Return to the Fold Michelle and Collette Kelly are bursting with ideas. Fresh from an eighteen month stint running the cafe in Kings Heath’s All Saints Centre, Colette has returned to the Victorian Tea Rooms in Kings Heath Park with a renewed sense of purpose. “It was a great experience,” says Colette. “We did work a lot with the community, which is something we’re really proud of. We provided meals at cost to the lunch club and supplied free tea and mince pies to the St Mary’s Hospice Santa Run.” But while they enjoyed being in the heart of the community, they’re happy to be back in the park. “We’re a small family business and it was hard trying to work over two sites. My workload is more manageable now and I’m much happier. My mum’s glad to have me back too.” New developments at the Tea Rooms are also being driven by a changing clientele. “We’ve always had a lot of older customers, but we’ve noticed there are more groups of younger people coming to the park - running clubs, mums with small children. It’s prompted us to put on more diverse events, such as Spanish classes, craft clubs and wine tasting sessions run by Birmingham Wine School. “We are in the process of rebranding the business and hope to launch a new exciting menu, longer

opening hours and with more theme nights including Jive and Salsa evenings. After the success of the wine tasting evenings we plan to run more. We also hope to offer a delivery service and take part in farmers markets this coming year. “And if that’s not enough, we are also always on the lookout for local artists to come and work with us to exhibit their work.” However, some things remain the same. The family are just as committed to using local, ethically sourced ingredients as much as possible, and even use produce from the nearby Television Gardens on the other side of the park. You can’t get much more local than that. by Alexandra Taylor

The Victorian Tea Rooms are open from 10.30am to 4.30pm everyday, with plans to open from 9am to 7pm over the summer months.

A Dog is for Life It’s a sad fact that February and March usually see an upsurge in the number of abandoned dogs as the practical reality of those cute Christmas presents kicks in. But if you’re struggling to cope with the furry member of your family, help is at hand. Pawfect Dogsense offers obedience training in Kings Heath Park and uses positive reinforcement to help train both dogs and their owners. As assistant trainer Sara says, “If you expect your dog to understand human, then you should make an effort to understand dog.” “The first thing we do in puppy classes is to teach the owner how to desensitise their dog to touch and examination, which makes trips to the vet much easier.” Owners then learn how to get their dogs to sit, wait and come back, and the classes also help dogs socialise with each other. Trainer Hannah also offers agility sessions with jumps and hoops, socialisation walks and one-to-one training at home for a more individually tailored plan. However, even with the most well behaved dogs, some owners struggle to find the time to give them the attention they need, and that’s where a professional pet sitter can help out. Since launching Second City Pet Services in June, Eleanor has helped care for dozens of local pets, including one African pigmy hedgehog. Her main business is dog walking, but she also feeds animals in their homes and boards pets at her own house while owners are on holiday.

“They provide everything,” she says, “food, bedding, toys, instructions. I just provide the care. I basically look after their pet as if it was my own.” Sara urges anyone thinking of getting a dog to adopt from a shelter and give an abandoned pet a new home, while Eleanor is keen to stress the importance of doing your research, to prevent problems in the future. “Too many people choose a dog on what it looks like and don’t realise how much exercise it needs. It’s important to pick a breed that is suitable for your family, your house and the amount of time you have.” by Alexandra Taylor

Drama, Comedy and Family Shows at the REP

The star cast of Single Spies

Jonathan Coe’s The Rotters’ Club, bold new interpretations of Shakespeare plays, a ground-breaking new production of The Government Inspector, plus a major revival of Alan Bennett’s Single Spies feature in The REP’s 2016 spring season, alongside many other gripping plays and performances. Jonathan Coe’s The Rotters’ Club, bold new interpretations of Shakespeare plays, a groundbreaking new production of The Government Inspector, plus a major revival of Alan Bennett’s Single Spies feature in The REP’s 2016 spring season, alongside many other gripping plays and performances. Exploring the enduring fascination with royalty and Russian spies is an award-winning double bill by Alan Bennett. Single Spies (17-27 February) chronicles the lives of two of the ‘Cambridge Five’ spy ring in the 1950s and this new staging features a star cast including Nicholas Farrell, Belinda Lang and David Robb. The REP’s Artistic Director, Roxana Silbert, directs a ground breaking new version of Gogol’s satirical masterpiece The Government Inspector (19-26 March). Jonathan Coe’s iconic 1970s coming-of-age novel, The Rotters’ Club (2-9 April) is brought to life on stage for the first time in an adaptation by Richard Cameron. It follows the hilarious and, at times, touching trials and tribulations of growing

up in an era of IRA bombs, industrial strife and punk rock, inspired by Jonathan’s Coe’s own school days in Birmingham. Marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, The REP presents new versions of two of his plays. Acclaimed stage and screen actor Don Warrington plays one of Shakespeare’s most iconic roles in King Lear (19-28 May) and visiting The REP for the first time is experimental theatre company, Filter, with their radically-cut, fast-paced version of Shakespeare’s much-loved comedy Twelfth Night (12-16 April). The season also features the Olivier Awardwinning The 39 Steps (28 February-5 March) and West End phenomenon The Father (3-7 May). Plus, there’s plenty for younger theatre fans to enjoy with Jaqueline Wilson’s Hetty Feather (8-12 March) and the popular First Stages shows created especially for families. For more information about these shows and the other shows in their season, visit www.birmingham-rep.co.uk.

On The Rebound The Beatles visited Birmingham several times in the 1960s, but their first gig in the city was right here in our neighbourhood, at the nowdemolished Ritz on York Road in Kings Heath on 15th February 1963. Kings Heath Walk of Fame has organised an annual Beatles Fest since 2013, the 50th anniversary of that historic performance. With three successful events under their belt, and the 50th anniversary of iconic album ‘Rubber Soul’ approaching, the decision was made to make the 2016 event even more special by recreating the album with an array of local performers. ‘Rubber Soul Rebound’ was recorded and mixed at local Highbury Studio, one of the few remaining analogue recording studios in the country. The album features fourteen iconic tracks, including Drive My Car, Nowhere Man and In My Life, all brought to life by a wide variety of local performers such as Trevor Burton from 60s rock band The Move, ViX from 80s pop band Fuzzbox and rising singer-songwriter Hannah Brown. “It all snowballed very quickly,” explain organisers Bob Prew and Ken Whittaker. “We wanted to involve people who’ve played for us before, as a way of saying thank you. Others got involved through Rob Peters from Highbury Studio. There are so many great musicians in this area, we’re so pleased they wanted to get involved.”

500 limited edition CDs have been pressed and you can pick one up from Polar Bear Records on York Road for just £10. In keeping with the retro theme, each is a beautifully tactile recreation of a vinyl disc, complete with grooves. Digital downloads are available from bandcamp.com and proceeds go to Kings Heath Walk of Fame, a local charity whose mission is to celebrate and commemorate the area’s illustrious musical heritage, while supporting up and coming local musicians. by Alexandra Taylor

This year’s Beatles Fest will be taking place on Valentine’s Day with an appropriate ‘All You Need Is Love’ theme. There’ll be a performance of ‘Rubber Soul Rebound’ plus music from top tribute band The Mersey Beatles. Go to www.kingsheathwalkoffame. org.uk for details.

National success for local musicians Two Birmingham boys are delighted to hear that they have gained places in the National Youth Orchestra.

Both are pupils in Year 12 at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys in King’s Heath. Harry Atkinson has gained a place for the third year in a row, and this year becomes co-principal of the Double Bass section. Lucas Houldcroft has a place in the trumpet section. The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the most prestigious Youth Orchestra in the country, is made up of 165 members aged 13 to 19. Musicians must have grade 8 with distinction on their instrument before they may audition, and they then have to audition again every year, competing against the best instrumentalists in the country. Music thrives at the King Edward VI Camp Hill Schools where three orchestras and three bands plus numerous other ensembles and choirs rehearse each week.

Lusting after a lush lawn this spring? With spring on its way at last and the nights getting longer you want your lawn looking its best for all those beckoning garden parties and barbecues. So here are a few handy words of advice from local lawn-care specialist Phil Harrison of Lawnscience. Unfortunately, as the grass wakes up after its winter snooze, so do the weeds. Dandelions, buttercups and daisies can quickly take over as summer approaches, so start your lawn care regime by tackling them with an appropriate weed killer. Once the weeds have been sent packing, it’s time to fertilise your grass, building its strength and getting it lush and green for the summer. But be

Join a sharing community Quite often when we need to fulfil a job we pop along to our nearest store to purchase the item we need, once we have used the item we then use it once in a while if at all! What a waste on the pocket and the environment. Thus the idea of borrowing was born. The notion of borrowing is now intrinsically associated with debt, but this is not that kind of borrowing. This is the kind of borrowing that restores camaraderie in a community. Borroclub proposes that instead of spending money on an item you will only use once or once in a while you no longer have to waste your money on these one off purchases, instead for a small fee you can not only borrow things from your neighbours but also lend things too. In this way the system pays for itself, while providing some assurances that things are treated with respect or don’t go missing. Joining the sharing economy will also have a direct affect on the amount of waste your community makes - or potential lack thereof. The festive period may have all but emptied your pockets, but with what’s left you can still live your life without a care in the world. Can’t justify buying a bike? Or find anywhere to keep

24

it? Well your neighbour is hiring his out for £3 per day. Can’t justify buying a gazebo for your garden party? A charity nearby is hiring theirs out for £10 per day. So suddenly all of the weird and wonderful things your community has chosen to spend their money on, becomes accessible to anyone who needs it. This concept captured our special attention for many reasons but particularly because it’s such a fantastic opportunity to connect with your neighbours; those lovely people in your community who want to share their things with you (so you know they must be nice!) Make a friend today and save the world a little bit while you do it by getting involved in a sharing community with the Borroclub.

Get started lending and borrowing by visiting: www.borroclub.co.uk

Caroline Shaw, a gardener and great friend of Tyndallwoods helps run the event.

A time to remember

Spring is a time to remember lost loved ones at Tyndallwoods in Edgbaston, a wills and probate solicitor firm with strong links to Edward’s Trust bereavement charity. Judy Dyke, a director at for Tyndallwoods (and a patron of Tyndallwoods footer use Edward’s Trust) takes great care in their annual snowdrop planting memorial service in March. After the depths of winter, snowdrops are the first flowers to appear in the spring, symbolising hope and a new beginning. The flowers come up year after year, representing the passage of time. The snowdrop memorial service is designed to acknowledge grief and recognise its part in many peoples’ lives. Clients and friends who have suffered loss are invited and many come year after year, planting new snowdrops and seeing the old ones come back. There is even a cluster of the original snowdrops planted in memory of Edward, whose childhood death in 1988 sparked the establishment of Edward’s Trust charity, which has helped many people come through the painful journey of bereavement over the last 25 years. Poignant poems and readings are read aloud validating the emotions felt by the people attending. 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site

30

At first My very name was grief, my eyes only saw grief, my thoughts were grief. And everything I touched was turned to grief. Judy said: “This event helps people to cope with their loss by bringing together those who have had similar experiences.” The service is held on the grounds of Tyndallwoods’ office on Woodbourne Road and is followed by tea and cake.

If you have lost a loved one and would value the opportunity to share in this moving experience you would be most welcome to attend. Please contact Kate Slater at Tyndallwoods on 0121 693 2222 for more details.  www.tyndallwoods.co.uk  facebook.com/tyndallwoodssolicitors  @Tyndallwoods

Flower Power There are some persistent thoughts, feelings and character traits that due to their stubborn nature can begin to take over our lives. While you probably already have your own general methods of working around these obstacles that life throws at you, Bach Flower Remedies are precise targeted methods of resolving these issues, using the power of the flower. Could this be any more ‘Moseley’? Probably not. The brilliant individual who discovered these remedies was in fact from right here in Moseley, Dr Edward Bach. He was a British physician, homeopath, bacteriologist and spiritual writer. Bach discovered 38 Bach Remedies altogether in the 1920s and ‘30s, covering a wide range of incredibly specific problems. Some hit home with such clarity and others you can have a good giggle about slipping some into your boss’ coffee. So here is some food for thought, could you imagine your life, and the lives of those around you if they were able to resolve some of the following issues?

• Holly: Anger, jealousy, suspicion. • Lark: Lack of confidence. • Rock Rose: Extreme fear, nightmares. • Vine: Dominating need for control over others. • Willow: Resentment, bitterness. Intrigued as to how flowers can have an affect on such specific issues? The intention of the remedies are to re-balance our emotions that have taken a fairly major detour from the healthy norm, and the method is to harness the healing powers of nature to do so.

• Cherry Plum: Fear of losing control.

Some of you may have your doubts (sounds like somebody needs some ‘Beech’!), but all forms of scientifically backed medicines started somewhere, and our discovery of all of nature’s capabilities is far from complete. Perhaps it’s time you invested some trust in the healing powers of nature, and give it a chance to unburden you a little.

• Chestnut Bud: Inability to learn one’s lesson.

by Ruby Watson

On the left are the Bach Flower Remedy solutions and on the right are the problems. • Agrimony: Smiles hide inner worry. • Beech: Over critical, intolerant.

• Elm: Overwhelmed by responsibility. • Heather: Overly Talkative.

A Floral Bouquet Present your sweetheart with a bunch of fascinating facts about our favourite Valentine’s Day flowers. 1. Tale as old as time… The oldest fossilised remains of a rose were found in Florissant, Colorado and have been estimated to date from 35 million years ago.

than twenty miles from Birmingham city centre. The award winning Rose Labyrinth at Coughton Court in Warwickshire contains over 200 varieties. (www.coughtoncourt.co.uk)

2. Ancient associations Roses have been associated with romance for thousands of years since being linked to Aphrodite and Venus, the goddesses of love in ancient Greece and Rome.

7. Perfume It takes approximately 60,000 roses to produce one ounce of the rose oil used in perfumes. Bulgaria produces around 70% of all rose oil in the world.

3. Growing old The oldest living rose bush grows up the wall of the Cathedral of Hildesheim in Germany and is believed to be up to 1000 years old.

8. Hips Rose hips, the fruit of the rose, are one of the richest plant sources of Vitamin C. The fine hairs inside the hip are used to make itching powder.

4. National symbol The rose was adopted as the national flower of England by new Tudor King Henry VII in the 15th century. He combined the red rose of Lancaster with the white rose of York to symbolise the country’s unity after the Wars of the Roses.

9. One small step… In 2002, a miniature rose called ‘Overnight Scentsation’ was sent into space so that scientists could study the effects of low gravity on its smell.

5. A thorny issue Technically, roses don’t have thorns, they have prickles. Thorns have deeper roots in a plant’s stem, but prickles attach at the surface and are more easily removed. 6. Rose gardens One of the UK’s best rose gardens is less

20. The price of love The most expensive rose in the world is the Juliet Rose, which was launched at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2006. Breeder David Austin spent 15 years and over £3 million developing it, but you can pick up a bouquet for your loved one this Valentine’s Day for around £90.

Burning Up It’s a horrible day. Freezing rain is lashing the windows, but you’re cosy indoors, wrapped in your onesie and warming your toes on a wood burning stove. Bliss. “More and more people are getting log burners these days,” says Geoff Waldron from Able Chimney Sweep in Moseley. “It used to be the odd one or two, but now it’s half my work.” Local heating expert Steven R Barnes agrees. “We’re taking out a lot of gas fires to put in solid fuel. Everyone likes the warm glow of a real fire.” Wood burners are more fuel efficient than both open fires and gas fires and can help reduce household heating bills. They can even be fitted in modern houses which have never had a chimney. With the doors closed, you can leave them burning unsupervised without the risk of a stray spark setting light to the carpet. But introducing naked flames into your home is a serious business and there are a number of important things to consider. Firstly, talk to a professional, such as MD Services on Vicarage Road in Kings Heath, about which size and type of stove would be suitable, and make sure that your installer is registered with HETAS. “All new stoves installations must be certified with HETAS by your engineer,” explains Steven from Steven R Barnes & Son. “Otherwise you will have to apply for certification from the Council, incurring extra costs.”

You will also need to call in a sweep to check the chimney and perform a smoke test to make sure nothing nasty will escape into the house. “In older houses, heat destroys the mortar between the bricks,” explains Geoff. “The smoke can leak through into upstairs rooms or the loft.” You’ll need to continue having your chimney swept at least once a year to prevent a dangerous build up of soot. Again, making sure your sweep is registered is a must. Do all that, and you can relax knowing that your stove is safe and your family secure. It’s time to crack open the cocoa, slip on your slippers and relax in front of a deliciously cosy real fire. by Alexandra Taylor

New name for Moseley Rugby Club Moseley Rugby Club will start the 2016/17 season as ‘Birmingham Moseley’, the new name coming into effect on 1st June 2016. This ends an extensive consultation within the club and with all parties with an interest including the governing body (The Rugby Football Union) the constituent body (North Midlands RFU), other clubs in and around Birmingham, sponsors and supporters including Birmingham City Council. Dave Warren, Chairman, said: “A great deal of thought has been put into this decision. This has taken into account that this is a club name that has been part of the history of Rugby Union since 1873. However the board felt that the name change will assist significantly in identifying the location of the club to the wider

public – particularly to those who are not aware of the club’s proud history.”

Highbury Trust takes shape Les Sparks is to be the first chair of the proposed new Trust for Highbury Hall and estate, the former Kings Heath home of Joseph Chamberlain, built in 1878. Chair of the Birmingham City Council’s Trusts & Charities Committee, Cllr Philip Davis said: “The creation of the new independent trust will fulfil a Council promise to better safeguard the historic assets given to the people of Birmingham in the 1930s.”

“I am confident that this famous estate can become one of the region’s most important centres of culture and learning, and truly worthy of Chamberlain’s generous bequest to the city of Birmingham.”

The Council will endow the Trust with almost £1 million from the lease of nearby Chamberlain House Uffculme School, plus rent from Civic Catering’s use of Highbury Hall. The Trust is expected to use this money to support major grant applications for the full restoration of the site. Welcoming his new role, Mr Sparks commented:

Raise Your Glass! As the winter continues to drag on, what better time to warm your cockles down the local pub and celebrate the entertainment they’ve been providing in our neighbourhoods for hundreds of years. It was the Romans who first brought taverns to the UK, but the real boom came after the introduction of gin in the 17th century. Now there are around 48,000 pubs across the country, 73 of those within a 5 mile radius of Birmingham city centre. A time traveller going back to experience a 17th century alehouse would perhaps be surprised at how little has changed. Just like the bands that you can enjoy today (Hare and Hounds and The Station in Kings Heath, Patrick Kavanagh and The Prince of Wales in Moseley), live music has always gone hand in hand with the drinks on offer. Many premises also included a card room or a billiard room, and by the end of the 18th century, saloons or lounges were another common feature. This was a room where, for an admission fee or higher drinks prices, singing, dancing, drama or comedy (much like that on offer at The Dark Horse in Moseley) was performed and orders would be served at the table.

these days, you might also find a pile of board games (Fletchers in Kings Heath, The Village in Moseley) or a shelf of books (Loco Lounge in Kings Heath) to help you while away your time. Even seemingly modern innovations such as karaoke (The Goose in Kings Heath) and DJs (One Trick Pony Club in Moseley) have their roots in the singalongs of the past. Some things have changed however. Modern pubs and bars prefer large, clear windows to the ornate smoked or stained glass of Victorian buildings like The Fighting Cocks in Moseley. Gone are the days where genteel ladies, police officers or the parish priest wanted to hide their drinking from the judgemental eyes of the general public. Next time you’re enjoying a shame-free night in your local, raise a grateful toast to the Romans for introducing pub culture to the UK.

3 Great ways to re-discover your garden after winter The long cold nights have taken their toll, and having little chance to get out there to do the much needed primping and preening has left your garden looking tired and hopeful of some serious TLC. Well it’s finally nearing that time when new life will be creeping back, so here are some tips to get you ready for your garden’s spring awakening. 1. It’s not too late to loose dead weight Deciduous trees such as Maples and Gum Trees should be pruned in winter, but be careful with larger trees this is the work for professionals. Oakwood Tree Care and Betel Gardens & Treeworks are specialists in removal of dead or dangerous trees, and a quick consultation with them can help you make important decisions about the future of your garden. 2. From mulch to magnificence When you’re trying to coax life back into a mulchy heap it can help to incorporate some things that don’t require seasonal support to thrive. Ornaments can give your garden some serious personality and remind you why you paid that much extra on your property to have your own patch of paradise. Garden mirrors give the illusion of added space, and have a uniquely enchanting quality to them; even the

smallest garden can be transformed with a strategically positioned attractive mirror. If you need some inspiration (and supplies) we advise a trip to Kitchen Garden Cafe’s treasure trove of garden wonders, on York road, Kings Heath. 3. Trimming up the topiary to make it extraordinary This is a long term commitment, a way for the dedicated garden enthusiast to bring regal grandeur and a bit of fun to his or her garden rarely seen outside of National Trust grounds. If you’re looking for new ways to flatter your home and show up the neighbourhood, this mighty challenge is a must. Happy gardening!
