Wanted - URGENTLY!!! Cub Scout Leader / Assistant Beaver Scout Leaders (2) th
We are 220 Birmingham Scout Group and are looking for three interested and committed people to join our team of volunteer leaders. Based in th Moseley, 220 Birmingham has been encouraging, challenging, nurturing and supporting young people aged between 6 & 14 for many years. Through scouting, we provide a diverse range of activities which develop life skills within our members. The Cub Pack is for young people aged between 8 and 10 ½ years old and meets on Monday evenings for 1 ¼ hours. The Cub Scout Leader is required to work with the assistant leaders to deliver a programme of activities based on scouting challenges and badge requirements. Alongside traditional scouting skills are badges covering aspects of physical development, creativity, faith, science and general interest work some of which may have a community or global focus. The Beaver Colony is for young people aged between 6 and 8 years old and meets on Friday evening for 1 ¼ hours. The Assistant Leaders work with the Beaver Scout Leader to ensure Beavers get a great introduction to scouting doing many of the activities and capturing the enthusiasm that the older groups enjoy. Energy and a commitment to developing young people are key components of this role and would suit anyone aged 18 or over. Volunteering with scouts is not just about the outdoors, but it is about adventure, fun and giving something back to the community. Full support for all of these roles will be provided by the Group Scout Leader, Executive Committee and wider leadership team. If you are interested in making a difference in the life of the group and the lives of local young people, or if you know someone who would be interested in joining us, please contact the chair of the executive committee on 07813 700923. Search for a Star Local actress Kathryn Rooney is supporting The Theatre Workshop in its Birmingham launch promotion to Search for a Star. This is your child’s chance to win one of two free scholarship places at this prestigious stage school. The Theatre Workshop is now inviting the best of local talent between ages 6-18yrs to audition for a special ‘Kathryn Rooney’ scholarship to train at The Theatre Workshop till Easter 2014. Drama training is a proven way of helping young children improve their confidence and ability to speak in front of an audience. A skill that is empowering whatever path their adult lives take. The Theatre Workshop offers development of these basic life-skills at the same time as offering children a real chance to make it in the industry. The Theatre Workshop is aligned to an agency that has taken many of their children out of the classroom, onto the stage and in front of TV cameras. They also conduct Lamda drama assessments as part of the course. The Theatre Workshop, established in Sussex for ten years has already launched the careers of notable young 10
performers including Oscar Lloyd, star of Emmerdale and the 4’O’Clock Club, Hetti Bywater who is currently playing Lucy Beale in Eastenders and Brennock O’Conner and Sam Hickman who are both currently doing a UK Tour of Oliver playing the role of Dodger. Now The Theatre Workshop is coming to Birmingham, launching in April with a Saturday Morning class from 10am – 1pm at The Priory School, Edgbaston. If your child would like to get involved without going through the audition process then they can simply go along to the first session in May completely free of charge to see what it’s like. Places are limited so do make sure you get your name on the list. For contact details see below.
Kathryn is offering two talented local youngsters the chance of a lifetime to train at the top stage school and be taught by West End Stars of Hairspray and Legally Blonde. Not only are two scholarships on offer, the lucky students will also gain professional representation from The Theatre Workshop’s agency. Kathryn Rooney, a local girl originally from Solihull, who has just finished in the Birmingham Pantomime of Robinson Crusoe, took a break from her busy schedule to say “This is a great chance for up and coming talent to secure the best training on offer for free! I look forward to meeting the winners in the near future”.
Theatre Workshop Director Lora Munro also from Birmingham said: “We want to find the stars of tomorrow and give two young people the chance to fulfil their dreams and receive the best training on offer in the area”. Auditions will be held in late April 2013. Places to audition will be limited so please contact The Theatre Workshop as soon as possible. 0121 474 3182 suzy@thetheatreworkshop.com www.thetheatreworkshop.com

It's not what you know, it's who you know There is no stronger form of advertising than word of mouth and that is the secret to the incredible success of local business and professional networking group Moseley BNI. In a year the group passes more than a million pounds worth of business between its 20 members, and is now looking for more members to boost this success even further. All that is required is a little time commitment and the rewards are there to be reaped. The group meets for a weekly breakfast meeting at Moseley Golf Club, where you can expect a delicious cooked breakfast, a jovial atmosphere, and an average of £19,000 worth of business being passed around each week. After breakfast, the meetings follow a simple formula: 1. Each member makes their ’60 second pitch’ to say who they are and the kind of referrals they are looking for. 2. A contribution round sees the passing over of completed referral slips, with details of hot leads to be followed up.
3. The ‘Thank you for the business’ box goes round for people to pop their cards in with details of business done. A key philosophy of the group is ‘givers gain’ meaning, the more you give the more you get back. If you would like to go along as a visitor you can see what its like and meet a group of like-minded businessmen and women who are geared up to generate business for you and act as your own personal ‘sales force’. There is no obligation to join but you will find it hard not to. Just call Jeff on 07973 562583 or email breakfast@moseleybni.co.uk for more information. www.moseleybni.co.uk 15
Friendship, fresh air and exercise golf has it all Find out for yourself at Midlands Golf Week, a festival of free and lowcost Get into golf events for all. It will run across eight counties from 1221 April and there’s a full schedule of events including free Get into golf lessons, taster events, family fun days, coffee mornings and sample golf evenings. The week is endorsed by Steve Backley, who won javelin medals at three consecutive Olympics and was world number one. Backley, a keen golfer, said of the sport: “I have found it to be the perfect postathletics career activity to keep me sane.” The Midlands Golf Week is now in its third year and has proved to be a great success with new golfers and returners to the game. Last year over 3500 people sampled the sport during the event and this year the organisers expect even more interest. Golf ’s winning combination of exercise, sporting skill and social interaction make it the perfect tonic for good health and happiness. 16
There’s no better sport for bringing people together – whatever their age, gender, background or ability. With plenty of time for conversation and fun, golf is the perfect way to make new friends or grow closer bonds with people you already know. Nicky Greenacre can vouch for that. When her husband began to play golf seriously she decided to take up the game and started at women-only coaching sessions. “The course was just brilliant,” said the 48-year-old. “We were nine women, all different ages and we all got on and had such a laugh. We just had the best time.” So don’t delay! If you enjoy fresh air and friendship then Get into golf at the Midlands Golf Week. All you have to do is visit getintogolf.org, book your session and turn up on the day in comfortable clothing. Equipment is provided.

Sold subject to contract Moving house is often one of the most exciting times in our life – and at the same time it is right up there as one of the most stressful too. In the second of our ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ series we meet Chris Beddow, Solicitor, who specialises in conveyancing and helps people complete their sale and purchase as smoothly as possible. Tyndallwoods Most people do not move house very often, so when they do the process is usually new to them or at most a distant memory. Also there are elements which are slightly out of their control, with maybe four, five or six people in the chain all with different agendas. Some people want to move quickly, others want to take their time, and some people have children moving schools so want to tie in with school holidays. And this is where it really makes a difference having a conscientious, understanding solicitor on your side. Chris at Tyndallwoods takes the time to get to know his clients, understand what they expect, help them understand the procedure and what they need to do. When people go to see Chris they generally have found a house and agreed a sale. And he guides them through the process which usually takes from six to 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site

Not every sale or purchase is without its pitfalls though and Chris is on hand to help guide people through any issue which may arise, be it right of way, apartment management, or environmental. You want someone on your side who you can trust and rely on when undertaking something as big as the sale and purchase of your home, someone local with a good reputation. Car Culture hits the High street Kings Heath High street is one of the busiest streets in Birmingham and sees thousands cars, trucks, bikes and people on the roads every day. On the 30th March 2013 from 10:00 to 3:00 children from Kings Heath Primary School invite you to think about road use in Kings Heath. You can visit their exhibition and stall at Kings Heath Village Square and visit participating shops and venues displaying information and asking you to contribute to discussion about road use in Kings Heath on the day. ‘Car Culture’ is a project responding to concerns following the death of Hope Fennel, from the Highbury Youth Parliament, from local residents and councillors. Kings Heath Residents Forum working with Hall Green Arts Forum and Sustrans are working with Community First funding to run a pilot scheme at Kings Heath Primary school, running workshops to gauge what children think and engage parents and local residents in discussions around road use and safety.
Children have used rice to visualise statistics and develop presentations, reviewing their journey to school, interviewing each other and parents and creating short re-enactments to help discussion. They have been researching road safety and polling parents and children at school. The 30th March is an opportunity to raise awareness and discussion across Kings Heath Marcus Belben Project coordinator said, ‘There are concerns locally about the High Street, and around all our local schools at certain times, and working with children their parents and local residents documenting their concerns will promote dialogue, change attitudes and influence road safety measures to make our roads safer.’

He's behind you! If you fancy a bit of amateur dramatics in your life – from set and costume design to serious acting then now’s your chance. Drama 13, a well established Moseley and Kings Heath based amateur dramatics group is looking for new members. Drama 13 started in the early 1970s when the original Moseley CofE School building became the St Mary’s Youth and Community Centre, later named Centre 13. The vicar of St Mary’s Church asked members of the existing St Mary’s Amateur Dramatic Society and others to form a new Drama Group. A ‘mini-theatre’ was created and the group was renamed Drama 13. After Centre 13 closed in 2003, Drama 13 found a new home at the New Life Baptist Church in Kings Heath, which has a large hall with a stage. The group has since provided stage curtains and lighting, as well as window blinds to allow daylight performances. Drama 13 entertains the public with typically a play and a pantomime each 24
year together with fun fund-raising social activities. The group writes and produces Murder Mystery Evenings, with three planned in 2013. Drama 13 has also entered the annual Birmingham Drama Festival FAME with good results. This year’s pantomime will be ‘Cinderella’, following last year’s highly successful ‘Dennis and the Donkey’. There are opportunities from set design and construction to serious acting, and people have ‘learnt their trade’ in this friendly group. New members of any age are always welcome. If interested, you can phone the secretary Pat Franchi on 0121 244 2709, or simply go along to the Church Hall (opposite Asda Supermarket) where they meet on Tuesday evenings at 7.45pm. Don’t miss the chance to get involved before they start recruiting for the December Pantomime!

Charity on the Buses In July 2013, it is 100 years since the first motor buses were run by Birmingham City Council. To mark this anniversary retired Solihull businessman David Humphries & wife Pam are running a number of Historic Bus Tours in the city. One of these is following the old number 1A route from Acocks Green through Moseley and Edgbaston calling in at Winterbourne House & Garden and taking a detour to visit the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter. Four more tours are taking place on the famous Outer Circle bus route (the number 11), which will spend a couple of hours circumnavigating the suburbs of the Second City. All the tours include an audio commentary and the opportunity to 28
stop off for a bite to eat or a cuppa. David says that “As well as giving our passengers a great day out on a historic bus from the Wythall Transport Museum, we will raise money for a number of charities and we hope to donate over a thousand pounds this year. In addition to the Birmingham tours, there are two more on old Midland Red buses visiting the Cotswolds and the Black Country Living Museum. To find out more visit www.outercirclebus.com or give Pam & David a call on 07405 849192.
