she’ll be putting in a bid for her owl, she smiles. “I suspect it’ll be too expensive, but if he doesn’t get sold, I’ll happily adopt him. There’s a space in my garden that would be perfect.” by Alexandra Taylor
Karoline Rerrie’s 'Owl of Athena’
“It took me two weeks to paint him,” she says, over tea and cake at Maison Mayci. “I did feel quite attached to him by the time I’d finished. I don’t know how they decided which owls went where, but I didn’t find out where he was until the map went up online.” Originally from Northamptonshire, Karoline settled in Birmingham after completing

Poppy Power Armistice Day on 11th November will mark 96 years since the end of the First World War. Red poppies will abound in the run up to Remembrance Sunday, but how many of us know how the tradition began and that other colours are available? In 1915, John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Canadian armed forces, was so deeply moved by what he saw on the front line that he wrote the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. It begins:
“In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row,”
War Movement put forward the idea of white poppies. Those who wear them argue that the red poppy is militaristic, political and divisive, particularly in Northern Ireland where it is worn mainly by the Unionist community. White poppies sold in the UK today raise funds for the Peace Pledge Union, whose work is primarily educational.
Three years later, Moina Michael, an American academic, wrote a poem in reply, ‘We Shall Keep the Faith’, in which she promised to always wear a poppy as a symbol of remembrance. She went on to promote the idea of selling silk poppies to raise funds to assist disabled veterans, a practice taken up by the American Legion Auxiliary in 1921. Red poppies sold in the UK today raise money for the Royal British Legion, which offers support to current and former military personnel and their families.
In addition, animal rights group Animal Aid has issued a purple poppy as a reminder that animals have been, and continue to be, victims of war. The intention is to raise awareness and to raise money for the organisation’s campaigns against animal abuse.
However, in 1926, just five years after the first red poppies were sold, the No More

So this Remembrance Day, on 8th November, choose your poppy and wear it with pride, whichever colour it happens to be. Lest we forget.

Back to Basics Birmingham’s history wasn’t made by kings and queens. Its success was built on the backs of the hard working men and women who ground out a living in its factories and workshops. Two books recently released by Fonthill Media celebrate and document the experiences of everyday Brummies living ordinary lives in extraordinary times. ‘A Birmingham Boyhood 1923-40’ takes a nostalgic view of interwar Birmingham, told through the lens of a boyhood memoir. Author Eric Armstrong was raised in Birmingham and has written fifteen books on the social history of the city. This latest one follows his own boyhood journey of self-discovery, set against a background of family upheavals, the general strike of 1926 and increasingly disturbing events in mainland Europe. The book also includes nearly 200 rare and unpublished photographs from the era. Mac Joseph is a guide at that most working class of National Trust properties, the Birmingham Back-to-Backs. He and Ted Rudge, an expert on West Midlands History, have
together produced ‘Birmingham: We Lived Back to Back’, which charts the social history of this once common housing which has now almost entirely vanished from our towns and cities. For some, it was a harsh life, cramped and unhealthy, yet these confined communities were also a hub of life-long friendships and close-knit families. What was it like to live in a house with one bedroom and no running water? How did eleven families share two toilets? The rise and fall of the back-to-back provides a fascinating insight into the everyday lives of the working men and women who made Birmingham the city it is today.

Battle of wills The widow of Robin Williams is currently locked in a bitter legal dispute with the late actor’s children over his estate. According to Kate Garrett of Tyndallwoods Solicitors, the number of people disputing wills is increasing. This is due to a number of factors including more complicated family structures. Kate says “Many people may be concerned to discover that no matter how much thought has gone into both the content andTyndallwoods the drafting of their will, the law will permit a cart and horse to be driven through it.” “On the one hand, people are relying more on inheritance to ease their own financial problems. Disgruntled beneficiaries are now more likely to question the lack of monies left to them or conversely, the disproportionate amount left to other beneficiaries. However, on the other hand, it may not be about the money but the principle. For these people, pursuing such a dispute will ensure that if they can’t get their hands on the money, no-one else can either. However, principles can be expensive and can soon eat into any inheritance.” Wills can be challenged on 6 grounds ranging from whether the will is actually valid (for example, is the Will in writing and signed by the person making the Will in the presence of two or more witnesses) to whether the Testator had testamentary capacity, understanding the content and implications of his will. Claims can also be brought under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and
footer for use Robin Williams
Dependants) Act 1975. This Act provides a route by which certain classes of family members are entitled to make a claim against the estate of someone who has died if the will does not make sufficient financial provision for them.
If you would like to know more about this you can read the full ‘Disputing a Will’ blog on Tyndallwoods’ website at www.tyndallwoods.co.uk/blog/ posted on 18 June 2015. Or if you have more specific concerns about someone’s will, you can contact Kate Garrett at Tyndallwoods Solicitors on 0121 693 2222.

Diwali: Lighting up the Sky If you’re a fan of fireworks, then November is the month for you. The pops, bangs and lights in the sky usually start well before Bonfire Night, often featuring at Halloween events from the end of October. But it’s another festival that will keep them going long after Guy Fawkes has been reduced to ashes - Diwali, the festival of lights. Diwali is a five-day religious celebration enjoyed by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains, of whom there are over 50 thousand in Birmingham. It coincides with the Hindu new year, and celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil. The date is linked to the Hindu lunar calendar, so changes from year to year. This year it starts on 11th November. The festival is one of the most significant in Indian culture and is celebrated for slightly different reasons by each religion. One of the most popular stories told is the legendary return of King Rama and his wife Sita from exile and imprisonment in the 15th century. On their arrival in their kingdom, the local people
greeted them with celebratory fireworks, an event which is recreated every Diwali by millions of displays across the world. Other traditional rituals include prayers, the lighting of candles and decorating houses with rangoli - patterns made on the floor with coloured rice or powder. Giving food and gifts to those in need is also encouraged, and the theme of new beginnings is marked by giving the house a thorough clean and wearing new clothes. Birmingham’s main Diwali event is taking place at New Bingley Hall in Hockley on Sunday 16th November and will feature songs and dancing, face painting and mask making, stalls and competitions. Go along from 2pm, or see if you can spot the fireworks from your own back garden. by Alexandra Taylor

The Other Half Best selling crime fiction writer Mark Billingham shares his thoughts on collaborating with highly acclaimed country band My Darling Clementine to bring audiences a story of love, loss and murder told in words and music. The Other Half combines my two great passions – crime fiction and country music. We’ve been touring the country to amazing responses from audiences and it’s hugely satisfying to hear people who’ve seen it, or listened to the album, say how much they’ve enjoyed the simple pleasure of being “told a story”. The event for Birmingham Literary Festival on 15 October is one I’m really looking forward to, because it is even more exciting to bring
40
the show to my home town. The fact that Michael and Lou live in Moseley, where I grew up, cemented our friendship and working relationship early on, so to perform to a local audience will make this an extra-special show. We cannot wait to bring the heartache to Brum! Mark Billingham
