Shirts 'n Shoes If you are a busy person, and let’s face it that means nearly everyone, then what do you want in a garment alteration, ironing or shoe repair service? Collection and delivery might help. Moseley Village has long been crying out for more traditional, useful high street stores and the good news is that you can now have your garments and shoes mended at the same place as your ironing or dry-cleaning - and yes, they collect and deliver. Arden Ironing on Woodbridge Road took over the ironing business at number 34 in September last year and, boy, have they been busy since then. They have invested a great deal in state of the art machinery to make their ironing, alteration and drycleaning services second to none. And as a sister business to Arden Orthotics in Highgate they have introduced shoe mending with the added benefits of providing expertise in specialist shoe alterations. Mariya Bezhena said: “We don’t just offer shoe repairs, we also can provide shoe enhancement. If you have any problems with your feet we can help you by drawing on our 25 years experience providing made to measure orthopaedic footwear. “We have connections with medical practitioners to have your feet examined and we can provide insoles, new shoes specially

manufactured or shoe modifications.” Arden Ironing provides an all round service including ironing of course, plus dry cleaning, service washing, clothing alterations and repairs, shoe repairs and enhancements. They are also planning to introduce a key cutting service later in the year. You can drop your ironing and dry-cleaning off as you go by, but they also provide a collection and delivery service which is ideal if you are pushed for time. Mariya added, “Our services are perfect for busy professionals who need an efficient way of managing their alterations and ironing and would value a reliable simple system for shoe repairs.”

Flamin' June Hiya kids, Flamin’ June! as my mother used to say when our next door neighbour June used to have a bonfire when she’d got her bedding on the line. I hope you are able to get away for a bit of a holiday. It’s hard to justify the time sometimes, isn’t it? Especially with all these zero hours contracts - you don’t know if the job will still be waiting for you when you get back. One thing however you do know will be there when you get back is a load of washing. There is a lot to be said for The Day Out. Warwick Castle - Stratford on Avon - Ikea. My husband Ken will never give me a lift to Ikea (he says it’s all a bit too Swedish for him), so if I want to go I have to go on the bus. I don’t drive - I am ergonomically correct. If you want to go by bus you get the number 75 to West Brom, then it’s the number 79 the rest of the way. It’s not so bad going but it’s tricky coming back if you’ve bought bunk beds, so think on. Another nice thing to do early summer, of course, is walking round the posh Kings Heath and

Moseley gardens when they have them open days and you can have a good nosey and maybe a cup of tea and a scone. It doesn’t seem a year since this time of year last year - it’s the circle of life! Enjoy yourselves this summer time whatever you are doing and try not to worry too much - as queen Elsa says in the Walt Disney film frozen - “let it go!”

Your Pal, Barbara Nice x You can see Mrs Barbara Nice at the Edinburgh Festival with her show Squirrel Proof at The Assembly Rooms. For details to to www.edfringe.com Mrs Barbara Nice also comperes The Laughing Sole, a children’s comedy show at the mac. The next show is 29 June. For details go to www.macbirmingham.co.uk

Happy Birthday Moseley Festival This year Moseley Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary with a bang. One of the West Midlands’ longestrunning community festivals, this year’s Moseley Festival takes place between Friday 4th and Sunday 13th July 2014. The festival typically sees thousands of residents and visitors flock to the Birmingham suburb, and it is hoped that this will be the biggest yet. The festival is perhaps best known for the annual street fair, which this year is happening on Saturday 5th July, and features scores of stalls with arts and crafts, hot and cold food, as well as charities and community groups from Birmingham and around the West Midlands. The street fair day also gives non-residents the opportunity to explore the beautiful Moseley Park and Pool. Other highlights over the 10-day programme include live music in the pubs and bars of the village, live comedy and dance performances as well as arts and cultural events. For those foodies amongst you, local cafés and restaurants will also be putting on a variety of tempting offers.

Got Talent competition in the Prince of Wales pub, Morris Dancing on the village green, joining in a singalong with local ukulele collective Moselele, or having taster sessions in a variety of activities from football to Buddhist meditation. Pam Rutter, Festival Coordinator and Moseley resident, said: “I’m really excited about the line-up for this year’s Moseley festival, which I think offers something for everyone. “The 40th anniversary is a real milestone, and we hope this year’s festival will be the biggest yet. “The festival is led by residents and local businesses, and showcases the great community spirit in Moseley Village. “With the Mostly Jazz, Soul and Funk Festival also falling within the 10 days of Moseley Festival this year, we have a great opportunity for people from across the country to discover our suburb.”

There’s even the chance for people to have a go themselves, by entering the annual Moseley’s

Our favourite family sports day Moseley family, the Lights, talk of their favourite family sporting events. We have lived and worked in South Birmingham all our lives. As teachers we are acutely aware of the need to engage our three children in extracurricular activities, be they cultural, recreational or sporting. We have always enjoyed family trips to watch athletics – everything from the Indoor Grand Prix at the National Indoor Arena to the Olympics – but our favourite has always been the British Championships, staged in Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium. We get to watch the best athletes in the country battling it out to be crowned British Champion (and usually to secure selection to the GB team for that summer’s major international athletics championships) meaning that every race is fiercely competitive. The atmosphere created at the Alexander Stadium is part serious athletics, part carnival, with plenty

for kids of all ages to do in-between athletics watching. In recent years, we’ve been lucky enough to see the likes of Mo Farah, Jessica EnnisHill, Greg Rutherford and Christine Ohuruogu competing, and even got to meet them after their races as the athletes mingle with the fans in the spectators’ village. Athletes are real role models for our youngsters and are always willing to make time for an autograph or a “selfie” with their fans. Both Saturday and Sunday offer a really full day out for all the family, even if you aren’t committed athletics fans. We’ve introduced many families to the event over the years who had never been to athletics before, and most have returned year on year. Why not make 2014 the year your family discovers the unique joy of a day at the British Athletics Championships – neither you nor your kids will regret it.

Free milk for a week A local Birmingham dairy is offering all new customers a week of free milk. This could mean you. And the catch is… you will be taking part in the growing revival of a decades old tradition and supporting the environmentally friendly buylocal ethos that is taking the country by storm.

service. Moo Fresh staff are trying to keep this traditional service alive by supplying the freshest most wholesome milk to customers’ doors in eco-friendly, returnable glass bottles.

For over a hundred years the great British milkman has been delivering fresh milk to our doors, but the decline of this great institution over the last thirty years due to changes in consumers purchasing habits along with the rise of twentyfour hour cut price supermarkets has made it very difficult for many dairies to survive and has had a knock on effect for British farmers.

The 21st century milkman offers the same great service but there is no more waiting in to pay your milkman, or sticking notes in the empty bottles. You can now order and pay your bill online. To order your free week of milk go to www.moofresh.co.uk or call 0121 647 3537

Pop up art exhibition An art exhibition celebrating local talent was held in May to raise money for All Saints Youth Project In Kings Heath. This event marks the beginning of a year of fundraising by the salon in its bid to give something back to the local community after 30 successful years trading on the high street. Salon owner, Tina Bartlam, said: “We want to put something back into the community that has been so good to us over the years. We have been endlessly inspired by our multi-talented clientele, and so to celebrate our anniversary we are inviting these clients to join us in running various events throughout the year.” Coustis hair salon became an art gallery for two days with local artists’ work on display. The exhibition brought together a range of visual art including watercolours, oils, an installation, sculpture, ceramics, film, photography and textiles.

tax relief

Are you entitled to

225% tax relief? Would you like to see tax as an inflow rather than an outflow of

money from your business?

Two common misconceptions relating to research and development:

x

We don’t do r&d

The definition is much wider than many people think, it is possible that what you might consider as ‘just doing our job’ may qualify for r&d tax relief

x

My company is too small to claim

We have completed a claim for a company turning over £1/2m In another recent claim completed by Bloomer Heaven they identified c£192k of qualifying expenditure and brought the client c£21k of tax relief Representing the most generous tax relief available to small and medium sized companies at 225% has your accountant spoken to you about research and development?

Gardens open in Moseley Moseley just can’t get enough of gardens. This year there will be open gardens on three consecutive weekends in June. On Sundays 15 and 22 June a total of ten gardens will be open under the National Gardens (Yellow Book) Scheme. Gardens at ‘Moseley Corner’ on St Agnes Road and Yardley Wood Road have a wide range of horticultural and artistic features, each garden demonstrating a unique design expressing the owners’ creative vision. Some of the gardens in ‘Moseley Gardens South’ have been seen before but will inevitably have grown and changed and with additional gardens on the route this year, visitors will see a variety of urban plots from small city gardens to a half-acre of spreading lawns with mature trees. On the final weekend, 28 - 29 June, Moseley in Bloom will again run its popular community event when around twenty gardens, allotments and parks will be open.

34

This is a big fundraiser for Moseley in Bloom and money goes to pay for the floral displays in Moseley Village that have contributed to the awarding of Gold to Moseley six times already. The gardens will also host refreshments, music, plant sales and children’s activities. On 28 June, visitors can combine gardens with a visit to Moseley Farmers’ Market. Carol Miller, Chair of Moseley in Bloom, said: “June will certainly be a busy month for Moseley. Come and see.”

Chef Richard Turner lives in Moseley and runs his Michelin Star restaurant, Turners, in Harborne

Respecting the food Deep respect of the raw ingredient sourced from the finest suppliers, and an on-going homage to the changing seasons, Richard Turner’s fresh flavoured dishes are based on simple classics, but with creative twists that have contributed to his string of accolades including his Michelin Star awarded yearly since 2009. With arrival of summer the production of British lamb is at full speed and in my opinion at its best. Whilst Spring lamb is good, the extra couple of months on fresh grass gives it a better depth of flavour and fat covering which enhances the eating of this great British animal.

tin foil ready to cook. Start the barbecue with lots of coals on a Sunday morning and once the flames have died down put the shoulder into the embers, put the lid down and leave all day while you read the papers, watch the cricket, or in my case wash the car and mow the lawns!

All the choice cuts of lamb can be cooked “a la minute” on the barbecue or in the kitchen pan fried nice and rare. But how about trying something a little different?

A good eight hours is recommended and when ready to eat, remove the lamb from the coals, unwrap and you will have a beautiful cooked piece of meat which will just melt in your mouth. Serve with another British classic at its prime, steamed Jersey royals and the last of the season’s asparagus.

In older times farmers used to slow cook the tougher cuts in fires in the ground. They would put the lamb in and cover, go off to work and come back after a long day in the fields and dig up the lamb which had slowly cooked in the embers of the fire. I am not suggesting you dig up the back lawn and start a fire. But how about buying a nice shoulder of lamb boned and rolled from your local butcher? We buy ours from Roger Browns in Harbourne. Season with whatever you choose, rosemary and garlic or cumin and yoghurt for example, roll in

Enjoy and happy cooking. Richard Turner www.turnersrestaurantbirmingham.co.uk Turners Restaurant, 69 High Street Harborne, B17 9NS T: 0121 426 4440 Twitter: @TurnersRestBrum facebook: TurnersRestaurantBirmingham

Art and culture haven at The Ort When one of Balsall Heath’s largest and oldest firms, Butcher’s Print Works, relocated to Redditch it was seen as a bitter blow to the area. For in its wake it left behind a vast empty shell, opposite Moseley Road Swimming Baths and next to the old Moseley School of Art. But an enterprising group of locals have found a brilliant new use for this beautiful early Art Nouveau building and turned it into a hive of artistic and cultural activity. And the jewel in the crown of The Old Print Works, as it’s now known, is undoubtedly The Ort Café, which brilliantly welcomes interested visitors into this fascinating building for a cup of herbal tea, some delicious vegan sausages, or even a glass of Mad Goose beer. In its short life since opening in 2011, The Ort Café, has effortlessly established itself as a location that totally encapsulates the wild artistic creativity of the spirit of Moseley and the Heaths - Balsall and Kings. The Ort is the brain child – quite literally - of two enterprising Masters of Philosophy – Josie and Riddhi who met at Birmingham University and heard that the charity who run the Old

36

Print Works were looking for a partner to help welcome people into the building. How better than with this hidden gem of a café, which doubles as an extremely eclectic venue, hosting high quality live music, like the hipster folk label Nocturne’s pick of alt-folk artists night as well as regular spoken word events. The café is also a highly sought-after exhibition space for local artists. A must-visit for everyone who still appreciates the funky spirit of this corner of Birmingham, The Ort Café is the perfect bohemian hang-out for today’s would-be Van Goghs and culture vultures – though of course Josie and Riddhi are keen to point out that everyone’s welcome. Your New Independent Children's Shoe Shop Local parents Anna and Mick Swift are the newest members of the growing independent retail scene in Kings Heath, after opening Cooshoo, a specialist children’s shoe shop on York Road. Anna, who manages Cooshoo, said; “As parents of two children we were frustrated by the lack of choice locally. So we’ve spent three years learning about the industry and sourcing quality manufacturers to bring cool, colourful and wellmade children’s shoes to Birmingham.” There is something for everyone - from first steps to school shoes for teenagers, funky boys shoes, sandals or boots and whether you want to buy everyday shoes at a reasonable price or something special.

Knowing how stressful it can be shopping with small children, Anna and Mick designed the shop to be an enjoyable environment. It is full of fun and colour with a dedicated play area to keep little ones and big ones happy. How much sugar is hiding in your food? Dr Parmar, a local family dentist, offers some friendly advice on keeping your teeth strong and healthy. Avoiding sugar in our diet is a sensible health choice. The difficulty comes when avoiding hidden sugars (the sugars we’re unaware of), largely because of misleading labelling. As part of a healthy, balanced diet a small amount of sugar will do the majority of us no harm. Be aware that sugar-free can mean chemically-laden, often more harmful than sugar. As a general rule, 10g of sugar per 100g is a lot, 2g per 100g is a little, and the top of ingredients list indicates the highest quantity.

Here are some of the highest sugary foods (along with a few helpful alternatives) – Frosties » Weetabix or Rice Krispies KitKat » Dry, frozen or fresh fruit Special K/Bran Flakes » Porridge, buttered toast Rusks » Breadsticks, oatcakes Our love of sugary food is learnt, and by being aware of how highly addictive sugar is we can avoid the perils of dental decay, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease and stroke. Calling all Moseley and Kings Heath primary schools With the weather getting sunnier as we make the welcome move into summer what better time to launch Friends of the Earth’s new campaign “Schools Run on Sun.” The campaign has a simple premise – “Every school that wants solar, should have it” – and an ambitious aim – to head toward clean energy in every street and every town across the UK. More clean energy is urgently needed to help tackle climate change, and schools are a great place to start as they are at the heart of so many communities. They also have big roofs that can create lots of lovely solar energy, saving the average school up to £8,000 on energy bills. It is a burning ambition of Friends of the Earth to enable our children to grow up in a world where renewable energy is completely normal, and this Run on Sun campaign aims to do just that. Friends of the Earth will be working for as many primary schools to have solar as possible, by making the case to schools themselves, as well as lobbying local and national politicians to do more to help schools go solar. However just because the campaign is focussing on primary schools, doesn’t mean that getting solar panels on homes and other community buildings isn’t important. Any individual or community group is encouraged to look at solar energy.

38

There are inspirational examples in the area, for example the Community Energy Project in Moseley in 2011 which saw the installation of solar panels on several community buildings including Hamza Mosque, Moseley C of E School and St Mary’s Church, as well as 20 homes. The solar panels on St Mary’s Church alone generated total energy of 7,700kWh and saved of 4.4 tonnes of CO2 in the first year, reducing energy costs by 30% and generating £3,000 from the feed-in-tariff. Julien Pritchard of Friends of the Earth said: “If you’re a teacher or governor at a Primary School who’s inspired by this, and are interested in having solar panels on your school, then why not get in touch?

We'd love to hear from you. You can email us at: campaigns@birminghamfoe.org.uk

Give domestic abusers the red card Football fever is gripping the nation this month with the 2014 World Cup starting in Brazil on 12 June. No-one can predict how the England team will fare, but unfortunately what is known is that the police often see a rise in alcoholrelated violence, disorder and anti-social behaviour during large-scale sporting events. While police operations are underway to target known trouble-makers attempting to travel abroad for matches and also tackle crime fuelled by alcohol on home turf, equally serious crimes will be taking place behind closed doors and frequently going unreported. Domestic abuse affects 1.2 million women and 700,000 men nationally and the abuse can be physical, psychological, sexual, financial or emotional. It can involve any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse. There is no typical victim, abuser or type of relationship where domestic abuse takes place, and a victim is typically abused an average of 35 times before police are alerted.

to known offenders to monitor their behaviour – but only if they are aware of the abuse. Whether you’re a victim, know someone is suffering or you are an abuser seeking help, you can talk to someone who can help today. If you can’t talk to police on 101, there are national agencies and local organisations that provide excellent support. From a friendly ear, to counselling, housing applications and emergency injunctions – these groups are invaluable in taking the first step on the road to a safer, happier future. In an emergency, always dial 999. Visit www.west-midlands.police.uk and go to the Advice Centre > Help and Advice > Domestic Abuse for further information on types of abuse and contact details for organisations who can help. Also available in this section is guidance on how to request information from police about a partner’s history of violent behaviour under the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme.

Specially trained domestic abuse officers investigate reports, support victims and pay regular visits

New home bliss for the vintage fair Moseley Retro and Vintage Fair moved to Moseley All Services Club a few months ago and the change has been an resounding success. “The fair now accommodates around thirty stallholders each selling vintage treasures from jewellery, furniture, artwork and other curios. But it doesn’t stop there... during the summer months we will be opening up the gardens to more stalls and even some live music. “We are also pleased to announce that we have taken on space at The Vintage Barn, Henley Road, Ullenhall and will be up and running for business in June.” Organiser Graziella Divito said: “Well, what a start. We have had two events at our new home and been overwhelmed by the numbers coming through the door and the positive feedback from stallholders and visitors alike. The biggest thumbs up is for the licensed bar.

The Over-50's Club The Over 50’s Club has been meeting at St Agnes Church Hall for 15 years and continues to attract new members thanks to the atmosphere of warmth and sincere companionship. New members are always welcome. The Club provides a regular social meeting for all people in the local community who are over 50 years old. They meet on alternate Thursday afternoons and have a wide spectrum of interesting speakers; illustrated talks on topics ranging from climbing K2 to bee-keeping; visits from professionals addressing the issues of older people; games and craft afternoons. Over a cup of tea and biscuits members have time to chat and forge new friendships in a convivial atmosphere. The group organises two or three outings each year for lunch, to visit gardens, museums and other places of interest.

Because of the generous support of charitable trusts, notably The Lord Austin Trust and the George Fentham Trust, the Over 50’s Club manages to run day to day activities by charging only a modest entrance fee. Special events and outings are also reasonably priced.

Planning for the inevitable In our latest ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ series we say hello to Ian Buchanan, Director who specialises in Wills, Trusts and Powers of Attorney and also residential conveyancing. Tyndallwoods footer for useIan Buchanan, Director, TEP This combination serves Ian’s clients well because if he helps someone to buy a house and the subject of Wills is raised he can handle both matters. Similarly when people are going through Wills, Trusts and Powers of Attorney procedures there may be property sales and purchases to consider and it is comforting to clients to be able to deal with the same solicitor rather than talk to a new person at this often-emotional time. Ian joined Tyndallwoods in April 2009 and within an impressively short time he has completed his STEP qualifications and was made a director of the firm last year. Ian’s clients are mostly locally based people, and often they are the second or third generation to have used Tyndallwoods. The family oriented, genuinely friendly and charitable ethos of the firm perfectly lends itself to the private client services that they specialise in.

29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site

Ian has three pieces of advice to offer people reading this: 1. Timing is critical when planning your Will, do not leave it until it is too late. 2. It is best to seek professional and regulated advice from a solicitor, this will save you money in the long run. 3. Consider putting in place a Power of Attorney before it is required. Often people come to us to seek advice after their relative has begun to lose capacity. This can often be too late and can lead to additional fees and a delay of eight to ten months to go through the Court of Protection process.

For more information or to make an appointment you can call Ian on 0121 693 2222.

What a difference £1 makes People often think nothing of spending over £2 on a small latte, so what difference can just £1 per week really make to our local charities? Carl Bayliss has managed TLC Lottery for nearly 4 years and in this time has seen how giving a small amount helps thousands of local people each year. “The money raised through the ongoing support of TLC Lottery players is the equivalent of funding 3 specialist children’s hospice nurses, 65 adult patients receiving Hospice at Home care and 2,000 blind disabled people visited at home,” explains Carl. “Although our lottery’s weekly top prize of £1,000 is not life-changing compared to the huge National Lottery prizes, the

money raised by our supporters makes a real difference to so many Birmingham people.” TLC is a joint fundraising venture of Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and Focus Birmingham. It costs just £1 per week to play and you can join online at: www.tlclottery.co.uk or telephone 01564 825047

Hidden gem of Brummie music history Highbury Studio is arguably one of the coolest places in Birmingham. An amazing time-capsule of hidden musical history, Highbury Studio is to this day a thriving recording facility: one of the oldest and best analogue studios in the country. It was built in the shell of the old Quaife and Lilley cricket-bat factory, on Highbury Road, which Highbury’s creator – Bob Lamb, the drummer with the iconic Brummie Steve Gibbons Band – chose to move to in the early eighties when he outgrew the studio in his basement on Cambridge Road. Some of the beautifully preserved and maintained historic equipment in the studio was used by Bob to record local legend UB40’s first seminal album ‘Signing Off.’ Bob also helped to design Duran Duran’s early sound here – a fact which their bass player, John Taylor, gratefully acknowledges in his recent biography. John Mostyn, who now runs Highbury Studio is himself a local legend and a piece of living musical history who started his career in the early seventies promoting gigs upstairs at The Fighting Cocks. John went on to be agent for The Specials and Selecter and then managed Birmingham’s

brilliant mash up of punk and ska, The Beat, and world chart dominating Fine Young Cannibals throughout their careers. These days, John and Rob Peters, the wizard engineer who knows all the secrets of Highbury’s venerable equipment, are passionately committed to ensuring that Highbury Studio is as vibrant and welcoming as it’s ever been to talented artists and anyone who appreciates the nuanced warmth of the superb analogue sound of this historic and special recording studio. “Highbury’s got a great sound and is fantastic at capturing the excitement and immediacy of live performance” says John. “That’s why brilliant local bands like Alternative Dubstep Orchestra, Goodnight Lenin and many others love us and keep coming back. Highbury’s doors however are open to everyone with a recording project that would benefit from our organic analogue sound.” Max Carlish www.Highburystudio.com 07772 293325
