Hooray for the spring! It’s been a long and crazy winter but finally we are seeing longer days and the flowers are starting to come out. And what a great time of year for the lovely Martine McCutcheon to come visiting our neck of the woods! Her show at The Core Theatre in Solihull could well be sold out by now (do check!) - but you can still get a chance to see her if you enter our competition. This issue we also bring to you a flavour of the season with our Easter Feast Mediterranean roast recipe. And you can find out about the psychology of colour in our garden page and we have 10 handy life hacks for you in our home page. Don’t miss the fabulous choice of events going on locally gathered together for you in our what’s on guide and check out what’s new in word on the street. Happy Easter from all of us here,

with Martine McCutcheon
After a break of more than ten years from the limelight she’s back with a bang! You can see her perform at The Core Theatre in Solihull on 18 April and she will also be performing in Redditch on the 17 May if you don’t get to see her in Solihull. Martine said: “Coming back has been exciting, nerve-racking, scary and liberating all at the same time. Not many women my age get to have a second chance in this industry so I feel incredibly lucky and keep having to pinch myself! “As a working class girl it’s ingrained in me to make hay while the sun shines so I felt I couldn’t turn down any opportunity and in the end needed to take a break to smell the roses again! I was taking stock of my life, taking care of what really mattered and this album evolved over those ten years. “During my time out I wrote everything down - well I’ve been doing that since I was nine years old actually. My husband Jack encouraged me to write songs because I love it and that’s just what I did. Then my son Raffy came along and it is really a case of family first and he’s three now so still young enough to take on tour with us so I’m hoping we’ll have time to visit some of the local attractions with him. “I’m really looking forward to performing in The Core Theatre. I wanted the tour to be of smaller venues so that it would feel more personal - the audience can ask questions and it feels a lot more intimate.”
Martine McCutcheon first found fame as Tiffany Mitchell in Eastenders in the 1990s, before releasing her platinumselling debut solo album ‘You, Me & Us’ in 1999 containing the No. 1 single ‘Perfect Moment’. West End and TV roles followed and along the way she became the nation’s sweetheart. In 2003, Martine memorably played Natalie opposite Hugh Grant in ‘Love Actually.’ Now 41, happily married, mother of a 3 year old, the time felt right to return to the studio. Martine has co-written most of the songs on the new album ‘Lost and Found’ with her husband, the multiinstrumentalist/vocalist Jack McManus, and she has never sounded better! Martine is back not only musically; she also reprised her role in the Comic Relief reunion of ‘Love Actually’ earlier this year and has just wrapped a film with Alan Davies called ‘The Bromley Boys.’ However it’s music that’s her main focus. First single ‘Say I’m Not Alone’, is a song like nothing Martine has ever recorded before; big, bold, brash, merging clanging guitars, thumping drums and a hard hitting lyric. Other album highlights include the rocky ‘Any Sign Of Life’, the beautiful ‘Stay With Me’ (which is a duet with Jack) and album closer ‘Rebellion’.
The album is a deeply personal record that deals with everything from relationships to Martine’s debilitating illness that saw her unable to work. “Life brought this album about very gradually,” explains Martine. “It was a really unconscious thing; I started writing the songs at a time in my life when I’d lost everything.” For the full list of tour dates go to iammartine.com and to buy tickets to see Martine in Solihull go to: thecoretheatresolihull.co.uk/ about/box-office-tickets/
WIN TICKETS! To see Martine live at The Core Theatre Solihull on 18 April. Free prize draw to win two tickets (worth £50) but hurry... closing date is 5pm Friday 13 April. Visit www.swanpublishing.org/competitions.

Charitable Harborne High Street Sadly many people in the Birmingham Community experience ill-health and hardship and it is wonderful to learn of the support given by our local community. Judy said: “The first shop that I have visited, The Gem Box, located next to Waitrose, is a family established jewellers operating for over 30 years. I first encountered the Gem Box when I visited them to have a ring re-sized and refurbished. I enjoyed excellent service from Paul their in-house jeweller, Margot and Jay. I was so pleased to find we all support Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice.”
Harborne High Street has a variety of charity shops which raise money for worthy charities. However, scratch beneath the surface and there is a lot more charitable activity going on than meets the eye. Over the next few months Judy Dyke of Tyndallwoods will be heading down the High Street to find out about the charitable work carried out by our local businesses.
The Hospice provides vital care to patients and families living with terminal illnesses across Birmingham and Sandwell. The Gem Box offers the local community a variety of jewellry, watches, engagement and wedding rings, antique items as well as repairs, valuation and engraving services. The work done is all bespoke completed by the in-house jeweller.

5 Easy Mindfulness
Excercises
Mindfulness is the practice of clearing out a cluttered mind, and what better time to do that than spring? If your life is a series of problem solving and strategising about how to possibly fit in all of your obligations and make your money stretch to cover all the things it has to then mindfulness can definitely help you. Here are some basic excercises to give you an idea of how it works.
1. Savour your meals
Really focus on the smell, texture and taste
2. Breathe
Sit and breathe in a quiet room for 10 mins
3. Observe
Take a moment each day to stop and observe
4. Visualise 5. Body scan
Empty your mind by envisioning your thoughts as solid objects, focus on each one before pushing them away. Close your eyes and take a few minutes to think about each part of your body, slowly from head to toe.

EASTER FEAST MEDITERRANEAN ROAST
Spring is in the air! As we start to see some warmer weather and the return of blossoming flowers it finally seems appropriate to be tucking into a mediterranean feast. This delightful recipe exhibits all of the comforting elements of a winter roast, but this time with a bit of a kick to it.
Ingredients:
M M M M M M M M M M M M
4 tbsp olive oil 2 large aubergines sea salt and pepper 2 red peppers cored and chopped 2 large onions diced 2 large potatoes chopped 1.4kg chicken cut into 8 pieces 3 tomatoes cored and chopped 4 cloves garlic peeled and chopped oregano and thyme seasoning 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper 3 bay leaves
Method: 1. Preheat oven to 200ºC/ 400ºF/Gas 6. Pour 2 tbsp olive oil into a large baking dish. Add the aubergines, potatoes and salt, place in oven and allow to colour, stirring occasionally. 2. Add the red pepper and onions; allow to bake 10 minutes longer, stirring often. 3. Add the chicken pieces, tomatoes, garlic, thyme, oregano, bay leaves, cayenne, pepper, and 2 remaining tbsp olive oil; mix well. Return baking dish to the oven and bake until chicken is done, (for about 30 mins longer) turning pieces once during cooking. You can make this dish on top of the stove in a cast-iron pan; however, the oven is preferable because it dries the vegetables and doesn’t allow a lot of moisture to accumulate. If you’re entertaining a crowd, you can easily double or triple the recipe. Just be sure you have enough baking dishes and oven space.

Celebrating 225 years of excellence People visit solicitors at the most
stressful times in their lives when emotions are running high - births, deaths, marriages, moving house, buying or selling a business - so finding a solicitor that is compassionate as well as competent can make all the difference. Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston operates out of a welcoming Victorian mansion and coach house with stunning landscaped gardens. And the building and gardens feature centrally in their relationships with clients. This year Tyndallwoods celebrates its 225th anniversary with the commissioning of an exquisite wire and bead tree - a representation of the company’s logo. The team has proudly served generations of families in the area through their best and worst of times relocating to their current premises in Woodbourne Road in 1998. The firm prides itself on providing a highly qualified, regulated and insured service so that clients can place absolute and complete trust in them.
w www.tyndallwoods.co.uk
They carry the Law Society quality kite mark Lexcel, an accreditation that indicates quality in relation to legal practice management standards. The peaceful gardens are home to a cluster of bee hives that house up to 60,000 bees each, as well as a memorial orchard planted in memory of former Managing Partner Ken Dyer, the tree of light which represents the memory of the dearly departed, and the snowdrop beds which are planted to remember lost loved ones. Judy Dyke, Managing Director of Tyndallwoods said: “The gardens provide a calming diversion for clients and their families at times of intense emotional trauma. “The historical building and coach house provide calm and comfortable spaces for mediation to take place - enabling people to have separate spaces if some time-out is needed. “Trees and bees both represent life and sustenance and we embrace those ideals and aim to provide a homely, nurturing and professional service to our clients.”
The team at Tyndallwoods not only raise money for local charities such as Edwards Trust and Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice - they also take responsible patron roles and get fully immersed in the growth and successful service provision of those charities.

Ashwood Nurseries in 2010, all of which sat alongside the colonies of Cyclamen hederifolium and Cyclamen coum that have always been planted in the open garden at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The plants used for the award-winning display have now been returned to their homes in the nursery, but will appear in the Alpine house at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens for visitors to admire.
The Home consists of a double bedroom with an en-suite, a twin room, a family bathroom and an open plan kitchen-diner and lounge. If you’d like more information about how QEHB Charity supports patients, please go to www.qehb.org or call 0121 371 4852.

Worth their weight in Gold Birmingham Botanical Gardens has won gold for its National Collection of Cyclamen, a first for the educational charity. Nigel Hopes who heads up the management of the National Collection, alongside the rest of the gardening team including, Wayne Williams, Chris Howell, Eddie Adams and Josh Tranter worked tirelessly on the display, pulling it together in around 6 weeks, managed to come away with a gold medal despite racing against the clock. National Collection status is a fantastic achievement in itself; the onsite team has been working on their Cyclamen collection since 2005. At this time, the collection of Cyclamen was quite small at the gardens, with only a few potted specimens. Nigel then brought in plants from his own collection and started propagating seed donations from

Teenage Cancer Trust’s Young Person’s Unit (YPU) at QEHB, and is just minutes away from the hospital. As QEHB’s YPU is one of very few units in the UK, people can travel from afar to be with their loved ones meaning they may need to book hotels last minute, and for long periods of time. This can cause great expense and stress to families, in a time which is already difficult.
Home for families of children with cancer Saturday 17 February saw the official opening of SACA’s Home from Home. SACA, the Sikh Arts and Cultural Association is a community organisation which promotes social cohesion through sport, whilst raising funds for children’s charities. Each year they take on the gruelling challenge of cycling 130 miles from Birmingham to London, raising thousands of pounds in the process. The Home from Home is for the parents and families of young people receiving treatment for cancer on the
The new wine shop and deli on Greenfield Crescent in Edgbaston Village opened on 15 February. Located in the heart of Edgbaston Village, it is an exciting addition for the vibrant leisure and lifestyle location. Phil Innes, the founder and owner said: “The new 1,840 square feet venue is much larger than our first bar in Great Western Arcade, so as well as stocking over 400 different bottles or wine, we will also be selling craft beer on draught and by the bottle and introducing wider beverages, including a specially curated Gin menu by the Gintleman Carl Hawkins. “We will be providing outstanding deli sandwiches, and deli boards, with a special focus on British produce, along with wine and beverages that can either be bought to take home or enjoyed in the new venue.”

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY Emerging from sleeping bags on flattened cardboard boxes, the fund-raisers from the day nursery in Highfield Road said the annual challenge had also highlighted the plight of the homeless at this time of the year.
Inspirational colouring Harborne’s Lisa Jackson is drawing on her design skills to become the successful author of an adult colouring book aimed at combating stress. As an assistant building technologist for Coleshill-based house builder Bovis Homes, Lisa works closely with architects and surveyors in the creation of new homes. Lisa’s dexterity with pen and ink, combined with her passion for sketching, has now inspired her to launch her first book, ‘Inspirational Quotes Adult Colouring Book: creative art therapy for adults’. Featuring her hand-drawn illustrations of birds and flowers, it has proved popular with Lisa’s colleagues at Bovis Homes and attracted five-star ratings from customers on Amazon. “Adult colouring books are a fantastic way to switch off because you’re concentrating on the drawing in front of you instead of day-to-day life,” explained Lisa. The book is for sale from Amazon for £5.99.
Kay Stevens, Highfield’s practitioner, said: “The Alzheimer’s Society has been chosen for a year-long fundraising drive at the nursery because we all know someone who is living with dementia so whatever the night brings we are here until morning.”

Psycology of
Colour G
rey is the only colour that has no direct psychological properties, it is however quite suppressive. Living in the regularly overcast Midlands can give one a deep yearning for colour and excitement especially outdoors. If we can’t have clear skies and blazing sunshine every day we can at least find a way to inject some vibrancy into our gardens and invite in the birds and butterflies. We are most fortunate to have lush, rich soil here in Brum and it seems a shame not to take full advantage of it, so take a gander at these fantastically bright and beautiful flowers and the psychological benefits that they can have for your garden.
Yellow Yellow is the strongest colour psychologically. The right shade of yellow will lift the spirits and even boost self esteem, it is the colour of confidence and optimism.
Red Red has been proven to raise the pulse rate, and to stimulate
excitement. It is quite a confrontational colour, having the property of appearing closer than it truly is, but it is usually psychologically perceived as thrilling rather than frightening.
Pink Pink has a similar effect to red, being a tint of red, but it soothes while it stimulates. This softening of the attention grabbing red makes it a more relaxing colour for the iris.
White White is the colour of purity, innocence, wholeness and completion. Walking out into a garden filled with blossoming Gypsophila has the feeling of clarity, freshness and peace.
Violet Violet is known to take awareness to a higher level of thought, even into the realms of spiritual values. It encourages deep contemplation, and affords us a significant break from daily routine. Wisteria is a popular violet choice in English gardens and grows enthusiastically with very little attention.
Blue Blue is a mentally soothing colour and calms our minds. Strong blues will stimulate clear thought while soft blues will aid concentration.

A Spacious En-Suite Creates a Dream Bathroom
Roman Bathrooms
R oman Bathrooms are experts at making
the most of small bathrooms and sometimes recommend taking space from an adjacent room to create a dream bathroom, as was the case with Mrs Simpson. With a wish list that included a freestanding bath and a walk-in shower it was necessary to extend into the bedroom, taking some space from the fitted wardrobes too. “It was all so worth it,” says Carol. “I had complete trust in Roman Bathrooms as they came well recommended from a friend and they were taking total responsibility for all the works, so I knew they were in control.” The new bathroom is stylish and luxurious. There is masses of new storage and the room is light filled with a recessed mirror
and a mirrored cabinet. There is plenty of space for a generous vanity unit, the walk-in shower and the freestanding bath. The project included building new walls, re-building the fitted wardrobes in the bedroom and a major re-working of the plumbing, with works taking 3 weeks in total, but Carol was delighted with how smooth and stress free it all was. “The workmen were punctual, they tidied up after themselves and they were cheerful too,” adds Carol. Carol is delighted she accepted her friend’s recommendation and has already returned the favour, by recommending Roman Bathrooms to several more people since!

Waterproof any pair of shoes by applying bees wax.

. Use a hanging shoe rack to store cleaning supplies more efficiently.
3. Place a rubber band over an
open can of paint to wipe off the brush and therefore avoid spills and drips down the side of the can.
4. Stack clothes vertically to see
them all!
5. Do something unusual when
locking your door before a long trip in order to remember that you’ve definitely done it.
6.
Freeze grapes and put them into your wine to keep your beverage cold without watering it down.

Probates: Where do you Start? Organising the deceased estate of a loved one is often a stressful and distressing time. The probate process can seem quite a daunting prospect; where do you start, how do you effectively administer an estate and its contents? Ellie Hill from Biddle & Webb auctioneers said: “As a probate and asset valuer I am used to visiting households across the Midlands, assisting executors and solicitors with the estate administration process. I am always surprised by the sheer variety of assets that are valued for probate; from tractors to stamp collections, stationary engines to diamond rings. “In recent years, at Biddle & Webb we have expanded our probate services to include house clearance, property auctions and estate management. This combination of services provides a comprehensive solution for executors looking to finalise an estate efficiently and in confidence: we are able to appraise contents, monetise assets and clear the property ready for sale. With the introduction of our Property Auctions, Biddle & Webb can now monetise the estate itself – our most recent property achieved £12,000 over estimate, selling for £147,000 in our February Property Auction”
Biddle & Webb is in the process of developing a piece of software that enables executors and solicitors to track the progress of an estate from their phone, computer or tablet. The app allows users to navigate inventories, manage bequests and instruct items for sale or for clearance: granting executors more control over the probate process. If you are an executor in need of a valuation for probate, contact Cheryl Field at Biddle & Webb on 0121 455 8042 for more information.
