Do you have a passion for natural beauty products? Would you like to have a second income? If your answer is yes to both of the above then it couldn’t be simpler. Local girl Abbie Iles, age 21, is a shining example of how to combine entrepreneurial flair with a passion for beauty products. Abbie is an independent consultant for the US based, Swiss formulated, premier natural skincare company, Arbonne, as well as being a student and working part time in a beauty salon. For just a £54 joining fee and £15 for her first samples she was up and running. And with the women’s ‘kit’ she was ready to make a flying start to her new business. Much of Abbie’s business is through word of mouth, starting from her network of friends, who then recommend her to their friends and so on. The key to the success of this business is in the quality of the products and the personality of the consultant. Arbonne products are recognised nationally as being in the same league as La Priarie and

6

have been endorsed by Vogue magazine on a number of occasions. However, you won’t find them on the shelves of any shop. They are purely sold through consultants like Abbie. Arbonne produces skincare products for women, men and babies and also includes a spa range, cosmetic range and suncare and health and wellness range. The products are botanically based, made with all natural ingredients, PH balanced, hypo-allergenic, dermatalogically tested, and are certified vegan. If you are interested in starting up your own business with unlimited potential on a shoestring budget then give Abbie a call and she will be able to help. She will provide you with all the training you need and get you up and running for no extra cost other than purchasing the products themselves.

You can contact Abbie on 07850 430 121 or abbieiles@hotmail.co.uk

De-cluttering tips from the expert De-cluttering your wardrobe gives you space for this season’s ‘must haves’ and if you take your unwanted good quality clothing along to Encore you can turn it into cash. Encore owner Christine Timms has thirty years experience in the fashion industry and has some helpful advice:

• If you haven't worn it for 12 months - let it go

• If it doesn't fit you any more - let it go • If you have replaced it with the latest version - let it go

• Now is a good time to take in

your unwanted autumn/winter clothes and party dresses

Items must be in excellent condition. Encore will review, price and sell them in the store. Then you get 50% of the sale price. Encore is a designer boutique in Moseley specialising in pre-loved clothing, shoes and accessories for men and women.

Apple Day at Martineau Gardens Celebrate this season’s harvest of apples, grown in Martineau Gardens’ orchard. This family friendly event on Saturday 19 October from 11am – 3pm will provide an afternoon of family fun. Apples from the Martineau Gardens’ orchard will be pressed during the event with a traditional wooden press, to produce delicious apple juice. You can also take along your own apples and a bottle if you’d like to press them and take the juice home with you.

Admission: Martineau Gardens are open Monday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm and are free entry except on some event days. Apple Day is free entry. To find out about becoming a member, go to www.martineaugardens.org.uk

The Gardens' seasonal harvest will be for sale including apples, home-made jams, honey (from the Martineau Gardens’ bees), freshly-cut vegetables and salads. There will be delicious home-made cakes, salads and sandwiches and other refreshments on sale. Also, you can stock up on mulch for fruit trees and vegetable and flower beds. This is the perfect time to spread mulch around trees and plants to help retain moisture and enrich the soil.

Birmingham Friends of the Earth launched their Let's Get Moving campaign with stunts in the city centre.

Pedalling for Laughs The quality of the air we breathe is something we barely think about these days with other environmental issues and concerns being much more prevalent. However, poor air quality is still a really big problem which is where Friends of the Earth’s ‘Let’s Get Moving’ campaign comes in. As traffic is the biggest cause of poor air quality, it should be easier for people to choose to walk and cycle, ways of getting about that produce no toxic emissions and have many health benefits. Friends of the Earth is calling for the City Council to build on the recent central grant for cycling by securing even greater investment to really tackle air pollution. They will also be trying to help make cycling that little bit better themselves, raising money with their second comedy gig, ‘Pedalling for Laughs’ at the Glee Club. Last year they raised £1,000 for bee-friendly projects; this year, on 20 November, they

12

are hoping to do even better and raise even more money to fund local cycling projects. There is a fantastic line-up of comedians including: the fabulously funny Barbara Nice, and Adam Kay, front man of legendary Amateur Transplants, as well as James Cook, Stella Graham, and Steve Day. So for a great night of fantastic comedy in support of cycling projects in Birmingham, get your tickets from The Warehouse, 54-57 Allison Street, or log onto www.glee.co.uk. Tickets are £12 with student, early bird and group discounts available. More details: bit.ly/pedallingforlaughs You can also get involved in the campaign in other ways, find out more at www.get-moving.org.uk

Hiroshi Nishikawa, consultant plastic surgeon at The Westbourne Centre, discusses treatment options with patients

The Rise of Day Hospitals? The publication of the Francis inquiry into care provided by Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, and the stories that have come out throughout the process have caused concern amongst people considering hospital procedures. "In the last 6 months we have seen a significant rise in the number of people enquiring about our surgical services because they will not have to stay overnight at hospital," unveils Sarah Rush, managing director at The Westbourne Centre, a specialist day hospital in Edgbaston. "Our unique ability to perform a wide range of major surgical procedures using local anesthetic means patients spend only a few hours here, then recuperate in their own home." The technique of performing advanced procedures using a local anesthetic with intravenous sedation and analgesia was adopted and developed for cosmetic surgery by two consultant surgeons at The Westbourne Centre, Fazel Fatah and Hiroshi Nishikawa, in collaboration with a group of dedicated consultant anesthetists. Years of auditing and evaluating the technique have demonstrated positive surgical outcomes and overwhelming acceptance by patients. "Patients needing treatments cannot wait for reassurance about the safety of the hospital. They need to move forward confident they are receiving the best possible care and consideration” continues Sarah Rush. "At The Westbourne Centre, patients have peace of mind because their care

borders on luxurious. They meet personally with the Consultant at every appointment, and our perfected local anesthetic and sedation skills ensure they don’t stay in hospital longer than is necessary." Surgical specialities and treatments available at The Westbourne Centre using local anesthesia, with or without sedation, include:

• Cosmetic surgery including breast

augmentation, facelift and abdominoplasty

• Reconstructive surgery for breast, face and body, including fat grafting

• Cataract and lens replacement • Vasectomies • Hernia and varicose veins treatments • Dental and Maxillofacial surgery • Orthopaedic surgery including carpal tunnel and fasciitis

A full list of treatments and procedures is available on the website www.WestbourneCentre.com

Making Magical Memories Photographs are how we remember important events, long after the memories fade. If you’re having trouble choosing someone to capture your big day, Charles Davis from Professional Photography has five top tips. 1. Get the picture. Take time looking through photographers’ portfolios and think about what you want from your own pictures. If you’re after informal, reportage-style snaps, then choose a photographer whose work shows their ability to capture those spontaneous, one-off moments. 2. Know what you want. The more a photographer understands what you like, the more chance they have of meeting, and exceeding your expectations. What balance of formal and informal pictures do you want? Will one photographer be enough? What about a temporary studio for more formal shots? Which part of the event is most important? Be as specific as possible. 3. Time is of the essence. Ask the photographer about their planning and preparation. A good photographer will want to check out the venue in advance to identify the best settings and vantage points. They’ll also want to discuss the schedule with you and to spend time talking through what you want.

30

4. Get cheeky! Wedding officials and ministers from all faiths usually have an opinion about when to take photographs and where a photographer should stand, but this may not be the right time and place to get the best shot of the happy couple. It’s important to be respectful but, whatever the event, a photographer who is willing to get into a little bit of trouble for their client may well deliver the best results. 5. Raising a smile. Many people feel self-conscious when there’s a photographer lurking, but if they can put people at ease and bring out the best in your guests, then the memories captured will be the happiest ones. If you would like to discuss photography for your wedding you can contact Charles Davis on 07824 444 487. Alexandra Taylor

More than law It’s all change at Edgbaston-based law firm Tyndallwoods Solicitors but business as usual too. Whilst clients will see the same level of service and support, behind the scenes there has been a change in how the company is run. In August, Tyndallwoods was authorised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority as an Alternative Business Structure (or ABS), which in simple terms has enabled the ownership of the company to be shared between eight senior lawyers and managers. Chairman Judy Dyke said; “This means a lot to us because we have been able to recognise the energy and enthusiasm of a new generation of colleagues. “We want our clients to know that we are moving with the times, investing in quality systems and processes, but we are holding on to our traditional values with a continued commitment to offering an outstanding service.” Solicitor Clare Martin TEP said; “This is a great move for the company and a great move for me

too. I get a lot of job satisfaction working in a firm where client care is such a priority. It gives me the chance to take time to get to know clients and their families throughout the generations.” Tyndallwoods can trace its history back over 220 years being founded in the late 1700s, and Judy follows in her father’s footsteps heading up the firm. Tyndallwoods is very active with local charities, with Judy a patron of Edward’s Trust and St Mary’s Hospice, and Clare, a patron of Edward’s Trust. They also support OHMI the One Handed Musical Instrument project and Children in Need. More recently, Managing Director Martin Dyke has become involved in the very topical bee crisis by training as a bee keeper and installing a top bar bee hive on the grounds. To cap it all, the firm plants trees in Thailand which enables the firm to be carbon neutral.

Are you entitled to 225% tax relief? Would you like to see tax as an inflow rather than an outflow of money from your business? Well, if you are involved in any kind of research and development resulting in an altered or a new product, then tax advisors Bloomer Heaven have some good news for you. You could be entitled to a whopping 225% tax relief on all costs relating to research and development, according to Chris Barlow, director at city centre based Bloomer Heaven. “These costs can include product expenses such as materials, as well as the cost of services such as heating and lighting, and that most valuable commodity of all, time,” he said. “Often business owners do not even realise they are entitled to this surprisingly generous form of tax relief. But if they are doing something as simple as making a recipe for mayonnaise healthier, this could be classed as research and development, and they may be entitled to the relief. “The key is to be able to prove that a product has been taken from one state to another via a process that has involved change. The costs of it going wrong can even be included, as long as there is a successful finished product at the end of the process. “This is a largely unknown form of tax relief, that is hugely beneficial to a diverse range of

36

industries. To successfully claim this form of tax relief it is vital to provide the information to HMRC in a specific format. At Bloomer Heaven we have a wealth of experience in this area, having completed claims for businesses in the automotive, general manufacturing, food production, medical products, scientific instruments, software and paper industries.” You can find out more at a free seminar that Bloomer Heaven is holding on 24 October, or by contacting Bloomer Heaven. Back to school Following the summer holidays, September has seen all thoughts and focus on returning to school after the break. The daunting prospect of starting secondary school was helped by local officers from the Safer Travel team who accompanied pupils on buses during the first two weeks of term to ensure that they stay safe. Local police officers from the Safer Travel Partnership were joined by PCs from British Transport Police as well as transport authority Centro and National Express. The operation was put into place to reduce crime on transport networks to deter opportunist thieves hoping to take advantage of perceived easy targets. Top tips Pupils, parents and guardians are reminded on the below top tips and safety advice when making journeys:

• Never bring non-essential gadgets to

• When out and about keep your phone,

games console or mp3 player out of sight

• If travelling by bus, sit close to the driver

where possible or in view of any CCTV cameras. Avoid sitting upstairs if you are by yourself. Check service times before leaving to avoid waiting at bus stops for long periods

• When you are walking alone, try to stick to well-lit busy streets.

• If your child is going home to an empty house, remind them to keep the front door locked and to call you when they get in each day

• Register your valuables on the free national property registration database www.immobilise.com - if police recover your lost or stolen belongings, you are more likely to get them back.

school, they are much safer at home
