Kings Heath Park awarded £15,000 Local parent Wendy Turner has been successful in rallying the Kings Heath Community, and has secured a £15000 “makeover” bursary for the playground in Kings Heath park. The bursary was awarded by Robinsons Fruit Shoots, who launched a nationwide campaign via their parenting website Readyforten.com. Over a thousand playgrounds across the country were nominated by parents, before a panel of judges short listed just 20 for a public online vote to decide the 5 winners. Wendy said, “I wish to extend a huge thank you to everyone who voted, and to all of the schools and local businesses
who helped publicise the event in their newsletters and shop windows. The weeks of pavement pounding and pestering people have paid off, and it will be wonderful for all of the many children who use the playground to have some new equipment to play on.” The equipment will hopefully be in place before the beginning of the Summer holidays.

Summer in the Garden
Summer has come to Martineau Gardens, a community garden in Edgbaston. The two and a half acre site is managed by a charity and tended by a team of gardening enthusiasts, the majority of which are volunteers. The Gardens are open to the public every day except Sunday and you can enjoy a hot drink beside the Pavilion for which donations are welcomed. Martineau Gardens is a haven for wildlife. Despite its close proximity to the city centre, the area provides a ‘green corridor’ giving wildlife a lifeline to move through the urban sprawl. As custodians of this precious oasis, the charity has created a Nature Trail and Guide to explain to visitors how the Gardens are managed for wildlife. The Guide also illustrates what habitats can be seen and what species to look out for. The Trail leads visitors along a numbered track through the wooded area of the Gardens (designated a Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation
or SLINC) before emerging by the wildflower meadows and Bird Hide. Pictured below is number 9 on the trail, the Summer Meadow, a carpet of Red Campion with splashes of Ox-eye Daisy and a home to brimstone butterflies, damselflies and red-tailed bumble bees. Later in the season taller plants take over like hogweed, teasel, nettle-leaved bellflower and gromwell. We also have a ‘bee hotel’ in this area, a small open box with tubes, which was installed by OPAL (Open Air Laboratory) to provide a nest for wild bees which help our own honey bees with pollination. An inspiring place The Gardens aim to act as a source of inspiration for the sustainable use of resources and other environmental issues. With that in mind special events, environmental courses and activities are held. If you’re interested in leading a sustainable lifestyle but don’t know where to start, why not try out a one day course as a taster? All the courses take place in the beautiful surroundings of the Gardens, and are led by trained professionals, experts in their field. The courses are one day (except for Herbal Medicine), they run from 10am until 5pm and cost ÂŁ60. To book a place or read course descriptions, contact course organizers, the charity LILI (the Low Impact Living Initiative) on 01296 714 184 or via www.lowimpact.org Pictured above, environmental artist and tutor, Lizzie Bean, preparing the Earth Oven at Martineau Gardens. In September, Lizzie will be teaching students how to bake bread, pizza and other delicacies in the outdoors.
Martineau Gardens is located at 27 Priory Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B5 7UG opposite the Priory Hospital and five minutes walks from the mac. Limited parking is available on site or buses 1, 61, 63. X62, x64, 47 and 45 will bring you close to the Gardens.

Sarehole Mill opens millpond to public With a £30,000 investment from Birmingham City Council Sarehole Mill has transformed the area around the millpond creating pathways and a viewing platform, making it a delightful place to walk around and see the mill from the pond-side. This has enabled people to make a very visible and real connection between the water and the mill – previously the only view of the pond was from a very small window on the first floor. The renovation has also provided much needed access to the first floor of the mill for wheelchair users and the less able. The mill is characterised by many narrow steep stairways, a delight for many, but impassable for some. Without having to go up any stairs people can now gain access to the first floor – arguably the most interesting floor with the mill-wheel and engine room.
This is the first step towards curator Irene de Boo’s long term vision of running Sarehole Mill as a working mill, grinding and selling organic stone-ground flour. The next phase to achieve this goal is to clean up the mill-pond which is becoming overgrown with reeds and is badly clogged up with silt. This is a huge undertaking which will cost an estimated £250,000, a figure that Irene is determined to raise through a package of funding during the coming years. Sarehole Mill is open Tuesday to Sunday from 12.00 – 4.00pm. Access to all outside areas and the café is free, and to go inside costs just £3 for adults or £2 concessions and under 16s are free.

Moseley Festival : a child of the 70s and still going strong …..! Pam Rutter, a driving force behind the organisation of Moseley Festival looks back at its history. In those early years, the organisers called it the Moseley Arts Festival and it was centred at the St Martin’s Catholic Community Centre on the corner of Church Road (now the Hamza Mosque). Fast forward to the 21st century. The present organising group has been together since 2003 and shows no sign of flagging! Pam said: “This year the Moseley Festival programme is looking great, representing the energy, enthusiasm and talent of so many local people.”
Moseley Festival 2011 runs from Friday 8 July till Sunday 17 and includes such events as : Friday 8: Partners in Crime at O’Neill’s Saturday 9: Street Fair, Open Day with a brass band at Moseley Park, Magenta about Town
Anyone who has lived in Moseley for more than a year or two will know that its annual community Festival celebrates the vibrancy of our lovely, lively suburb and brings together thousands of local people. Did you know, though, that there has been a Moseley Festival almost every year since 1974?
Sunday 10: Moseley Mastermind Quiz Tuesday 12: Cheeky Monkey Comedy Club Edinburgh Preview at the Cross, Moseley’s Got Talent’ at the Prince of Wales Wednesday 13: Morris Dancing on the Green Friday 15: NotSoYoung (Neil Young Tribute Band) at Moseley All Services Club Saturday 16: St Mary’s Choir and Singers at St Mary’s Church Weekends of 9/10 and 16/17: Art Trail Plus many, many more events besides. Build your own Greenhouse out of old windows Karen Leach, a local Moseleyite has taken the concept ‘on a shoestring budget’ to its fullest extreme with her construction of a greenhouse out of ‘found’ objects. She explains all. “Maybe it’s a Constant Gardener-esque attempt not to think too much about anything, or maybe it’s middle age – but I’ve been becoming increasingly obsessed with our garden of late, and so found myself hankering after a greenhouse in which to nurture tender seedlings and grow tomatoes out of the blight-carrying wind,” says Karen. “But the idea of buying one of those budget plastic ones that lasts a season was depressing, and so were the prices of proper wooden ones. My tomatoes seemed destined to remain hunched in a coldframe.” “Inspiration struck when I cycled past a skip full of lovely old wooden windows in Moseley, and we now have a beautiful greenhouse built entirely out of windows that would otherwise have ended-up up the chimney of Tyseley incinerator. It took a few months to collect enough windows (we did ask!), including some with coloured glass and one huge, arched beauty from Chantry Rd which forms the roof. “There’s a minimal foundation of a layer of bricks (a quarry tiled floor is the next project), and then the windows are attached to each other simply with long screws from one frame into the next – the roof attaches in the same way, strengthened with a broad supporting post.”
Karen stressed that even for a DIY novice like her it was relatively easy. The hardest part was making all the odd sized windows fit into a neat rectangular structure, but she found a puzzle-solving satisfaction about that too. Oh, and there was a certain amount of channel-cutting to ensure that rain can drain off the roof properly – but she advises that if you choose your roof windows more for practicality and less for aesthetics, that might be less of a problem. Karen made shelving out of discarded pallets and has now had the satisfaction of seeing her first generation of seedlings grow up in the added warmth, as well as an excellent crop of tomato plants. So if you are hankering after a greenhouse but can’t see when you’ll have the funds to afford it then this is definitely a very rewarding way of getting a beautiful and functional greenhouse almost for free.

My Kings Heath hits the world wide web Owned by Swan Publishing this delightful local community magazine has now found its way onto the internet. So if you remember an article or advert from a previous issue and can’t lay your hands on it then just go to www.swanpublishing.org where you will find back copies dating back to its launch in May last year. And if you run a business or work for an organisation that sees Kings Heath as a target audience then you can find out all you need to know about the incredibly low cost advertising packages available. You can also look at distribution maps which show exactly where the magazine is delivered each month. My Kings Heath is now taking a new direction with a greater emphasis on community news, so if you belong to an
organisation and want to get your voice heard or have a story you feel would be of interest to the local community then please do get in touch. And if there is anything you would like to see in the magazine that is not already there then please let us know, we are always on the look out for new ways to improve the magazine. Having run the Moseley Directory since its launch in February 2006, editor Amy Watson, a Moseley local, launched My Kings Heath in March 2009 and Edgbaston Directory in February 2010. These three magazines complement each other perfectly and provide a valuable means for businesses to promote themselves to their local area.

Supporting our local hospital Harborne based Tyndallwoods Solicitors is helping to promote a campaign to raise money for the QE.
Solicitor Judy Dyke explained: “What a pleasure it was to visit the fabulous Accident & Emergency Department at our new Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Parking was easy, the entrance and reception desk welcoming and the care given was 5 star.
The objective of Troop Aid is to supply ‘basic essentials’ in a Grab Bag when service casualties return from serving their country overseas without their personal effects or clothing.
“I saw the need for the QE ‘Plus’ Appeal. The aim of the appeal is to raise money to pay for items ‘over and above’ those provided by the NHS including the children’s play area in A&E.
Items in the Grab Bag include T-shirt and shorts, washing and shaving kit, towel, face flannel, tooth paste, tooth brush, shower mules, socks, underwear, pen and paper.
“The delightful Triage Nurse Claire reminded me of the work carried out by the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in the hospital supported by the charity Troop Aid,” she said.
