Evolution of the Kings Heath pub The Hare and Hounds is a thriving music venue and community hub for Kings Heath, recently having won best live entertainment venue in the entire country at the Great British Pub Awards! Under the trusty guise of our Swan (Publishing) we approched the Hare and Hounds, cautiously, in the hopes of finding out a few tricks of the trade - with their ever growing reputation for excellence - and more on their pioneering plans for the future.
What has changed in recent years? This year marks the 10th anniversary of Adam, the current owner, taking over the pub and over those years he’s developed what was essentially an old man’s drinking pub into one of the most well respected live independent music venues in the country. We’re constantly looking at ways to improve the whole experience for the customer, whether that be in the form of the sound and production for the gig goers in our upstairs venues, or the drinks range and service in the two downstairs bars. With total free reign to name drop, what big acts have come through the venue in recent years?

Although playing host to local Bham legends UB4O’s first ever gig in 1979, it is only in the past 7 years that we’ve really established ourselves as one of the most influential music venues in the country. Artists to have graced the stages in recent years include... Basement Jaxx, Ed Sheeran, Scroobious Pip, Ellie Goulding, Craig Charles, GZA (Wu Tang Clan) and many more. With this rate of growth you must have big plans for the future? Tommorow’s leaders in environmental protection The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country is delighted that five MPs from this region have signed a new ‘pledge for the environment’.
This pledge is being promoted by Greener UK - a new coalition of 13 major environmental organisations including The Wildlife Trusts - which was launched Thursday December 8. Greener UK have united to ensure that the UK uses the pivotal moment presented by the forthcoming Brexit negotiations to restore and enhance the UK’s environment. Local MPs who have already signed Greener UK’s pledge for the environment include: Richard Burden MP, Birmingham, Northfield; Roger Godsiff MP, Birmingham, Hall Green; Andrew Mitchell MP, Sutton Coldfield; Mike Wood MP, Dudley South; and Valerie Vaz MP, Walsall South. Nationally, 145 MPs from across the political parties have signed up to the Greener UK coalition’s pledge for the environment.

In the pledge, the MPs commit to do everything in their power to: · establish the UK as a world leader on the environment by matching or exceeding current environmental, wildlife and habitat protections; · ensure that the UK leads on climate action; and · create a countryside richer in nature by supporting farmers and landowners to deliver environmental benefits alongside a thriving farming sector. Georgia Stokes, Chief Executive of The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country, said: “Following the vote to leave the EU, the UK should seize the moment to set the highest environmental standards in the world and ramp up efforts to promote nature’s recovery. This wonderful part of Birmingham is home to people from all walks of life who experience it in many different ways. This issue we hear from Iona Mandal, age 10, a pupil at King David School in Moseley who tells us about her own version of Moseley and Kings Heath.
Moseley and Kings Heath – where difference makes us the same. The twin neighbourhoods of Moseley and Kings Heath are a melting pot of diversity brewing with varied people, language, religion, culture, food, emotions, opinion and lifestyle. Everyone’s uniqueness and difference makes the area beautifully harmonious. I practice Hinduism; attend the Midland’s only Jewish school - King David School, where most children are Muslims. We read and write Ivrit, recite Jewish prayers, do Israeli songs, dance and eat kosher food. Isn’t this proof of my neighbourhood’s diverse community fabric? Moseley Village - a mix of modernity and heritage was crowned best for city living in 2015. The village green has independent shops, pubs and restaurants serving a myriad of cuisines. My favourite is Damascena. The Farmer’s Market is held on Saturdays. The Moseley Society
maintains the Icehouse and Dovecoat with an 18th Century style garden. The magical world of Moseley Bog entices me. At Shades Music, I play the clarinet, while in Creation Climbing Centre I do climbing. Mummy does meditation in Park Road’s Birmingham Buddhist Centre.
Kings Heath High Street’s array of shops sells almost anything. I love Mariano’s Café for its apple pie. Hickory Dickory Playhouse is best to burn off calories! For a bookworm, Kings Heath Library is handy. Highbury Park attracts outdoor lovers for dog walking, picnics and exercise. The Highbury Orchard Community engages locals in celebrating nature. We attend the Christmas Fayre and Carols at Highbury Hall, former home of Joseph Chamberlain. One of UK’s top performing secondary schools, the Camp Hill Girls (and Boys) is here. The neighbourhood has accepted me wholeheartedly since moving in.

2017 will be an interesting year! Lots of potential bumps in the road ahead which leads to uncertainty for the housing market. But we think it’s important to not get carried away. Fresh herbs add another dimension to food that dried herbs can never come close to, so why not grow your own? You may find that nurturing plants for the benefit of spectacular meals is so rewarding that it becomes a lifelong romance with your garden. A Busy Year for Moseley in Bloom After the successes of 2016 Moseley in Bloom is looking forward to another exciting year. Even as the Christmas lights fade from memory the floral displays for next summer have been ordered, so Moseley will again look its best during the growing season.

Chinese Gardens & a Bloomin’ Quiz 16 February, 7.30 p.m., Moseley Exchange. ‘Chinese Gardens and the Landscape that Inspired Them’. This beautifully illustrated talk details the speakers’ (Bill and Marilyn Hammerton’s) trips to see Chinese gardens, then gives a brief history of the gardens before describing them in more detail and finally looking at the landscape that inspired them. The lecture is free, and will be followed by tea and some of MiB’s delicious cakes. 10 March, 7.00 for 7.30, Moseley All Services Club. Quiz-lovers will have a chance to test their knowledge in the MiB Quiz. Teams of up to 6 people are invited to pre-register at info@moseleyinbloom.org.uk, and there is a charge of £30 per team.

About the author Although the blitz on Birmingham was a significant part of my early life, I have many happy memories of teenage years in Harborne and of training in the city as a nurse and midwife in the infant NHS. In 1961 I married Colin, a Birmingham University graduate. After a wonderful year in the States, we returned to settle in Bristol. Our son and two daughters have provided nine grandchildren and this has meant fun-filled family celebrations over the years.

I wrote my first book when I was ten. Hours of laborious handwriting secretly hidden under floor boards. It was going to be a block-buster. Also secretly, my parents held a book-reading. I wasn’t invited but listening at a door, I overheard the laughter and ‘whatever next’. Those attempts were shelved or ‘under-boarded’. A lifetime later I have a different story to tell ... of life before TV, dishwashers, freezers, mobile phones, computers, fast food, fast flights and fast motorways. The good old days? No just the old days, but definitely worth remembering. Blitzed City ‘Read all about it...read all about it...War declared’—‘Evacuate children immediately.’ Newsboys shouted, loudspeakers blared, children disappeared from the streets. It was September 3, 1939. One year later, thousands of German bombs dropped on Birmingham during the terrifying days of the Blitz. The city in flames, the sky glowing red, is deeply etched into memory. The raids of November 1940 were described as; ‘Hell on earth’, by the Swindon Mercury in 1996 ... ‘In utter devastation, buildings at the centre of Birmingham were smoking shells of their former status.’

A taste of Italy Coming soon to Moseley village, high-end deli “Sapori di Sole” will bring the flavours and produce of sunny Italy to Birmingham.
Translated literally it means “The flavours of sunshine”, an allusion to the Gargano region in Southern Italy, where owner Antonello Turco comes from. The Gargano area in northern Puglia is often referred to as Puglia’s sunny mountain, where the sunny climate creates lush vegetation and hence beautiful food. The deli, at 25 St Mary’s Row, will stock the best of Italy’s cheeses, hams chutneys, olives, and olive oil, as well as delicious 44
homemade Italian food to take home. There will be Puglian Paposcia, pastries, and foodie gifts to cater for all tastes, as well as Italian ice-cream in the summer months. The Deli will have strong links to Byzantium Restaurant in nearby Kings Heath, where owner Antonello is currently Head Chef. Sapori di Sole invites you to visit, savour and enjoy the sunny taste of Italy, right here in Moseley.
