A taste of the country in the heart of the

city

Winterbourne House and Garden is a haven of tranquility, tucked away between the Bristol Road and Birmingham University, where you can escape the stress of city life to take a leisurely stroll around the Edwardian villa and its grounds.

The estate was bequeathed to Birmingham University in 1944 and students still come down to collect samples from the extensive botanical collections. As well as the 1903 Arts and Crafts house packed full of antiques, a botanic garden with over 6000 plant species, a woodland walk, a hazelnut tunnel and a 1930s Japanese bridge, there are a wide range of activities for the inquisitive and adventurous of all ages. Inside the house are interactive exhibitions which tell the fascinating story of the estate and the people who lived there, including Margaret Nettlefold, who designed the Grade II listed garden. The family firm, GKN, was once the largest screw, nut and bolt manufacturer in the world. Occasional free tours reveal more about the furniture, toys, photographs, clothes and belongings on display throughout the rooms, which are all laid out as they would have been a hundred years ago. There are also regular demonstrations of traditional crafts such as weaving, spinning and dyeing and in the Coach House Gallery you can see the work of modern artists, all inspired by the natural world. At Winterbourne this summer...

Art exhibitions: June - James Morgan, Flowers and Plants July - Maggie Leaver, Watercolours and Oils Workshops: 22nd June, 11am - 4pm - Camera Obscura 9th July, 10am - 3.30pm - Garden Design Visit winterbourne.org.uk for more information.

If your visit inspires you to bring a little of Winterbourne into your own domestic estate, the Centre for Horticulture runs courses and workshops on a range of gardening skills. Or you can simply pick up a cake in the tea room and a postcard in the gift shop. by Alexandra Taylor

Carnival Time Harborne Carnival is the UK’s second biggest street carnival, after Notting Hill in London. It’s been running since 1998 and attracts around 70,000 people every year. For one day every summer, traffic is banished from Harborne High Street and replaced with stalls, stages and rides, providing food, fun and entertainment for the whole family.

Music

With three stages and a full day of packed performances on each, there’ll be plenty to get toes tapping and hands clapping, no matter what your musical taste. The carnival is a great showcase for local talent, with singers, bands and school groups taking to the stage. Expect Scottish pipers and rock music and everything in between.

Dance

Birmingham’s wonderfully diverse communities will be on display in spectacular fashion with talented performers demonstrating the best of global dance styles. No need to travel to enjoy traditional moves from Ireland, Asia and Latin America as well as cheerleaders, modern dance and ballroom classics.

Arts & Crafts

If strolling around stalls is more your thing, then you’ll be spoilt for choice. Dozens of local artisans will be offering up their wares - everything from jewellery and pottery to books and artwork. Many charities and community groups will also be setting out their stalls for you to find out about what they do and support their good work by picking up a bargain.

The Parade

The centrepiece of the event is the Carnival Parade at 4pm. Floats and marching bands take over the street, led by the Carnival Queen and her prince and princess, voted for by local schools. All this plus fairground rides, performing arts, vintage cars, displays, food and drink, play areas, games and competitions - it’s no wonder that in 2003 the Carnival was awarded the ‘Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for voluntary service by groups in the community’. To join this year’s party, head down to Harborne High Street from 9.30am on Sunday 19th June. by Alexandra Taylor

First impressions Your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you – and to smile with confidence is something that many people take for granted. And so they should. If you wear dentures then you just want to forget about them and get on with your life. You want dentures that do not look like dentures. And perhaps most of all, you want to be able to smile without worrying about your teeth. If you live in Harborne or Edgbaston then the good news is that there is a Clinical Dental Technician in Harborne that offers a personalised bespoke service where you are able to have a consultation with the person who will make or repair your dentures for you. Phill Morris runs the Confidents Denture Clinic on Albert Road and with his team he has been putting the smile back on people’s faces for over 30 years. Phill said: “I work directly with patients so they can discuss their needs with me. I am sure most denture wearers wish they could

speak to the person making their dentures and have adequate time to explain just how they want them to look. “The challenge in making dentures is to create a denture that doesn’t look like a denture. Working closely with the patient enables me to do that.” If you are in a hurry repairs can be made within 1 hour, while you wait. Or if it is a completely new set of dentures that you need then you are able to have them crafted by a technician to whom you can talk directly. For some advice or to make an appointment for a free initial consultation please call on :0121 426 3500 Confidents Denture Clinic 19 Albert Road, Harborne, B17 0AP

Time to update your will? As we move into the holiday season for many people it is a time to consider updating their Wills. Judy Dyke at Edgbaston based Tyndallwoods Solicitors is more than happy to offer this service.

However, according to Judy, this is also sadly a time of year when many people are involved in the administration of an estate. Judy advises: “Before booking the funeral do make sure that there are sufficient funds in a bank or building society that can be released to meet the costs incurred. “Bear in mind that if you expect a large number of guests at the crematorium you can ask the funeral directors to arrange an extended time for the service. “It is useful to remember the concept of the ‘Executors’ Year’ in making significant progress in the administration of an estate. Undue pressure may lead to errors. “And finally, consider placing Section 27 Trustee Act Notices to give the executors appropriate protection.”

The Harborne St Mary’s Hospice shop has launched a new bridal section with stunning brides’ gowns, bridesmaids’ dresses, grooms’ suits and even a section for mothers of the bride and hats. For something that is only worn once this is a great way to have a stunning outfit on a budget. The shop also has a new display of fantastic furniture available at really affordable prices. Making the most of Moseley It’s that time again! Moseley Festival, with it’s eclectic mix of talks, gigs, stalls, workshops, special offers, taster sessions, exhibitions and competitions, will be taking over the village from 1st to 10th July. The jewel in its crown is Mostly Jazz, Funk and Soul Festival which brings some seriously big names, and crowds, to our neighbourhood. One stage will be hosting acts such as De La Soul, Booker T, Craig Charles and Grandmaster Flash, while the other stage showcases up and coming performers. There will also be films, artist talks, music workshops, dance performances, live comedy and spoken word performances. To keep your energy up, there’s a wide range of food available - fill up with pizza, falafel, Caribbean dishes and delightfully naughty cakes, then wash it all down with ale, lager or a fancy cocktail. You’re welcome to bring your own picnic, but make sure you stick to soft drinks and decant your olives into plastic tubs - there’s a strict ‘no alcohol, no glass’ policy and you risk getting your delicacies confiscated on the door. Moseley Park is the perfect setting for a summer festival, with its gentle grassy slopes down to the stage area, and the lake shimmering behind. If you’d like year round access to its eleven acres of tranquility, then a festival ticket can get you a £10 discount on annual membership. There are various ticket choices - one-day, twoday or three-day entry as well as adult, child and family options. You can either buy online or avoid a booking fee by going down in person to the office on Fazeley Street before 9th July. If you’re deaf or disabled, you can also apply for a free wristband for a personal assistant. by Alexandra Taylor Details correct at time of going to press, check the following websites for up to date information. Anyone for tennis?

With this year’s Wimbledon Tennis Championship kicking off on 27th June, the country will be gripped by its annual bout of tennis fever. But there’s no need to travel to London or spend two weeks glued to the television to get your tennis fix. Here in south Birmingham we’re spoilt for choice, whether you’d rather watch others sweat or pick up a racket yourself. The Edgbaston Priory Club hosts one of the most prestigious pre-Wimbledon tournaments, the Aegon Classic. Starting on 11th June, many of the world’s top stars will be competing. Take a picnic and the kids and enjoy a whole day of high class tennis for as little as £10 for a full price adult ticket in the early stages of the competition. To play yourself, you can use the courts in Cannon Hill Park for free - just book online at birminghamparktennis.co.uk. Birmingham Park Tennis also offers group coaching, including sessions for ladies only, children, people with learning difficulties and people who use wheelchairs from as little as £2.50 a session. They also run competitions and leagues. You can also book a court and Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre, or make new friends at one of their daily community tennis sessions - no planning required, just turn up and play for just £6.90 per adult for a three hour session.

Information correct at time of going to press. More info at: Edgbaston Archery and Lawn Tennis Society: www.pitchero.com www.lta.org.uk www.edgbastonpriory.com

Another option is Edgbaston Archery and Lawn Tennis Society, the oldest lawn tennis club in the world. For an annual membership that works out at under £7 a week, the club offers twelve courts, a bar with regular social events and access to private coaching. So, whatever your age, ability or level of experience, grab your racket or your glass of Pimms and celebrate the best of English tennis in Birmingham this summer. By Alexandra Taylor

Gary Newbon

In an interview with Julia Parsons

A life in sport journalism

This journalist, interviewer and broadcaster epitomizes ‘sports’ and ‘football’. He’s lived and breathed it for the last 52 years of which 48 have been in TV but interestingly in our discussion he revealed it was his relationship with the late Brian Clough that meant a great deal and a memorable incident in 1999 with Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United. Gary tells the story: “They were losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich in Barcelona but in the stoppages Man U scored twice and extraordinarily - won. I interviewed Alex straight after the end of the match and I’d say he was in a state of shock - his mind had gone blank. He shook his head and said… ‘Football, bloody hell’. That has gone down into legend.” Gary lives in Solihull, having raised his family here – a daughter who has followed him into journalism and twin boys – all with successful careers. He met his wife Katie 42 years ago in the newsroom at ATV. There’s plenty on the internet about Gary’s distinguished career from newspapers in Fleet Street to becoming Deputy Head of ITV sport and Controller of Sport for Central Television for 23 years and there are many top familiar names who can thank him for being the catalyst for their career beginnings. Ask Gary about his opinion on a youngster today following in his career footsteps and he shakes his head. It’s so different now with the demise of newspapers and regional TV. But he recommends work experience and attitude - accepting being the gofer

and being resourceful. Taking media studies courses can lead to disappointment. It’s a tough world to get into now.

He feels football has changed, affected by the market forces created by money - thanks to TV fees and demanding sports agents. Now in his early 70s, Gary is undeterred at the travelling required to get to work at Sky Sports. He is currently presenting Sporting Heroes, a series in which Gary interviews in-depth, the legends of sport. Does he want to retire? - does he heck! He loves his work and life is good whilst he can continue in the sports world he’s passionate about. An extended version of this article is available at our online site: www.swanpublishing.org
