Birmingham Botanical Gardens – THE place to be this summer This summer there is much to delight, fascinate and entertain people of all ages at the beautiful Birmingham Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston. As well as fifteen acres of luxurious landscaped gardens with over 7000 plants, shrubs and trees, there are four stunning glasshouses taking you from lush tropical rainforest to the extreme aridity of the desert. Outdoors, the Loudon Terrace looks out across the sweeping Main Lawn, a natural amphitheatre, with the four-flight Lawn Aviary at its focus. The Main Lawn will be the stage for a buzzing programme of live music and open-air theatre this summer. Chapterhouse Theatre Company presents ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ on 16 July and William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ on 23 July. On 6 August they are also presenting a really delightful production of ‘Jungle Book’ for all the family. MDCC Theatre Company is producing Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ on 20 August. On 23 August there is another delightful and famous tale - ‘Treasure Island’ presented by Rain or Shine Theatre Company.
bands to light music and jazz, with a couple of gigs as part of the Birmingham International Jazz and Blues Festival – Magnolia Sisters on 26 July and Electro Swing Circus on 27 July. A highlight of the summer programme will be ‘Queen – A Musical Tribute Concert’ on 17 August – a real treat. Regular delights include the Children's Playground and there are special themed Children’s Trails and Family Explorer Backpacks for hire so that the whole family can explore the delights of the Gardens. The annual Teddy Bears’ picnic will be on 27 August, with free admission for under 16s. And last but not least, the 'Shop at the Gardens' is home to a gorgeous collection of gifts, books, stationery and plants.

Our favourite family sports day Moseley family, the Lights, talk of their favourite family sporting events. We have lived and worked in South Birmingham all our lives. As teachers we are acutely aware of the need to engage our three children in extracurricular activities, be they cultural, recreational or sporting. We have always enjoyed family trips to watch athletics – everything from the Indoor Grand Prix at the National Indoor Arena to the Olympics – but our favourite has always been the British Championships, staged in Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium. We get to watch the best athletes in the country battling it out to be crowned British Champion (and usually to secure selection to the GB team for that summer’s major international athletics championships) meaning that every race is fiercely competitive. The atmosphere created at the Alexander Stadium is part serious athletics, part carnival, with plenty
for kids of all ages to do in-between athletics watching. In recent years, we’ve been lucky enough to see the likes of Mo Farah, Jessica EnnisHill, Greg Rutherford and Christine Ohuruogu competing, and even got to meet them after their races as the athletes mingle with the fans in the spectators’ village. Athletes are real role models for our youngsters and are always willing to make time for an autograph or a “selfie” with their fans. Both Saturday and Sunday offer a really full day out for all the family, even if you aren’t committed athletics fans. We’ve introduced many families to the event over the years who had never been to athletics before, and most have returned year on year. Why not make 2014 the year your family discovers the unique joy of a day at the British Athletics Championships – neither you nor your kids will regret it.

Planning for the inevitable In our latest ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ series we say hello to Ian Buchanan, Director who specialises in Wills, Trusts and Powers of Attorney and also residential conveyancing. Tyndallwoods footer for useIan Buchanan, Director, TEP This combination serves Ian’s clients well because if he helps someone to buy a house and the subject of Wills is raised he can handle both matters. Similarly when people are going through Wills, Trusts and Powers of Attorney procedures there may be property sales and purchases to consider and it is comforting to clients to be able to deal with the same solicitor rather than talk to a new person at this often-emotional time. Ian joined Tyndallwoods in April 2009 and within an impressively short time he has completed his STEP qualifications and was made a director of the firm last year. Ian’s clients are mostly locally based people, and often they are the second or third generation to have used Tyndallwoods. The family oriented, genuinely friendly and charitable ethos of the firm perfectly lends itself to the private client services that they specialise in.
29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site
Ian has three pieces of advice to offer people reading this: 1. Timing is critical when planning your Will, do not leave it until it is too late. 2. It is best to seek professional and regulated advice from a solicitor, this will save you money in the long run. 3. Consider putting in place a Power of Attorney before it is required. Often people come to us to seek advice after their relative has begun to lose capacity. This can often be too late and can lead to additional fees and a delay of eight to ten months to go through the Court of Protection process.
For more information or to make an appointment you can call Ian on 0121 693 2222.

St Mary's Hospice charity auction To celebrate its 35th anniversary St Mary’s Hospice is holding an auction with the support of William Farmer and Nick Davies of Fieldings Auctioneers of Stourbridge. Judy said: “I am honoured to be a patron of Birmingham St Mary's Hospice. Serving a population of 1.4 million across Birmingham and Sandwell, the Hospice cares for more than a thousand patients a year, their families and loved ones, no matter how young or old, throughout the patient's illness and after bereavement, for as long as necessary. To maintain this vital service across Birmingham and Sandwell £7.4 million has to be raised each year.”
There will be 35 antique lots each valued at over £35. Are you following the theme? If you would like to donate any antique items to support this wonderful local charity please contact Judy Dyke at Tyndallwoods Solicitors. Collection can be arranged.

service. Moo Fresh staff are trying to keep this traditional service alive by supplying the freshest most wholesome milk to customers doors in eco-friendly, returnable glass bottles.
For over a hundred years the great British milkman has been delivering fresh milk to our doors, but the decline of this great institution over the last thirty years due to changes in consumers purchasing habits along with the rise of twentyfour hour cut price supermarkets has made it very difďŹ cult for many dairies to survive and has had a knock on effect for British farmers.
The 20th century milkman offers the same great service but there is no more waiting in to pay your milkman, or sticking notes in the empty bottles. You can now order and pay your bill online. To order your free week of milk go to www.moofresh.co.uk or call 0121 647 3537

Paint drops keep falling An exhibition of sumptuous paintings by Claire Leggett will be on show at Harborne Art Gallery from 13 June and throughout July. You are invited to the preview on 12 June between 5 and 8pm where you can enjoy the atmosphere of the gallery with a glass of wine and feast your eyes on the delightful work of this emerging local artist. Claire said: "My painting and design is a celebration of colour and pattern. I love ornament and design in both natural and man made objects. With a background in printed textiles I find myself most often drawn to flat, graphic pattern as a backdrop for flowers and domestic ceramics. I enjoy the look of a painted line and the texture of paint on watercolour paper. I love to create still life paintings that either blend a harmonious colour palette or contrast with a vibrant ‘pop’ of colour. ” Claire is a full-time painter and surface pattern designer based in Birmingham. She was born in London where she began her formal art training. In 1991 she graduated with a BA Hons Degree

in Fashion and Textile Design, specialising in Printed Textiles at Birmingham Poly (now UCB). Claire’s blog, PaintdropsKeepFalling, is gathering an enthusiastic following and she loves to hear from anyone who shares her passion and appreciates her work. Community Garden Martineau Gardens and the Traditional Arts Team have joined forces to create the Martineau Gardens Storytelling Festival, a family friendly day, which returns to South Birmingham for the third year running on Saturday 21 June. There will be a full programme of storytelling taking place through out the two and half acre leafy community garden - in the marquee and in locations around the gardens, from woodland glades to the sundial lawn. Confirmed performers include local storytellers Graham Langley, Cath Edwards and Catriona Heatherington. Music and the arts will be found throughout the Gardens. Highlights include live music from local musicians, a ceilidh dancing workshop, story trails, a performance by children of Liquid Dance and more. Local artist Tom Jones, will be a ‘wandering artist,’ making postcard portraits of visitors and performers capturing the spirit of the festival. encourage festival goers to feast on food and stories around the wood fired outdoor oven. Graham Langley, of the Traditional Arts Team said: “This is a chance for people to experience terrific storytelling and more in a beautiful location – whether it’s a seated marquee performance, Earth Oven tales or a story trail around the woodland glades, we’ve created a programme with something for everyone.” Caroline Hutton, Director of Martineau Gardens said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming new faces to Martineau Gardens through this Storytelling Festival.” Tickets on sale from www.wegottickets.com or on the gate. Help save Moor Pool Hall and Green Last year, the present owners of The Moor Pool Estate - international property developers, Grainger plc, tried to sell the green land and community hall, but they did not reckon on the opposition they met from the surrounding community. The Moor Pool Heritage Trust was set up as a registered charity to raise funds to save this historic part of Harborne from re-development. The Moor Pool Estate was founded over a hundred years ago, and is home to 500 families with a unique community hall, bowling green, tennis club, fishing club and skittle alley. Since then this little community has been battling to raise £325,000 to buy back these historic facilities from Grainger plc and preserve them for future generations. They have held several fundraising events such as the Moor Pool's Got Talent Show and there are a whole host of events coming up so you can get involved and help make a difference. Fundraising Events
5 July: Summer Charity Ball at Edgbaston Golf Club. Supporters will dine in the luxurious surroundings and dance to live jazz music. With a charity auction and raffle prizes to bid for this will be one of the highlights of the summer. Hurry though, tickets (£40) are selling fast. 13 July: Moor Pool Food Festival. Food entrepreneurs can showcase their skills in the Hall by entering a competition to find the Best Moor Pool Dish; the theme is gooseberries. There will be a selection of food and drink stalls during the day and outside there will be fun for all the family with a challenge to build the biggest circle of 20p coins around The Circle where the Hall is located. Take your 20ps and join in the challenge to get into the Guinness Book of World Records. Further information:
7 June: Quiz Night and Fish & Chip Supper (£10). An evening out with food and friends at Moor Pool Hall.

Calling all Harborne and Edgbaston primary schools With the weather getting sunnier as we make the welcome move into summer what better time to launch Friends of the Earth's new campaign “Schools Run on Sun.” The campaign has a simple premise – “Every school that wants solar, should have it” – and an ambitious aim – to head toward clean energy in every street and every town across the UK. More clean energy is urgently needed to help tackle climate change, and schools are a great place to start as they are at the heart of so many communities. They also have big roofs that can create lots of lovely solar energy, saving the average school up to £8,000 on energy bills. It is a burning ambition of Friends of the Earth to enable our children to grow up in a world where renewable energy is completely normal, and this Run on Sun campaign aims to do just that. Friends of the Earth will be working for as many primary schools to have solar as possible, by making the case to schools themselves, as well as lobbying local and national politicians to do more to help schools go solar.
However just because the campaign is focussing on primary schools, doesn't mean that getting solar panels on homes and other community buildings isn't important. Any individual or community group is encouraged to look at solar energy. There are some inspirational examples in Birmingham, for example the Four Dwellings High School (now academy) has solar panels installed from a council project in 2008. Julien Pritchard of Friends of the Earth said: “If you're a teacher or governor at a Primary School who's inspired by this, and are interested in having solar panels on your school, then why not get in touch?
We'd love to hear from you. You can email us at: campaigns@birminghamfoe.org.uk

Edgbaston born John Boland, th world's first Ol e ympic Tennis Ch ampion
8 Ampton Road, Edgbaston the birthplace of lawn tennis
Edgbaston the home of lawn tennis Here are five reasons Edgbaston can safely been named as the home of tennis: 1. Edgbaston is the ‘Home of Lawn Tennis’ with the first game being played at 8 Ampton Road in Edgbaston in 1859 by Major Harry Gem, Clerk to Birmingham Magistrates who played rackets at the Bath Street Racket Courts and his friend Spanish Merchant Augurio Perera. Gem and Perera wanted to play an outdoors racket game and marked out a court on the lawn at Perera’s home. The dimensions of a tennis court roughly correspond to those of the back garden where it began. 2. In honour of another hugely significant Birmingham Tennis figure the Centre Court at Edgbaston Priory is named after the 1969 Wimbledon Ladies Singles Champion Ann Jones, who lived in Edgbaston after devoting a lifetime of service to the game of tennis, firstly as a County player with Warwickshire then as a British Wimbledon Champion and latterly as an official with the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
38
3. The University of Birmingham Tennis Courts Halls of Residence in Edgbaston Park Road is where the photograph of the iconic 1970's Athena poster: 'The Tennis Girl' was taken by Black Country photographer Martin Elliott. 4. Edgbaston Archery and Lawn Tennis Society (E.A.L.T.S.) in Westbourne Road, next to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens is the oldest existing Lawn Tennis Club in the world predating the All England Club in Wimbledon by a year with E.A.L.T.S. being founded in 1874. 5. The Edgbaston Oratory, in Hagley Road, Edgbaston, near to Tolkien’s ‘Two Towers’ in Waterworks Road was once home to the first Olympic Tennis Champion John Pius Mary Boland. For this year’s first chance to see the world’s top women players on grass don’t miss the Aegon Classic from 9 - 15 June at Edgbaston Priory. www.aegontennis.co.uk Keith Bracey, Birmingham Historian and Writer

Chef Richard Turner at his Harborne Michelin Star restaurant, Turners
Respecting the food Deep respect of the raw ingredient sourced from the finest suppliers, and an on-going homage to the changing seasons, Richard Turner’s fresh flavoured dishes are based on simple classics, but with creative twists that have contributed to his string of accolades including his Michelin Star awarded yearly since 2009. With arrival of summer the production of British lamb is at full speed and in my opinion at its best. Whilst Spring lamb is good, the extra couple of months on fresh grass gives it a better depth of flavour and fat covering which enhances the eating of this great British animal.
tin foil ready to cook. Start the barbecue with lots of coals on a Sunday morning and once the flames have died down put the shoulder into the embers, put the lid down and leave all day while you read the papers, watch the cricket, or in my case wash the car and mow the lawns!
All the choice cuts of lamb can be cooked “a la minute” on the barbecue or in the kitchen pan fried nice and rare. But how about trying something a little different?
A good eight hours is recommended and when ready to eat, remove the lamb from the coals, unwrap and you will have a beautiful cooked piece of meat which will just melt in your mouth. Serve with another British classic at its prime, steamed Jersey royals and the last of the season’s asparagus.
In older times farmers used to slow cook the tougher cuts in fires in the ground. They would put the lamb in and cover, go off to work and come back after a long day in the fields and dig up the lamb which had slowly cooked in the embers of the fire. I am not suggesting you dig up the back lawn and start a fire. But how about buying a nice shoulder of lamb boned and rolled from your local butcher? We buy ours from Roger Browns in Harbourne. Season with whatever you choose, rosemary and garlic or cumin and yoghurt for example, roll in
Enjoy and happy cooking. Richard Turner www.turnersrestaurantbirmingham.co.uk Turners Restaurant, 69 High Street Harborne, B17 9NS T: 0121 426 4440 Twitter: @TurnersRestBrum facebook: TurnersRestaurantBirmingham

Give domestic abusers the red card Football fever is gripping the nation this month with the 2014 World Cup starting in Brazil on 12 June. No-one can predict how the England team will fare, but unfortunately what is known is that the police often see a rise in alcoholrelated violence, disorder and anti-social behaviour during large-scale sporting events. While police operations are underway to target known trouble-makers attempting to travel abroad for matches and also tackle crime fuelled by alcohol on home turf, equally serious crimes will be taking place behind closed doors and frequently going unreported. Domestic abuse affects 1.2 million women and 700,000 men nationally and the abuse can be physical, psychological, sexual, financial or emotional. It can involve any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse. There is no typical victim, abuser or type of relationship where domestic abuse takes place, and a victim is typically abused an average of 35 times before police are alerted.
to known offenders to monitor their behaviour – but only if they are aware of the abuse. Whether you’re a victim, know someone is suffering or you are an abuser seeking help, you can talk to someone who can help today. If you can’t talk to police on 101, there are national agencies and local organisations that provide excellent support. From a friendly ear, to counselling, housing applications and emergency injunctions – these groups are invaluable in taking the first step on the road to a safer, happier future. In an emergency, always dial 999. Visit www.west-midlands.police.uk and go to the Advice Centre > Help and Advice > Domestic Abuse for further information on types of abuse and contact details for organisations who can help. Also available in this section is guidance on how to request information from police about a partner’s history of violent behaviour under the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme.
Specially trained domestic abuse officers investigate reports, support victims and pay regular visits

Pereira Road Open Gardens Three gardens, numbers 14, 50 and 55, will again be open in Pereira Road on the afternoon of 29 June. The gardens have been open for several years, but are always evolving and offer something new each year. Perhaps they will provide inspiration. Number 50 is a plantaholics paradise, with many unusual plants for sale in aid of CAFOD. The other gardens have mixed shrub and perennial planting and ponds. All gardens are steep with steps.
Combined admission of £3.50 together with takings from tea and cakes, is split between the National Garden Scheme, which gave £2,500 to various charities in 2013 and St Mary’s Hospice.
This year there will also be access to Harborne Nature Reserve where knowledgable volunteers will chat to visitors; and for the first time the Pereira Road allotments will be open where members of the committee will be on hand to discuss the availability of plots.

The Strings Club founder, Amy Cunningham said: “After winning Start-Up of 2013, I am thrilled to have been nominated for this category. The Strings Club has gone from strength-to-strength over the past year and I have found there is a real demand in Birmingham for fun-filled, high-quality courses that really inspire children to play an instrument.” The Strings Club offers award-winning Guitar, Violin, Cello and Ukulele lessons for children aged 4-12. Courses start from aged 4 with Strings Club Minis Ukulele. Strings Club course co-ordinator, Liz Howell said: "One-to-one tuition is one thing but the skills a child gains from learning to play an instrument in a group are an important part of their development – both musically and in terms of their wellbeing.”
Weekly lessons are available as well as holiday camps and activities. For more information go to www.thestringsclub.org

What a difference £1 makes People often think nothing of spending over £2 on a small latte, so what difference can just £1 per week really make to our local charities? Carl Bayliss has managed TLC Lottery for nearly 4 years and in this time has seen how giving a small amount helps thousands of local people each year. “The money raised through the ongoing support of TLC Lottery players is the equivalent of funding 3 specialist children’s hospice nurses, 65 adult patients receiving Hospice at Home care and 2,000 blind disabled people visited at home,” explains Carl. “Although our lottery’s weekly top prize of £1,000 is not life-changing compared to the huge National Lottery prizes, the
money raised by our supporters makes a real difference to so many Birmingham people.” TLC is a joint fundraising venture of Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and Focus Birmingham. It costs just £1 per week to play and you can join online at: www.tlclottery.co.uk or telephone 01564 825047
