Volunteer It Yourself An ambitious new national programme aimed at giving young people aged 14 upwards the chance to gain accredited construction skills while refurbishing their local youth clubs is being rolled out across the city, and was launched at All Saints Centre in King’s Heath in March. VIY is backed by a dynamic partnership of both public and private organisations and aims to make real and lasting improvements to communities and the lives of young people. The Volunteer It Yourself (VIY) scheme is run by young people’s charity London Youth, working with The CoSponsorship Agency, an organisation that specialises in pulling together crosssector partnerships, and is backed by a £940,000 Big Lottery Fund grant. It will see young people renovating 47 youth clubs across England and Wales, receiving mentoring from local Wickes trade customers and gaining Kate Smart, Kings Heath Town Centre Manager said, “We are really proud that 10
Volunteer It Yourself scheme. It is a real opportunity for young people to take an active role, and to make a difference to their environment and our shared community. The All Saints Youth Project and we couldn’t be more thrilled.” The training that the young people receive as part of VIY will all be accredited by City & Guilds, to assure its quality and ensure the participants get the best out of their experience. The New Look Billesley Common Billesley Common is looking fantastic this spring due to work by both the city council and the volunteers from The Valley Riverside Project. A recent big clean up with Moseley Rugby Club has spruced the common up and it is hoped that the dragon

In this issue’s ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ feature we meet Julie Russell, Solicitor Partner who specialises in property litigation, dealing with all types of disputes that relate to land ownership or occupation. Julie acts for a variety of clients, including commercial landlords and tenants; residential landlords and long leaseholders, and some social landlords. She therefore sees both sides of the story and says that this helps with the advice she can give. She stresses that as often as possible disputes are resolved using mediation or arbitration, rather than court proceedings. This helps to reduce the cost and stress, as well as speeding up the process. It is also particularly useful where the parties are in a continuing relationship, such as that of landlord and tenant. As Julie sees it, the main issues faced by commercial tenants in today’s High Street include rental affordability and costly repair and maintenance of buildings. In some cases she has helped her clients to secure rental reductions and rent free periods as part of a lease renewal procedure. On the other hand, the concerns commercial landlords face in the current economy include rent not being paid and tenants going into administration. In both these situations speed and understanding your options is of the essence. Specsavers puts pupils in the frame Specsavers in Kings Heath is encouraging parents to ensure that they get their children’s eyesight tested. The store, which prides itself in providing expert and value for money eye care, is run by director Peter Squire. He says: ‘Regular eye examinations are vital, as undetected problems with vision performance in reading and sports that require hand-eye co-ordination. ‘We recommend that children have their old or as soon as they can match pictures or point at things, as the earlier common childhood vision problems are discovered the better the chance of correcting them.’ Most infants and pre-school children have regular vision screening as part of their routine developmental checks. These early tests are invaluable, but are not as thorough as a full eye 16

The hydrotherapy pool at Acorns Hospice
Supporting Acorn Children's Hospice Acorns Children’s Hospice provides holistic, specialised care to children and young people with life limiting and life threatening conditions (which means they are not likely to reach adulthood). The charity also supports the family at every stage of their child’s life and beyond into bereavement. In 2012, TLC Lottery raised over £130,000 for Acorns, enough to fund a physiotherapist at each of its three West Midlands hospices, one of which is located in Selly Oak in Birmingham, for one year. Physiotherapists provide vital care for children with a range of life limiting conditions. They use different techniques to assist with pain management and movement, and help with muscle, joint, bone, soft tissue or respiratory problems. 22
Physiotherapists also give the children therapy sessions in the hydrotherapy pool. Hydrotherapy is a relaxing and therapeutic experience for a child, and can improve both their mental and physical wellbeing. The warm water helps ease stiff muscles and joints, actively reduces pain and offers an otherwise impossible sense of freedom and movement.

Community Garden, Martineau Gardens in Edgbaston actively encourage bees to the Gardens to help with the pollination The Gardens have a cluster of traditional bee hives in the woodland area which you can observe. You may even meet the Gardens’ bee keeper John Gale tending the bees. Pictured here, John inspects the bees after a month of harsh weather. The smoker device he is using encourages the bees to which makes them drowsy and easier for the bee keeper to lift out the combs.
