Food Glorious Food Congratulations to Carters of Moseley! They’ve just been awarded a star in the 2016 Michelin Guide. Birmingham now has five Michelin starred restaurants, more than any other English city outside London, and the city is fast gaining a reputation as a delicious destination for gastro enthusiasts. Our little corner of Birmingham is particularly special. Simpsons has held a Michelin star since 2000, bringing Birmingham its first when the restaurant moved to Highfield Road in Edgbaston from Kenilworth in 2005. Michelin starred Turners of Harborne is also highly acclaimed, having won the Good Food Guide Readers’ Award for Best Midlands Restaurant in 2013. And posh nosh isn’t the only dish our neighbourhood has to shout about. There’s a smorgasbord of options to suit every palette and pocket, all just round the corner. For that all important first date, when you want to impress without breaking the bank, my advice would be to take a trip to the Highfield, on Highfield Road in Edgbaston. This classy gastropub recently celebrated its first birthday, and offers a menu of hearty options made using British ingredients. If you fancy something a bit more exotic, then the Blue Piano on Harborne

Road serves up mouthwatering South Asian cuisine in a beautiful Edwardian building. For a more down to earth pub-grub night out, we couldn’t be more spoilt for choice. The Plough on Harborne High Street made it into the Good Pub Guide’s top ten pubs in Birmingham in 2014. Its homemade, stone-baked pizzas are the perfect comfort food to warm the soul on a cold winter’s evening. Just up the road, The Junction serves traditional favourites such as burgers, and sausage and mash. But there’s nothing quite like the quick fix of a big bag of chips on that tipsy 2am totter home. Our trusty local takeaways, such as Sir Harry’s on the Pershore Road and Harborne Fish Bar on Northfield Road, offer a filling faceful of carbs at rock bottom prices into the early hours of the morning. From uptown style to cheap as chips, there’s no doubt about the star quality of eating options served up in Harborne and Edgbaston. by Alexandra Taylor

Fourteen Fascinating Festive Facts •

Families in Finland usually visit the graves of their relatives and ancestors on Christmas Eve to light candles in memory of the deceased.

Instead of glittering ornaments and tinsel, Ukrainian Christmas trees are covered with artificial spiders and cobwebs.

In Austrian tradition, St Nicholas’s is accompanied by an evil demon-like creature called Krampus that punishes bad children. Men dressed as Krampus roam the streets during the festive period, frightening people.

In Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, people travel to early morning church services during the Christmas period on roller skates. Roads are even cleared to provide worshippers with a safe journey.

The earliest recording of a new year celebration is believed to have been in Mesopotamia around 2000 BC, and was probably celebrated around the time of the northward equinox, 20th March.

The ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Persians began their new year with the southward equinox around 20th September.

The ancient Greeks celebrated the start of the coming year on the winter solstice, around 20th December.

The month of January was invented around 700 BC, when the second King of Rome, Numa Pontilius, added it, along with February, to the calendar.

The first time the new year was celebrated on 1st January was in Rome in 153 BC.

The Chinese new year occurs on the new moon of the first lunar month, and can fall any time between 21st January and 21st February.

The Iranian new year, called Nowruz, is the day containing the exact moment of the northward equinox, which usually occurs on 20th or 21st March.

Bengali New Year is celebrated on the 1st of Boishakh, which falls on 14th or 15th April in the Gregorian calendar.

The Islamic new year occurs on 1st Muharram, which moves about eleven days earlier each year in relation to the Gregorian calendar. This meant there were two Muslim new years in 2008.

The new year celebrations held in Dubai to mark the start of 2014 broke the world record for the most fireworks set off in a single display. They lasted for six minutes and involved the use of over 500,000 fireworks. by Alexandra Taylor

Bring festive magic into your home The Christmas markets have become a symbol that Christmas has truly arrived, but what is it that makes them so magical? And how do we bring that magic into our homes? Well it’s actually more simple than you might think… 1. That incredible Christmas smell Firstly cinnamon. There’s something so warm and cosy about this smell, you could get some scented candles, or bake cinnamon infused goodies. Then there’s roasted nuts, a quick google search will show you just how easy they are to make yourself to fill your house with that mouth watering, tantalising festive scent. Lastly, we like them big and we like them real, I’m talking of course about your Christmas trees. Fir trees have such an alluring smell, so go make a day of it with the family and choose your ideal tree. 2. Decorations It’s ever so tempting to stick to your routine when it comes to decorating the house, to just pull out that raggedy tinsel you’ve had for twenty years and chuck it over a mirror, but how about this… Green matte tinsel like the branches of a fir tree weaving their way around the house, and hugging up close to them, some white fairy lights with baubles and red bows to top it all off. This is the kind of enticingly cosy retreat you’ll be thankful for after facing the blustery winter elements all day.

3. Christmas cheer It pretty much goes without saying that this is the most important of them all, but you have to remember a get together with the whole family has many opportunities to turn into mayhem. So to make sure the mood stays ‘good-crazy’ and doesn’t slip perilously into ‘bad-crazy’ keep an idyllic festive setting with the classic Christmas songs, and get a sing-a-long going. You’d be surprised who’ll join in after an eggnog or two! Dressing up is sure to diffuse any tension that might still be lingering, and that means novelty onesies for everybody... because if dad is dressed up as a giant Christmas turkey then what can possibly go wrong? by Ruby Watson

Home grown talent of the 60s remembered BBC Radio’s Andy Peebles reminisces about the music coming out of Birmingham in the 60s. How much of this rings a bell for you? Fifty years ago The Beatles ruled the airwaves in both Britain and America making Liverpool an epicentre of musical creativity. Not to be outdone, Manchester and Birmingham provided competition for chart places as 1964 and 1965 became a highpoint of the swinging sixties. “Go Now” by the Moody Blues was a smash for Decca Records as the band covered an original version recorded by the American RnB singer Bessie Banks. Carl Wayne & Roy Wood sent me to my local record store for a copy of “I Can Hear The Grass Grow” as The Move became major players on the charts. Jeff Lynne was working with The Idle Race and The Applejacks when “Tell Me When” was all over the radio. The Rockin’ Berries flew the flag for Birmingham and we were amazed by the voice of young Stevie Winwood fronting the Spencer Davis Group. Megan Davies of Solihull band The Applejacks led the cause of feminism playing bass guitar for a band who owed their existence to the Scout and Guide movements. The Band Of Joy was to become the catalyst for Led Zeppelin, maybe the greatest rock band of them all. The club scene was vibrant and Birmingham was a hub of creativity making a major

contribution to pop culture. Duran Duran were a figment of someone’s musical imagination in 1965 as were UB40 and many other great bands from the West Midlands. If you own original recordings by these bands they might be worth a few bob! by Andy Peebles

Andy Peebles covered cricket for the BBC for 27 years. He was at Radio One for 13 years and was the last English broadcaster to interview John Lennon, two days before his death.

A touch of Finesse A popular Bournville community centre is set to become an even more attractive facility to local people, after winning a competition to have windows worth £10,000 supplied and fitted free of charge. Trustees and regular users of Rowheath Pavilion are celebrating following their initial nomination for the award, and the enormous social media support from local people that saw them emerge as winners by a landslide in a competition run by Birmingham based window specialists, Finesse. Finesse - one of the region’s leading suppliers of domestic windows - organise the competition every year; inviting customers and followers of their ‘Facebook’ page to nominate worthy causes from local communities around and about their headquarters, at Melchett Road, Kings Norton. Three of those good causes then go forward to a vote, via their Facebook page, with members of the public invited to decide who they think should win the prize of free new windows, and the installation. “Rowheath Pavilion were the overwhelming choice of our customers and local people, and I am so pleased for them,” said Ellie Franklin, Customer Services Director at Finesse.

“We will be transforming the upstairs meeting room by providing floor to ceiling windows and a French door, so that the room can used to its full potential. Finesse makes a big virtue of being involved in the local communities near to our HQ, and we want to be able to provide our services to benefit a worthy local cause,” said Ellen. Rowheath Pavilion won the public affection over rivals The Samaritans (Birmingham), and Woodcock Hill Primary School. It is not just a local community centre, but provides a base for many clubs and societies. The window and door designs have been approved by Bournville Village Trust to retain the unique character of the building. Mark Isgrove, manager of Rowheath Pavilion said: “We can’t thank Finesse enough, and we’re all so excited about the windows and the French door being fitted. It is going to make an enormous difference.”

The gift that keeps on giving... In the very depths of winter anything to perk up each icy cold day can feel like a small miracle, and it can come in all shapes and sizes. In this case it’s a little miracle involving holly, fairy lights, bows, bells and so much more. The big question we’re asking is; how will you decorate your front garden this Christmas? Don’t answer right away! You have some thinking to do, so we have put together a heat scale to help you make your decision on what kind of Christmas gift you’re going to bestow upon your neighbourhood this year… 1. Mild: An icy chill in the air. Dipping a toe in the festive almost frozen lake, a wreath on the door is the minimal Christmas touch. For many families this is plenty, and it certainly does its part to make the neighbourhood beautiful, but there are those who feel they have more to give, it’s like an unexplainable calling, a destiny that must be fulfilled, to fill every passer by with joy... 2. Medium: A light snow is falling and the trees are white with frost. This is for those of you who’ve done ‘mild’ several years running and feel it’s time to

step up your game. This may include a twinkling little arrangement of fairy lights in the bushes, a Christmas character on the front lawn, or perhaps a lit up festive sign reminding the neighbours to have themselves a merry little Christmas. 3. Intense: A festive blizzard wraps the neighbourhood up in snow like a beautiful gift. This is the all-out ‘American style’ festive explosion. For those not lucky enough to have witnessed this yet, you can expect every inch of the houses to be lit up with coloured lights, entire nativity scenes lit up and moving; reindeers, Christmas trees and of course the festive father himself. Say what you like about these extravagant displays but you know they put a smile on your face. So if you feel it’s worth the electricity bill you’d certainly be contributing to Christmas cheer on a grand scale. by Ruby Watson

Raise Your Glass! The festive season is when our local pubs come into their own, so what better time to celebrate the entertainment they’ve been providing in our neighbourhoods for hundreds of years. It was the Romans who first brought taverns to the UK, but the real boom came after the introduction of gin in the 17th century. Now there are around 48,000 pubs across the country, 73 of those within a 5 mile radius of Birmingham city centre. A time traveller going back to experience a 17th century alehouse would perhaps be surprised at how little has changed. Just like the bands that you can enjoy today in pubs such as The White Horse in Harborne, live music has always gone hand in hand with the drinks on offer. Many premises also included a card room or a billiard room, and by the end of the 18th century, saloons or lounges were another common feature. This was a room where, for an admission fee or higher drinks prices, singing, dancing, drama or comedy was performed and orders would be served at the table. It was these eclectic events which eventually evolved into the much loved Victorian music halls.

Also familiar would be traditional games such as darts, skittles and dominoes, although these days, you might also find a pile of board games (The Junction in Harborne) or a shelf of books to help you while away your time. Even seemingly modern innovations such as karaoke (The Proverbial in Harborne) and DJs (The Kings Head in Harborne) have their roots in the singalongs of the past. Some things have changed however. Modern pubs and bars prefer large, clear windows to the ornate smoked or stained glass of Victorian buildings. Gone are the days where genteel ladies, police officers or the parish priest wanted to hide their drinking from the judgemental eyes of the general public. So next time you’re enjoying a shame-free night in your local, raise a grateful toast to the Romans for introducing pub culture to the UK. by Alexandra Taylor

First impressions Your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you and to smile with confidence is something that many people take for granted. And so they should. If you wear dentures then you just want to forget about them and get on with your life. You want dentures that do not look like dentures. And perhaps most of all, you want to be able to smile without worrying about your teeth. If you live in Harborne or Edgbaston then the good news is that there is a Clinical Dental Technician in Harborne that offers a personalised bespoke service where you are able to have a consultation with the person who will make or repair your dentures for you. Phill Morris runs the Confidents Denture Clinic on Albert Road and with his team he has been putting the smile back on people’s faces for over 30 years. Phill said: “I work directly with patients so they can discuss their needs with me. I am sure most denture wearers wish they could speak to the person making

their dentures and have adequate time to explain just how they want them to look. “The challenge in making dentures is to create a denture that doesn’t look like a denture. Working closely with the patient enables me to do that.” If you are in a hurry repairs can be made within 1 hour, while you wait. Or if it is a completely new set of dentures that you need then you are able to have them crafted by a technician to whom you can talk directly.

For some advice or to make an appointment for a free initial consultation please call on :0121 426 3500 Confidents Denture Clinic 19 Albert Road, Harborne, B17 0AP

Is your business safe? What would happen if you lost mental capacity for example through dementia or Alzheimer’s? Who would manage your business? Don’t put your head in the sand - read this if you are a sole trader, in a business partnership, or a director of a business.

The introduction of the MentalTyndallwoods Health Discrimination Act 2013 is aimed at reducing the stigma of mental ill health. The result of the Act is that directors, among others, can no longer be removed from a business on the grounds of poor mental health. This could leave businesses stuck in a position where they cannot function properly and could ultimately close down. A Business Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is the answer, according to Ian Buchanan, local LPA specialist at Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston, echoing the views of Denzel Lush, Senior Judge at the Court of Protection. Ian said: “If you lose mental capacity this can have a devastating effect on your business. If cheques need your signature, funds cannot be accessed to pay staff and creditors. It is astonishing how quickly a business can grind to a halt when a person at the top is suddenly unable to work. “When considering a Business LPA it is important to choose a person who you 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site

Ian Buchanan

completely trust and who would act in your best interests, ultimately standing in your shoes making decisions based on what they think you would do. They would not necessarily be footer for useyou have as your Attorney the same person for personal affairs because of the need for business experience. “The good news is that the legal cost of putting a Business LPA in place is a tax deductible expense and what better thing to invest in than a safety net that will stop your business from suffering even if the worst comes to the worst? “These issues usually affect business owners in the later years of their working life, but it is important to start succession planning many years before you need it. Choosing the right person to be your attorney is not as simple as it may seem. They will need to be fully trusted, have the relevant experience and qualifications needed to continue the business, and have a degree of business sense.”

If you would like more information about a Business LPA please call Ian Buchanan at Tyndallwoods Solicitors on 0121 693 2222.

Show you care this Christmas all for a good Claus! Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is urging people to get into the festive spirit and show they care this Christmas. The local charity provides free care for over 1,200 patients, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and over the festive period. This year they have a packed programme in the run up to Christmas as part of their ‘Care at Christmas’ campaign. From the ‘Jingle Bell Jog’ to ‘Treecycling’ (get your tree collected after Christmas for a small donation), Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is encouraging locals to get involved in the various festive fundraising activities to raise vital funds to support patients and families in Birmingham and Sandwell living with a terminal illness this festive period. Hamish Shilliday, Head of Fundraising said, “For some of our patients this will be their last Christmas so we want to make sure they can enjoy this special time with their loved ones. Christmas is a time to care and we hope that our ‘Care at Christmas’ campaign will urge people to get involved in our festive fundraising activities.” Kicking off the campaign in Santa style is the Jingle Bell Jog. Now in its second

year, the fun-filled family event returns on Sunday 6th December at Kings Heath Park (11am). Participants can spread some Christmas cheer by completing the 2km fun run in their free Santa suit which is provided for all Jingle Bell Joggers (along with a mince pie at the finish line!). Locals can also book to get their Christmas tree recycled as part of the ‘Treecycling’ scheme. For a donation, you can book to have your tree collected from outside your property and recycled at local recycling centres. Over 700 trees were collected last year raising over £8,500 worth of vital funds. And if none of that fits your Christmas wish list their festive Christmas cards can be bought online or in any of their 13 shops across the region.
