Kings Heath wins Silver Gilt at RHS Britain in Bloom “Bustling, busy and fascinating describe Kings Heath very well…an urban village with its own distinct character”. Those were the words of the national Britain in Bloom judges in awarding Kings Heath Silver Gilt in the Urban Community category at the annual Britain in Bloom awards. After winning Gold in Heart of England in Bloom 2011, Kings Heath was nominated to represent the region in the national finals this year. Kings Heath finished third in the Urban Community category awards and was praised for a wide array of achievements, including: •

Engagement with schools, particularly where horticulture was being used as a learning aid for children

Many businesses supported the campaign with their own floral displays

Initiatives that demonstrate Kings Heath’s drive to become Birmingham’s green capital

The environment was very clean, even in the exceptionally busy areas

Initiatives to celebrate local heritage such as the Guitar bed and Walk of Fame (in York Road)

Kings Heath’s success in Britain in Bloom is the fourth major horticultural award for Kings Heath this year after winning Silver Gilt in Heart of England in Bloom, Silver Gilt for Fox Hollies School in the Heart of England in Bloom Schools Competition and a Level 3 Award for the Community Centre in Heart of England in Bloom ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ competition. In addition to Kings Heath’s success, Birmingham was awarded Gold in the ‘Large City’ category and Cannon Hill Park, just outside Kings Heath was judged best public park. 5

Interview with a bear If you thought Togademus was just a lovely toy shop on Poplar Road in Kings Heath, then think again. It is also home to an extraordinary bear whose name just happens to be Togademus too. What a co-incidence! Togademus the bear is occasionally seen in the shop and whenever he’s there he insists on giving every customer 10% off. If you follow him on Twitter you’ll always know when he’ll be there, or keep a close eye on the shop window where he loves to sit. We sent along our lead reporter to find out more. Christmas is a very busy time for a toy shop how do you think you will cope? Oh, the shop is most fun when it’s full of people so we don’t mind at all. It is lovely to see happy children playing with the toys. What kind of toys do you have on your shelves this year? Proper toys! The kind for children to live with, play with, learn from and enjoy, especially lots of traditional and wooden toys. The shop looks quite up-market from outside – is it expensive? Not at all. Some of the toys are only £1 and most of the toys that people buy are between £5 and £10. But we do have some really special toys too that cost a bit more.

14

So, Togademus, is it your shop then? I couldn’t really say that, my family do most of the work. I see. And can people find out about the shop before arriving? Well there’s the website. It’s www.togademus.co.uk and I know they are always putting photos on there so people can see new toys when they arrive. And it’s got opening times and directions as well. Cool. So, finally, what are you hoping for this Christmas? Oh I’m easy to please – I just like to see happy faces.

Dignity in dementia Behind the beautiful and slightly grand façade of Sunrise Senior Living in Edgbaston you might simply assume there lays an efficient, high quality care home. You would be right to think high quality and efficient, but in reality this care home is much more. It has been designed to be as homely and comforting as possible. And the “Reminiscence” neighbourhood, which is where the residents with dementia live, is a home from home even down to the friendly dog Zack along with a budgie and tropical fish.

there is a work station with tools and a dressing table with make-up, perfume, scarves and jewellery, ties and cufflinks.

As you walk around the spacious communal areas there are four life skills centres that are designed to remind people of the happy times that they often go back to when living with dementia. So there is a 1930’s office with antique furniture and typewriter, a nursery corner with a cot and a number of baby dolls & clothing,

The residents each have their own private en suite room with their memory box outside but much of the space is communal and there is always 30s and 40s music playing in the background. For some fresh air they can enjoy the beautiful terrace which overlooks a little bit of inner city countryside. There is also a

16

There is also a “Snoezelen” Room- an innovative area with lights, sounds and objects that have proven to create a calm and pleasant retreat from the busier activity areas.

herb garden and flowers to attend to for those residents with green fingers. Every Friday afternoon there is a social get-together for the whole community with a musician, singer or group. Residents and staff enjoy these together and people can sing along, dance, or just soak up the fun with a cup of tea and a piece of home made cake. Residents are encouraged to help out in the family kitchen area, as many, particularly the ladies, slip back to a time when they spent many an hour preparing meals for their families. So peeling potatoes, laying tables and washing up bring a sense of calm purpose to their day.

If you would like to know more you are welcome to visit and have a look around. For details contact Hedda Bourne or Richard Guy on 0121 455 1100.

The specially trained carers form rich relationships with residents and their families by getting to know them in every detail- from what time they like to wake up to favourite meals and activities. The neighbourhood is small and cosy which leads to a feeling of warm homeliness. If you have a parent, family member or neighbour who is diagnosed with dementia you are immediately faced with a number of very difficult choices. And you may be under the impression that a place like Sunrise is out of your reach financially. But in fact it is surprisingly affordable‌ just ask. Sunrise also provide Residential & Nursing care in their Assisted Living neighbourhood, and in a recent Quality Assurance Framework Audit they scored 99.5%.

Sunrise of Edgbaston

The Home of High Quality Care When it comes to senior care, Sunrise continues to set the standard. Our expertly trained staff and the high quality personalised care we offer are changing the way people think about senior living. Whether it’s assisted living, nursing care, or our groundbreaking Reminiscence neighbourhood bringing comfort to those living with dementia, everything we do is born from a commitment to providing only the very best care to seniors.

U3A comes to Kings Heath and Moseley The University of the Third Age is launching a local group for Kings Heath and Moseley on Tuesday 6 November at All Saints Church Hall, Kings Heath Village Square. U3A is a self help organisation for people no longer in full time employment. There are local U3As all over the UK, which are charities in their own right run entirely by volunteers. Between them U3As across the country offer the chance to study 300 subjects in such fields as arts, languages, music, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts, photography, dancing, walking - you name it. No qualifications are required for membership and none are given. On offer is the pleasure of shared interests, learning, and varied activities in a friendly and welcoming environment.

A typical U3A has about 250 members, but could be as small as 12 and as large as 2000, overall a community of one quarter of a million people with a zest for life. The groups themselves decide where and how regularly they would like to meet, where, and at what time. For a chance to see existing U3A groups, and to catch the warmth, pleasure and exhilaration of taking part, go to the website www. u3a.org.uk/u3a-videos.html to watch the delightful introductory film. To find out more and to feed your interests and enthusiasm into the new branch, you are invited to go along to the launch meeting from 2-4pm at All Saints Church Hall. 19

A group of young people who rely on the Focus Birmingham minibuses

TLC funds minibus for Focus Birmingham The grand sum of £126,000 raised by TLC Lottery for Focus Birmingham in 2011 is enough to fund the purchase and running costs of one of their minibuses. The minibuses provide a vital lifeline to the 90 people per day who use the day services at the charity’s centre in Woodville Road, Harborne, by picking them up and taking them back home. Service users are of all ages and have visual impairment and often other disabilities. The day service, which has been run by Focus for many years, provides social and learning opportunities. This service also provides families and carers with a much valued break. During the day the vans don’t stand idle; they are all over the place taking individuals out for activities, trips and the like. 20

Without the support of TLC Lottery players, it would be difficult to extend this wonderful service to so many people, some of whom would then be unable to attend the Centre. This is only a small part of the work of Focus Birmingham – more details can be found at www.focusbirmingham.org. uk or by telephoning 0121 478 5201 To join TLC Lottery with a chance to win £1,000 every week whilst supporting Focus Birmingham, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and Acorns Children’s Hospice visit www.tlclottery.co.uk or telephone 01564 825047.

Preserving Brandwood End Cemetery For the last seven years a keen group of local residents have worked tirelessly to improve the condition of the stunning historic Brandwood End Cemetary. And earlier this year their campaign stepped up a gear with the appointment of Alastair MacGowan as patron. Alistair has more than thirty family members interred at Brandwood End Cemetary. The Friends of Brandwood End Cemetery arose from a desire within the local community to maintain this landscaped Victorian cemetery, which as well as being a 24

place of rest is also a valued green open space in an urban setting. The Chapels were closed in the 1980s and have been the subject of vandalism and arson. The Friends’ main aim has always been the repair and restoration of the Chapels and, in conjunction with Birmingham City Council, are proposing to bid for Heritage Lottery funding in the near future. The Friends constantly strive to improve the appearance of the cemetery and achievements include:

The latest good news is that the Friends, in conjunction with Birmingham City Council, have been greatly involved in the refurbishment of the Superintendent’s Lodge following water damage. More people are needed to help with the preservation of this valued part of our local heritage and to support our Heritage Lottery Fund bid. Anyone interested in becoming a member, can find more details on our website (www.fbec.org.uk), by e-mailing friendsofbec@gmail.com, or writing to FBEC, c/o The Lakeside Centre, 180 Lifford Lane, Kings Norton, Birmingham, B30 3NU.

The market, which is on 1 December in the village square, will be bedecked with tinsel and good cheer and is the perfect way to get into the spirit of Christmas. Gorgeous hampers will be available from Cuffufle Preserves and you can fill yours with presents for family and friends that you know they will like. You can shop around the market for cosmetics from the soap man, honey from Frank at Beez Neez, Chocolate from Kneals and Trishul.
