YogaBugs combines the art of story telling with yoga postures, breathing and relaxation, to create magical adventures in which every child is the leading star, the focus of that adventure. Often, the “I don’t want to do this” child can’t resist joining Nidhi on ‘the Magic Carpet’, ‘flying on the broomstick’ or ‘Swimming down the Nile’. Yoga helps children become more conscious of their bodies and their breathing and at the same time their flexibility, strength, posture and joint mobility all improve. The storytelling captures their imagination and is a real confidence booster. Most children can’t wait for the next class and want to do this every day. YogaBugs is now running classes in Moseley and Harborne for children aged 1 to 12. Call Nidhi on 0121 449 8858 or email Nidhi@yogabugs.com

Embracing Change Pop into ‘People’ on Poplar Road and you’ll find that it’s had a facelift. While the shop still has a distinctly vintage vibe, its new look is more clean and contemporary, with bright white walls, sparser displays and more open space. It also now includes a large craft-making table where owners Christian and Allison Sadler create many of the clothes, accessories and homeware on display. ‘We wanted to incorporate our workshop,’ says Christian, ‘so that people can see us making things when they come in.’ ‘And it’s not just for us.’ explains Allison, ‘We love that customers can have a cup of tea and do a bit of knitting while their friends are trying on clothes.’ The makeover is not the first change that Christian and Allison have faced in their twenty year partnership. They began by selling their handmade crafts on market stalls, but in 2000 they gave up the itinerant life for the stability of their Kings Heath shop. ‘We wanted to bring together what we were doing in the studio with the retail business,’ explains Allison, ‘and help support other local designers. It was the right time to do that.’

6

Fast forward ten years, and it was time to evolve again, this time by diversifying. Christian established his ‘Mr Christian’ bespoke dressmaking service while Allison started offering craft workshops. Both new ventures have been extremely successful. Allison believes that a willingness to embrace change is essential in business. ‘As creatives, we’re good at taking things apart and putting them back together in a different way. The last two years have been the most exciting we’ve ever had.’ But she still hopes the next big change won’t happen too soon. ‘We’ve worked morning, noon and night to get the shop looking how we want it to be. Now it’s time to relax. We just want to enjoy it for a little.’ www.thepeopleshop.co.uk Alexandra Taylor Freelance writer

Join the Band Are you fond of music and able to play a brass instrument? Then you might like to know that the City of Birmingham Brass Band (CBBB) is looking for talented new players to have fun and make music in the heart of the city. Based at Joseph Chamberlain Sixth-Form College (JCC) in Moseley, the CBBB has a long history of involvement with the local community. Band Chairman Elizabeth Monk said: “The band was originally set up for the workers at the Fisher & Ludlow factory during the Second World War.” “Since then, we’ve spread our wings and now include teachers, scientists, engineers, nurses and students; we’re a pretty diverse bunch!” Music and events are also very varied. “We aim to bring brass banding into the 21st century” Liz says. “We still play the odd traditional brass band march, but nowadays we feature many music genres including classical, jazz, rock &

10

roll, even pop. And we love to work with other artists and groups, so our concerts often include film, dance and song to help tell a story.” In 2011, the band ran their first Young Composers Competition to showcase some of the fantastic emerging talent in Birmingham. In February 2014, it is the turn of budding film makers. The band are staging a silent movie competition night, where the films will be set to music performed by the band. “We aim to do more than just a traditional brass band concert,” says Liz. Sound interesting? Want to know more? Contact Liz Monk on 07717 725 471 Alternatively, visit the band's website www. birminghambrass.co.uk or follow @birminghambrass on Twitter.

Hiya everybody and seasons greetings to one and all. As I write this it’s a lovely day, but I am sure it won’t be long before things change and Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the gritters coming out on Kings Heath high street what a troublesome family they are - the scourge of the neighbourhood! Facilities wise I am sorry to hear about the proposed closing of Kings Heath Post Office -everything is changing - Flo at the newsagent on the corner used to cash cheques for me - but she wont do it anymore. It’s a cash flo situation!

Try and send all the cards you write – there’s nothing more dispiriting than seeing yet another card to Tom and Beryl that you didn’t get around to posting once again sitting on the kitchen table

It’s that time of the year when having a good time and making sure every one you care about feels appreciated can all seem a bit too much.

Enjoy yourselves, look after each other and a Happy New Year xxxxxx

Here are my top tips for smiling through Christmas and New Year: Shop local - town can be too much and too impersonal. On your own high street you can bump into friends and neighbours and feel part of something. Don't spend too much - it really is the thought that counts - going into debt just aint worth it.

New Year New You Christmas is such a wonderful time of celebration, feasting, and often over indulgence. Which every year means that many of us start January with health related New Year’s resolutions. The top 10 new years resolutions last year* were: 1: Eat more healthily and exercise regularly 2: Drink less alcohol

So what’s it going to be for you in 2014? If you are like most of us and health and fitness is top of the list then hopefully our list of local gyms and fitness clubs will help. See page 20. Or you might have something more deep and personal that you want to tackle, in which case it could help to read the articles on pages 21 and 22 from a local therapist and life coach.

3: Learn something new 4: Quit smoking 5: Better work life balance

Whatever you decide to focus on in 2014, the whole team at My Moseley & Kings Heath wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The gift of peace of mind Christmas is a time of heightened stresses, which is absolutely normal. But if you feel stressed most of the time then it will be having a negative affect on you and those around you and Christmas can become a crisis point. Jan Tween, local therapist said: “If you are noticing that you don’t enjoy the things that used to give you pleasure this can be a sign of depression kicking in. “Or if you become aware that occasional extreme behaviour has become overwhelming, then you could be suffering from high levels of stress. “There are a number of ways that you can tackle these yourself. “You can learn relaxation techniques, mindfulness, and deep breathing techniques. And in the short term these can help, but what they are doing is smoothing over the cracks,” she said. To be free of stress or depression takes a little more work which is where someone like Jan comes in. Jan helps her clients to get to the nub of the issue that is underlying negative emotions and behaviours. She then helps them rebuild their lives from the very foundations.

On average people see Jan just three or four times and in many cases they walk away transformed. Jan offers a free half hour session for people to decide whether this is the right thing for them, and it is worth checking your private medical insurance to see if the cost can be covered. You can also ask to be referred by your GP. Employers can provide this within their employee benefits package which can result in a reduced level of stress-related absenteeism. If you are interested then get in touch with Jan: 0121 318 8134 jan@edgbastonhypnotherapy.com www.edgbastonhypnotherapy.com

Unlock the power of your own mind If you have become locked into repeated negative habits then there is a way out. And the answer is within your own head. People behave in a way that has been influenced by their experiences during childhood, according to Life Coach Dominic Borsberry. Dominic said: “If you are told you are stupid, bad, or wrong as a child then you believe it and continue to behave in that way. Which is why people rarely learn from their own mistakes, instead they make the same ones over and over again. “Through many years study and training I have developed a support system called positive change programming which I use to help people unlearn their negative and damaging subconscious behaviours. “Self talk is going on in everybody’s heads continually, but 80 per cent* of the time this is negative self talk. I help people change their internal dialogue so that instead of self doubt they feel self confidence. Most clients get immediate benefits because the programme is so powerful.”

Some of this must resonate with you if you have read this far, in which case Dominic has a particular message for you: “Of course, many of you know, as you read this now, that you sometimes feel anxious and fearful in your relationships, health and wealth. So if you would like to positively change those areas now, call me.” Dominic helps people achieve their life goals, improve their confidence, and helps them with relationship issues, weight loss, energy levels, stress and anxiety and presentation skills. Players treble their chances of a win with local charity lottery Just as Camelot doubles ticket prices to £2, TLC lottery has revealed that its players are 3.5 times more likely to win a weekly cash prize of £1000 than those paying the extra £1 on the National Lottery. For just £1 a week TLC players enjoy a 1 in 15, 000 chance of winning as opposed to Camelot’s 1 in 55,500, for the same prize and double the investment. Like the National Lottery, TLC players also raise vital funds for charity. As a local lottery TLC donates 55p from every pound to three local charities: Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s and Focus Birmingham. This figure is 175% higher than the legal minimum of 20p and way in excess of Camelot’s 28% charitable donation.

24

‘We work very hard to keep the ticket price to £1 and are delighted to know that our players have such a great chance of winning a nice prize fund. There has never been a better time to buy local” Says TLC Lottery Manager, Carl Bayliss who goes on to say “our prizes may not be lifechanging but, in raising over £400,000 last year, our players support is changing the lives of others.’ Players looking to treble their chances of a win and help raise vital funds for Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s and Focus Birmingham can do so in less than 5 minutes on the TLC website www.tlclottery.co.uk

Over 50 and need help with jobs around the house? Age UK Birmingham have launched a new “Handyfix” service for the over 50s that covers the whole city. With one phone call to 0121 437 0033 (extension 1003) people over 50 or their relatives, friends and carers can book a Handyperson to do those jobs around the house that need fixing. Age UK Birmingham staff will agree whether “Handyfix” can help, what needs doing, how long it’s likely to take and then book a day and time that best suits the customer. All the work will be carried out only by Age UK Birmingham Handyfix’s highly trained, reliable and trustworthy, in-house team of staff.

other odd jobs to complete in the hour. The work is tailored exactly to the customers needs. Cat Hayward, Chief Executive of Age UK Birmingham says, “This is for the jobs that to some may seem small but to others can make a huge difference to their daily lives. We also think this will be popular with the family, friends and carers of older people - and give them peace of mind that the work is done by someone trustworthy and friendly who will turn up when they’re supposed to and where the charge is clear before the work is started.”

For example:

• Most basic odd jobs around the house • Small repairs to: plastering, electrics, carpets, curtain rails, joinery and plumbing

• Safety – locks, doors, window locks, door chains, key safes

• Personal safety – grab rails etc • Disabled adaptations • Home from hospital improvements • Moving bulky items For just £40 customers will get an hour’s worth of work completed around the home. So if the first task is finished quickly then the friendly “Handyfix” staff will be happy to be given some

Keeping warm this winter It’s that time of year when we are all trying to keep our homes warm, but how much of that expensive heat goes straight out the window? Local family window company, Finesse Windows Ltd, is offering free thermal imaging checks so you can know once and for all how much of your hard earned money is disappearing into thin air. This thirty minute assessment consists of a visual check of your windows as well as a thermal image assessment for each window or door. You will get a summary report of the current state of your property and some recommendations for improvements. Managing Director Russell Bridge said: “Most people don’t realise that up to 35% of their home’s heat is lost through the windows and doors. And the quality of double glazing varies dramatically. “Factors to look out for include the quality of the glass itself, the material that the spacer bar between the panes of glass is made of, the gas which is sealed inside the glass, the detail within the frame and how effectively the window is sealed when it closes. “These, together with a precision fitting make all the difference between A

rated and lesser quality windows. “At Finesse we are positively nerdy about windows. To the extent that the outer pane of glass in our windows is made from sand with an ultra-low iron content – sand so rare that it is only found in two quarries in the UK. “This means it allows more heat energy from the sun to enter the house. And the invisible metallic coating on the interior pain prevents the heat from leaving the house. All in all, this means heat comes in but doesn’t go out.” If you would like to hear more about the passion that Finesse has for windows then call them on 0121 222 9546. Or to find out a bit more about them from their website go to www.finesse-windows.co.uk Factory Showroom: 39 Melchett Road Kings Norton Birmingham B30 3HP

Have a happy, crime free Christmas Our local bobbies Seasons Greetings from Sergeant Tom O’Keeffe and Sergeant Anna Wilson from Moseley and Kings Heath neighbourhood team. Whilst they hope you all enjoy the winter and Christmas holidays they would like to offer you their 12 Tips for Christmas that hopefully will help keep you safe and secure over this festive period.

Sergeant 2547 Tom O’Keeffe Moseley and Kings Heath neighbourhood team Moseley police station Woodbridge road Moseley Birmingham

12 tips for Christmas

• When you go Christmas shopping, don’t leave any valuables on display in your vehicle

• Don’t put your presents under the tree until the last possible moment

• Break down and wrap up or recycle

packaging from expensive Christmas items so potential burglars cannot see what new goods you have received

• Mark your postcode onto your new presents with a UV pen. Note down the serial number and register them at www.immobilise.com if they are ever stolen, you’re more likely to get them back

• Be aware when you’re out shopping of

your wallet or purse. Keep your bag by your side and watch out for pickpockets!

• Check all doors and windows are securely fastened and locked when you go out

• If you are out, close your curtains and use a timer device to switch lights on after dark

• Check on your elderly neighbours • Don’t drink and drive - if you’ve had too much to drink, ring for a taxi

• If you are going out for a Christmas party, remember to book a taxi in advance

• If you go away, ask a friend or relative

to take in your post, close your curtains at night and leave a light on a timer

• Don’t leave the car engine running while your vehicle is unattended

Bridging the Divide Tribal loyalties are strong in south Birmingham, and nowhere more so than Moseley and Kings Heath. But two local businesses have been daring enough to straddle both communities. Winspers Florists was first established in Moseley forty years ago. Owner Charmain Hannaby took it over in 2007, but the building developed structural problems that the landlord wasn’t prepared to fix. Forced to move to new premises, Charmain took the opportunity to look for somewhere bigger and ended up just a few hundred yards down the Alcester Road, opening on Kings Heath High Street in March 2013. She believes business has benefitted from the move. “We get more custom here.” she says. “It’s a bigger store, with more room to mingle. Ironically, I also discovered that most of our customers live in Kings Heath, but were travelling to Moseley to get their flowers. We’ve actually become even more local for them, so we haven’t really noticed a big difference in the people coming in.” Remi Faveau, co-owner of French patisserie Maison Mayci tells a different story. Travelling in the opposite direction, the business first

36

opened on Poplar Road in Kings Heath in 2005, then expanded onto Moseley High Street in 2010. Remi has noticed a distinct difference in clientele between the two neighbourhoods. “In Kings Heath we’re next to a school, people drop off their kids then come in for a coffee and a chat. We get more families and children. In Moseley we get more single people, and more older people. We also tend to be busier if it’s a nice day, but if the weather is bad then business can be slow. In Kings Heath it’s more even.” What are your experiences of shopping in Moseley and Kings Heath? Do you think there’s a difference in the people you see? Let us know what you think.

One to one learning in the Nursery

A Successful Start in Life at St George's Lower School St George’s School, Edgbaston, offers a complete education for boys and girls through to 18 years of age. This provides a strong, one school community where students feel settled and secure. In November 2012 St George’s opened a nursery at the school, providing care and education from four months of age. Emphasis is on each child developing as an individual. With extremely competitive fees and excellent facilities, the nursery is a thriving environment where children find learning exciting. Jenny Shaw, Head of the Lower School, takes a visionary approach to teaching and has introduced the idea of a holistic education. Students have smart targets set for numeracy, reading, writing and personal development. Classes rarely exceed 14 students and there is a teaching assistant in every class.

40

Formative assessment is ongoing. Every six weeks there is a summative assessment when new targets are set. The curriculum is varied and rich across the Lower School. “The Lower School offers wonderful opportunities for young minds to develop,” says Jenny Shaw. “Our children are very happy here and this shows in their successful achievements.” For more details please call: 0121 625 0398.

Planning for the inevitable In our latest ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ feature we meet Nicky Beggan, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives who specialises in probate cases. It is going to happen to us all one day, yet still we are reluctant to set down our wishes at to what will happen after we are gone.

Tyndallwoods footer for use

Nicky helps families complete the application for probate after they have lost a loved one. In many instances this can a stressful process when emotions are running high.

As well as putting the paperwork together, Nicky helps people to cope with the emotional side of things and engage with each other.

Nicky Beggan

Probate is a time when visiting a lawyer is essential, but Nicky has some words of advice to help this process run as smoothly as possible.

“Give brief funeral directions, particularly whether you wish to be buried or cremated.

Nicky said: “Probate work need not be complicated or time consuming. And it goes without saying that the simpler the process, the less it will cost and the more money that will remain within the estate.

“Be tidy with your paperwork and make sure that people know where to find your Will. Any small accounts with nominal amounts of money in should be closed down. If left these can cost more than the funds within them to close down after you have gone.”

“To make things as straightforward as possible for your loved ones there are three simple things you can do. “Make a Will including executors who can get along, stating who will be the guardians if there are children involved and giving details of your chosen beneficiaries. 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site

Lauren Lambert winner of Britain & Ireland Next Top Model 2013 on the catwalk at Style Birmingham Live

Kings Heath photographer takes the fashion world by storm You might think that it’s only top London photographers that get on in the world of fashion. But that is not so. Kings Heath resident Charles Davis of Professional Photography has seen his career span many types of photography and his latest breakthrough has been in the fashion industry. This year he was the official photographer for the Midlands Fashion Awards and Birmingham International Fashion Week. And he was one of the chosen few photographers at Style Birmingham Live which took place in September at Birmingham Town Hall. Charles’s fashion experience has also taken him to the heart of London Fashion Week, namely as is the official photographer for Manchester designer Sofia Dourvari, covering her designs at the Fashion’s Finest and Blogger’s Love events. And in December Charles is covering The Clothes Show Live. New Birmingham-based international women’s magazine Curvaceous Inc has now discovered Charles and made him their official cover story

photographer. Curvaceous Inc Editor Leanna Grant said: “We love to use Charlie because he just gets what we’re about and gets that shot for us.” As well as focusing on the fashion industry, Charles is also the talent behind many of the fantastic press photos in My Moseley & Kings Heath and My Harborne & Edgbaston, including the front cover of this issue. Amy Watson, editor said “Working with Charles over the last two years has been an absolute pleasure. He has helped us transform this little publication into a magazine that people enjoy reading and are happy to keep on the coffee table rather than tucking away with the telephone directories.” If you'd like to see more of Charles's photos go to www.professionalphotography.me.uk

The very first issue of Moseley Directory (held by Amy Maclean on the left) was in Februrary 2006 – fast forward to the latest issue of My Moseley and Kings Heath and My Harborne and Edgbaston held by Amy Watson and Kirsty de Vos on the right.

Our story from 2006 to now This year has seen more changes than ever to our handy little magazines. The first one was launched in 2006 as Moseley Directory by Moseley resident editor Amy Watson whilst on maternity leave as an alternative to returning to full time work in PR. It began as a simple mini directory promoting local businesses to local people with not much more than adverts within its pages. Since then as well as having another baby along the way, Amy launched My Kings Heath and Edgbaston Directory. The three magazines were merged/expanded recently to bring Harborne into the fold and increase the circulation from the initial 4,000 in 2006 to 20,000 today. Over the years the editor has put more and more pages of editorial in, with good local community stories and articles about local businesses. All these changes have hopefully led to a more pleasant reader experience. Many of our advertisers have been with us since the very beginning and have seen the magazines evolve over the years.

56

Amy is pleased that these magazines help local businesses promote themselves to the community, and that local people have come to rely on them as a useful resource for finding local businesses and services. She ran the magazines all by herself until earlier this year with the arrival of Amy Maclean and Kirsty de Vos who have joined the team to build and grow links with local businesses. Amy Watson said: “We are immensely proud of these humble little local mags, and go out of our way to make them so lovely that people want to keep them on their coffee tables, read them and enjoy them and use them to find local businesses. “But Rome wasn’t built in a day and we know that although we have improved the magazine loads, there is still lots of room for improvement. So if there is anything you would like to see in this, your local community magazine, then please do let us know. We are always on the look out for good ideas and who better to come up with the best ideas than the people who read and use this magazine. You!”

We replicated the original windows using our deco flush casement windows which feature specially designed sections added to the front face of the window which allow the opening sashes to appear recessed within the frame. This detail is typical of a period reproduction. If you have a period property and you are thinking of restoring it in the right way, please call us or visit our showroom.
