Local Legend - Steve Ajao Anyone familiar with the local music scene will almost certainly have heard of Steve Ajao. As well as performing with his band The Blues Giants for over three decades, he’s played with trumpet legend Red Rodney, supported Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and once took blues giant BB King for chips down the Ladypool Road. However, what many people don’t know is that Steve’s creative talents don’t end with music - the visual arts have also played a huge part in his life. As a child he was asked to paint the school hall with murals, secured a place at Moseley School of Arts and Crafts and went on to study graphic design at art college in Coventry. Over the years he’s worked as an illustrator and printer. He’s also produced drawings and portraits to commission and has two workshops at his home where he makes and repairs guitars. It’s a miracle that Steve’s still here to tell us about his fascinating life. Ten years ago, he was hit by a car which put him in a coma for three

weeks and in hospital for six months. Despite this, and the inevitable advancing years, Steve shows no signs of slowing down. He gigs every weekend, and usually mid week as well. He runs jazz night Club Bebop (currently at the Dark Horse in Moseley), recently completed a run of flamenco guitar gigs at Sabai Sabai in Harborne and will be very busy at numerous music festivals over the summer. As we sit chatting over a coffee in Maison Mayci in Kings Heath, I can’t help wondering if there’s anything he can’t do. “I’m awful at maths,” he confesses. “I passed my eleven plus, but I know zero about arithmetic.” That may be so, but there’s no doubt of his prowess with musical numbers. What is the future for the Moseley property market in 2015? Daniel Sperber of specialist Moseley letting agent IQ PROPERTY sheds some light on the subject for us. A number of landlords, who own property in Moseley, have made contact with me recently asking for my thoughts on the future of the buy to let market in Moseley. Property values rose by 5.35% in the last 12 months in Moseley. Good news, but when you consider local property values have previously dropped by 18.7% between December 2007 and November 2009, this is not as good as the media would have you believe. It should come as no great surprise that Moseley property values are starting to slow as we head into 2015. Local property values were growing at 1% a month last summer, but in the last few months of 2014, they slowed to a mere 0.27% monthly increase. In reality we’ve had two and half years of decent market conditions in Moseley, but now all that pent up demand is starting to fade. The big question now is whether the Moseley property market will be held back by affordability and restricted mortgage lending, and what long term impact this will have. Looking at Birmingham as a whole, because we can’t look at Moseley on its own, the recent rapid rise in house values in early 2014,

along with earnings rising below inflation and the possibility of an interest rate rise, appear to have tempered housing demand. This has led to a modest easing in both property price growth and sales. A moderation in growth looks likely into 2015 as supply and demand become better balanced. Now, with the general election looming, whichever government takes power, they, along with the Bank of England, have a thorny job to do in balancing the expected interest rate rise with the continued resurgence of the housing market, to ensure the property market doesn’t drop, forcing people into selling at a loss. For further thoughts on the Moseley property market, please visit the Moseley Property Blog. Daniel Sperber

Lawn Care Tips for Spring Summer may feel like a long way off, but if you want your lawn to be at its best for all those garden parties and barbecues, then now is the time to start giving it some TLC. So here are a few handy words of advice from local lawn-care specialist Phil Harrison. The dark, damp days of winter mean that your garden may have become overrun with moss, particularly in shady areas under trees or fences. Helping your lawn fight back is a four step process starting with a treatment to attack the moss. Secondly, scarify the lawn with a rake to get rid of as much moss as possible, next re-seed any bare patches and finally put in place a fertilisation programme to strengthen the grass. Whilst this approach is

perfect for small areas, the job on the whole of your lawn could prove time consuming and hard work! Calling in a lawn-care professional with specialist machinery, products and expertise can save you time and money in the long run.

If you'd like to know more please call Phil Harrison, Lawnscience Solihull, on 07917 004 450.

Alone on Valentine's Day? Good! It’s Valentine’s Day and you’re on your own. But this is no reason to feel down. This is an opportunity to spoil and indulge the most important person in your life - YOU! While others are running around desperately trying to guess which romantic cliché will persuade their partner to put up with them for another year, you can spend time and effort pleasing yourself, indulging and spoiling the one person guaranteed never to leave you. One option is to take yourself on a classy date. Get dressed up in your smartest outfit and admire yourself in the mirror. Perhaps even pay yourself a compliment or two. Set the table with the good crockery and prepare that exotic dish you’ve been wanting to try. Who better to experiment on? You won’t hold it against yourself if it doesn’t come out quite right. Buy yourself some flowers and chocolates, and even write yourself a card listing all the wonderful things about you. After all, you know yourself better than anybody. Forget modesty and self criticism - Valentine’s Day is a time to give yourself a little love and remind yourself how special you are.

Another option is to indulge in an evening of pampering and grooming. Soak in a hot bath, pluck your eyebrows, file your nails, shave what needs shaving, moisturise everywhere - then sit back and admire the results. Afterwards you can relax with your favourite book, watch your favourite movie, play your favourite game or listen to your favourite album. Whatever makes you happiest. There’s only one person you are stuck with for life. They may not always treat you as you deserve, or keep their promises, or even like you all the time, but you can’t get by without them. So take the time to get to know yourself, learn to love yourself and make yourself happy. Alone for Valentine’s Day? Good. Now make the most of it! Alexandra Taylor

Rugby – The modern sport for women “YOU play women’s rugby? Are you mad?!” Something a female player will hear a few times throughout their rugby career, but more and more recently skeptics are coming around to the idea of ladies rucking, tackling, mauling and delivering spectacular hand-offs to each other on the rugby pitch. Stereotypically, rugby is seen as a masculine sport, because on our televisions and in our newspapers the majority of rugby related news is about the men’s game and seeing women play is something to be compared to watching a dog walk on its hind legs… you’re not sure if they should be doing it but you want to watch out of a curious desire to see what will happen. Women’s rugby is vastly becoming popular in the UK, especially after the England Ladies winning the World Cup last year (that’s right, England winning a world cup!) and where better to join than part of Birmingham’s biggest rugby club, Moseley. The Women’s Rugby team at Moseley play in the Championship 2 league around the Midlands and welcome ladies with varied fitness levels, ages and backgrounds. The team is made up of your every day rugby playing superheroes who are

teachers, doctors, students and office workers by day but take sheer enjoyment out of pushing their bodies to the limit three times a week training and playing rugby. If you consider yourself competitive, willing to dig deep and play hard and with heart this is the sport for you. Simply turn up at the open training sessions at Moseley Rugby Ground on Billesley lane (B13 0PT) at 19:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays or contact nic@mwrfc.co.uk for some more information. If you do not wish to take part or have a Y chromosome please become a dedicated fan and follow them on Facebook (/MoseleyWomensRugby) and Twitter (@MoseleyWomenRFC).

Things people never tell you... Why do many of us feel too embarrassed to tell someone when their breath smells? It is incredibly personal, and often something we’re unaware of …unless you’re on the receiving end! Most of the time bad breath (halitosis) is temporary, caused by our habits (smoking, coffee, spicy food) or digestive problems and can often be prevented by drinking more water. Sometimes it is caused by not effectively removing plaque on our teeth, gums and tongue. When food is not removed from between the teeth it attracts bugs and bacteria, and if left to linger the bacteria (plaque) produces unpleasant mouth odours.

These are my top tips • Drink plenty of water • Use an electric toothbrush – replace the head every 3 months and never share! • Use dental floss/TePe brushes • Stop smoking • Visit the dentist regularly • Drink more water Dr Manoj Parmar Acorn Implant & Dental Practice Small, award winning family dental practice 208 Swanshurst Lane, Moseley, Birmingham, B13 0AW T: 0121 777 1537 www.aidp.co.uk

Shared parental leave New changes in employment law mean that both parents can share parental leave during the first year of their baby’s life.

Tyndallwoods This is great news for young families but could be a major headache for employers according to Kate Garrett of Edgbaston law firm Tyndallwoods Solicitors. “Anyone who meets the minimum eligibility requirements - man or woman - having a baby on or after April 2015 can put in a claim for shared parental leave” said Kate. “Mothers will be able to end their maternity leave early and share the remainder of their leave with their partner. Shared parental leave does not have to be taken in a single continuous period - leave periods can be as short as a week and both parents can take it at the same time. “Companies need to have a policy in place and communicate it to their staff. Employers may also wish to draft model notification forms for employees to help them comply with the legal requirements, as well as model forms for the employer to respond to employee notices.

Ready Steady Bake! During March – Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice’s birthday month – people across Birmingham and Sandwell will be getting into the baking mood to help raise funds for their local hospice. Whether you bake or buy, get out your best china or buy vintage paper plates, all the money raised will help over 1,000 local families living with terminal illness. You could hold a cake sale at home, a coffee morning in your local church or a bakeoff at work. The Final Year Committee at the University of Birmingham did just that and organised a bake-off to raise money for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice. The event attracted 70 visitors and was a huge success for all involved. The cake entries were divided into the Best Show Stopper, Cupcakes, Tray bakes, Savoury, Treats and Cake categories. The group even arranged for Brendan Lynch, Great British Bake-off finalist from series three, to come along and judge the competition. Creative talents were very evident when the cakes went on display with some extremely

high quality offerings, and the bake-off raised a fantastic £150. Sarah BarberJones, Fundraising Projects Officer says: “The Final Year Committee organised a fantastic event which was greatly enjoyed by all who attended. It was great to have Brendan on board; there were so many delicious cakes for Brendan to judge, but he was very gracious and took his time to taste them all, so he could come to a fair decision. Ready Steady Bake is a fun and simple way for people to support their local hospice. All money raised from this campaign will help support local people who are dealing with terminal illness in Birmingham and Sandwell.” To get your free Ready Steady Bake pack, visit: www.birminghamhospice.org. uk/bake or speak to a member of the fundraising team on 0121 472 1191.

Making Friends in Later Life Through bereavement, ill health, family moving away or retirement, many of us find ourselves becoming more isolated as we get older. But there are a number of ways to stay social in later life. U3A (the University of the Third Age) is a national organisation which aims to bring retired and semi-retired people together to learn new things. There’s a Moseley, Kings Heath and District branch which costs £20 a year to join and runs a huge variety of groups on topics as diverse as German Conversation, Indian Cookery, Ukelele for Fun and Woodworking. Visit http://mkhdu3a.org.uk to find out more.

And finally, Age UK (www.ageuk.org.uk) is the country’s largest charity dedicated to helping everyone make the most of later life. They run a huge number of support schemes to help combat loneliness, and have an office on Kings Heath High Street which offers information on all kinds of products and services for the over 50s. You can also call their advice line on 0800 169 6565.

The wealth of charity shops in Kings Heath and Moseley (see page 37) is also a fantastic opportunity to donate some spare time, support a good cause, keep your mind active and meet dozens of people in the local community. There’s as much work to do sorting, cleaning and preparing donations as there is serving on the till. Keep an eye out for ‘volunteers needed’ signs in shop windows, or pop in and ask about opportunities.

Alexandra Taylor

Kings Heath Park is bursting with opportunities to make friends through gentle physical activities such as dog walking, rambling, playing bowls or even doing tai chi - in many cases followed by tea and cake in the Victorian Tea Rooms. Check out the notice boards, or ask in the cafe for times and days.

Celebrating Our Charity Shops There are over fifteen charity shops on, or just off, the high street running through Moseley and Kings Heath. Between them they raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for good causes as diverse as combating poverty, providing hospice care for adults and children, supporting people with mental health issues, giving medical care to sick pets, helping vulnerable children and caring for older people. But it’s not just the charities themselves that reap the rewards - the customers, staff and community all benefit from their presence. Mandy has been a volunteer at Oxfam Bookshop in Moseley since it opened five years ago. As a retired teacher, she loves the social side of working in the shop. “Not only do I feel like I’m supporting a very worthwhile charity, but it’s a lovely place to work surrounded by books and music, and theres a lot of variety in the job too.” Sarah is one of four paid members of staff at the British Heart Foundation shop in Kings Heath. “We have over fifty volunteers,” she explains. “Many of them are doing NVQs, and we’re also starting to put on CPR

training too. It’s a great way for them to get work experience and build up their skills.” As for the community, Sarah also believes that the large number of charity shops in Kings Heath draws bargain hunters into the area, benefitting other retailers in the process. Ladi, who runs Oxfam Books & Music in Kings Heath, says that the shop is keen to expand its programme of author and music events, adding to the range of creative community events for local people. But the bargains on the shelves are the real star of the show. Books, CDs, pictures, handbags, ties, furniture, ornaments, jewellery, greetings cards, shoes, musical instruments, bedding, crockery, brand name clothing - all this and more can be found at extremely affordable prices. So next time you’re looking for that perfect gift, pick up a bargain from a charity shop and give a little back to society at the same time. Alexandra Taylor

What are burglars looking for in a good target? And more to the point - does your house fit the bill? According to Jason Holgate of Knight Security Systems, burglars are opportunists, they are after an easy target. And here are a few clues they look for: • no burglar alarm or a dilapidated alarm • no security lights • big bushes in front of the house • rickety old back door • easy access to the back - the majority of break-ins are at the rear • flat roof with a window Jason goes on to say that he is seeing more burglaries take place whilst the homeowner is at home. And he also sees many cases where there is an alarm but it hasn’t been

used for some time because the owners have got out of the habit or there is a minor fault they haven’t got round to sorting out. Alarm and CCTV systems have really moved with the times. You can now have an app on your phone and control lights going on and off, de-activate the alarm remotely, check CCTV cameras. You can even check when your children get home from school and link a smoke detector to the alarm. If you want to give burglars less reason to target your home then call Knight Security for a free home security check on 0121 706 5799.

Community heroes Trustees of charities are a rare breed, selfless people who give up their precious time for the benefit of others. These people are to be congratulated and thanked - but above all else they are to be equipped with the right tools for the job, according to Helen Blundell, Associate Director Charities and Not for Profit at chartered accountants MHA Bloomer Heaven. Helen said: “At this time of year many charities will have appointed new trustees to their board and those trustees may still be getting to grips with this new role. “However, many people are trustees of charities without even realising it. If you are the chair, treasurer, or secretary of a PTA for example or a scout or guide leader, a school governor of an academy, or a Parish Church Council member, then you are a trustee of a charity and this role comes with specific responsibilities for which you can be held to account. “If you are a trustee of a charity and not fully aware of your responsibilities you are not alone. We run regular seminar events to share our expertise. The Charity Commission produces plenty of online advice and guidance but as their helpline has reduced its opening hours it can sometimes be a little daunting to find where to start. Support for charities and their trustees from specialist advisers like us is increasingly relevant. “The main thing a trustee must consider is their duty of care to their charity or non profit

organisation. There are a number of key questions that they should ask themselves in regard to any aspect of activity they undertake on behalf of that organisation.” • How does this fulfil our objectives? • Is this for the public benefit? • What are the financial / repetitional risks? • What are the costs? Both money and time • Do we need professional advice? • Should we consider anything else? Save the date MHA Bloomer Heaven is holding its next trustee training events for new or existing trustees on 24 February and 19 March. Places are limited to a maximum of 10 delegates per workshop so book your place early to be guaranteed a place. The cost is £40+vat per delegate reduced to £20+vat for charities with an income of less than £100,000. For details contact Helen Blundell on helen.blundell@bloomerheaven.co.uk

No more Moseley in Bloom? RHS judges came to Moseley again last summer. Under the headings Horticultural Achievement, Environmental Responsibility and Community Participation, they awarded Gold. Furthermore, The Village pub won Gold. Billesley Lane Allotments and Maple Dene Care Home were ‘Outstanding’ and Sorrento Court sheltered housing and Springfield Allotment Project were judged ‘Thriving.’ “However, it’s not all green and clean,” says Carol Miller chair of Moseley in Bloom. “The centre of Moseley can let us down. Justin Barnett our wonderful street cleaner really went the extra mile over the days before judging. Repeated littering, dumping of rubbish, flyposting and graffiti followed each clean-up. Serious vandalism ruined hanging baskets in the village.” “We hoped to get the dirty pavements jet-washed and asked the Pubwatch group to contribute, as their customers make a lot of the mess. Although we had no formal reply, we heard informally that they would not pay,” she continued. “Last year we had difficulty recruiting volunteers to help with fundraising, publicity, schools liaison and coordination of Open Gardens weekend. If these roles can be filled, Moseley in Bloom will be more sustainable. At the moment, activities are undertaken by a diminishing number of people,” she said.

The Moseley in Bloom Committee and Trustees wonder whether anyone would miss it if it stopped completely. There are a number of possibilities: • Open Gardens will only run this year if a coordinator can be found. • The market stall will stop although there may be Plant Swops • Pubs will be encouraged to enter the Pubs and Hotels category and other community groups to enter It’s Your Neighbourhood. • The hanging baskets and floral boxes in Moseley Village will be reduced and businesses will be told how to organise these themselves if they want them. “We welcome comments on this plan. We believe Moseley in Bloom has enhanced the appearance and increased the pride we have in Moseley. Please contact us if you have ideas on how this could be maintained,” said Carol. Hey there, would you like to connect? Making connections is so critical to our mental health that scientists put it up there with thirst and hunger. If you’re eager for more ways to connect with the community don’t worry, we can help... If you have any projects, news or events of local interest tell us, and we’ll spread the word. Getting in touch is simple, just follow and mention us @My_Moseley_KH and www.facebook.com/My-Moseley-KH and let us know your news and what you think of the magazine. How better to understand and be a part of the community than knowing each one of you? Don’t be shy, think of our Facebook and Twitter pages as a community noticeboard. Being community orientated means we want to know what you think… about everything.

So let's get connected? Ruby Watson

If the saccharine romance of Valentine’s Day has you running for the hills, then ‘Ava’s Wedding - An English Tragedy’ could be just the antidote you need. Not only is Ava Blackwell marrying a man she doesn’t love, all her friends and family are struggling with feuds, illness, money troubles, work stress and a whole raft of secrets that threaten to undermine her big day. It’s enough to put anyone off saying ‘I do.’ This brand new English opera, created by Kings Heath writing team Alexandra Taylor and Michael Wolters, has its world premiere at the Crescent Theatre at the end of February - just two weeks after the world’s most popular day for wedding proposals. Newly engaged couples should perhaps steer clear. Or maybe it’s a reassuring reminder that there’s no way their wedding day will be as traumatic as Ava’s. For soprano Eleanor Hodkinson, one of two singers playing the title role, it’s come at an especially strange time. By day she’s rehearsing as a fictional bride; by night she’s planning her own real life ceremony, due to take place in July. “I like to think of myself as being very sensible and quite blunt,” she says.

“I don’t think I’d get myself into the situation that Ava does. But although it seems ridiculous, I know these things really do happen.” “It’s crazy, and very unexpected,” says Rachel Crisp, the other performer stepping into Ava’s 1980’s meringue-style wedding dress. “But I think it’s brilliant and very well written and I’m really looking forward to bringing it to the stage.” The opera is being performed by students from the prestigious Birmingham Conservatoire, and has been double cast to give as many performers as possible a chance to showcase their considerable talents. To find out if Ava makes it to the church on time, book your tickets at www. crescent-theatre.co.uk or call the Box Office on 0121 643 5858.

Get your project funded by the community! The kindness of strangers is changing business... Have you ever dreamt of the day when a common need could be recognised and the resources and platform to fill that need were readily available to you? Well CrowdPatch offers exactly that. Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or simply have some exciting ideas that would benefit your community, this is the place for those innovative thoughts to become a reality. We at My Solihull have recently set up a South Birmingham and Solihull ‘patch’ on CrowdPatch to help you start a crowd funding campaign. Here are some handy pointers to bear in mind before your ideas take flight...

make little effort to learn about your campaign - people have incredibly short attention spans!

1. Fully develop your proposal, half baked campaigns won’t capture the imagination / faith of your audience.

8. Keep everybody in the loop! Communication is key to maintaining interest and holding onto your supporting community, they’ll appreciate the news whether it’s good or bad.

2. Your supporters want to be as involved as possible, introduce yourself / your team properly and keep things personal. 3. Get the wheels in motion before you start a campaign, if you don’t already have a community to tap into, try and get the attention of a handful of influential figures who might be interested in your project. 4. Social media; start hash tag trends and tap into your existing social network to gain initial support for your campaign. 5. Make a video! Visually marketing your proposal on social media allows people to

6. Make a web page. Your campaign may be a local niche or an international interest, making a web page will allow anyone who’s interested in helping promote your cause have instant access to a press release they can post as well as all your vital information. 7. Don’t ask for money immediately, people will naturally want to support your ideas once you’ve captured their interest, what you need to think about most is what you can offer them in exchange for their support. If nothing else you can always remember to thank your donors.

Ruby Watson Call or email us - we’d be happy to spend time discussing your project ideas, we’re here to help. 0121 689 0432 rubywatson@swanpublishing.org You can also visit our patch online at www. crowdpatch.co.uk/southbirmingham
