LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! The children of Kings Heath had better get set for a life in front of or behind the cameras. Young Film Makers is bringing to South Birmingham the chance for children aged 8 to 16 to star in and make movies.

They even allow you to try it first to see if you like it. It sounds like an opportunity not to be missed.

They can get their hands on professional cameras and with guidance from experienced filmmakers create, act in, direct and write their own films. Young Film Makers have been running film schools for over 5 years and believe that children should be given the chance to learn and enjoy one of the most exciting and rewarding careers in the world. 7

Winter Wonderland at Martineau Gardens Wrap up warm, pull on your outdoor boots and enjoy a walk around a winter wonderland at Martineau Gardens this month. Lots of animals will be coming into the Gardens, as they look for shelter and forage for food to sustain them through the winter months. Food is provided for birds and there are several bird feeding areas. Take your binoculars (or borrow a pair) and enjoy a session in the bird hide. You can also borrow a guide to help identify different species who visit. You can look out for tracks of nocturnal and shy animals in the mud or snow. Birds, foxes, badgers and other small mammals are always about looking for food. Younger visitors can follow the Explorers’ Trail – a new quiz which encourages every budding nature detective to look out for wildlife clues.

King of Curries A cold Monday evening in winter, where better to get a warming meal than Kings Indian Dining on York Road in Kings Heath. Kings is a breath of fresh air when it comes to choosing a good curry house. It hasn’t followed the trend to go upmarket and push up all the prices, yet it is also a far cry from your usual budget curry house with sticky carpets and flock wallpaper. Kings has hit the nail on the head which is probably why it has been serving up tasty curries to so many loyal regulars for over 20 years. The décor is smart and simple with wooden floors and leather seating. The menu is extensive, with a separate menu dedicated to vegetarian dishes. There is a wide choice of fish and meat specialities and all of the usual dishes you would expect to find. The restaurant is not licensed so you can 16

take along your own drinks which all helps to create an affordable night out. For company I took along my friend who has already eaten Kings’ food many times before because her parents in law have had a take-away from Kings every Friday night for about ten years! We were presented with complementary popadoms and sauces while we looked at the menu and the warm and welcoming manager Anjab helped us to choose some dishes that we have not had before. In the spirit of sampling the food for the sake of this review we ended up choosing 4 main course dishes to share as well as two starters.

So, we chose: Star ters – Chilli Paneer and Salmon Tikka Mains – Seabass Bahar (grilled with medium spices and served with rice and a delicious curry sauce), Jingha Hera Payaz (a really lovely spicy king prawn dish cooked with lemon grass and tamarind sauce), Paneer Madame (sizzling in a pan with broad beans, cumin and fresh tomatoes) and the Chicken Korai (succulent chicken in a thick spicy sauce served in a cast iron dish)

why have one dish when you can have two, or three or four? The chicken was perfectly tender, the nice big chunks of paneer tasted great and the prawns were amazingly soft and tender. Altogether a roaring success. Needless to say we didn’t manage it all but the waiter packed the leftovers into takeaway boxes for us so that sorts out lunch the next day. As well as being a great place to eat out, Kings has a faithful following of regular take-away customers who rely on their prompt delivery service. Kings Indian Dining is at:

The food all tasted so good. Each dish had its own distinct flavours and they went together really well. It was difficult to pick a favourite but if I had to I would say the Seabass Bahar. I like fish but I don’t want it to be too fishy. This dish was really delicate and melt in the mouth and the sauce was slightly sweet – I could have happily had just that. But no,

Max Griesbach, Year 10 winner, who spoke passionately against animal testing

Children Speak Passionately About A Better World Children at an Edgbaston school have voiced opinions and concerns about society and the environment around them, discussing subjects normally confined to adult conversation. The students were taking part in the Lines Aloud annual public speaking competition, supported by the Rt Hon Clare Short MP, at St George’s School recently. The topics included ‘Footballers and their earnings’, ‘Does prison work?’ and ‘Are the Royal Family bad for Britain?’ There were also presentations based on race issues, whether to ban smoking completely, the ethics of animal testing, and several views concerning the summer riots in Birmingham. The students at St George’s School, ranging from age eight to fifteen years, had been working on their speeches since the start of term. Each child had been allowed to choose the subject matter and was encouraged to conduct 20

meaningful research, giving consideration to both sides of the argument before reaching their own personal conclusion. The external judging panel - DJ and radio presenter Elliott Webb, actor Colin Buchanan and the Head of English at Queenswood Girl’s School in Hatfield, Paul-James Merrell - were all astounded by the arguments put forward and the passion with which the students delivered their speeches. Each presentation was judged on the choice of topic, the content of the speech, the use of language and the expression and overall delivery. Winners in each year group were awarded prizes but all of those who took part were given due recognition for their hard work.

But you don’t need to wait for Valentine’s Day to enjoy what Winterbourne has to offer. The house and gardens are open seven days a week for you to enjoy.

On the ground floor you can see how the decor would have appeared when the Nettlefolds occupied the house over 100 years ago, with the study and drawing room boasting beautiful Arts & Crafts furniture and antiques.

So if you are at a loss for something to do then why not take a step back

An exhibition room highlights the importance of Winterbourne in the

community with interactive exhibits which tell the stories of the house and its occupants through the people who lived and worked there over the years. In the study, learn more about John Nettlefold’s work in the family firm GKN - the largest screw, nut and bolt manufacturer in the world – together with his pioneering work as the chair of the first housing committee in Birmingham. Hands-on exhibits in the drawing room reveal who influenced Margaret Nettlefold to design Winterbourne’s Grade II listed garden, with its sandstone rock garden, unusual nut walk and beautiful colour-themed borders.

The Gardens Winterbourne is one of the best surviving examples of an Edwardian Arts and Crafts suburban villa garden. Offering colour and interest throughout the year, the seven acre Grade II listed garden is home to a beautiful walled garden, striking colour themed borders, original sandstone rock garden and stream side planting. The garden also displays plants from around the globe with collections of plants from China, North and South America and the alpine areas of the world. There is also a programme of public garden events running throughout the year including open days, special interest tours, local heritage days, music concerts and an Edwardian fete.

Exhibitions Brenda Boardman - Textile Light boxes opens on Monday 6 February and runs until Friday 16 March. Brenda explores processes such as dyeing, painting, printing, stitching and the use of light in her colourful and creative exhibitions.

Art in the Gardens An open-air exhibition of six carved and lettered works in slate and oak by six of the UK’s foremost lettering and memorial artists is on show in the gardens. From a beautiful Solar Seat to a Haiku Triptych, these fine exhibits are part of The Memorial Arts Charity’s evolving collection of works on memorial themes to be permanently on display at Winterbourne and five other major sites.
