Martineau Gardens . . . Welcome to the oasis of calm It seems daft to rush off to another country as soon as the weather starts to perk up here, don’t you think? Especially with glorious little sanctuaries like Martineau Gardens in which to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Well if you’ve decided to give your wallet a bit of a rest this summer there’s a whole host of adventures on your doorstep just waiting for you to get involved. This year will be the fourth annual Storytelling Festival at Martineau Gardens. On 20 June you will be treated to a family friendly day of storytelling performances, story trails, live music, dance, stalls and crafts for children with delicious food. Wednesday 1 July Folksy Theatre bring their exhilarating outdoor performance of ‘Wind in the Willows’ - join ratty, mole, toad and badger on their adventures. This open-air production is filled with audience interaction, high energy performances and outright silliness! Folksy Theatre are also bringing their production of Hamlet to Martineau Gardens on 6 and 7 August where you can join the prince of Denmark as he fights his inner demons and seeks to avenge his late father - in true Folksy fashion.

A window is just a window You could be forgiven for believing that this is true; white, plastic, contains glass. You could also be forgiven for assuming that double glazing companies are all much of a muchness, giving high quotations then slashing the price with pushy salesmen who outstay their welcome. At Finesse you will find a vastly different type of product and a very different type of company, but really the only way to know if they are for you is to make a visit to the Finesse Factory Showroom.
The factory is open too so you can actually see where your windows and doors will be made, see the fabricators at work and learn about the manufacturing process in as much detail as you like.
Finesse has just celebrated its 34th birthday and as a family the management team has spent the last three decades perfecting their products and service to achieve an oldfashioned British company in the way they do business at the same time as offering industry leading products and contemporary design.
Managing Director Russell Bridge said: “When you meet the Finesse family you will see that we do business in a more civilised way, listening to your requirements, drawing them up on computer, printing your quotation with a ‘real’ price, and leaving you alone to have a think. Then out of courtesy we will check to see if you would like to proceed. It’s as simple as that. We really would love to show you around and prove to you that a window is definitely not just a window!”
And what’s more - they have a greatly kept secret – their factory showroom! A little oasis tucked away on the Kings Norton Business Estate. Everyone who pops in to see them is always pleasantly surprised. You can step inside a lovely orangery Livin’ Room fitted with the stunning New Wave Door, and see a large range of Palladio doors and of course their own range of windows and doors which they would love to demonstrate to you.

Former Radio 1 DJ Andy Peebles pictured here with the great Ian Botham
With the Ashes due to return to Edgbaston in July Andy Peebles takes a walk down memory lane Tom Dollery was captain of Warwickshire when I was a schoolboy in the 1950s. My uncle lived in Acocks Green and I could never have dreamt that I would spend so much time at Edgbaston in the 1980s 90s. I witnessed Dennis Amiss collect his 100th century and gloried in the exquisite skills of Allan Donald and Brian Lara whilst enjoying local lads like Geoff Humpage and great characters like Gladstone Small. The ground today is a very different place, modernised and thoroughly professional but it has witnessed great moments. David Lloyd’s double century against India, Colin Cowdrey & Peter May in 1957 taking on the West Indian spin twins, Ramadin and Valentine. Not to mention the bespectacled MJK Smith, the last man to play rugby and cricket for England. All part of the rich tapestry of Warwickshire cricket. When Eric Hollies dismissed Don Bradman at the Oval in 1948 it was a Warwickshire player who deprived ‘The Don’ of a Test average of 100. Players of that era could only have dreamt of their team being called the Birmingham Bears!
My favourite Warwickshire story took place at Old Trafford. My fellow commentator liked a flutter and availed himself of generous odds on Neil Smith (son of MJK Smith) top scoring. This Neil did - only to see Graham Lloyd of Lancashire beat his total off the last ball of the match! Enjoy your cricket. Andy Peebles Andy Peebles covered cricket for the BBC for 27 years. He was at Radio One for 13 years and was the last English broadcaster to interview John Lennon, two days before his death.

A flock of finely-feathered characters... ‌will be taking up residence at the Harborne Gallery at Frametec in Greenfield Road, Harborne from 14 August - 10 October 2015 thanks to the very generous support from Judy Dyke of Tyndallwoods Solicitors. Local pet portrait artist Ali McQuail has teamed up with St Ives-based textile artist Jane Gray for an exhibition devoted to the not-so-humble hen! Cornish artist Jane upcycles pre-used textiles to create stunningly vibrant, quirky works featuring chickens, which are also featured on cushions and mugs.

Ali McQuail, who paints bespoke pet portraits, has been inspired by her own ex-battery hens to paint a new collection showcasing their beauty and individuality. The artists, as avid HENthusiasts are passionate about the welfare of hens and are aiming to highlight the plight of commercial birds used for egg production and then discarded at the end of their brief careers as waste. Jane’s use of recycled fabrics to create her charming chickens perfectly reflects the new life ex-battery hens can have when adopted by people as pets. Keeping chickens is on

Three exciting projects that will add value to your house Which project brings the most value to the table you ask? 1. The top spot very fittingly goes to the attic conversion. An attic conversion can add a whopping 25% extra value onto your house, and the best part is you can get really creative with it. With a project this size you need it to be something special, if you lose interest it’ll never get finished so get your creative juices flowing before you land on the final idea. You can have some real fun with this one - what about a home-cinema? 2. Close runner up is the kitchen conversion adding a still impressive (approximate) 15% extra value onto your house. The trick with this one is to keep it relatively simple, in the world of kitchen conversions that doesn’t mean to say cheap, just not outrageous! It’s so very tempting to create the kitchen to die for but buyers won’t be interested in paying more than a certain amount extra for it. 3. While adding in a new bathroom might not be the most exciting idea, it just might be the one to revolutionise family life. No more waiting hours to go to the loo while mum has a lovely long bath, plus it captures the special attention of buyers, raising the value of the house by approximately 10%.
So ruminate, ponder and maybe even do a little musing to find that perfect project, it’ll be well worth it when your house value is soaring. Ruby Watson

Luxury Retirement Village Coming To Edgbaston A stunning new addition to picturesque Edgbaston is planned to open in autumn 2016. Former MP Gisela Stuart officially 'broke ground' on the construction site for Audley St George's Place in the spring. The luxury retirement village for over 55s will offer a high quality mix of over 95 apartments and cottages. Owners will have access to Audley Club, offering facilities to rival boutique hotels including a bistro, pool, spa and restaurant. Set on the grounds of the Royal School for the Deaf, the historic property will be restored to create Audley Club - accessible to owners and the neighbouring community.
14
The development to be completed in two phases by 2016 and early 2017 has already seen 40 percent of phase 1 sold. It is set to create 40 new jobs ranging from restaurant staff and chefs to gardeners.

Running your business from home? More people than ever before are running their own business from home - a great way to achieve a good work life balance and be in control of your own destiny. There are many tax benefits to doing so that you might find refreshing. Clare Brown from chartered accountants MHA Bloomer Heaven explains further. For example, did you know that you can claim a proportion of your household costs as a business expense if you use a room in your home to work from? These costs include council tax, heating and lighting, water rates, telephone and broadband and the interest on your mortgage. It is best to seek professional advice regarding the proportion claimed as there could be capital gains tax implications. There are a number of methods for calculating the allowable proportion of the expenses, including a new simple solution to claiming household expenses for sole traders - they are now able to claim a flat rate based on the hours of business use, starting at £10 per month for 25-50 hours. If you are considering starting up a business from home Clare has a few words of advice:
•
Inform your mortgage provider
•
Inform the local council if planning or a license is required
•
Inform your insurance company with particular reference to business assets like computers
If you would like some further advice on setting up or running your own business as a sole trader contact: Clare Brown clare.brown@bloomerheaven.co.uk MHA Bloomer Heaven
•
Inform and register with HMRC - annual tax returns and accounts will be required
•
Begin keeping records of business receipts and expenses
Birmingham, B3 2FD
You may wish to appoint an accountant to carry out some of the administrative burden and ensure you receive the correct advice - this could even save you money in the long run

Get the best out of your lawn this summer Aeration is perfect for giving your lawn a boost this Summer. It reduces soil compaction which leads to an increase in water and air penetration and the more efficient uptake of nutrients, giving you a stronger healthier lawn!
Hollow tine aeration is a process where a machine pulls thousands of cylindrical plugs the size of your little finger out of the lawn. This enables the water from rain or a sprinkler to get right down to the roots of your grass where it is needed most - and has the added benefit of making fertilisation more effective. There are various DIY methods such as hand held aerators or using a garden fork but nothing works as well as a 90kg machine, and a bit of hard work raking up the resulting cores of soil.
If you’d like some help with aerating your lawn then please call Scott Harrison,

Revolutionary underwater treadmill H2O Physio has recently opened a hydrotherapy suite in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. The UK’s first private clinic to have the underwater treadmill, this new centre follows hot on the heels of the flagship facilities near Wolverhampton. The water-based therapy provides all the advantages of effective exercise without putting stress on joints, so it’s ideal for people with any mobility issues, or recovering from an injury or operation.
Davinder has successfully treated patients for arthritis, back problems, post orthopaedic surgery, MS, stroke recovery, obesity and more. Bal suffered with back pain for 20 years, caused by the heavy lifting his work demanded. Keen to avoid surgery, he used the treadmill to strengthen the stabilising muscles of his spine, and build core strength. "Back pain really affected my quality of life – even forcing me to stop working. Finally I've found a great way to get better and I’ve even gone back to work", Bal comments.
Physiotherapist, Davinder Chatha, who heads up the organisation says: "Hydrotherapy like this was previously only available for professional but it can1help many 11:56 H2O Back Painsportspeople advert 135x97_Layout 29/04/2015 people suffering from debilitating conditions.”

Nourishment for the spirit Moseley has drawn artistic, wonderfully talented people like a moth to a flame for over a century, and now we bathe in the cultural riches for which they paved the way. Mostly Jazz, Funk and Soul Festival is taking place over the weekend of 10-12 July this year. In the enchanting setting of Moseley park, it is a place to soak in the unique atmosphere of our delightful little village and welcome in talent from all over the world. For a Moseley local, it’s a chance to see all of the familiar faces, and feel the closeness of neighbourly camaraderie, a notion all but lost in modern city life. For those coming from further afield, the festival becomes a community of its own, you’ll feel right at home. Stepping into Mostly Jazz you can feel that you’re in a special place, there is a carefree frivolity in
the air, the spirit of the festival is inviting you into its warm embrace. Artists gracing the stage this year include the timelessly brilliant Sugarhill Gang, curator of Mostly Jazz Craig Charles on the decks, the smooth, luxurious sounds of Gregory Porter, and much more! In short, an absolute treat for the ears, and much needed nourishment for the spirit. Ruby Watson For the full line up and ticket information go to:

- Avoid using your tumble dryer: During the winter months your tumble dryer will have been working overtime. Use the summer

- Boiler servicing: With the weather being warmer, now is a great opportunity to give your boiler a health check. Doing so now will ensure that when the winter months arrive you will have reduced the possibility of hassle and costs from a breakdown.

From Webb Ellis in 1823 to a World Cup Trophy Tour in 2015 Excerpt from: “From a New Boy” written by Rupert Brooke in 1904... When first I played I nearly died. The bitter memory still rankles – They formed a scrum with me inside! Some kicked the ball and some my ankles. I did not like the game at all, Yet, after all the harm they’d done me, Whenever I came near the ball, They knocked me down and stood upon me. As many tourists visit the place where The Game began, preparations build to celebrate the Rugby World Cup 2015 and the matches in Birmingham on September 26th and 27th at the Aston Villa Ground. In 1823, when William Webb Ellis with a fine disregard for the rules of football, picked up and ran with the ball trying to evade opposition players, few would know the game would grow to become a popular worldwide sport. In Webb Ellis’s day players at Rugby School wore the school garb of the period – linen shirt with emblem of the school house they were in, breeches and long socks with formal shoes. Velvet caps and tassels signified their school house. With The Game’s popularity booming at the moment especially after the riveting finishing
day of the Six Nations Championship, we look forward to welcoming the RWC’s magnificent Trophy which is touring the area supported by Birmingham Rugby Partnership on the following dates: July 18 North Midlands North Midlands North Midlands

First impressions Your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you and to smile with confidence is something that many people take for granted. And so they should. If you wear dentures then you just want to forget about them and get on with your life. You want dentures that do not look like dentures. And perhaps most of all, you want to be able to smile without worrying about your teeth. If you live in Harborne or Edgbaston then the good news is that there is a Clinical Dental Technician in Harborne that offers a personalised bespoke service where you are able to have a consultation with the person who will make or repair your dentures for you. Phill Morris runs the Confidents Denture Clinic on Albert Road and with his team he has been putting the smile back on people’s faces for over 30 years. Phill said: “I work directly with patients so they can discuss their needs with me. I am sure most denture wearers wish they could speak to the person making
their dentures and have adequate time to explain just how they want them to look. “The challenge in making dentures is to create a denture that doesn’t look like a denture. Working closely with the patient enables me to do that.” If you are in a hurry repairs can be made within 1 hour, while you wait. Or if it is a completely new set of dentures that you need then you are able to have them crafted by a technician to whom you can talk directly. For some advice or to make an appointment for a free initial consultation please call on :- 0121 426 3500 Confidents Denture Clinic 19 Albert Road, Harborne, B17 0AP

Summer party wonderland If you’re looking for fun garden party ideas this summer we’ve got it covered Moroccan Movie Magic Picture this; Moroccan throws on the lawn, big slouchy pillows to relax on, twinkly fairy lights in the trees and an exclusive screening of an old classic movie on a big projector screen. Once you’ve kitted out the garden it’s nice to be able to get the maximum use out of all the effort you’ve made so this could easily be a regular occasion over the hottest summer nights. If you already own a projector that’s perfect but if you don’t, you could always hire one fairly cheaply. Mad Hatter's Tea party This one’s a classic, if you’re a fan of tea parties there’s no better theme... and yes, mad hats are compulsory! It’s the opportunity to get out your teapots and every cup and saucer you can find, preferably all different shapes and sizes, the madder the better. To create the ambience you’ll need bunting, brightly coloured napkins, plates, tablecloth, and copious amounts of tea and cake. Clocks and playing cards will also make perfect decorations.
Dancing In The Moonlight Dancing is the main event so you’ll need a decent sound system, if you don’t trust the fickle British weather with your favourite speakers then hiring a gazebo or small marquee to house them might be the way to go. Scatter a few chairs around… but not enough for everyone, we want them dancing. Candles on each little table add to the romance of the theme while glow in the dark rocks add a funky twist to the decor and get people in the party spirit. We hope you’re inspired! Tweet or Facebook us with your summer party ideas!

Going the extra mile A good service from your wills and probate solicitor is something you should expect. And is something that Judy Dyke from Tyndallwoods is positively evangelical about. But what really makes her tick is the satisfaction she gets from going the extra mile.
Judy Dyke
Tyndallwoods footer for use
Actually, the extra three miles.
The first mile she goes is to ensure that the maximum monetary value is gained from the assets in an estate. Working with specialist valuers who have the knowledge and the honesty to identify assets that may have a surprising cash value. Mile two is to honour all of the possessions of the deceased even if they don’t command a high monetary value, remembering that they will have had a sentimental value. And this is where our wealth of charity shops comes into its own - ensuring that the full life of things is realised at the same time as providing a valuable resource to local people and much needed funds to local charities. And the hat-trick mile is in the support of people doing great things in the world of up-cycling. Take artist Jane Gray’s chickens for example. They are made from donated clothing, many of which articles coming via relatives who have lost loved ones. And this neatly explains why we have a picture of 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site
Judy the Chicken to illustrate this story. Judy - named after Judy Dyke - is made from the deconstruction of beautiful donated clothing reconstructed in a form of up cycled art. You can see her creator’s exhibition, sponsored by Tyndallwoods, at Harborne Art Gallery this month. See page 11 for more details. If you would like to find out more about Wills and Probate please contact Judy Dyke at Tyndallwoods Solicitors on 0121 693 2222.

Do You Know a Worthy Cause? Finesse Windows in Kings Norton is donating £10,000 worth of windows to a not for profit organisation. Who wins? You choose! Over the last 34 years Finesse has built strong relationships with many local residents, businesses and charities, putting a strong emphasis on the importance of community. Managing Director Russell Bridge said: “We’ve always tried to make sure that when able, we would contribute to our community and help those in need. Statistically it’s a nearfact that each of us know someone who has been affected by a life threatening illness, and understand how it can completely devastate a family. “We’ve held a number of events and fundraisers to benefit sufferers of disease and illness, in particular Motor Neurone Disease and Leukaemia.

Peter Pan delights audiences at The Blue Coat School The children at The Blue Coat School recently performed a musical adaptation of Peter Pan, J M Barrie’s story of the boy who wouldn’t grow up. They simply wowed the packed audiences with their energetic acting, singing and dancing. The cast of 150 children all had a brilliant time performing in the school’s newly refurbished auditorium and the principal and supporting actors all gave very confident and characterful portrayals in a two hour magical production that they are unlikely to forget!

Harborne Carnival... … Biggest street-party outside of London! As a resident of course you’re very much aware of Harborne Carnival already, it would be hard to miss some tens of thousands of people turning up for a party anywhere, but in the humble streets of Harborne it is worlds away from everyday life. The year round you could easily mistake Harborne for a quaint little village out in the countryside but on the day of the carnival the streets really come alive. Harborne Carnival rivals London’s Notting Hill Carnival in the street party scene which is incredibly impressive, and it says the summer has arrived in a way that nobody can ignore. So treat the whole family to a day of true carnival magic 21st June, 11am- 5pm Harborne High Street.
