Yum Yum in Brum When Brum Yum Yum launched KingshEATh Streetfood Market back in April last year, everybody involved was taken by surprise. With ten vendors and enough freshly cooked food for 1,000 portions, founder Duncan Stanley thought he had everything covered. But when 3,000 hungry diners descended on Kings Heath Village Square on a rainy day in April, he realised he’d underestimated his audience. “It was amazing,” says Duncan, “the Village Square was overflowing with people, queues were forty deep and nearly all the food was gone within two hours. People travelled from all over the Midlands for our launch event and we knew we had to raise our game in time for the following month. We vowed to double the size of the show and that’s what we did.” Since then, on the second Saturday of every month ‘KingshEATh’ plays host to up to twenty streetfood crews and local food producers, serving up dishes from all over the world, freshly cooked on the spot from top quality, locally sourced ingredients. With live music and ‘The Hare on the Square;’ The Hare and Hounds’ popup pub, the events
have a ‘mini-festival’ family atmosphere and as dishes are in the £3-6 range, street food is great value for money too. As the new kid on Birmingham’s blossoming dining scene, streetfood has brought the media spotlight to Kings Heath. Last year Visit Britain named Brum Yum Yum as one of the city’s Top 5 food destinations and articles have featured in titles like Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan.com. Having recently launched a weekly ‘Lunchmarket’ in the city centre and a popup craft beer bar called ‘Beermarket,’ Duncan insists he has no plans to leave Kings Heath. “The Village Square is Brum Yum Yum’s home and we’re so grateful for all the local support we get. That’s what makes KingshEATh so special.”

BACK TO SCHOOL FEATURE
Back to school In our special feature on ‘back to school’ we look at the various options for children making the jump from primary to secondary school. Most parents of school children will be thinking about uniform, shoes, PE kit and generally getting back into the routine of school in September. But for a few there are more pressing issues to consider. Like what secondary school to choose and whether to go comprehensive, grammar or for those who can afford it, independent. Each of these choices are right for different types of children. The key is working out what is right for your child. The move to secondary school is major and you want to get it right for your children first time. If you are facing this decision at the moment then hopefully this will help you. Comprehensive All of the comprehensive schools in the area run several open days during September and October, so that you can make sure you get to see all those relevant to you. Some are listed on page 26 but if the one you have in mind is not there you can find them all listed online at www.birmingham.gov.uk/secondaryschool where there is also lots more helpful information.
Grammar The grammar schools prove to be a highly attractive option for many. Children take the grammar test early in September and the closing date for registration is in July. So for children going into year 5 in September these are some useful dates. For those going into year 6, good luck! For more information about grammar schools go to www.birminghamgrammarschools.org and to see the open days go to page 26. Independent And finally, we are fortunate to have an excellent choice of independent schools locally with outstanding results and reputation. If this is the route you are planning to take you may already have decided upon a school, but if in doubt the open days are a great way to see these schools at their best. For dates see page 26.

Two halves make more than one whole Outside London, Birmingham is believed to have the most demanding and selective 11+ system in the country. For many parents over the years, entry to selective grammar schools has become a central obsession: 10,000 children are prepared and tutored every year for a meagre 1,500 places; a figure which is soon to increase. However, despite the increase in places available, the raw statistics do not make for happy reading – 5 in 6 children will fail the 11+ examination! However, there is more to education than passing examinations. It is essential to educate the ‘whole child,’ the mind and body, through a creative, artistic and physical education within an enriched curriculum. This allows children to be challenged and to flourish, to develop the confidence to achieve - and to learn how to fail. Yvette Baker, Old Hallfieldian (1998 – 2003) London 2012 Olympian (synchronised swimming) and guest of honour at our annual Speech Day and Prize Giving, informed the guests of how her earlier failures spurred her on to achieve her greatest success. At Hallfield, we have achieved the highest academic standards in the West Midlands:-
• 91% pass rate to selective grammar schools in 2014
• 62 scholarships to independent schools in 2 years
• 6 children achieving gold medals at the National UK Maths Challenge Finals
…but, we did not achieve all of this by teaching just maths, english and study skills in preparation for the 11+ examinations. To the contrary, in addition to the usual timetable, Year 5 went on a residential trip to Cranedale, our U11 Chess Team became National IAPS Champions, the U11 Soccer Team reached the last 16 of the ISA National Finals and Year 6 performed Macbeth – all 52 of them and to the highest acclaim – with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Children leave our school, happy, well rounded and prepared for the secondary school experience, with the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed. Roger Outwin-Flinders Headmaster, Hallfield School, Edgbaston.

All Round Education All-round education and the development of the whole child are the subject of debate, and parents and school leavers alike are waking up to the fact that good grades alone are not enough if you want to stand out and compete in the professional world. Indeed, increasing numbers of parents are placing emphasis on investigating opportunities for what is commonly termed ‘personal development’ alongside more traditional indicators of academic excellence such as a school’s league table position and leavers’ university destinations. Development of character in young people is not at the cost of academic performance: instead, evidence shows it boosts exam results. The best schools embrace characterbuilding and an all-round education not as an alternative to academic attainment but as an essential adjunct of it. Dr Weeks, Headmistress at Edgbaston High School for Girls, says: “At EHS we focus on enriching the overall educational experience: not only do pupils make excellent academic progress and achieve high standards in their work, but they also benefit from a full range of stimulating physical, artistic, cultural and recreational activities.
“Much emphasis is placed on the value of participation and a strong sense of social and moral responsibility. Pupils are encouraged to work as part of a team, face new challenges and acquire new skills and this can provide characterbuilding opportunities for all which instils confidence and a sense of achievement in pupils. ”This approach, combined with excellent teaching, means that we are able to offer our pupils a truly well-rounded education.” Parents are invited to visit Edgbaston High School with their daughters at one of their forthcoming open days: Senior School Open Day Thursday 25 September 2014, 4.30 - 7.00pm Preparatory School Open Day Saturday 27 September 2014 , 9.30am - 12.00 noon

International Baccalaureate a great start in life The International Baccalaureate is an all round preparation for life and statistically IB students drop out of university in fewer numbers than A level students. They also get a higher percentage of first class degrees and start on higher salaries. Impressive results this year secure Bromsgrove School’s position as one of the UK’s top IB schools. The average IB student at Bromsgrove gained 560 UCAS points, which is comparable to four A* at A Level. The School’s Director of IB, Doctor Michael Thompson, said: “We are delighted with these results which reflect superbly well, not just on the students themselves, but also on all those involved in delivering IB courses, monitoring and supporting pupil progress. “Keeping up maths and languages is a sine qua non for many ambitious pupils and parents who want to be able to operate in the global market.” In 2014, local Bromsgrove student Jagraj Bhandal was one of those who scored 44 out of a possible 45, having previously also achieved A* in both maths and further maths A Levels and an A in AS physics. But Bromsgrove is much more than a place to get good grades, it prides itself on being a happy school where children of all ages can thrive both academically and outside of the classroom.
A recent parental survey supported this with over 97% saying their child was happy or very happy at school. The opportunity to develop and excel in non academic areas is of huge importance and a wide range of sports and activities are on offer every day and at the weekend. Catering for 1600 pupils aged 3 -18 on three sites (although the prep and senior schools are adjacent to each other) gives the school a unique position within the town of Bromsgrove. With over 400 boarders, including international pupils coming from 40 different countries, together with a strong contingent of British boarders, the school is a small global community – a place to live, work and make friends for life. Open day at St Dunstan's School If you are facing the decision of which primary school is right for your child then you are invited to visit St Dunstan’s Catholic Primary School for one of their open days. See details opposite. St Dunstan’s Catholic Primary School and Nursery is a wonderful place for children to learn. It is one of four Catholic schools within the parish which include St Dunstan’s, St Alban’s, St Jude’s and Bishop Challoner Catholic College. St Dunstan’s Catholic School is a primary feeder school to Bishop Challoner Catholic College. Due to the shared campus, children at St Dunstan’s are able to visit Bishop Challoner frequently to use their sports hall and to take part in shared learning activities. There are a wide variety of extra-curricular activities; multi skills, football, netball, cheerleading, art and percussion are some of the clubs which take place regularly. Children are actively encouraged and taught about healthy lifestyles in school.

All classes have a planting area within the school where they grow fruit and vegetables, which they then use to cook with. In June the school held a ‘Local Clubs Week’ inviting local clubs within the community to come into school and introduce the children to activities available to them outside school, which they may be interested in joining.
These included a Claire’s Dance Club, Scanlon’s School of Irish Dancing, Brownies, Bishop Challoner Judo Club, Sean McDermotts Gaelic Football Club and Moseley Rugby Club. The Friends of St Dunstan’s arrange various activities during the school year for all the family which are always extremely popular; these include St Dunstan’s Got Talent, Family Discos and the Summer Fun Fair.

Carry on learning Three inexpensive ways to get your child to enjoy learning during the holidays. To improve English skills take them to the local library once a week. Making a trip to the new Birmingham Central Library will make your day out special and costs next to nothing. To help them keep fit and active take them swimming. Swimming is a life skill and, because of budget cuts and other factors, we cannot afford to leave our children’s acquisition of this essential skill to the school curriculum alone. To improve mental maths and analytical skills spend time playing board games like Snakes and Ladders, Scrabble, Monopoly, and Chess. Mary Sule, private tutor T: 0784 6618 694 E: mary.maths@yahoo.com

Fletchers Bar and Eatery Fletchers is the latest vibrant and welcome addition to the burgeoning bar and eats trade on the tremendously trendy York Road, which has become a corridor of coolness in King’s Heath. It is the perfect place for a drink - or several - and the food’s fantastic too. The tempting ‘tapas’ style menu (with some hearty additions like beautifully cooked sirloin and Estofado) is available every night of the week. But you’d expect nothing less from our premier local hospitality couple – the very talented Brett and Tracey – who have established Fletcher’s sister venue – The Kitchen Garden café - as a quintessentially King’s Heath location, which everybody knows as a quirky and beloved landmark. As the ‘stay-out late’ sister of the Kitchen Garden Cafe, Fletchers benefits from late licences of 1am, all the more time to enjoy a leisurely quaff of the many fine wines personally selected by Karen, the extremely knowledgeable and thoughtful sommelier. One of her favourites is the deeper and fruitier Argentinian Malbec wine, Callia. It works especially well as an accompaniment to the brilliant and filling ‘Estofado,’ chick pea, chorizo and chicken main course, which is the
personal favourite of Greg, the assured assistant manager, who also does a fantastic line in ‘boutique beers,’ including the irresistible Curious range, which is finished with Champagne yeast. And it’s the Mediterranean accent – in the food and wine as well as the light and spacious interior, cleverly and sympathetically converted from an old shop – that really sets Fletchers apart. The secret of its success is that the talented people behind Fletchers totally ‘get’ that southern European vibe of informal fine dining and wining being one of the sweetest pleasures of the good life or ‘La Dolce Vita.’ Max Carlish Fletchers Bar & Eatery 7 York Road B14 7SA Tel: 0121 443 4725 www.fletchersbarandeatery.co.uk

Stage2 Youth Theatre Company Founded in the late eighties by local resident Liz Light, the historic and innovative Stage2 youth theatre company has played a positive part in literally thousands of young peoples’ lives throughout the Midlands for nearly three decades. With a hatful of awards, including ‘Best Cultural Thing in the City’ as well as best production of 2013 with The Tempest, Stage2 is one of the region’s biggest and busiest youth theatre companies. Its open audition policy, which means that anyone between the ages of 7 and 21 can join – regardless of confidence, experience or even ability – ensures that everyone who wants to is guaranteed a part in a production. Stage2 is also the only local youth theatre company to operate a subsidy policy and to have a scheme accredited by the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation. A recent production by the company – ‘Why is John Lennon Wearing A Skirt ?’ adapted from longtime Stage2 collaborator Clare Dowie’s poignant and funny coming of age tale, was a hilarious and colourful tour de force, set against the backdrop and music of the classic soul and early Beatles era. It was fantastic to see a stage full of over 100 young people, dressed in period costume, perform with wit, vitality and a clear gift for comedy.
But Stage2 offers much more than the chance to take part in one of their consistently excellent productions. As Liz says “Everyone is treated as an individual and supported to reach their full potential. The focus is on training for the future – personal development, further education and careers - we do Technical Theatre, Marketing, Fundraising, Arts Administration, leadership and qualifications. With such a wide range of opportunities, there’s something for everyone.” Now based at Millennium Point, with performances each term at The Crescent Theatre, Stage2 is running excellent value Summer Schools in August and will resume its regular programme in the Autumn term. Max Carlish If anyone would like to join Stage2 (no audition necessary) just visit the website www.stage2.org for full details.

Get ready for some folk music The Moseley Folk Festival will be returning to the beautiful setting of Moseley Park, on 29 – 31 August 2014 with its biggest line up to date. Following another sell out year in 2013, which was headlined by Ocean Colour Scene, Edwyn Collins and The Dublin Legends (Formerly The Dubliners), Moseley Folk continues to grow from strength to strength as it steams into its ninth year. The opening night will be headlined by ex-The Smiths guitarist and chief songwriter; Johnny Marr. Regularly cited as one of the most influential guitarists by the likes of Rolling Stone, Johnny Marr has become synonymous with some of the most classic guitar riffs of all time including “This Charming Man,” “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out,” and ‘How Soon Is Now?” Friday night’s stellar line up is completed with the addition of Sonic Youth’s very own Thurston Moore, Ex-Doves front man Jimi Goodwin, Martha Tilston & The Scientists, Samantha Crain, Lisa O’Neill, Count Drachma, The Gren Bartley Band, Julie Byrne & Birmingham’s own Midnight Bonfires who will headline the second stage. Saturday Night, will be headlined by a true legend of the folk world; Richard Thompson. Richard was a founding member of seminal UK folk
band Fairport Convention but it was in his solo work where he secured his folk legend status. He will be joined by New York Root Revivalists, The Felice Brothers as well as Woods, Stealing Sheep with Brass Band, Boat To Row, Arc Iris, The Rails, Dan Whitehouse, Olof Arnalds, Lords of Thyme, Boo Hewerdine, Grey Wolf and Chicken Bone John. The final night will come to a raucous climax as with a career spanning set from The Waterboys. The Sunday line up is completed by the winners of the ‘Best Group’ at last years BBC Folk Awards Lau plus Marissa Nadler, The Old Dance School, Lisa Knapp, Miles Hunt & Erica Nockalls (of The Wonderstuff), Tom Hickox, Zervas and Pepper, Deborah Rose, Georgia Ruth, Olion Byw & Alice Boman.

Have you written your will yet? In our latest ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ series we say hello to Judy Dyke Private Client Solicitor and Director leading the Tyndallwoods footer for use Private Client Team who sheds a little light on will writing. It is something that many of us know we need to do but it is so easy to put off - until it is too late in many cases. According to statistics, seven out of ten adults have not made a will. Judy, who has been with Tyndallwoods since she joined her father there in 1974, is seeing more and more wills being contested. She said: “Frequently used grounds for attack are that undue influence was applied to the testator in relation to the gifts in the will or that the testator lacked testamentary capacity at the time of making the will. “If you are going to the trouble of making a will you want to be sure that it will make life easier for your loved ones after your death. This means that it is important to have a good will drafted by a solicitor who is regulated, qualified and insured. We will also witness your signature of the document.

Judy Dyke, Director
“Our file papers and attendance notes then help to make the will robust against challenge. “Your will should be reviewed every three years because different styles of will are right for people at different stages in their lives. And supporting letters of wishes are also incredibly important.’’ Judy’s final piece of advice is to have your original will held at your solicitor’s office so that it can easily be located when it is needed.

Have you secured your pupilage? In the first of our ‘meet the team at Bloomer Heaven’ series we say hello to Chris Barlow, Managing Director who heads up the barrister team within the firm. If you are an aspiring barrister, securing your pupilage must seem like the end of a challenging journey. But it is also the beginning of an even bigger one, your career. Chris said: “Many graduates are embarking on their chosen career at this time of year, but the main difference with a barrister is that they are self-employed from the word go, which can be daunting for some. “One of the first things that people setting up in business do is to appoint an accountant, and that is even more important for a barrister because there are a number of different rules that apply to this profession and we can advise you on these. “At Bloomer Heaven we have a specialist barrister team and currently act for many barristers in the area. Our advice to those starting out in a newly secured pupilage, or, indeed any self-employment, is to start as you mean to go on. You are likely to become very busy very quickly, and so it can be challenging, but if you get into a discipline early on to keep things in good order, this will make life much easier for you.”
Discounted rates for barristers during their pupilage Bloomer Heaven has built a strong reputation working in this area and provides services for barristers throughout their career life cycle right through to planning for retirement and inheritance tax. Barrister clients have a fixed fee basis at Bloomer Heaven and are able to benefit from discounted rates during their pupilage. Barristers’ Networking Event Bloomer Heaven is holding a barristers’ evening networking event on 10 October at Utopia, in Church St, Birmingham. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet others at all levels within the profession. Please contact Bloomer Heaven if you would like to be put on the guest list. Organisers are planning a bumper market with up to 40 stalls, live music, activities for the little ones and a general air of celebration and jubilation. The first market day on 6 May 2006 was on the disabled car park next to All Saints Church, a perfect spot on the corner of the High Street and Vicarage Road. The market is now one of the best in the region according to its stallholders. While the Village Square was being built the market was moved to temporary accommodation on the piece of waste ground behind the All Saints Centre as it stands today. A few loyal stallholders and the determination of the organisers kept it going for seven market days during 2011. Then the joyful day dawned on 5 November 2011, with the first market day on the stunning new village square and they have not looked back since. Joint Organiser Steve Bairstow said: “This is a fantastic milestone for us and we are proud of what we have achieved. The idea of a Kings Heath Farmers’ Market was first mentioned in a meeting of Kings Heath Business Association in January 2006, and we held our first market just four months later on 6 May 2006.

“In the run up to our launch we were very grateful for the help of Birmingham City Council and David Isgrove, the force behind the hugely successful Moseley Farmers’ Market. We would also like to thank our stallholders for making the market what it is today with such a wonderful variety of farm produce and street food. “And finally we would like to say a huge thank you to the local people who visit the market. We see that people love coming because it strengthens their connection with the local community. Also people increasingly want to know where their food is coming from and at the market they can talk to the stallholders who are often the very farmers who grow, prepare and cook the fabulous produce on the stalls.” Next market days for your diary (just remember ‘first Saturday of the month’): 2 August | 6 September 4 October | 1 November

Chef Richard Turner at his Harborne Michelin Star restaurant, Turners
Summer Mackerel Summer is here at last and it was my intention to write about English soft fruit but after much tasting we are thinking that our berries need some more sun and are not quite as they should be just yet. But as the saying goes there are plenty more fish in the sea, so we turn our attention to English mackerel. This wonderful fish has seen a Renaissance over the last few years and is a staple on most restaurant menus at the moment. Please buy English line-caught fish if possible. As well as the fishing ethics they tend to be a better quality of fish if just a little more expensive. I think one fear that people have with this type of fish is the bones, but if you ask your fishmonger to v pin them then this removes these worries. There are numerous ways of cooking this wonderful fish, pan frying, grilling or even on the BBQ. How about trying a chefy tip that will amaze all of your friends and that’s blow torching them. Sounds a little strange but at the moment this is definitely the new thing and gives a very good result as you have more control and this is the key to cooking fish well.
room temperature. Then when ready to go brush them with oil, season and evenly blow torch them on both sides. Leave them to rest for a couple of minutes and let the residual heat finish the cooking process. Try serving them with a soy glaze and an oriental salad with toasted peanuts or maybe some pickled beetroots and freshly grated horseradish. Let your imagination run wild and enjoy this great British fish. Another reason to be proud of Kings Heath Kings Heath Business Association (KHBA) has become a major force for change and accomplished many achievements that contribute to the vibrant community that is the Kings Heath of today. Its most spectacular and public achievement to date was, from day one, supporting the £6 million transformation of All Saints Church grounds into a spectacular Village Square. This created a centre for community activities including the farmers market, arts market, crafts market, antiques fair, street food market, and so many other regular and one-off events. KHBA was instrumental in securing the Business Improvement District (BID) in 2009 and forming the separate town centre partnership which has an ongoing commitment to improving Kings Heath. Founded in 2000 with just five members KHBA has grown to approximately 250 members. Its members range from large multi-national companies to small one person enterprises. It has many ongoing objectives, but its primary aim is to represent the current concerns of local businesses, their customers and clients and also to help promote good relationships between its members and the local community. New indoor market planned for Kings Heath A KHBA member is currently planning to

open an indoor market in Kings Heath which will provide space for over 100 small stalls at a low rent to support micro businesses looking for a permanent premises and a presence close to Kings Heath High Street. Chairman Stan Hems said: “The indoor market will be a breath of fresh air for the high street and provide much needed space for very small businesses that need to have low overheads but require well-located premises to showcase their products. “I could name 20 to 30 businesses on the high street who started out in just this way and have now moved on and grown their business. We need to enable newcomers the same chance to get started as well as provide shoppers with good choice and variety in the town centre.” Interested? Anyone interested in finding out more about the planned indoor market should contact Stan Hems on 0121 444 4344 or 0121 705 2925.

Hiya Kids Well the sun’s been out, hurrah! I am always amazed by how quickly some women tan. A bit of sun and they’ve got legs the colour of Doritos. Though I do agree that fake tanning is the way - I’ve got my own mixture, which is a mix between Johnson’s Holiday Skin and Cillit Bang. For those going away over August I hope you don’t pay too much heed to trip advisor. I met a woman on the 50 bus and she said the hotel she went to last year had got 4 stars, but then when they arrived there was a hen in the toilet! I will be at the Edinburgh festival at the Assembly Rooms in August - it’s very posh. All painted in them grey colours that are all the rage now. The kind of shades you pay a lot of money for - I think they’re from the Canon and Ball range. The Assembly Rooms has got the biggest ladies toilet I’ve ever seen - I found one woman in there last time I did the festival who had been trying to find the way out since 2006.
They’ve got those hot air hand driers. The ones that sound like a helicopter going off and traumatise kids. They are also no good if you’re getting on a bit and your skins a bit loose. The force of them can mean that old ladies chins end up on their foreheads. Enjoy your summer break with your friends and families - keep laughing xxxxxx

Mad Jocks and Englishmen 40 years on No one could have imagined in the early seventies, when four mates got together to play folk songs, that they would still be hard at it, and still in demand, forty years later. But that’s what has happened. Moseley based Mad Jocks and Englishmen are this year celebrating 40 years of music and larking about. What started as a few appearances at folk clubs became a career that has taken them to Europe, the Middle East, Hong Kong, and all over the UK, with radio, TV appearances and numerous albums along the way.
A concert to celebrate the Anniversary is being held on Saturday, 11 October at Kings Heath Cricket Club, and tickets are already selling fast through the band’s website: www.madjocksandenglishmen.co.uk. They can be contacted by phone on 0121 449 7085.
Don't ignore bleeding gums Dr Parmar, a local family dentist, offers some friendly advice on keeping your teeth strong and healthy. There has been much noise recently surrounding gum disease, and yet how many of us really understand the causes, or more critically, what we can do about it? So often patients believe bleeding gums are normal (or mistakenly believe it’s their teeth bleeding), so they put up with inflamed and painful gums, when with a little specialist attention it can easily be prevented. The majority of tooth loss in the UK is through gum disease (gingivitis) rather than tooth decay
54
(caries). Caused by a sticky bacterial film that forms below the gum line, that when left undisturbed causes gums to become inflamed and bleed. Our natural instinct when we notice something bleeding is to avoid the area but where gum disease is concerned this is a disaster. Bleeding is a sign of disease, and brushing, flossing, and deep cleaning by a hygienist is the only way to prevent it. Headway House, supporting people with acquired brain injury
Supporting local charities My Moseley & Kings Heath magazine is committed to supporting the local community and local charities and has long been promoting their good causes through these pages. This issue marks the first dedicated sponsorship of a local charity. Every issue My Moseley & Kings Heath will donate 10% of the profits to a different local charity. This issue is dedicated to the support of Headway House at Moseley Hall Hospital. Acquired brain injury support Headway House provides a specialist service designed to give brain injured people the opportunity to re-learn lost skills as well as prevent any further deterioration or isolation. This can be done by learning coping strategies, modifying inappropriate behaviour, acquiring new skills and interests, meeting with other brain injured people, understanding their brain injury, improving selfconfidence and accessing community activities. These services are available to people with acquired brain injury who will have usually completed their formal medical/clinical rehabilitation and are seeking ways to re-integrate back into the community, but who may at this time still require a lot of support and assistance. All individuals are assessed and offered choices of activities best suited to their needs. Support within the Community User led groups are held in the community
where brain injured people are supported to come together to access activities and enjoy pursuits with peers such as cinema, swimming, bowling, gym and lunch clubs. Lifestyle Services Headway House provides a flexible service where each brain injured person is visited to assess their needs and a care plan is devised giving details of the type of support to be offered. Each client will be allocated a specially trained support worker to help them work on goals, and specific individual needs. To speak to someone for support, advice or information or to access one of the services mentioned above call 0121 457 7541. Headway House is always looking for volunteers for all services as well as donations to support the work they provide. To volunteer or make a donation call 0121 457 7541. Top class professional rugby - on your door step Support Moseley this season as they kick the league season off in September in pursuit of promotion from England’s 2nd tier to the top flight of English Rugby – The Aviva Premiership. The prize open to the 12 sides in The Greene King IPA Championship (GKIPA) is promotion to play the giants of Leicester Tigers, Saracens and Northampton Saints ….not to mention the glamour of European cup games in Toulouse, Paris or Dublin. The competition is tough and uncompromising in the GKIPA as Moseley face the likes of Bristol, Leeds and Worcester – all striving to return to the top table. Last season, Moseley’s 5th consecutive at this level, saw their best finish of 7th – just 3 places short of those play-off berths and the real prospect of elevation. Moseley’s Rugby Ground is just five minutes drive from Kings Heath & Moseley centres and has a free car park. It is on the bus route for the numbers 2, 11, and 76. The spectacular new £3.4 million stand which is currently being built is due to open in January and will offer top class facilities for corporate events, dinners and private functions.
