Moselele is so very Moseley Where else can you pop into your local pub for a quiet pint after work and stumble across a room crammed full of thirty to forty people singing and playing the ukulele? And that is just what happens if you go to the Prince of Wales on the first or third Thursday of the month. Moselele was set up by Daz Wright five years ago after his wife bought him a ukulele. He did a quick whip around on twitter and started it all off with just eight people. This has now grown to a ‘floating membership’ of around 70 people, all from Moseley and the surrounding area, and the group now performs at gigs all over the city. They have played at Artsfest, Oxjam and of course you can see them at Moseley Folk Festival every year. Last year they performed at 21 gigs - almost every week during the summer.

Anyone who can pick up a ukulele and hold a simple tune is welcome to join the band; all you need to do is turn up with your ukelele on the first or third Thursday of the month from 8pm at the Prince of Wales. Moselele also sells their own line of ukes as there are so many cheap poor quality instruments on the market they wanted to help members find a decent quality ukulele at a reasonable price.

For more information go to www.moselele.co.uk or email daz@moselele.co.uk

They play an eclectic mix of music, largely dictated by the musical tastes of the band members who range in age from their 20s to their 70s.

Music Scene with Janice Long Welcome to the first of our regular columns from local Moseleyite and Radio 2 DJ Janice Long. Janice has lived in Moseley for the last ten years and loves the sense of community spirit we have here and our exciting music scene. As well as her regular Radio 2 show she is a great advocate of live music and comperes the Moseley Folk Festival every year. Last summer was fantastic for music in Moseley. Our secret park was alive to the sounds of great bands courtesy of the Mostly Jazz Soul and Funk Festival and then the Moseley Folk Festival. We stepped out of the door and were treated to Nile Rodgers and Chic, Soul to Soul, Edwyn Collins, British Sea Power and The Dubliners and then walk home or go to The Prince of Wales where the music and party continued. Moseley is once again synonymous with music as is fellow neighbourhood Kings Heath. We are on the live music map thanks to those who have the vision to go for it.

10

We can dance our socks off on our doorstep and check out bands around the corner. It’s local, it’s lovely and it’s cheap. On my Radio 2 show I feel a sense of pride when I announce tours by various artists who include Moseley and Kings Heath in their itinerary and talking to those artists they have the most memorable times. Apparently we are a great audience. Here’s to another Moseley and Kings Heath music filled year.

Janice Long You can tune into Janice on BBC Radio 2 between 12 midnight and 2 am Monday to Friday.

wife who live in the corner house were getting a lot of complaints from the neighbours.

A lot of weather warnings went out and anyone thinking of heading to the coast was told to be especially careful.

This was on account of the funny looking boat he started building on his front drive and all the different pairs of animals that he was having delivered. When two camels turned up that was the last straw. The whole street got the hump!

Our Valerie has got a caravan in Devon that she always goes to for New Year and I said to her to follow the safety advice off the telly to “Avoid Big Waves.” I felt she was particularly at risk on account of two things about her - she has got very curly hair - and she is very friendly. I made her promise to take her hair straighteners and that if she saw anyone she knew walking on the seafront, she would just shout ‘Hiya!’ I didn’t want her to become a victim of big waves. In other weather related news when we had all that rain over Christmas. The fellah and his

Celebrate Valentines with a special showing of Casablanca Fed up with cavernous multiplexes showing big budget blockbusters? Fancy a timeless classic or a thought-provoking independent film in a traditional setting? Then Kings Heath Community Cinema is for you! In 2012, Kings Heath Village Square (KHVS) consulted with people in the area and discovered a demand for a local film club. A 2.5m screen was set up in All Saints church and the first film shown, just before Christmas 2012, was festive favourite ‘It’s A Wonderful Life.’ Since then, there have been a number of different features, drawing between 50 and 100 people each time, and audiences are continuing to grow. “Some people were wary at first,” explains Tessa Burwood, who was employed by KHVS to get the cinema project off the ground. “They thought that, because it was in a church, it was in some way connected to religion, but it really isn’t. “I love that we’ve shown irreverent films like ‘Some Like It Hot’ in this big, old fashioned space. We always have an interval with a licenced bar, so people can get a drink and chat to each other about the film. It’s very much a community event.

18

It’s very different to the multiplex experience.” Tessa is Director of cultural production company Professional Incredibles and no longer works for KHVS, but she continues to manage the project in her own time. Cultural exchange programme Espirito Brum ran a number of the film nights over the summer, and Tessa hopes that film fans, arts organisations or local businesses will eventually take over the reins. The next screening will be war torn love story Casablanca, showing at 6pm on Saturday 15th February - a perfect Valentine treat. If you’d like to know more, or are interested in running a film night yourself, visit KHCC’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/pages/Kings-HeathCommunity-Cinema/345105105600775) or email Tessa at tessaburwood@googlemail.com Alexandra Taylor Freelance writer

Taste of things to come Food lovers in Moseley were given a boost before Christmas when the village green hosted a combined street food and flea market on Sunday 22 December. This sensory threat will reoccur on the final Sunday of every month from 12pm to 4pm. Combining some of the Midlands’ best street food vendors and handpicked vintage and crafts stall holders, its aim is to attract shoppers into Moseley on otherwise quiet Sunday afternoons. The market, called the Flying Flea after a 1930s French aeroplane, is brought to you by two Moseleyites: Martin Mullaney and Leigh Wallis. Street food has been a huge hit in London in the last 10 years. No longer dominated by greasy burger vans, British street food attracts talented chefs who specialise in a handful of dishes, honing them to perfection. This is a chance for foodies to taste high-quality culinary treats for a few pounds.

20

December’s market saw vendors selling gourmet hotdogs, Southeast Asian dishes, the best rated burgers in the Midlands and exotic Caribbean dishes. The flea market itself sees a smorgasbord of artisans selling 1950s bric-a-brac, 1970s clothes and handmade objects from lamp shades to jewellery. The Flying Flea market on Sunday 23 February coincides with the Moseley Retro and Vintage Fair at the All Services Club, 91 Church Road, 12-4pm, turning the village into a collector’s hot spot for the day. The market on Sunday 30 March coincides with Mothering Sunday and lots of flower sellers are promised, just in case you need that last-minute gift.

Helping solve financial disputes within families and businesses When it comes to money, particularly if there has been a death in the family, tensions can run high and there is often a need to bring in an outsideTyndallwoods advisor to footer for use resolve the matter. In this issue’s ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ feature, we meet Manjit KaurHeer, a Solicitor who specialises in dispute resolution. Manjit advises on disputes over wills and estates, property ownership, commercial matters, insolvency, contractual issues and professional negligence. If any such disputes arise, then Manjit’s advice is to address issues as early as possible to avoid unnecessary conflict and cost. Manjit advises that where there are issues of joint ownership or occupation of property, cohabitation by unmarried couples, disabled relatives and second families, there are many opportunities for dispute. Finding a solution when people are already in dispute can be difficult. Accordingly people should seek professional advice before relationships completely break down. This will save heartache and legal fees. 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site

New Year, New Venue for The Moseley Retro & Vintage Fair Moseley Retro & Vintage Fair has proved such a hit with the public and dealers alike that it’s moving house in 2014! St Columba Church Hall in the heart of Moseley has been home to this Aladdin’s cave of collectable classics since the fair began in 2012, but the first event of 2014 will be at its new home just around the corner at the Moseley All Services Club on Church Road.

Enter Moseley All Services Club, with ample car parking spaces and a ballroom that can house 30+ stalls in one room and outside pitches if the weather is kind.

Run by vintage fans-turned-dealers Steve and Graziella, the fair features a magical mix of items from the 1920s right through to the 1980s. Whether you want a rare brooch, a 60s miniskirt, a Bakelite radio or even a set of Babycham glasses, one of the fair’s 25-plus stalls is sure to be able to help.

“But we’re looking forward to even better times in our new home – and it’s even got a licensed bar!

“We knew Moseley was crying out for a vintage fair, but even we have been blown away with the success and the all-round friendliness of the event,” says Graziella. “It’s been a real learning curve, and we’re always looking for ways to make the fair even better.”

24

“We’ll be sad to leave St Columba,” says Steve.

“So come and enjoy all the fun of the vintage fair on Sunday, 23rd February from 12noon4pm. One pound will buy you entrance to take a trip down memory lane and find a piece of the past to treasure in the future.”

More money for local charities in 2014 In 2013, TLC Lottery raised £117,500 for each of its charities; Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and Focus Birmingham. This pays for hundreds of hours of care and support for people in the area. “The plan for 2014 is to help the charities even more, increasing this amount to at least £200,000 by enrolling more Lottery Players,” explains Lottery Manager Carl Bayliss. “To do this we shall be calling at homes in Moseley and Kings Heath during the next couple of months, to give residents the opportunity to support all three of our charities for just £1 per week with a chance of winning £1,000.” Carl is pictured with Amrik Singh who will be managing the promotion on TLC’s behalf.

“I have a small team of experienced local people who really care for the TLC charities and we all look forward to the challenge of helping Carl grow the Lottery during the coming months,” adds Amrik.

The Harborne Sash Window Company specialises in high quality bespoke period timber and uPVC windows, doors, roof lanterns and orangeries fully factory finished in a range of colours. You will be served tea/coffee and cupcakes whilst being able to look at, touch, open and close, and walk through a fabulous display of windows and doors, and sit in a stunning fully furnished orangery. These offer a stylish and practical alternative to curtains or blinds. The firm also now offers a seamless integration of their product portfolio to include specially designed fascia, soffits and gutters that are in keeping with your period property.

Many people buy windows and doors just by looking at a corner sample provided by a salesman who comes to their home. Some people even buy windows and doors via the internet without any contact with the product they are purchasing. The Harborne Sash Window Company is a great source of information. Their knowledge and experience coupled with the showroom will really help you start the process on what is right for your home.

Poetry By Heart Competition at Kings Heath school Talented students from Bishop Challoner Catholic College have been entering a pioneering national competition designed to encourage pupils at school and college in England to learn and to recite poems by heart. After a round of school and college competitions, winners progressed to the county finals. The Bishop Challoner competition was organised by Mrs Kate Clarke and took place in January. Six students took part reciting two poems from the 200 available in the online anthology which supports the competition at www.poetrybyheart.org.uk. The winner was Michael Coleman and runner up was Annie McDonald ‘This contest really stretches and challenges our most able students. I knew they would rise to the challenge but they have really impressed us with the level of maturity, energy and

Saving Moseley Road Baths This year is expected to be one of the most crucial years in Moseley Road Baths’ 107 year history. The Council is determined to plough ahead with its plan to close the pool (along with numerous others around the City), but as yet has no plan for what to do with the building or how to ensure that local people can continue to swim (other than travel to Sparkhill). Friends of Moseley Road Baths’ secretary Rachel Gillies said: “We believe that the cost to our community’s health, as well as the financial cost of leaving such an important facility to lie derelict far outweighs any short term financial savings. Instead of investing in building new facilities, our Council should break from Birmingham tradition and use existing facilities, making the most of our rich architectural heritage and investing in amenities that we all need and benefit from.”

38

In December the friends of Moseley Road Baths decided to go ahead with discussions with the Council about a possible ‘Asset Transfer’ of the building out of public ownership. Rachel said: “As we’ve previously discussed, we are apprehensive about such a move and feel that it would not be in the interests of swimmers or staff. However, we are prepared to hear what options are on the table and contribute towards shaping plans to find a way to keep the facility open to the public. We anticipate that an initial meeting will take place soon.”

Does your home need a bit more space?

Have you considered turning your old cellar or basement into an office, a TV snug, a playroom, a home cinema or even a gym? This is just what a local family felt as their four boys started to get big. An increasing amount of electronic gadgets and musical instruments were taking over the house so they decided to convert the empty space in their basement for it all to go, and everyone is pleased as punch the kids have a ‘room of their own’. Basement Conversion Specialists (BCS) transformed their basement bringing with them their combined experience of 37 years in the building trade and specifically 32 years in the preservation industry. Converted basements can offer so much extra room. BCS enjoys the challenge of bringing to life your dreams and seeing them become reality in a short space of time and within a budget. BCS has worked with small houses to stately homes, and everything in between. They are experienced in diagnosing and solving preservation problems, but recently they have decided to

concentrate on basement waterproofing although they do still work with all aspects of preservation. BCS help customers visualise and then bring to fruition what they want without impacting on the remainder of the home. They are friendly, informative, trustworthy, qualified and competitive. They work both locally and further afield. All their work complies with the latest British Standards and the highest quality of materials. The BCS team comprises CSSW (Certified Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing) surveyors and builders.

For more information or to schedule a free, no-obligation survey of your basement, please contact Basement Conversion Specialists on 07582 050 860 or 07870 911 743 bcspecialists@hotmail.com www.basementconversionspecialists.co.uk.

New Year New You New Year’s resolutions are an annual ritual for many of us, a way of making a statement to the world that we are going to make a positive change in ourselves for the future. According to statistics, the top New Year’s resolution in 2012 was to lose weight, but the reality is just one in 11 people stick to their resolutions for at least six months, with just under half breaking their resolution within a fortnight. The main reason given for breaking resolutions is lack of willpower, and as anyone who has tried to lose weight before knows, willpower is crucial to success. Making only one resolution makes it easier to stick to; trying to juggle several in one go can be stressful and ultimately result in you giving up. With just one goal to concentrate on will increase your chances of success. Planning your resolution in advance will give you time to think about your goal and how to achieve it. If you want to drop a dress size, or shed your beer belly, then making sure you know what you want gives you a clear goal to reach.

42

Spare of the moment decisions are quick to make, but also quick to break. Setting smaller, easily achievable goals along the way help to keep you on track, such as losing 2lb per week until you reach your overall goal. This will help keep your interest, as sometimes long term goals can seem so far away that they become unobtainable. Planning a reward for when you successfully reach your goal is a great incentive to keep you focused and on track during your weight loss journey. If your goal is to lose weight for a summer holiday, then why not treat yourself to some new clothes to show off your new figure and give yourself a welldeserved reward for all your hard work.

The event is organised by the Kings Heath Business Improvement District (BID) and the awards were presented by Chairman of the BID Neville Summerfield. There was also a special award for Kings Heath business champion. This award was dedicated to the late Catherine Edwards, known as Cathy to friends and family. Kate Smart, Town Centre Manager said: “Sadly, Cathy passed away last year from pancreatic cancer. She was an enterprising businesswoman who put her everything into improving Kings Heath’s retail sector.

44

“She played an instrumental role in setting up the Kings Heath Business Improvement District in 2008 and was latterly elected Chair. This award goes to Cathy, recognising her dedication and commitment to Kings Heath.”

Safer streets in Moseley and Kings Heath Street Watch, a scheme lead by the local police, continues to be a success in Moseley and Kings Heath with a second scheme due to be launched in February. The Westfield Road Street Watch group will be launched to allow local volunteers to work in partnership with officers. Moseley and Kings Heath wards already have the Moor Green Street Watch scheme that has been very successful and praised by locals in the area. Street Watch members carry out unpaid, regulated civilian street patrols for a minimum of two hours a month. Working in pairs, they tackle anti-social behaviour and provide a visible, reassuring presence across their neighbourhoods. The scheme helps to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour in the area and support police officers in improving the quality of life. Street Watch members are making a massive impact, by providing reassurance in their communities and joining officers to tackle low level crime.

50

The police are interested in hearing from anyone that would like to become a member of Street Watch or members of the community who would be interested in starting a scheme. Street watch is about local people coming together to support their community and make it a safer place to live and work. The community spirit in Moseley and Kings Heath is fantastic which is why the scheme works so well. The police are very pleased with the Moor Green Street Watch scheme and anticipate that the Westfield Street Watch will be just as successful.

Moseley Charity wins Post Office cash Moseley’s Post Office has won one of 25 grants being handed out to branches across the country, which will be channelled into the community with its neighbours in the Moseley Exchange. As part of its Community Enterprise Fund, the Post Office has awarded grants of up to £10,000 to 25 branches across England. Moseley Post Office in Birmingham successfully entered the competition with its charity partner, Moseley Community Development Trust (CDT). The Post Office will contribute £10,000 towards a joint venture between Moseley Post Office and Moseley CDT, a registered charity, to promote community initiatives at the Moseley Exchange: the community hub based next to Moseley Post Office. The funds will be used to introduce new signage and noticeboards, advertising community projects working from the Moseley Exchange and awarding 5 new social entrepreneurs free membership of the co-working space to help start their business.

Sunil Ghai from Moseley Post Office said, “We’re excited about working with Moseley CDT in this new way. Many sub-postmasters already offer facilities and services which go far beyond their core business. Now, we have an opportunity to strengthen our role in the community by becoming the shop window for the Moseley Exchange; our community hub.” Steve Harding from Moseley CDT said: “We’re really pleased to be working with our local Post Office. Our resources are limited but the Post Office can help us reach more people in need and promote our work. “We’re also interested in supporting local enterprise so we plan to launch a young social entrepreneurs competition with the Post Office and others. This is a rapidly growing area of business and one that fits well with Moseley.”

Beer festival will be a barrel of fun Two charities will be raising a glass to drinkers next month as pints make pounds at the inaugural Moseley & Kings Heath Beer Festival. Maddie’s Fighting Fund, in aid of Dickens Heath youngster Maddie Hems, and All Saints Youth Project have been nominated as beneficiaries for the two-day festival being held at Kings Heath Cricket Club on 7 and 8 February. The festival is the latest initiative from Moseley Round Table, which will be laying on more than 20 plus beers and ciders – including one brewed by the club’s current chairman James Gregory. The doors open at 4pm on Friday with entertainment from Kings Heath-based ukulele band Carlo Mahalo and the G Strings. On Saturday the action starts from 12pm and includes live Six Nations rugby during the day with a charity casino and live music in the evening. The event has been supported by Kings Heath Business Association and its members, a number of whom have sponsored a barrel to help the fundraising.

Gregory said: “As a keen brewer I have wanted to stage a beer festival for a while, which is also a great addition to Moseley Round Table’s packed calendar. “It’s another brilliant community event, which will raise funds for two very local causes. We’re grateful to the club for hosting us and also the support of our various sponsors.” Non-beer and cider drinkers will be catered for by the venue, which will also be doing a themed menu to tie in with the rugby. Entry to the beer festival is £10 which includes a souvenir glass and £6 worth of beer tokens. A limited number of tickets are available from Johnstans Butchers, Kings Heath High Street, or pay on the day. For more details go to www.moseleyandkingsheathbeerfestival.co.uk
