Jasper takes a stroll through Moseley
Jasper - son of the midlands Jasper Carrott OBE is a son of the Midlands, loved and exalted. One of Great Britain’s best known comedians, he grew up here in Acocks Green, married his wife Hazel from Olton at Solihull Registry Office and had his wedding reception in Moseley Village. He is about to go out on a nationwide tour for the first time in sixteen years with his Stand up and Rock show alongside The Bev Bevan Band and Trevor Burton. With over fifty gigs planned across the UK he has four dates at Solihull Arts Complex which are already sold out. But don’t worry you can still get tickets for his appearance at Birmingham Town Hall on 21 October. More details of his tour dates can be found online at www.jaspercarrott.com/live. His extraordinary career has been packed with achievement and success. Did you know, he has written three successful books, had a top 5 chart hit with Funky Moped, and been inducted into the Birmingham Walk of Fame, an honour he shares with Ozzie Osbourne? Jasper received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 from the British Comedy Awards, performed in the original legendary Secret Policeman’s Ball charity concert for Amnesty International
and has raised millions for charitable causes for which he was honoured with an OBE. He is Patron of the stunning new Birmingham Central Library, has been spotted running in the Knowle Fun Run and been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Birmingham. Jasper co-founded the production company Celador, best known for making the globally successful “Who Wants to be A Millionaire” and appeared in a whole slew of his own TV comedy shows. Oh - mustn’t forget… he’s also a dedicated Birmingham Blues fan. Unbelievably, there’s more but we haven’t the space! Jasper says, “it’s important to me that I provide a complete show that’s good value for money and leaves the audience looking forward to the next time. Working with Bev and Trevor means the pressure of performing is shared rather than solely on my shoulders and when we’ve worked together before it’s been really successful.”

Hiya Kids I hope you all had a great summer. Lovely weather in September wasn’t it when the kids went back to school. I was in Edinburgh for August doing my show ‘Squirrel Proof ’ and I found out some interesting methods of keeping squirrels from eating the bird food. A vicar from Carlisle told me how he wired up his bird table and electrocuted them. A very nice lady in her 70s from Fife told me she had shot loads of them! There are, of course, more humane deterrents. A fellah from Dundee gave me a good tip. According to him squirrels don’t like chile pepper but birds don’t mind it, so he said to sprinkle some over your peanuts. I suppose it would be like a peanut bhuna masalla for chaffinches. It’s surprising how strongly some people feel about Squirrels. A lot of people said they liked red squirrels but couldn’t be doing with grey ones. “These grey squirrels - coming over here - eating our nuts!”
At the end of the day all they are trying to do is feed their kids like everyone else! Happy autumn everyone - enjoy the changing season xxxxxxx

Glamorous lifestyle bathrooms Caroline Cooper, managing director of Roman Bathrooms and award winning designer, explains how to create a glamorous yet functional family bathroom. Today’s bathrooms are all about combining cutting edge technology with traditional glamour – digital shower controls alongside soft lighting and chandeliers, high tech and luxury blended together to create a timeless bathroom that’s individual and unique.
and the opulence typified by that era. Look out for sumptuous fabrics and chic standalone pieces that add an air of indulgence to your bathroom – vintage-style cabinets are a great way of maintaining practicality without compromising your aesthetic.
Bathrooms are becoming less about pure functionality, and more about lifestyle. This year we’ve seen a rise in requests for bathrooms optimised for the whole family – a roll top bath for mum, a walk in bath for Gran and all the latest gadgets for the man of the house. Increasingly, the bathroom is the designated space for relaxation and calm for every member of the household.
In terms of shades, colours from the pastel palette, or warmer cream tones create a softer look. There are some beautiful natural stone tiles to choose from that add texture and interest as well as colour. When you add underfloor heating, you create the ultimate chill-out zone and make your bathroom the perfect place to unwind.
Boutique hotel luxury is still a key inspiration for designers, together with a wider renaissance in enthusiasm for classic silver screen style

Holistic Therapeutic Massage – Rest, Relieve, Restore, Relax The therapeutic nature of massage has been recognised by man for thousands of years. We tell children to “rub it better” and will instinctively caress someone’s back when they need comforting. Samantha Roberts is a fully qualified Holistic Massage Therapist who works from a private treatment room in Moseley. She is passionate about the use of massage to support and complement the body’s own healing processes and says “the importance and value of positive, caring touch is often overlooked.” “The beauty of holistic massage,” she says, “is that the whole person is considered during the session. We consider physical aches and pains or a strained muscle, but we are also interested in the emotional, mental and spiritual well-being of the client.” Holistic massage combines a sound knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology with experience, intuition and intention to provide a unique massage, based on your needs that day. Those needs may include the desire for some time out from a hectic schedule; relief from the pain or discomfort of an injury; nurturing and cherishing during difficult times; maintenance and support for professional and amateur athletes, including pre and post event; or simply the need to have some relaxation. Samantha says, “a typical session with me includes an initial consultation to assess your needs that day,
why you would like massage and any medical issues which may need further discussion. This all helps me build a ‘picture’ of you. We then, together, work out a session plan of the massage you would like, which may include stillness, stretches, trigger point therapy, deep tissue work and other bodywork techniques. The massage itself generally lasts between thirty to forty-five minutes and we then spend a few minutes at the end discussing any changes you may be feeling and any aftercare suggestions to support your continued well-being.” Samantha offers daytime and evening appointments. Saturday appointments are sometimes available. Vouchers are available as a special gift for someone you love.

Think Christmas, Think Local They say it’s the thought that counts, and when it comes to festive gifts, what could be more thoughtful than a unique, locally made item to brighten up the home. Kings Heath and Moseley will be bursting with opportunities to pick up something special for your loved ones this winter. Things kick off with Highbury Hall’s Christmas Craft Fayre Weekend on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd November. With offerings including hand made jewellery, soaps, candles and much more, you’re sure to tick a few things off your Christmas list. There’ll also be mulled wine and mince pies on sale to help keep your energy levels up. If you don’t find everything you need there, the following weekend you’ll be spoilt for choice with both Moseley’s regular Farmers’ Market and Kings Heath’s craft market setting out their stalls on Saturday 29th November. Get up early to peruse both sites for a huge variety of locally made gifts including works of art, toys, ornaments, jewellery and clothes. There’ll also be an extra Farmer’s Market in Moseley on
20th December to make sure those perishable treats are still tasty once they’re unwrapped. And if that isn’t enough, the mac is also hosting two weekends of Christmas trade. Local designers and makers will be filling two floors of the art centre, offering an exclusive selection of ceramics, jewellery, paintings and craft items on December 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th. But if you’re still having trouble finding the perfect gift for Uncle Trevor or your sister’s husband’s daughter’s fiancee, then take a walk down your local high street for inspiration. Who needs the stress of online shopping, with its unpredictable delivery times and items that arrive looking very different to how they did on screen? Every pound spent in the area helps support local jobs and keeps our community alive, so when it comes to Christmas shopping, think local and you can’t go far wrong. Alex Taylor

Christmas Entertainment From the spine-chilling to the spiritual, there’s a whole stocking full of festive entertainment on offer in Moseley and Kings Heath in the run up to Christmas this year. If you enjoy brightly coloured, action packed, family entertainment, then head along to the Mac from 1st to 13th of December for a brand new musical retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale. ‘Thumbelina’s Great Big Adventure’ features a gangster mole, singing fish, biker beetles, puppetry, clowning and live music, all topped off with a sprinkling of snow. Festive physical theatre for all the family. However, if you’re looking to escape the kids for an evening and fancy indulging in more adult pleasures, the Dirty Old Folkers are returning to the Kitchen Garden Cafe on 16th and 23rd of December with a rude and risque panto, followed by an equally bawdy Christmas singalong. Definitely not suitable for children. On 12th December Highbury Hall plays host to a splendidly spooky collection of Charles Dickens’s lesser known Christmas ghost stories. Victorian pawnbroker Gabriel Grubb and his long
suffering apprentice, Master Snodgrass, present an evening of vengeful skeletons, haunted railway lines and macabre frights for those who enjoy the supernatural side of the festive season. And if Christmas is about coming together as a community, then both Kings Heath (15th November) and Moseley (6th December) will be holding special events to mark the switching on of their Christmas lights. In addition, on 30th November there will be a day of fun activities in Kings Heath village square, including stalls and games and even Father Christmas himself. Starting at 2pm there will be food, drink, a special guest to switch on the village square lights, all culminating in a carol service at All Saints Church at 6pm. Alex Taylor For more information or to book tickets, contact the venues.

Social Media - what does it mean for magazines like this? Change is always scary, but it is necessary and inevitable. Heraclitus over 2,500 years ago already knew that when he said his famous quote: “Nothing is permanent, but change.” When the internet started to expand its reach, some ‘gurus’ years ago claimed that printed press was dying and they couldn’t be more wrong. The only thing that has changed is the way that we communicate with the media. Social media has changed the way we communicate and it is nothing but a great tool for community magazines like ours to build relationships and engage with the local community. 5 breath-taking facts about social media. • More people have access to a mobile phone than to a toothbrush • 1/3 of British teenagers are on Snapchat • The fastest growing demographic on Twitter is 55-64 year olds

Waters on the Square... Award-winning chef Andy Waters’s latest culinary enterprise Founder Andy Waters, famed for his Michelin Star awarded in 2003 for ‘Edmunds’ (in Henley in Arden), has now opened a second restaurant in Birmingham, Waters on the Square. Nestled in Chad Square opposite the White Swan is the relaxed bistro restaurant, Waters on the Square. Its elegant and classy interior is equalled in comfort and the decor is a mixture of vibrant luxurious reds with calm peaceful cream walls and tropical plants. What a treat for our team lunch! Served by Vratko the charming Slovakian waiter - we were in good hands. He certainly helped to calm the nerves brought on by our busy working schedules, as we did partially bring the office in with us… Oops! We began with wine (after midday, don’t judge us, okay?) going for a crisp Pino Grigio which went with our meals beautifully. Choosing from the very reasonably priced set lunchtime menu I began with the ‘warm salad of chicken with raspberry vinaigrette,’ a culinary combination I hadn’t even considered, which as it turns out, is a match made in heaven. The flavours complimented each other with such precision, needless to say
attention to detail is certainly something Waters on the Square can pride themselves on. For my main I chose the ‘slowly cooked belly of lamb, red cabbage, mint & caper juice.’ Another stunning dish, and exactly everything you could hope for in a traditional lamb and mash meal but transformed into something much more special. The slow cooked lamb belly was so tender it fell apart wonderfully at the touch, and was juicy and succulent to the taste. For dessert we each had the assiette, a miniature selection of five desserts. A beautiful array of colours and flavours, from the deeply indulgent chocolate gateaux to the light and summery raspberry smoothie, all in all a delightful end to the meal. This lunch menu changes weekly which makes for a unique experience with each visit and the venue can cater for up to 28 people for private dining, for all of those special occasions. He has also taken it upon himself to ensure that Tyndallwoods is a carbon neutral firm and provides a valuable sounding board for clients with complex business or family issues.
Where Steve is really making a difference within Tyndallwoods is with clients who have more complex issues to deal with. “We advise many people who own family businesses and any number of situations can occur, such as shareholder agreements, incorporation, selling a business, and personal issues like dealing with inheritance tax.
Starting his career as a corporate finance accountant, Steve has also spent time turning a small engineering company into an international engineering group, moving their operations to the Far East. His success meant that he was then able to choose a change in direction, investing in a biodiesel project in the Far East, helping subsistence farmers to be more self sufficient and more profitable. So, back to Tyndallwoods… how can the company be carbon neutral? Well it is relatively easy according to Steve. “We bought a three acre abandoned scrubland site in Thailand, planted 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site

But there are changes afoot that could result in more people unwittingly falling into the inheritance tax (IHT) paying bracket. With new pension reforms coming into force next year, people over the age of 55 will be able to gain full unrestricted access to their pension fund. It sounds fantastic, you could build an extension, help your children get onto the property ladder with a loan or just have the cash in your account for a rainy day, whatever you like. Before you get too excited, though, here some words of advice from Jay. “As soon as you access any of your pension fund in this way - you make the cash potentially liable to IHT. So you could risk losing up to 40% of the monies as well as the income tax you suffer when taking the lump sum out of the fund. This adds to the current situation which is seeing more and more people fall into the inheritance tax net. “ “The threshold is currently £325,000 for an individual or £650,000 for a couple which may seem a lot but when you take into consideration property values around here, then it is an easy figure to reach. Furthermore, if you decide to take significant lump sums from your pension fund that could push your estate into a position of paying IHT unnecessarily.
“If you are tempted to take advantage of this change in the pension rules then I would urge you not to rush into anything. Seek advice from an experienced professional before doing something you may later regret. With proper planning inheritance tax need not be a burden for your children to inherit.” For more information or to make an appointment you can call Jay on 0121 236 0465 Bloomer Heaven, Rutland House, 148 Edmund Street, Birmingham, B3 2FD www.bloomerheaven.co.uk

Everyone's a winner baby Did you know that you are seven times more likely to win the TLC Lottery than the National Lottery? It’s also half the cost, at just £1 per weekly entry. Or you could opt for the monthly subscription at just £4.34 - the cost of a cup of tea and a slice of cake. And there are even gift vouchers available, the perfect Christmas gift for those awkward friends and family members who have everything. With a weekly first prize of £1000, TLC Lottery may not pay out life-changing prizes but the funds it raises for local good causes help change the lives of thousands of people in our city every day of the week. They are the real winners. After the lottery’s 163 weekly cash prizes are paid out, all funds raised are shared equally between three local charity partners: Acorns Children’s Hospice and Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, who both provide care and support for families living with incurable illness, and Focus Birmingham, who provide support and advice for people affected by sight loss and other disabilities.
TLC currently provides the equivalent of funding three specialist children’s hospice nurses, 2000 home visits to blind disabled people and 65 adult hospice patients receiving home care. We all dream of winning a life changing amount on the lottery but the reality is that, for most of us, it will only ever be a dream. By putting your hard-earned money into TLC you can be sure you’re helping those most at need in your local community, helping alleviate suffering while you keep your fingers crossed. Sounds like a win-win situation to me. Visit tlclottery.co.uk to sign up online or download a leaflet, or telephone Lorraine on 01564 825047 for further details.
The funds raised are unrestricted, meaning the charities can spend their money as they wish.

Thomas Trotter, Town Hall's Organist
Preserving the Town Hall's impressive organ Our beautiful Town Hall is dominated by a magnificent organ which was specially commissioned for the opening of the building in 1844. Roll up, roll up! Once upon a time, a teenage boy ran away to join the circus. It sounds like the start of a fairy story, but that’s pretty much what happened to Joe Fearn. He landed a summer job in a circus aged eighteen and discovered a magical place where unique people come from all over the world to share their skills and become part of a strange and eclectic family. He lived the circus lifestyle for the next eleven years, attending circus school, travelling the globe and honing his skills. However, Joe never lost touch with his Birmingham roots and three years ago decided to return and put his talent to good use by establishing a circus community in his home city. From a few informal classes, CircusMASH quickly grew and expanded. Now run by him and his partner, it has brought circus skills to over eight thousand people, and is now involved in a huge range of activities, such as youth programmes, workshops, classes and school visits. They are also working with Solihull College to develop units on aerial skills for Performing Arts BTEC courses. CircusMASH is not a charity, but community involvement is at the heart of their work. Joe believes that charitable status would put too many restrictions on what they can offer,
36
and they are willing to forego the potential tax breaks in order to keep control of something they feel so passionate about. Their next big adventure is creating a centre where they can bring all their activities together in a purpose built setting. They’ve been fundraising since March through events, private donations, raffles and crowd funding to raise enough money to convert the remaining section of the old All Saints Centre in Kings Heath. Joe is optimistic that they’ll be inviting people to ‘Roll up, roll up!’ in early 2015. “We love what we do,” he explains, “Our ethos is to change mindsets and gear young people towards a positive future through circus arts.” Joe Fearn may have come back home, but he’s still very much the boy who ran away to join the circus. Cleaning Up the Community Helen and Oz, the Moseley and Kings Heath Neighbourhood Wardens have been in post for just six months but have already made a massive impact on the neighbourhood. “One of our biggest tasks has been organising and delivering community clean up days,” says Helen. “We’ve found it really encouraging that with each event more volunteers have come forward. At our Middleton Road Area Community Clean Up we had over twenty volunteers and all three Councillors giving us a hand”. In July, children from Park Hill Primary School collected several bags of rubbish on Trafalgar Road alone. Helen and Oz were really impressed by the enthusiasm of the children involved. “The Young Wardens project is something we want to bring to other schools in our area,” said Helen. “One of the best things about this job is the support we get from other agencies such as the police, the Councillors, and council departments - it is great to know that so many people are working hard to maintain and improve Moseley and Kings Heath.” Local Ward Councillor Martin Straker-Welds says “Helen and Oz have brought new vitality, vigour and pride to our communities. Their enthusiasm is infectious and the results speak for themselves.
“They manage their mission with a light touch and a positive approach. It’s really encouraging to see how creative they’ve been in bringing together the energy of local volunteers and the know-how of housing and environment services. That is why they have our full blessing and support.” And it doesn’t stop at tackling litter. The Wardens have worked in partnership with the Council’s graffiti removal ream to help identify graffiti hotspots, get graffiti removed and encourage local businesses to paint over graffiti as soon as possible. They’ve also been instrumental in the work of the Moseley Community Alcohol Partnership, helping to reduce antisocial behaviour from street drinkers and beggars. If you’d like to get involved in cleaning up your community, contact Helen and Oz by emailing: wardens@moseleycdt.com

Highbury Orchard Community In our modern world of convenience foods, fast cars and high speed internet it’s very easy to become disconnected from the living, breathing earth that sustains our existence. But Highbury Orchard Community are working hard to keep us firmly rooted. Their mission statement: connecting people and land while caring for both. One way they are doing this is with their Forest Education Project - a scheme that has involved over 500 people, encouraging kids to learn about and connect with nature through a whole host of fun games and activities. The project has cultivated relationshps with a number of local schools and kick started the creation of a children’s garden. It’s hoped that by next summer it’ll be ready for kids to come along and find worms, plant radishes and generally get their hands mucky. This is all in addition to maintaining and expanding the existing community orchard, a small patch of land tucked away in a corner of Highbury Park, that boasts apples, plums, pears, gooseberries, tayberries, raspberries and a growing herb collection. With only one acre of land to play with, the site is too small to be commercial, but
38
big enough to provide plenty of opportunities for local people to come along and learn new skills, make new friends and get some exercise. And this time of year is all about enjoying the fruits of that labour. The Highbury Harvest (Saturday 11th October, 12-5pm) is a collaboration between the Four Seasons Garden Project, Birmingham and District Beekeepers Association, Highbury Park Friends, Kings Heath Transition Initiative, Sustainable Moseley and Highbury Orchard Community. Not only can you bring along your own apples for pressing, but there will also be local honey for sale, a demonstration bee hive, a children’s trail and the chance to try the juice pressed from historic apple trees planted in the park by Joseph Chamberlain himself. Not a ready meal in sight. Alex Taylor To get involved or for more information, visit www.peopleandland.org.uk

Saddle-sore cyclists complete challenge for charity Tom Rowland from Kings Heath was just one of over 160 cyclists who got on their bikes in August in aid of Acorns Children’s Hospice. The charity held its sixth Severn Valley cycle challenge on Sunday 17th August in order to raise funds for its three hospices across the region. Tom, along with his two-year old son Joseph, was part of a team organised by Moseley Golf Club. “I wanted to take part last year but couldn’t,” he said, “It’s a really good cause and a great charity.” Cyclists chose one of three different courses to match their ability, all of which took in the stunning Severn Valley countryside before finishing in Bewdley. After the race, participants were taken back to their starting points on the Severn Valley Steam Railway. The 20 mile race was started by Claire and Brett Groom, from Kingswinford. Their daughter Isla was cared for by Acorns before she passed away two years ago from the rare genetic condition, Edwards’ Syndrome. Ian Carr, Acorns’ events manager, said: “We were really pleased with the number of people who came out to support Acorns Children’s Hospice, both the cyclists and the volunteers who helped on the day. They are all tough courses with some steep climbs so
everyone who completed any did fantastically well.” Acorns doesn’t charge families for making use of their services, regardless of the ever increasing costs involved. The charity relies heavily on sponsorship, public fundraising and voluntary donations from events such as the Severn Valley cycle challenge to provide the majority of the funding it needs to operate. It is hoped that the event will raise £30,000 and participants are being encouraged to send in their sponsorship money as soon as possible, to help Acorns continue to provide care for life limited and life threatened children across the region. If you’d like to help support the charity, then you can enter the Lantern Walk, taking place in Birmingham on Saturday 11th October, or the much more energetic 2014 Bupa Great Birmingham Run on Sunday 19th October.

Serving the Community Meet Collette Kelly. Collette oversees the family catering company that runs the Victorian Tea Rooms in Kings Heath Park as well as the Village Square Cafe in All Saints Centre just off Kings Heath High Street. “My mum started the business twenty one years ago,” explains Collette, “Now it’s mainly her, my father, my aunty and me with various other family members helping out when they can around work and university.” Collette grew up in the area and is passionate about bringing together local charities, artists, groups and businesses to create a vibrant neighbourhood, a passion which is carried through into the business’s strong community ethos. They use local produce where possible, sell hand baked cakes, always have something new on the menu and work with the College of Food to run a training programme for their staff. At the Victorian Tea Rooms they provide a place to meet and socialise for the dozens of different groups that use the park - fitness clubs, youth groups, older people, dog walkers, parents and kids. They also host birthdays and
40
craft workshops, including pottery with All Fired Arts and Christmas bauble making. At the cafe in the square they’ve supplied food to the daycare centre, the Ladies’ Lunch Club and also work with the church to provide people in financial need with free tea and coffee, as well as a warm, dry place to go during the day. Balancing this community approach with the need to sustain a profitable business is a constant struggle, but this doesn’t stop Collette having big plans for the future. Amongst other things, she’s hoping to set up a permanent Fair Trade shop within the cafe, to work more closely with the church to offer lowcost wedding catering and rent out the cafe’s kitchen for people to cater their own events. “It’s about bringing people together, creating a community. And really good cake too, of course!” Alex Taylor

Richard Turner (centre) visits the beer experts at Purity
Beer and food - the Perfect Serve Autumn is a time for game – and beer. Oktoberfest is the traditional culmination of the first pour of Europe’s finest ‘beers’ after they have lain fermenting for on average 40+ days underground. This process is known as ‘lagering,’ where cold storage of beer, in underground caves, was a common practice throughout the medieval period. Now-a-days it’s automated in large stainless steel vats and the processes speeded up. On a recent visit to Warwickshire’s Purity Brewery I got to taste some of the finest world beers – including some of their own brews. Surprisingly, some of the best beers are now coming out of the USA (Ignore Budweiser in that category). However, the dark beers are where I am at - 6% to 7% ABV, adding flavour, texture and a real kick. Matching these to food is the real challenge, and pleasure. Since my visit to Purity we have been experimenting in the Turners’ kitchen and have now not only matched the perfectly balanced ‘Purity Long Horn IPA’ to one of our dishes on our tasting menu, but have also incorporated a stunning zero alcohol beer from Germany with one of my desserts. It’s all about flavour notes and understanding the style of hops used. There is such a wide range of hops around the world and it
is all down to the nose and the palate of the head brewer that creates the individuality of the beer - a bit like a chef creating a perfectly balanced dish. Then, how they are applied to the brewing process with the yeast strain of the brewery influences the resulting nectar. But if you really seek the perfect serve of beer, then it should be stored and poured from a can – as we do now in the restaurant – as a can protects the liquid from the damaging UV sunlight. Don’t take my word for it, come down to Turners and let us know what you think – there are now nine beers on our world beer menu – some which may surprise you. Next Event: Taste of Autumn: 4 Courses including Purity Ale £75. Joined by Purity Ale food & drink specialists. Date: Thursday 16 October from 7pm. From mixing it with Harley Davidson motorcycles to burying members on the beach while singing at Christchurch Priory in July - all in the name of having a good time. And they have fun with their music too. A recent service featured singing with a professional jazz trio and they’re looking forward to leading a fun afternoon of singing for local youngsters on Saturday 4 October. They will sing the Armed Man Mass commemorating World War 1 on Remembrance Sunday, 9 November, and have a special concert for Saint Cecelia’s Day on 22 November. Then there’s Christmas….!

The bitter truth about sugar Dr Parmar, a local family dentist, offers some friendly advice on keeping your teeth strong and healthy. It is almost a fact of life that children love sweets (and hate vegetables)! and as adults, we don’t want to be seen as killjoys by depriving them of sweetie treats, yet nor do we want to intentionally give children something that causes so much damage.
• Avoid hard boiled or sticky sweets (they remain in the mouth for longer periods) • Confine fizzy drinks to weekends, although water is the best option (and it costs nothing!) • Encourage grandparents etc to give nonsweet related treats (a comic perhaps?) • Brush teeth twice a day, morning & night • Never have sweet things before going to bed As with all things in life, the key is moderation. Dr Manoj Parmar
These simple steps can help minimise the pain, distress and misery associated with the consumption of sugary snacks and drinks – • Limit to once a week and eat it as quickly as possible (or enjoy it as a special desert)

Halloween Pumpkin Flotilla If you prefer your Halloween more atmospheric than alarming, then head down to Sarehole Mill on 30 or 31 October for an evening with a difference. The idea is simple. Families bring along a carved pumpkin and put in a candle. Once lit, the lanterns are put on floats and sent bobbing off across the millpond, candlelight reflecting on the water in the gathering dusk beside the picturesque 18th century watermill. Add a carving competition, a storyteller and some toasted marshmallows and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a family evening out.

Sharon Wall teaches local clarinet student Graham Maclean
The answer is blowing in the wind The distinctive tones of the clarinet have inspired musicians through the ages. Imagine the sound of Prokofiev’s cat walking through your home with Peter looking out for the wolf. This need not be a fantasy - if you want it badly enough - with good lessons and plenty of practice that cat will walk through your home! If you, or your son or daughter, want to learn the clarinet then you are lucky to have close at hand one of the most highly qualified clarinet teachers in the county. Sharon Wall offers one to one as well as group teaching, coaching and also performs at a professional level. She has been coaching the Birmingham Schools’ Symphony Orchestra for 30 years and managing it for the last five. Her wealth of experience includes playing in the English Symphony Orchestra for 22 years, freelancing with the CBSO, Birmingham Royal Ballet and other chamber and orchestra groups as well as teaching at Warwick University and King Edward VI Foundation schools.
Sharon teaches her students, who range in age from 7 to 77, in her lovely music room in her home in Moseley. She teaches from first notes right through to diploma and professional playing standards and has seen endless pupils go on to music college and university. Sharon said: “I came to Birmingham as a student and was fortunate to be taught by Martyn Davies of the CBSO. I made Moseley my home as a professional clarinettist and music my life. “Nothing gives me more pleasure than to see and hear the progress my students make and to inspire them and spur them on.” If you would like to enquire about clarinet lessons please call Sharon on 0121 449 4423 or email sharonmcwall@blueyonder.co.uk

Lessons with Lauren If you watched The Great British Sewing Bee with envy, wishing you could wield a needle or pin a dart, then fret no more. One of the show’s finalists, Lauren Guthrie, has set out her sewing know-how out in a stepby-step book which aims to turn any humble beginner into a dressmaker extraordinaire. ‘Learn to Sew with Lauren,’ was launched in September at her Moseley haberdashery Guthrie & Ghani, which she runs with her husband Ayaz. The business opened its doors in April 2013 and, as well as a wide range of buttons, fabrics and patterns, also plays host to a whole variety of workshops, including sewing (for beginners and improvers), knitting, crochet and home interiors. You can
even learn how to make a beautiful fabric Christmas advent calendar in time for the festive season.
Details of the book, the haberdashery and the classes can all be found on the website: www.guthrie-ghani. co.uk, along with news, projects, tutorials and Lauren’s online blog.
